  • Why did Tinubu change Nigeria's National Anthem? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Nigeria has a new national anthem. Yesterday, Bola Tinubu celebrated one year as president by changing Nigeria's national anthem to its original one, which was first adopted in 1960. The original anthem was controversial because it was created by a British expatriate, but it stayed as the anthem until 1978. In 1978, Nigeria was under a military dictatorship and the country adopted a new anthem. Why did Tinubu choose to change the national anthem that has been in place for 46 years? And why did he choose to change it on the one-year anniversary of him taking office? Could the new anthem be a way to distract the people of Nigeria?

There is NOTHING wrong with using an anthem just because a British woman composed it in 1960 at Independence. The British govt did not write the anthem. The contest was thrown open and people from all over the world, including Nigeria, Africa, the Caribbean, USA, UK etc sent in their proposed anthems, and a panel of judges which included Nigerians, selected 'Nigeria We Hail Thee', which was sent in by an English woman. THAT became the anthem. It was in use in Nigeria for nearly 20 years after Independence, so calling it a ''colonial anthem'' is stupid and misleading. The Nigerian government obviously thought it was more inspiring and unifying than the one in use, in a country increasingly fractured along ethnic lines. THAT was the reasoning behind the change, and it is no big deal at all. This news channel is VERY unprofessional, very negative and bigoted in the way they report on African issues. This so-called newscaster is so irresponsible, she has no business being there, or calling herself a journalist. You never see her report on all the poverty and destitution in India, with the millions and millions of slum dwellers living in penury, squalor, and power outages, and the thousands of Indians fleeing the country daily for greener pastures in Europe and America, in one of the most unequal nations on Earth, with a HUGE gulf between the rich and poor. Report on the huge problems of INDIA, the world's poverty capital, Palki Sharma, before looking for African countries to besmirch.

You still use the railway lines built by the British, the universities they built, the hospital they built...and by the way, did you compose any anthem? The usual petty nonsense...

    • @african-history-fountain
      @african-history-fountain 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

@@GgaskiaAta The British built just ONE university in Nigeria in their 80 year rule there. Today, in just 60 years of independence, Nigeria has over 300 universities, built by the Nigerian govt and Nigerian private organisations. So get your facts straight. Plus Nigeria uses 90% standard gauge rail built by the Nigerian govt, and not the largely abandoned, antiquated narrow gauge lines of the British. So do your research before posting anything about Nigeria. Don’t mislead the public.

Tinubu didn't change the national athem. Tinubu assented a bill pomulgated by the Senate and national assembly. The National assembly is the representatives of the Nigerian people collectively. They changed the National athem
National Assembly Passes Bill to Change National Anthem from 'Arise O Compatriots' to 'Nigeria, We Hail Thee' The Senate, just like the House of Representatives, yesterday, passed a bill to change the current National Anthem, “Arise O Compatriots,” to the country's old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The proposed legislation was titled, “National Anthem Bill, 2024.”
The bill passed third reading after the upper chamber considered the report of its joint Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Federal Character, and that and Inter Government Affairs.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had at a public hearing on the matter on Monday, advised the federal lawmakers to engage in wider consultations before passing the bill.
The bill was read for the first and second time last Thursday, at both chambers.
It received an accelerated hearing at the lower house as it was read for the first, second and third time.
The bill however passed second reading at the Senate and the Presiding Officer, Godswill Akpabio, referred it to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative actions.
The bill would be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.

I will never sing Tinubu's Anthem
    An anthem of darkness
    Of walking deep into gloom
    Where wickedness occupies the room
I will never sing Tinubu's Anthem
    An Anthem for callous souls
That eat the flesh of their people
And drink the blood of their own children
I will never sing Tinubu's Anthem.
