Fat shaming is sickening and weak. If that's what another person has to rant about that is pathetic and cruel. I'm trim now, was thin my whole life, until I hit my mid-forties and my Mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I did everything to be healthy and practically starved myself to drop the weight, but menopause makes it incredibly difficult. And then my mother's diagnosis, my own health issues, and severe depression was a nightmare combination and I stopped trying to be healthy so I gained even more weight. I learned that when I was obese I became invisible to the people around me. I never knew how cruel people could be and the insane stereotypes that sprout from that ignorance. I did eventually do intermittent fasting and switched to keto and then carnivore diet. And then I suddenly had people telling me how great I looked and all of the positive comments that meant that they clearly thought I was a lost cause when I was heavy. It's telling. And then I had unwelcome advances from men again, because I was no longer invisible. It's really disturbing. I'm the same person, just in a smaller frame. The actress is lovely and sorry to hear all of this flack. People really are cruel.

It might have been your menopause as well but starving yourself can actually stop your body from losing weight. When a person suddenly stops eating their body goes into 'starvation mode', thinking it's due to a lack of food available the body automatically does whatever it can to store as much energy as possible and your mind will try and get you eating more after you have food.

What I hate is that the article writer said Penelope's body isn't described in the books...dude, it's very well described.
She is chubby at 15-17. Her book is set when she's 27, where she's gained more freedom, is firmly "on the shelf" and is a very busy businesswoman and author. Which has kead to her losing some baby fat, but she's still supposed to be fatter than her peers. And Colin loooves her curves.

Penelope looks perfectly at home amongst flowers and 1800s paintings, and that was the standard of beauty back then. Some women are always sooooo mad when fat women are being loved when they are still single, because it’s as if their world view/messages they received (that being fat is unworthy of love) is shattered. Like girl, there are people who love plus sized women. We are lovable and worthy of love. It’s like that one episode of Community when the doctor said (paraphrased from my memory, sorry I can’t find the exact quote), “We’re all made of ground beef! Nothing about our body is made to last forever.” And in response, the fitness obsessed Jeff says, (paraphrased), “Do you know how many donuts I gave up to look like this?! I want my donuts back.” Life is short. None of us live forever (even those of us who kill ourselves trying to achieve some ideal of body perfection that doesn’t even exist). I’m not encouraging obesity by saying just let yourself go, but you can in fact enjoy things in moderation and actually enjoy the gift of life if you stop obsessing over how your body looks. Stop being mad about it and enjoy a damn donut. 🍩

Couples like Colin and Pen exist in real world, and they're also being bullied for the fact one of them is "not hot" and therefore undeserving to be loved by their "hot" counterpart. It's so funny because the entire point of Penelope and Colin is not that they met and were instantly attracted to each other like Anthony and Kate, they met when they were children and have grown up together. Penelope fell in love with Colin from afar but never said anything and Colin only realised what he had once he matured enough to realise what he wanted in a partner. It's nothing to do with "hotness" and everything to do with mutual attraction. My only conclusion is that the hole in the air who wrote this drivel has never watched Bridgerton.

I want MORE representation from "normal" looking women and men in movies and TV, not less. Sure, i love seeing beautiful people on the screen and i absolutely love seeing all the actresses that work their ass off to look as good (and often thin) as possible (they deserve the praise for their work, god knows i couldn't do it... Size 2 my ass!) but representing average size and plus size women (and men, too, but there is a long list of "normal" looking men being paired with gorgeos women *coughcough* Adam Sandler...) is so important and we definitely need MORE of it and to stop pretending like love is only for beautiful people. The last years in TV did really good in that regard, i think.

I could be wrong, any history buffs out there willing to confirm or deny?
In any case, as a curvier woman myself I can say with assuredness that men will absolutely date women who aren't skinny, even the muscular/thinner sort of men whether the media wants to showcase that or not. She's not even remotely plus sized - the first couple seasons dress her more unflatteringly to make her appear 'dowdy' so this season she could 'glow up' and look awesome, as she chooses more flattering dresses vs the crummy and ones her mom forces her to wear. Though I think its hilarious that she's quoting the character she's trying to INSULT with the 'Dear Reader' thing.

Nicola is a UK size 10, a US size 6, btw which isn’t considered plus size at all, she’s not fat. I know people want to hold her up as a role model of plus size but she’s actually not and has talked about how it makes her uncomfortable and shared her size because she was tired of being called the big one. It’s horrifying that the media has told us someone that looks like her is fat, let alone ugly, when she is neither. I know a lot of plus sized women look to her and celebrate that someone that looks like her is getting a lot of love but using the words plus sized or fat to describe her, even in positive tones, is incorrect and does a disservice to changing the perception of and language around what’s considered a normal body. Fat phobia needs to end but using someone with very normal sizing as a role model to further the cause actually does more harm than good. It’s incredibly good to celebrate body diversity in media, which she can be a great example of, but not at the expense of continuing to perpetuate that an actor is by any means plus size outside that realm where most women are expected to be model thin only.
My historical plus size costuming group had a really good discussion about this with the newest season having started to come out and people still perceiving her as plus sized despite her being open about her sizing and talking about her discomfort at the words used about her body. I feel lots of these comments are positive in intention but still miss the mark due to how media is portraying her still and influencing our thoughts and people still talking about her body, or really anyone’s body.

She is not fat, just because she is not a size 0-4 doesn’t mean she is fat! She is very pretty and she has a voluptuous figure! She is so cute, a lot of people thinks she is attractive! I am one of them! I like Luke Newton, but he is not a ten! He is okay, but a perfect ten, no!

