Lions, hyenas and other wildlife calling in the Masai Mara

  • It's 5am in Mara North Conservancy, just outside Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. This is one of the few places in the world and even in East Africa where you can hear lions, hyenas, zebras, buffalo and other wild animals calling mixed with cattle bells, dogs barking and other sounds from the surrounding villages.
    Sit back, relax and listen as night turns to day and the bees wake up. Shortly afterwards the birds start singing and the wind picks up softly. Imagine you're on a dawn safari, fully immersed in your immediate reality, exposed to the elements and wildlife.
    Recorded with Zoom F6 and Sennheiser MKH8020 microphones left out in a tree for 24 hours. Enjoying the videos I upload on here? Feel free to support me by:

    Thank you George! Your work helps me sleep and work. I listen to these nature sounds (bird sounds, animal sounds, rain, thunderstorm...etc) almost 24 hours a day. I am from Hong Kong and I am sick of the noises from the city and my neighbours. I just become a patron - the first time I become a patron. I would like to say thank you for your work!

      Wonderful! I'm sorry to hear about the noise though. I've lived in Edinburgh in similar conditions and the only thing that helped was listening to recordings on noise canceling headphones.
      Thank you for becoming a patron though, it is much appreciated. All the best.

    have been reading Bernie Krause's Book on the Great Animal Orchestra, and how the animal music is made in response to their surroundings. I was at my local bird sanctuary this weekend and I was trying to listen to the birds and insects over the drone of traffic in the distance and other disturbances. The whole thing was so fragmented, as if each creature was trying to find a voice in the generalised din caused by humans. People do so much damage without a thought of the consequences. Listening to this was really enlightening

      There are some studies showing that noise pollution makes male birds shift their song higher in the frequency spectrum, causing less successful mating and overall population declines. All of a sudden it's not just about the soundscape anymore.

    Fantastiskt fina inspelningar du gör av naturen och alla dess ljud. Själv bor jag i södra delen av Sverige. Svårt att hitta störningsfria platser att spela in bra ljud på här.

    superb work , I was in the Masai Mara a few months ago and I stayed in one of those tent hotel places inside the park. I remember hearing the hyenas and lions , it was amazing man. I wish I had recorded , good thing I found your channel. Now I do my homework to this reminiscing.

    Hello George, really love this one, so real!!! The mix of animals in one recording is amazing. Can i ask why you chose to use the Zoom F6?

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I used the F6 because of its power efficiency. The Mixpre would only get 14 hours on a 26800 mAh powerbank, while the F6 can easily get double that or more.

      Yeah, they're quite shy indeed. I have a few mediocre photos but nothing very good either. Their calls are very nice and quite easy to record since they're so loud.

      There's a small Masai village not too far away. At dawn the temperature inversions cause sounds to bounce back from the atmosphere making them audible much further away. I think it's still a great recording and it reflects the true soundscape of the Masai Mara.
