I think Mario Bros 2 (US) is a true Mario Game. Purely based on the fact that the Shyguys have ported over to so many games after and originated from SMB2 making SMB2 (US version) cannon in the universe of Super Mario. (EDIT: Fixed Grammar)
I am the same age, born 1980. One day when I was 9, I didn’t do the dishes before my mom got home. She was so pissed she threw the NES against the wall and smashed it to pieces. She probably had a bad day at work. She felt guilty and bought me another one a few weeks later. I forgive her. I bet those guys really appreciated those gifts. A really nice thing to do for a stranger.

Still hurts to think that I threw away my issues of Nintendo Power 24 thru 62 in the trash because at the time I said to myself "I've grown up, why do I need these". Sure would have loved to have them again. Not just for the nostalgia but the feeling of joy when the mailman dropped off a new issue.

Technically it’s a reskinned game. Japan didn’t think that Americans would be able to play the actual Mario bros 2 which is what we eventually got as super Mario lost levels.
the gameplay and levels were not designed with super mario in mind, they just threw the mario characters in to sell it to us americans. this game is about as real as a kid dressing up as mario for halloween. he might look like him but it ain’t real.

That’s a really tough question. I think Mario 2 was hard for a lot of us to process when it first came out. Not my personal favorite but I can’t blame anybody who loves it. It lacked a bit of that Mario flavor at the time but now it’s become cannon I would say

Super Mario 2 is a true Mario game. A ton of lore that's used in all Mario games including peach and luigis mechanics come from that game. Shy guys, ba-bombs etc.
I could go on a long diatribe, but Nintendo definitely see SMB2 as a real Mario game. When they came to make a Famicom cartridge version, the Fuji TV version was essentially erased, and Japan came to know it as Super Mario USA. It was the first Mario game they brought to the GBA, as their most prominent launch title.
The love for Super Mario 2 makes me so happy to hear. I think the fact that we later found out it wasn't an actual super mario game tainted how good that game was. If you didn't have a ton of NES games or a subscription to Nintendo power on the NES the only popular games that can compete with it is Zelda, Super Mario, and Metriod. Super Mario 2 was both hard but self explanatory while being very creative and innovative. Actually beating Zelda required a knowledge of the game or patience to backtrack until you figured it out, Metroid had the same problem of being a giant maze of backtracking if you didn't know what you were doing. By the end of the console a game to pick up and play that wasn't Mike Tyson's punch-out style of mastering 1 mechanic, Super Mario 2 was the absolute best that any lawman could find. It gave you the feeling that discovering the first secret pipe or the first underwater level in Super Mario gave almost every level.
7:14 That Mega Man 3 Nintendo Power was the first issue I ever got. Issue 20. I must have read that thing cover to cover over 100 times. (It sure as hell wouldn't be a 9.2 CCG rated magazine!) If I saw that at a con, I'd be VERY tempted to get it!
I remember on Christmas Day when I was 6 we went over my Aunt & Uncle's place for Christmas (my mother was a single mother at the time). My other Aunts and their boyfriends, and my my Grandparents were there. I was the only Grandchild at the time. My uncle gifted me a RC Electric Car Track Set & a Nintendo Action Set. I played that Nintendo forever. Until my mother made a deal with me. She had brought home from work a VCR. Knowing that Mighty Ducks, Little Giants, Home Alone 2 and TMNT were coming out to the local Blockbuster (which I ended up working at) she said, "We can keep the Nintendo or the VCR." Immediately I said, ''VCR".... So we took my Nintendo to the local Funco Land. There she asked, "What are you going to get with your money?" I just pointed to the Hulk Hogan Wrestling game for NES. She said, "Sorry, we don't have that system to play it anymore." A week after having the VCR, she tells me.... "So I have to bring back the VCR to who I borrowed it from at work." WHOMP WHOMP That Christmas she felt bad and only got me one gift from "Santa". A Gameboy with Mario Baseball.