I Love Nicola to the moon and back! Her acting work in Derry Girls, Big Mood, and Bridgerton is fantastic and so great to see her on screen! I'm utterly disgusted by the fact someone thinks it's ok to write something so horrid about someone. Nicola's weight does not and should not affect her acting! The critics can hate all they want, but she's a beautiful, kind, respectful, and hard-working woman. She doesn't deserve any hate for this, and I can't wait to see her in Bridgerton S3 pt 2 in the next couple of weeks!
Don't let your body affect your life or work, girls. You are beautiful inside and out

I am very sad, very really sad that society still calls ugly what is not really ugly. The article is really written very abominably. I love her role in the Bridgertons, and she played in the third season just amazing. Thanks to this actress, my self-esteem rises, and this allows me to develop a healthy love for myself and my body. Nikola helps me feel better and work on myself in the right way. She is an amazing actress and a real beauty. Unfortunately, the sick standards will not soon disappear from society, and such articles are likely to still appear from different authors.

I actually was looking forward to Nicola’s Penelope because I’ve struggled with seeing myself as sexy as a plus-size woman. When I was younger I didn’t have sex because I honestly believed that fat people didn’t have sex. Seeing representation has helped this inner girl child heal.

Some people, women and men alike, hate to see pretty chubby girls be happy, celebrated or the center of attention. I’ve always been thicker than my girlfriends but never had a shortage of suitors. Men will hit on me and if I don’t return the attention, some of them immediately resort to attacking my body and calling me fat- like they weren’t just trying to get close to me. We’re sold an image of what is supposed to be the ultimate hot body and when a women falls outside of that narrow framework and yet is unarguably beautiful, society has to shame them cause it disturbs the narrative. It’s sad

I googled Zoe Strimpel, she is no one to be criticizing Nicola on how she looks. To really fight back, you give those type of people who body shame women the same energy they dish out.
Example: Strimpel, is no one to be criticizing Nicola, I saw her picture, her hair looks like it could be used for a brillo pad. To be brutally honest Nicola is way more beautiful than Zoe. Zoe doesn't exactly look like Ms. Universe herself.
People like Zoe have no problem insulting women on the internet, but when people insult them (especially on their looks). They will have a conniption fit.

I think Zoe is a beautiful woman, but of course there is no comparison to Nicola Coughlan who is just smoking hot.
I actually feel kinda sorry for Zoe as she obviously internalised chubby/fat = ugly. So I guess she finds herself ugly, too :/ I wish we could just all lift each other up and appreciate different kinds of beauty.

    • @jessicatsao92
      @jessicatsao92 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

He is mid, at most a 6. He is extremely lucky to have Nicola.
A ten would be Rege Jean Page, but looks back in the time synonymous to Bridgerton were less important, especially for men. Even the women were measured more for their behavior. A pretty but unkind and unacceptable woman was equally reviled, by both men and women, and as such, her reputation is ruined. Even the Gibson girls of the early 1900s were expected to dress modestly and behave and be of good character. The average man back in the day, especially successful men, did not marry the scarlet women but the more homely and proper women on their level in terms of character and industriousness and respectability. And even the scarlet women who were supposedly desired still had to have good character to some degree in public, if only to appease the masses back then. Also, beauty standards are different back then. Did she even LOOK at the paintings from the 1800s? Women who were "plump" were desirable too. Supermodel standards of today are actually considered masculine back in the day, almost boyish.
Said Zionist is operating from today's Instagram world standards. Also, the ideal models today are expected to look like porn stars. Back then, if you looked that way, you were an ideal mistress scarlet woman who slept around for favors. What's considered beautiful today was only good for courtesans back then.
It's really sad, because if any of those Instagram models who had any sense had a choice, I bet all of them would much rather earn their bread and butter being talented at stuff contributing to society's progress. Not a single person modeling on Instagram or porn wants to remain that ways forever. Sexually attractive looks can only go so far, and frankly I don't want to be a woman who looks that ways and sells herself to multiple men (or anyone).

This is why CBT didn't help me with social anxiety as much as people told me it would. I can tell my brain that people don't look at me and don't care and aren't paying attention. But all the times people have gone out of their way to let me know how horrible it is that I'm fat just won't let my brain believe that. And every time I see someone talking shit about fat people like this just reminds me how much people go out of their way to think about fat people. Like the sort of people that take pictures of fat women in gym changing rooms and then post it on the internet. Actual thing that actual people (several) have done.

There is something so bizarre about when people can’t accept that people are attracted not only by someone’s soul, but they are attracted to what they are attracted to. And as long as both are of legal age and there isn’t a power dynamic where one partner is dominating the other, let people love who they love.

  • @_Asvaria

Everyone who has at least half of a brain knows beauty is subjective - we see beauty by our own preferences, by what we find attractive. I talked with three of my friends (two guys and one girl) about this season - buddy Oliver sees Penelope as basic looking with nice hairstyles, Charlie said she’s extremly attractive but red lipstick is just not for her, for me she became quite beautiful and looks great in green and blue but our girl Ruth on the other side finds her ugly (even if she loves her recent fashion taste) - and that’s fine, we all have our preferences. Considering this, I’ll NEVER understand why anyone feels the need to write that kind of article. The way she talks about Penelope, like there’s NO WAY anyone could ever find her attractive, is just disgusting. And the part where she writes about how it’s unbelievable and even impossible for Colin to fall in love in her. I don’t know, maybe he simply finds her attractive? Maybe her „atributes” fits his damn PREFERENCES? How insecure you have to be about yourself to write that kind of article. It also gives a lot of personal vibes 😂
