His Barry Manilow Live 1977 album is also great! Has almost all of his hits at the time on it. I owned the 8track as a teenager ( tells you how long ago that was🤣). I played it until it broke. You can find the entire album here on youtube 😊
Manilow was my guilty pleasure in high school. LOL Weekend in New England was my Fav:) I played violin so I loved his use of Classical music for his base structure of his music.
Yes! Weekend in New England, I swear I saw a TV Special with Barry and Valerie Bertinelli performing a version, now I can't find it, and think the dreamt the whole thing!
One of the best crooners EVER, with a very deep rabbit hole to explore. You should try “Looks Like We Made It,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again” or “Somewhere in the Night.”
Dude was magical at the time 51 top 40 hits including 13 #1's and 2 Grammys as well as Songwriters Hall of Fame, and America's Pop Music hall of Fame. Sold 85 million records. Barry was a force and this was his 1st big hit. Too cool young lady!!
He was a real hit-maker in the 70's and 80's-- for himself and some big names like Dionne Warwick (Whitney's auntie). Listen to "Looks Like We Made it" "Copa Cabana (At The Copa") and "I Write the Songs."Also, he wrote some songs for movies ! He also wrote some jungles for famous product commercials.
Hello Angela: People are rarely indifferent about Barry Manilow; they either love him or hate him. He was one of the most prolific musicians of his era though and definitely left his mark on pop music, for sure. I just noticed in the video how high he sits in relation to the piano keyboard. Never noticed that before. I enjoyed this song theme series of yours. It resulted in some interesting comments, background facts, and more than a few rediscoveries. Thank you for all the effort you put into it!👍👍❤❤
Manilow was 6' 2'' in his prime .... and has always complained about his long arms and legs ..... kind of a fun fact .... * I believe the video in this clip was at the Grammys in February of 1976 ....
dont care about those who hate him with utmost respect to you, here in Australia he is a superstar, his songs are incredible xoxo i can tell you love him x
Here’s an interesting fact for you. This record along with many other of Barry’s records was produced by Ron Dante. Who’s that you ask? Well he’s the one singing sugar sugar in the archies song you just listened to.
The original name of the song was “ Oh Brandy “ by Scott English. Clive Davis suggested Barry record the cover song . With permission he recorded it as “ Mandy “ . Barry Manilow is one of the GOAT’s.
Barry Manilow was one of my first crushes. That voice still gives me chills. So many songs that not only did he write and perform, he wrote many many songs for other artists and for commercials. You should react to "I made it through the rain" "Weekend in New England" and "I write the songs"
in my High School Days Barry Manilow was huge, he did a lot of sad songs and Fun ones, 2 you should listen to are (Sad) When October Goes, and Fun VSM (live)
Truly a guilty pleasure this song came out when I was in highschool and if you admitted that you liked Barry you really risked getting the shit kicked out of you
He wrote and performed such beautiful music. My favorite is Time In New England where I grew up with his music. He also wrote several well known Jingles for TV commercials.
Mandy began life as Brandy, a single by its co-author Scott English and Manilow turned it into something more expansive: amping up the vocal drama, layering on the orchestra, choir and crashing drums until its finale sounded like a homage to Phil Spector. Bazza's breakthrough hit - it emphatically demonstrated his path ahead lay as a balladeer supremo.
Also Brandy was recorded by Bunny Walter's as a cover of original by Scott English. Apparently Manilow heard Bunny Walter's and recorded Mandy. Check out Bunny Walter's really awesome
You have such wonderful reactions and you're such a wonderful person Angela. I've been watching a lot of your reactions lately and subscribed today. Barry Manilow's songs have been a guilty pleasure of mine as well. This song in particular makes me look back at my younger days and how easily and thoughtlessly I'd break up with someone for the most idiotic reasons. Granted, I was one the receiving end of these breakups as well, but I can only reflect on my own actions and I knew some really nice, sweet girls/women and never really gave them a chance. Songs like "Mandy" make me wonder what could have been and it makes me sad to know I'll never be able to find out.
Always loves Barry even when it wasn't 'cool' saw him in concert..he was bloody amazing..try weekend in new England..somewhere in the night the great could it be magic..obviously the famous.Copacabana
Love Barry Manilow. Some folks don't know that he started his career writing for TV commercials like: "I'm stuck on Band-Aid, cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!" and "You deserve a break today, so get up and get away, to McDonalds!" also "And like a good neighbor, State Farm is there!" Among others. He never believed his voice was good enough to break into pop music. As for this song "Mandy?" It was origionally written by someone else, and waa called "Brandy"
Barry Manilow is awesome. This is a generic song of his - it brought him to fame in the '70s. But he is exceptionally talented - some of his songs are phenomenal! I like the songs that aren't super popular. He's my favorite singer of all time!
Saw him 4 times at the Universal back in the day. Always did a New Years show. He is the reason i started playing piano in High School and still do. I probably play something of his daily. Arranged for Bette Midler before this shot him to stardom. Wonderful musician and pianist. Thanks for posting.
It was never cool in school to like Barry Manilow back then in my era and I was early primary school years, but I always liked his music, he connected and wrote some great songs that could reach out, but this song reminds me of a girl named Mandy Becker, I had a huge crush on her because she reminded me of the lead female in a movie called the Magnificent gunfighter, which my mom took me to see during school hours, my mom loved westerns, great movie btw, cowaboys hawt girls and samurai swords what could a kid want more, understand we were years behind the US so this would be mid to late 70s I’m still very low single digits maybe 6. I’ll never forget her, she sent me away, just like the song but in reverse. I asked her out on her way back to school from her lunch break she lived just up the road from our primary school and would go home every lunch time, took me weeks to work up the courage to ask her out, she was so hawt, easily the best looking girl in school, we were both pretty popular in out class’s back then too, still she sent me away. Songs always reminds me of her. Great reaction, one thing I do get from you is you have a great ear and great taste regardless of the era.
