My dad drove for Greyhound in the 70’s-90’s I rode on many of those buses. Detroit baby! Bill Anderson’s tour bus broke down and dad had to go pick him up and take him to his show while he got his bus fixed back in the late 70’s.
HAY WILY, GOOD REVIVAL, FER-SHER... NICE SUNDAY, GO TO MEETIN-TYPE BUS RIGHT THERE. ALREADY GOT THE HISTORY, JUST NEED THE FOLKS... STAY COOL, WILY, PEACE FROM CREEL CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO...
This is a very cool old bus! I smiled widely when it just cranked right up and it sounds pretty good too! I drove a 1955 GMC PD-4501 Scenicruiser for parts of 2 years for a bicycle tour group out of Michigan. We went as far west as Seattle, as far south as Key West, as far east at Novi Scotia and as far north as Michigan's U.P. Those came initially with 2 4-cyl Detroit engines in line but were rapidly converted to a single 8V71 Detroit. The setup in the rear was very similar with that gearbox sending a shaft left for the engine cooling fan and to the right for the air conditioning system, though there was no turbo. The Scenicruiser only had one drive axle and one tag but both axles had duals. The Scenicruiser had 10 seats and the restroom on the lower floor then went up three steps to 41 mode seats in the rear. (10 rows with the last row having 5 seats across) The transmission was four speeds with no synchro's so it required double clutching when downshifting. To reverse, put it in first, hold a switch to activate a solenoid and, pull back to second. It had only four gauges, Speed, Air, Temp and oil pressure. No fuel gauge, or tach or even an odometer, that was on the wheel. It was such a nice bus to drive. With the engine way in the back and air suspension, it felt almost like you were flying, though it topped out at 72 MPH.
@@DontbeWily the two engine original setup also included two gearboxes a 2 and a 3 speed giving 6 gears. I never saw one so I only expect that the 2 speed unit was a switch not a lever. I have read that the clutch was also just a switch meaning starts and shifts were harsh!! With the 8v-71 and the 4 speed with a real clutch a good driver could produce the smooth acceleration that bus passengers love!
Wiley, I can't say it enough It is truly a great pleasure watching your videos I'm sure you are a great inspiration to all of your viewers, you show great perseverance and a true faith in God Keep up the good work and as always I will be looking forward to seeing your next video Thank you sir and God bless you and your family always
Your videos are always good but as a fan of the Eagle busses, this one was a real treat. I agree they are some of the prettiest busses around. Have to say I was really shocked and disappointed at the condition of the interior. There seems to be evidence that it was indeed used by a gospel group but the trashed interior makes me think the last road trip was made by a rock n' roll band. Could be a nice project for someone, though the steel frames on these busses were notorious for hidden rust and that will need to be thoroughly checked. The rear suspension was rubber torsion axles that could be adjusted as they wore out, but only to some extent and then they need to be replaced which is costly. Like others here I was not surprised that the Detroit diesel fired right up.
Excellent video Wiley :) also cool bus also does need some quarts of engine oil for sure show on dipstick! Also my one aunt drove school bus years ago but not coach type one ! Also I had as my school bus for 4 years and summer school one year to also own her own bus over years were International brand in gas and desiel motor plus Automatic and floor Manual transmission types ! Her daughter was ones watching kids for safety rides or other stuff too!
Wow ! You are so lucky Wily ! That many years setting it’s a miracle the rack wasn’t stuck ! I think some of those old coaches were 24 volt with 12 volt converters. Sounds really good but probably got a lot of air leaks from lines and air bags. Have a Blessed Day 🇺🇸⚡️TCB⚡️
Thanks for another great video Wiley. It was interesting for sure. Feel sorry for you getting all that turbo oil film all over you and your clothes. Going to have to run you thru a car wash to get you cleaned up-just giving you a bad time Wiley. Sorry about the messy oil film you got into. Oh my. Hang in there. I heard the owner say he wanted to sell so I bet you can help him and bet someone out there would be interested. Get him going in the right direction Wiley. Super video Wiley. Thanks so much. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve. Feel bad for you getting that oil film all over you. How was the meal that Casey fixed for you??????? Let us know please. Thanks.
I can just stand next to grease and it will get on me. Trying to smother it out was the worse part. I got me a lung or two full of it Thanks Kasey can cook. He is a retired truck driver. He should have plenty of stories to tell while cooking
Its very simple to shut down this type of detroit , trip the emergency stop on the blower by hand - its simple to reset by hand . The governor has 2 levers , the throttle and the shut down lever - both can be operated by hand .
You did well Mr Wily getting the bus started that's something different and it was nice of him to cook for you too i hope you ate very well 🥣 I'm in one of your videos down the road you should try school bus to start
Cassette tape are long and before that the eight track, all things of the past, I still have many eight tracks and I think three players i listen too them from time to time.😅😅😅
Back in the early 60s the Golden Eagles had a snack bar in the back with a waitress. I use to ride them to Military school. Those good old days are long gone. SHAME.
From watching bus grease monkey the bus you have here is in real good shape don't let them break anymore glass and get ahold of him he's probably got a buyer looking
I drove these all over the country and I have always thought these were the most beautiful busses ever built
Me too.
It's still For Sale!!!

It's hard to kill a Detriot. I think those engines will still run during the zombie apocalypse. 😅 Good job Wily! Thanks for sharing!
Хорошии́. 😊👍
LOL. I agree. Right up there with roaches
All I want to hear after the apocalypse is a 220 cummins with a drop end manifold and straight pipe pulling a grade
