  • One of the deadliest wildfires in the United States in recent years leveled homes and businesses on the lush Hawaiian island of Maui this past Tuesday. Correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports on how residents and tourists were caught off-guard by the fast-moving flames, turning postcard-perfect Lahaina into ruins, as officials warn the number of dead could rise significantly in the weeks to come.

    I was there in Feb (2023). I'm stunned that its all gone. I'm looking up people who worked there to see if they are okay. One girl that ran the whale watching lost her house.
    Lahaina was one of the best parts of my Maui trip. As far as I'm concerned it was the heart of Maui. So many people worked there. Tourists flocked there. And it was where many people caught their boats to go out on the ocean. It's a huge loss. And finally, the amazing Lahaina Banyan Tree. I hope it will survive. Time will tell.

    I was lucky enough that my home wasn't destroyed, but we should all do what we can to pull together and help them rebuild. And who we shoukd write to in our government to push for accountability to rebuild responsibility to help ordinary citizens get their lives back together.

    The Lahaina that grew out of the 60's, 70's and 80's was truly a special place, no place is perfect but that special convergence of aloha between locals and respectful newcomers was magical like hey maybe this isn't a fantasy maybe humans can live together in good will and live by the golden rule. Sadly it will never be rebuilt the way it was. Even before the fire things have changed as society has changed. Lahaina and west Maui will rebuild and hopefully prosper one day, but I don't think it even makes sense to try to replicate the old magical Lahaina, society has changed, its just not going to happen now.

    I've read that the west side of Maui is always dry this time of year because it gets far less rain than the rest of the island, so they always have wildfires every year. The only thing different about this year is the hurricane winds knocked over a lot of power lines which started fires and spread than far more quickly than ever before. Usually a hurricane brings lots of rain with the winds, but this time it didn't rain enough to stop the fires.

      Yes the Leeward side of ALL THE Hawaiian islands are the dry side . Some almost desert . The rainy season is in the Winter.
      Bigger question is why with 60 mph winds did the power lines spark ? Not maintained !

    • @lavapix
      @lavapix ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The hurricane passed 500 miles to the south. Maui and the Big Island were caught in an area between a strong high pressure and Dora creating these extreme tradewinds. Red Flag warnings were posted days before the fires but no one expected 70-80 mph winds. The first fires were on the Big Island in the usual areas. Terrain and wind direction helped contain those fires. Yes, the leeward sides are typically dry. Our brushfires are usually started by fallen powerlines. Then you have cigarettes, hot vehicles parked over dry grass, and arson.

    • @photina78
      @photina78 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@vicm6561 The winds were at least 70 to 80 mph, but a witness who watched power lines blown down said the gusts were 140 mph. I think you're right the lines probably weren't well maintained, and a retired California firefighter said they obviously didn't do controlled burns during the winter to minimize the amount of flammable dry grass and foliage.

    Same thing happened to us in Paradise CA November 8th 2018 Our homes were leveled to ash but most of the trees were still standing houses, steel buildings turned to ash, cars, trucks flipped upside down but still the gas tanks were still intact, We were hit so back in Paradise 11.8.2018 by Directed Energy Weapons looks the same as Paradise did, Maui, looks to be the same MO, as Paradise, Fire was. Cars burned out even the glass windows some of the cars in Maui had large holes in the hood of the cars and trucks looks like a Direct Energy Attack to me but trees next to the cars still had leaves on them. This in my humble opinion is another attack on our towns, Agenda 21 burn the people off the land and take everything away from them. The Winds came up soon as the fire started right? Just like in Paradise and many mountain communities in Northern California, Prove me I'm wrong. Learn what's happening people our towns are under attack none other than by the New World Order People taking everything away from us, burning our towns down. NO EARLY WARNING SYSTEM in place tells me they wanted lot's of Causality’s Death's just like in Paradise we had no warning at all these people they aren't playing they are Dead serious about destroying everything the people have worked so hard for. I sure wish the people would get a clue. Oh thanks mainstream media for NOT Doing any investigating on the fire your worthless media covering up the CRIME Against the People of Maui. May God Help us all, against these EVIL People behind the crimes against humanity. Cars and trucks lined up along the side of the road with glass and wheels melted no trees next to the cars and trucks melted just like Paradise. When will people realize our towns are under attack one town at a time.
    DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS Devastated Maui It was an attack on the people of MAUI Just like what happened to us in Paradise CA on November 8th 2018 Exact Same Weaponry was use to take down Maui
    a friend wrote a book called Paradise Lost The Great California Fire Chronicles 109 pages and it catalogs all the fires and weaponry used on the fires in CA between 2008 thru 2018 by James W. Lee you can find the book online.
    It takes will, to want to know the truth, wherever it may lead you. And it takes Love, to heal the wounds from the physical, mental and Spiritual battles we are all facing today. The first steps to any occulted truths are a willingness to want to know rather than beLIEve, trust and blindly accept the official narratives provided by those in Secret Societies with hidden agendas who care not about your safety, or your well-being. Meaningful change can only occur when the many are educated, alerted, and informed as to who, what, how and why these “new abnormal” fires are occurring and why the official narratives about the reasons and causes of the fires, and the responses by official in power, are beyond the pale of basic common sense to anyone with eyes to see, ears to hear, and a mind to think for themselves.

      yeah..they really think we are that stupid-smh: As someone who has lived in a coastal city (FL) with the occasional CAT 4 skirting past, I assure you the Hurricane was too far from shore to cause tropical storm force, CAT 1 force winds. At the distance Dora was, I could see it cause maybe 20-30 MPH wind gusts and that's if it was more like 200 miles away. Somehow I don't believe the Hawaiian people would not have secured their power lines for at least 100 MPH winds. The climate conditions were right to spread the fire, but how it started and how it spread-questionable. "Even though it was about 500 miles away, Dora upset the balance, influencing the low-pressure system and increasing the difference in air pressure resulting in unusually strong trade winds. “Hurricane Dora is very far away from Hawaii, but you still have this fire occurrence here." www.nbclosangeles.com/weather-news/how-maui-wildfires-spread-hurricane-dora-drought/3204307/#:~:text=Even%20though%20it%20was%20about,have%20this%20fire%20occurrence%20here. @@TS-wh4ey

    The fewest comments I see are about the human lives lost (and some may still be alive?), especially older children who were home alone since it was a work day. The worst way to die is by fire and fire mostly fast, and in this situation, the hurricane winds speeded the fire up where there was very little time to react and act.
