These guys are so classy. Also, Thomas Lang is so cool that I would like him even if he had never touched a drum kit. If either of these fellas comes near my area for a clinic, I'm am there!
Mike Johnston is awesome! Please make sure you listen to the great message about positivity he gives around 28:45 after he finishes playing. Mike is the epitome of class.
sometimes I would leave negative comments ,when I'm very dispointed with a video but I've never really paid attention that it would cause somone to quit,or feel so bad about himself though this was never my intention but since now I will watch myself,Thank you Mike for this lesson, it would be so nice if each influencial drummer would spread such message
It's weird. A few months ago I was limiting myself to a single pedal kick, snare, hi-hat, high tom, floor tom and ride. I was SO freaking creative. And now that I watch this video, it reminded me of that. Well, my creativity didn't wear off. I'm using 7 pc kit right now and I pull off some really cool stuff.
Awesome, Thanks for uploading this! Mikes so on to it. There's not many clinic where you can take something educational and helpful away, most clinic consist of a drummer playing a solo, playing to a track, describing their gear and answering the same questions. Love Mikes message at the end too!!
I actually like the camera work, the close ups of people were hilarious, especially the kid with the mustache.the panning DID make me kinda woozyheaded. but it was very dynamic and kept my attention. great job
Setting limits on your solos is such an awesome idea. I saw a video of an older clinic of Jojo Mayer where he mentioned trying to solo using only 8th notes. Since 8th notes is something that literally everyone can play, doing it in a way that doesn't sound amateurish is quite difficult and forces you to be creative. That's something I've played with from time to time and now I have a few more ideas to try out. I love that constant quarter note cross-stick idea at the end too. Wicked awesome!
wow, i've never heard of mike johnston but he knows his shit! his half of the clinic was really cool haha. and, as usual, thomas lang is just fucking awesome
Thomas Lang is a machine, and I dont think the roland kits do him any favours, starts to sound way too mechanical with those sampled sounds, yet he rocks on an acoustic kit.
Just relax and stop trying so hard and maybe it will reflect in your playing. I had the same problem when I first started out, but now that I feel more comfortable behind the kit it reflects in my playing and posture!
So fun to watch Mike's inspiring clinic about how you not just can "baga-di-back-gu-ga-hip-tu-hap-hip" things 'cause at some point it will no longer be inpressive, that you're not worse than any other drummer, or better, just in different time on the timeline and saying we should comment something positive on a TH-cam video just to make a drummer stay in this drumcommunity called "family". Then Thomas comes in and do the fastest drumsolo he can ever come up with, he's obviously doing this clinic just to because Roland told him to, taking up a 9-10 year old kid from the audience who's been playing for 9 months. Saying after they're done jamming: "At your age, I was sooo much better than you". Draging his selfconfidence to 0. You see very quickly how good person Mike is and he has given alot of influence in many drummers, including me.
***** I'mTheDrummer Yes, he said that. And it wasn't a joke.. He said that as a joke. But it is true. He was much better.. But then still, Mike said before in his clinic "you're not worse than any other drummer, or better, just in different time on the timeline" so that means that this kid is behind on the timeline. Thomas Lang has played since he was 3. This 9-10 year-old kid had played 9 months..
Two hours later Dario won a brand new Mapex drum set. He had a 1 in 450 chance. Then got to play on stage with the Alice Cooper band along with other celebrity drummers. A drummers dream for sure!
You know all bullshit aside, having been to NAMM a few times and met some musicians that were real fuckin assholes, watching Lang playing with that kid completely made my heart smile. That kid is probably gonna be a bad ass drummer
Thanks for making and posting this video. I little less movement and zooming in and out would definitely make it more enjoyable next time. Thanks for getting Lang's foot work!
By moving around so frequently we are constantly reminded the camera-work itself is the focus rather than the artists who are being filmed. The argument of constantly moving to not block vision of others for too long doesn't wash as you spend plenty of time behind or to the sides of the performer which blocks no-one's vision. Find a good position and angle and stay there for 10 mins. And less zooming in and out on everything every few seconds.
i'm from sydney and sorry but the best clinic i have ever seen was just last week with dennis chamber's Cindy blackman and also the other two percussionists from santana and it lasted for 4 hours
A side point, really enjoyed the clinic due to the camera angles flowing with topic and what is being demonstrated. Smooth transitions. A person would have to be an athlete moving a camera around for one hour and a half. Great job!
I‘ve seen this so many times but it’s still unbelievable what Thomas Lang does. Such a show off like „look at me humans, I am not one of you and I can do it all“ Maybe you have to be an octopus to have a chance to ever do this 😂
He wasn't joking, that much is clear, but he immediately felt bad after his little (totally human) reaction, and went on saying something really positive. I thought he was pretty cool as always
We could have had the same discussion 60 or 70 years ago about the electric guitar. Today the electric guitar is the real deal in its own right. I totally agree with you that nothing can actually replace the real thing but you can take it to a completely new level. Thomas Lang is not a good example for this though. He doesn't use this technology to it's full potential. He even mentions Johnny Rabb at some point.
In fairness to Thomas Laing he did tell Dario he was awesome. I don't think he intended to put him down by saying he was better than him at his age. Probably reading a bit too much into that. A great clinic and i wish i could have been there. BTW The moustached kid is just pure gold :)
the only thing i don't agree on is when people say one of the best drummers in the world well western music is and western drumming is only a quarter of the music out there ther's so much more out there that theres htings out there that even the top western drummers will have trouble with
this video is only up here at all thanks to the fella who filmed it and uploaded it. all you people bitching about the camera work need to remember that. jeez : /
It's outputted through speakers and recorded through a camera's microphone. The sounds are bound to sound a ton worse than if you were there in person. You have to look up videos in which the e-drums were properly recorded to get a better idea of the sound. Granted, they're still not the most realistic sounds.
AWESOME playing from both guys. Dom Famularo introduced Thomas. Dom is one truly incredible player too. Too bad he didn't play also. Still have to say I'm an acoustic fan…….the Roland triggery sound just doesn't get it for me… Fun listening tho anyway
I absolutely love the feel and response from electronic drums but to me size does matter. It's a personal preference but I love to sit behind a beefy acoustic set totally surrounded by excess toms and cymbals and naturally double kicks.
MIke Johsnton is hands down one of the best online drum teachers.. What a great message he had for all drummers at the end!!
mike Johnson is the man on the drums! he got feel! something many drummers seem to have lost and forgotten in the quest for chops.
I will listen to Mike or Thomas talk about music all day. Incredibly intelligent guys.
Seeing such fantastic drummers doesn't crush me, It gives me inspiration to get so much better!
Excellent!! I could watch him all day. Thank you for sharing this film. All the best.
These guys are so classy. Also, Thomas Lang is so cool that I would like him even if he had never touched a drum kit. If either of these fellas comes near my area for a clinic, I'm am there!
quarter note side stick solo is the best thing ive ever heard.
Mike Johnston is absolutely outstanding! Thomas Lang is amazing too...
Mike Johnston is awesome!
Please make sure you listen to the great message about positivity he gives around 28:45 after he finishes playing.
Mike is the epitome of class.
Holy crap i almost cried after that speech!!
That kid was dope 8)
And he got to play thunder butter before I ever got a chance in person! I love that cymbal.
So lucky and so cool.
Good job kid 👍🏻

