    Why didn't you show Thermostat connection?
    The unit I purchased has wires at top also, just like your unit?
    And by the way i had bacon with my eggs this morning for breakfast 😂

    Blows my mind that this is sitting on a combustible surface. The floor in front of mine gets stupid hot, melted my plastic tote at 18” away. IMO, there should be 6” non-combustible spacer from the bottom of the unit to the floor.
    I am going to look into this… doesn’t seem right. (My furnace was installed by a pro)

    • @geoffwilson9273
      @geoffwilson9273 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just read the installation guide, says clearly that the furnace may be installed directly on wood or concrete. Anything other than wood or concrete requires a wood or metal spacer.

    you should do a video on combustion analysis. I had an old old old propane natural gas or propane unit like this one. It had live wires arching in the attic up above the unit. I never knew till I rewired my old aluminum wiring and put in a split unit heat pump. You made me better understand what I had thank you and going forward this will help if i ever run across one like this.

    Thanks for this. I have a Williams wall furnace that has the heat exchanger metal making a loud banging noise when the metal expands. Is that fixable? It sounds crazy but one person recommended hitting the metal with a hammer to dent it to stop the noise. Is that worth trying before I replace the whole thing? It's only about ten years old.

    Steve, are you not allowed to use gas flexes in your area? Was wondering why you fabricated a gas connector rather than just using a store bought one? I put in quite a few of these during my career. Williams had trouble with heat exchangers cracking for a while, as they wanted to run a factory set and sealed gas pressure of 4” on natural. We used to turn them down to 3.5”. The fan driven wall furnaces were very noisy. Also, from what I recalled you cannot put a filter in them, so they just fill up with dirt and become a fire hazard if they are not kept clean. This draft safeguard safety switches gave lots of trouble when they came out. Williams had alot of defective ones. They were very sensitive to wind and down drafts at the flue cap. Lots of times when we had to extend the flue higher. They are very necessary though, to prevent products of combustion from spilling into the living space due to adverse conditions.

    • @StephenRardon
      @StephenRardon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A modification like that could be potentially life threatening and extremely dangerous if not fatal. As a home owner I would never do it and as a contractor I would be extremely concerned about the liability I would be taking on by modifying the equipment. IF I were considering it I wouldn’t proceed without reaching out to the manufacturer (who will probably tell you not to do it) to see if they had a kit or method of derating their appliance.

      @@StephenRardon you are right. It is because I have heard of horror stories about fires. Thank you for taking me out of it because I wasn't sure. some times that unsure feeling just could be God's way of a warning. I was thinking about going with a smaller unit anyway I will just get another one from home depot. Thanks again and Happy new year to you and your family.

    I'm replacing my wall heater with the same brand. I already ordered it. The one I'm replacing we had to have it repaired three times and is not reliable needless to say. My house is a 1962 house so I'm sure the heater is probably 1950s technology. Thank you so much for the video it's very helpful.

    I just had one installed. Seems like the fan never kicks on fully. Is this a setting they out in? Puts out a lot of heat but no noise from the fan like in the clip of it running

    • @StephenRardon
      @StephenRardon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s been a long time since I played with this unit so I don’t recall details exactly but what I do recall is that there is a stacked sequencer in the blower wiring circuit that gave the fan two speeds. I adjusted the setup to only ever run the highest fan speed. The temperature rise and combustion test on it was pretty extreme from what I recall. I’m not a huge fan of the design personally.

    • @StephenRardon
      @StephenRardon  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the VERY old stuff could have been made of an asbestos fiber material but anything more recent would have only possibly been wrapped with something that might have asbestos in it.

      they're ridiculously inefficient +Leandrew Rowsey i was surprised you could still buy them!

    • @Progrocker70
      @Progrocker70 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Empire and Cozy also still make them. They are only about 65-70% efficient. There are high efficiency direct vent models, Rinnai makes them but they are very expensive. I had a wall heater like this in an apt I grew up in and it didn't heat all that well, most of the heat was at the ceiling while the floor was cold. Now, another apt I lived in had a '60s era Siegler gas stove with the radiant glass front. It was enameled steel and that thing was a beast, heated the whole 1200 sq. ft. apt nicely with radiant heat! My last year there the owner decided to replace it with a forced air furnace and ductwork at the ceiling. I told him leave the heater it's great, the heat again was as bad as the wall furnace.

    Installed 2 similar style williams wall furnaces, and within the first day they both overheated and the limit by the stack went out. adjusted the gas pressure down from 4.3 to 3.20 (due to altitude here in delta colorado) and the one has operated fine for a week but the other still blows the limit. The stack is oval for 2 feet then 4 "round b vent in the attic out the roof. This is the first time I have ever installed a wall furnace. Next time I have to replace a wall furnace I am going to go ahead and try a different brand, because I didnt care for this style furnace either.

    Great and fun Video Stephen!
    I can't get over two things about Williams.....
    They know they are one of the only companies that still make wall furnaces. Most of them are installed in Mobile homes and places like you installed. You would think they had a per-order Propane version! And you would think by now they would have designed a filter system for these units! I just don't get it.
    I actually have a very old Williams built wall furnace in my garage. Of course I keep it clean. It was filthy when I bought the home. Don't know how it did not catch on fire because it was used every winter. It is built like a tank and I think it will last quite a few more years.
    Anyway....great video!
    I hate Propane by the way! I think it is a nasty fuel!
    Brent

    You are very good. Will you come to Johnstown, PA to help me with a house that is 106 years old, has natural gas supplying it, but recent owners have not thought seriously about heating the house. There are two ventless stoves (about 40,000 btu/hr total) distributed over three floors! I want to replace one with a vented gas heater, and add a natural gas water heater (currently electric). You seem to understand the physics of it. I'm looking at a unit like you installed, or a "consol" Williams vented system, but they are not as efficient as the what you did.
