- In this video, I’m showing you how my Dappled Willow shrubs look 3 years after coppicing them down to the ground. These shrubs were all propagated from one original shrub! Also new Blue Arrow Junipers to provide beautiful blue-green evergreen color, and a sneak peek of the new drought tolerant bed filled with pollinator-friendly perennials! Hi Laura. I’m happy your Dapples are doing well. I decided this year I wanted to try pollard pruning my DW. I could not be more pleased. I learned this technique from another TH-camr “grow for me gardening”. Their garden is just amazing. Now it looks like a miniature tree. Love the junipers. ❤
That's wonderful to hear about your Dappled Willows! Pollarding is definitely a different look for Dappled Willows, similar to growing them as small lollipop standard trees. And yes, these new junipers are going to be beautiful as they mature!

Thanks so much Jean! The False Yuccas were a new-to-me purchase when we first moved here. We saw the word "yucca" - which is one of my husband's favorite plants - and the pretty flowers. Like I said in the video: one of our best purchases ever because of how easy-care they are! (I should do a video about them.) The only pain is how well they "catch" all of the Fall leaves. 🤣 🍂 🍁 🍂
Great video, especially during our heat wave of the 90's every day. I'm having to deal more with bermuda grass creeping in my flower beds.

The Dappled Willow is really nice. I have a Bloomerang that practically took over the wall and became massive. I did pruned it hard but it came back stronger. I don't want to remove it completely because I love the blue purple flowers from Bloomerang. And it reblooms 3 times a year.
It sounds like a good problem to have, since it blooms 3 times a year, but I understand needing to cut it back. Hopefully with a yearly pruning it will behave for you and still provide those beautiful flowers! 😀

Thank you for the update on the dappled willows. We finally achieved the privacy we wanted with our dappled willow hedge. Thanks for all the advice you gave me when I thought the entire hedge was dying. I had to move another hedge of dappled willows to the front side of my house because (didn't know it at time of planting) I have black walnut trees in the back yard and this was killing them. Now I have replace them with tiger eye sumac in pots (invasive). Have to be willing to change plans as a gardener right? Thanks again.🙏

Can’t wait to see what you have in the new beds. A couple ideas; a variegated Japanese Silver grass in front of Magnolia Jane and All Gold Hakonecloa amongst the blue evergreens. It’s ok to tell me if you think my ideas are dumb.
Nice ideas - not dumb! The “All Gold” needs more shade than that area gets, but it’s a great suggestion to keep in mind for other areas for its vibrant color! 👍 I used to have several Japanese Silver Grasses in the front yard where the Red and Yellow Twig Dogwoods are now. The grasses were beautiful but eventually grew SO wide and large they became a bit unruly - so I’m a bit reticent to try them again. I do have a few variegated sedges that can take more sun…still in the same pots for years 😱🤣 that might work. They have some of that yellow gold color you’ve now put in my head. Hmmm… 🤔 Do you grow the All Gold?
@@GardenSanity I have the Silver Grass and yeah I have to divide it a lot. It was HUGE! Never needs watering though. I’ve been looking to try the All Gold, but they say it needs a good amount of sun or it’ll be just plain green. I’ve seen it in gardens getting full sun, but I don’t know how much is too much.
@willaerley7140 I used to leave the Silver Grass standing in the Winter, until I realized it was ending up in other yards from strong winds. 🫣🌾 Didn’t want to be a bad neighbor. 😬
I have trimmed up my dappled willow into a three trunk standard. Of course it threw out a large amount of suckers so cut them and sprayed with sucker punch. I would like to braid these stems but them are too stiff. Maybe in the winter I will try. I think I will just be able to twist them around each other.😊
I love multi-trunk Dappled Willow standards, Jo! I think they are so very pretty! 👍 Not sure if the twisting or braiding will work, like you said these stems can be quite stiff as they develop. The other thing to watch is that these stems don't end up rubbing against each other once twisted, because any movement between these stems will start rubbing off the protective outer layer, which could enable the stems to become diseased or even just weakened. Just a note of caution, that's all. 💚 🌿
@@GardenSanity Hadn’t thought of that. I may take off the third largest trunk, have to check to see what it would look like. It is planted in a well protected area at least.

I just bought a Dappled willow about a month ago, planted it in th ground and watered it well. It's getting brown leaves and also losing leaves down the stems. I have tried to keep it watered well in this heat we're having in Maryland.
Hi Nikki, I’ve had that happen before, and it is usually transplant shock that happens sometimes when there’s hot weather like you mentioned. Hang in there and keep giving it regular water. Don’t drown it, but make sure the soil doesn’t dry out. I just transplanted a small seedling (mentioned in the video) from the garden back into a pot. It was beautiful, but now has all brown leaves. However, I know that the plant will recover and start to push out new growth eventually… it just make take awhile in this heat. Another idea in the meantime: check where you bought the shrub to see what their refund policy is. If they still have Dappled Willow, it may be an option to just start fresh and get a new shrub as a replacement. When you plant it, add some Bio-tone by Espoma into the planting hole. It’s a great starter fertilizer that helps roots get established so the shrub will have better success. 👍 Keep me posted!
What is the radius of your DW after 3 years ish? I have a hedge planted but am thinking of planting evergreens in front of it and want to give them enough room on our rural lot. Thanks!
The best practice is to space Dappled Willow 6 feet apart from other shrubs, as the DW stems will begin arching out as it matures. Otherwise, if you plant closer, you'll be pruning stems almost regularly to keep them out of the evergreens in front of it. 👍
Thanks for the tips. My willow is huge, so I might cut it way back. what would be a good time to do that ? I am in PA :)
My pleasure Lorraine! The best time is in early Spring, as that’s when it wants to grow, so new growth will appear pretty quickly and you’ll still get to enjoy the pretty pink (and white and green) color in late Spring into early Summer. 🌿 You can also prune it in the Fall if you need to tidy it up. (I have videos on both of those pruning times if you scroll up above and click on the Dappled Willow playlist of videos which should help.) 👍 I have to trim mine up too, as I showed in this video. I’m going to wait until this heat wave is gone and temps will be better (lower). I’ll cut back stems here and there individually rather than an all-over pruning.