I have to say that those exercises Mike showed about solos really improved mine massively
The drumming advice is the real value as per long term goals. The drumming it self very inspiring.
I've been following mike ti'll 2009, he really got better!

Thank you for this video! Quote from mike; "that's Hubba-dubba", 20min later...Thomas Lang with ome Hubba-dubba...;-)
Awesome, Thanks for uploading this! Mikes so on to it. There's not many clinic where you can take something educational and helpful away, most clinic consist of a drummer playing a solo, playing to a track, describing their gear and answering the same questions. Love Mikes message at the end too!!
i met Don Famularo at the Sabian factory in New Brunswick Canada in the mid 80s .what a humble and nice man .,
I actually like the camera work, the close ups of people were hilarious, especially the kid with the mustache.the panning DID make me kinda woozyheaded. but it was very dynamic and kept my attention. great job

Mike Johnston is a great drummer, and a class act!
Mikes preaching in this for real.
So inspiring, thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Very entertaining!
Keep on drumming young boy with the great hair!
This was a great video. Nice clinic and some memorable events, like the boy who jammed with Lang. Great stuff, thanks.
What Mike said at the end of his clinic is so true people need to chill negative people suck .Thats wha
So true. When these guys empower people, magic will happens.
Super-Duper Brave Kid!!!

Thank you. My sister recently visited your city. She loved the cool kind people!
Mike's stick drop at the beginning is hilarious. We're all human!
omg this thomas lang is a machine. real terminator! Our drummer was his student !
So true! Dom's positive spirit radiates thru a room.
Thanks a lot for the upload! Really nice work. Happy new year from Luxembourg!
You guys are awesome. Keep up the positivity and the great drumming.
Thomas is crazy ! Thanks for this post

I love that kid wearing the mustache
I would loved to have watched this all the way through but after 3 minutes I had motion sickness!!!
Love Thomas Lang so special
So kind and he listens with total respect to any one who approaches.
Same goes for Mike Johnston.
He wasn't joking, that much is clear, but he immediately felt bad after his little (totally human) reaction, and went on saying something really positive. I thought he was pretty cool as always
Dario rocked it well! Excellent clinic!
Thomas Lang is such a nice guy!
Dude this is amazing thanks for getting it on video ^_^
two of my fav drummers!!!! they rock!!! ^_^
I actually like the moving around of the camera.

This must have been in Seattle, I see a 12th man banner!
Awesome Clinic!

A great clinic and i wish i could have been there. BTW The moustached kid is just pure gold :)
Incredible..
My Idol Always !! Thomas Lang
Gotta love the kid with the mustache lol
Mike seems like such a cool guy
Thank you for uploading this man! It really inspired me :) cheers
That bit that Thomas did at 38:30? The hands getting slower as the feet get faster and then back again? That was the John Hiseman gene ;-)
i took a lesson with dom before he knew mike. Im happy they met
absolutely great
Thomas on cam? Awesome job Mike.
Rofl at the two guys at 8:17 both filming in portrait. How do people still not know that every video you watch is horizontal?!
So freaking amazing!
Awesome clinic!

Hey thanks for the upload.
Lang is just killing everybody in that room.
28:47 Mike's speech here is gold.
love you mike
Mike is awesome
Why won't Dom Famularo play, just a little, plizz
By moving around I don't block the vision very long of anyone watching.
this video is only up here at all thanks to the fella who filmed it and uploaded it. all you people bitching about the camera work need to remember that. jeez : /
And we cannot forget the wonderful Dom Famularo!
Kid with the stache cracked me up! >_

Epic kid mustache at 12:20
Lol !!!!!!

My niece is one of them.

cool watch thanks for recording
53:34 careful there Thomas. That must've hurt bad.
Very good my friend. Hugs!
I love Thomas on real acoustic drums though. When he plays real drums he is truly a great artist!
Excellent video *****