I feel the same way about Mandy that you do it was a nice sweet song but I'm going to tell you you have to listen to could it be magic it is four five times emotional soul searching essentials lyrics and music you ever heard it is so beautiful you have to listen to it it's called could it be magic by Barry manilow and I am sure some of his fans on your site are trying to get you to listen to it they know what they're talking about that song is awesome 😲👌
Legend…period.Voice and piano outstanding.50 years now.One that really gets to me had to do with a relation he had called” Two Ships that pass in the Night.”
Incredible musician and songwriter... and a pretty good singer, as well. I read somewhere that he had planned to title this song BRANDY, but Looking Glass already had a song by that name so he changed it to MANDY. Don't know if that's true, but I did read it somewhere.
You liked his piano playing? Fun Factoid about Barry & Bette Midler.. Midler made a name for herself in the early 1970s singing high-energy concerts downtown with Barry Manilow as her pianist
some others not included in previous comments: I write the songs, Tryin to get the feeling, Copacabana. But I think his best song was Could it be magic. Started out writing jingles for tv ads/commercials. An underrated songwriter/singer.
Mandy made Manilow a star. Before that he was a jingle writer - “I am stuck on a bandaid and bandaids stuck on me” and “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there”. Then came Mandy and I Write the Songs and the rest is history. 😁❤️
Fine voice. Ready to Take a Chance Again, Made it Though the rain are well worth a listen. Only those lacking confidence limit themselves to one genre and concern themselves with what others think.
Beautiful song..met him in Palm Springs when I lived there. He invited me to his party...and I was so mad I couldn't go because I had a hangover and couldn't go. I even went and got some Vicodin but still couldn't make it...lol.
Barry is a legend, now that he’s 80 people everywhere are openly proclaiming to be Fanilows. He didn’t get into Juilliard by accident, he is a stud on piano. Not to mention the king of soft rock and an all-time great songwriter.
You know, he was extraordinarily talented. Our 7/8 grade Choir Instructor was his twin, voice and piano playing, it was weird. He cool…, Mr Jones. “I write the songs that make the whole world song , I wrote the songs i’d love and special things…., I wrote the songs”. My favorite, at least Mr Jones’. lol
Doll, Barry I believe was rumored to be gay...thus "Mandy" likely was a guy. Barry...for years invented simple jingles for commercials. I don't know when he made it big...but big he was. Massive amount of hits...and no "flash in the pan" to be sure. This is notably beautiful. Keep up the good work. Subbed
Now that we are close to the Holidays give Manilows Christmas album (because it's Christmas) a listen. Standards are played albeit a different spin on them and with new songs you might have never heard of.
Love ur emotion. Listened to this other reaction EMPRESS. She irritated me. You're a gem. Do weekend in new England, studio musician, looks like we made it
#DayOneReacts ... Fun Facts... Barry Manilow was the Pianist for a famous singer name Bet (Bette) Midler; with her encouragement he was able to get a record deal and one of his first songs went #1 and stayed on the Charts forever; it might still be on there... LOL The song, "I write the Songs" This song was so popular that preachers called it of the Devil and would say it was a description of Satan.... I remember as a kid hearing these sermons and thinking how could they determine it was the devil? But back then in a conservative church music was a source of attack....
All hail the 'King Of Crescendo'. Barry is the male version of Barbra Streisand and people either love his music or hate it.. I personally love most of his songs and this one in particular. To each their own, though.
This song was originally called Brandy and it was up tempo lol MANILOW slowed it down and they changed the name because there had just been another hit song called Brandy. This song launched his career and he's into his 6th decade and pushing 80 years old but still has an amazing voice
Barry's seating position in front of the piano was pretty unique as well! It was in between sitting and standing, and I don't know the story behind that, but I'm sure someone else will let you know! Later!
Barry explained that in an interview one time… he said that it was mainly so he could be seen better behind the piano, but that he also liked that it helped him to “dig in” when he plays.
What is a music reaction? It is a feeling you get from deep inside that comes to the surface after hearing a song that touches your soul. When the singer can bring a tear or smile to your face, then you know the writer and singer have done their job with the song. When it makes a lasting memory in you heart and mind, than it has created the perfect reaction because it done this on different levels on your being. To me, that is a reaction to a beautiful song .when you walk away with a smile on your face. Now listen to this Barry song, one of his best. Oh by the way,Mandy was his dog not a person. th-cam.com/video/vHIdHIWfnl4/w-d-xo.html

His Barry Manilow Live 1977 album is also great! Has almost all of his hits at the time on it. I owned the 8track as a teenager ( tells you how long ago that was🤣).

Yes! Yes! Then the version he had Donna Summer do... he even does her version in some concerts.. its faster but just as pretty.
I am so relieved you mentioned a good one and didn't mention Copacabana. Another one that's powerful is Looks Like We've Made it.
Manilow was my guilty pleasure in high school. LOL Weekend in New England was my Fav:) I played violin so I loved his use of Classical music for his base structure of his music.

Another amazing singer/songwriter. I can still remember first hearing his first hit "Could It Be Magic" on the radio!

Wow I remember when I was a little kid back in the 70s he was a huge performer. This really brings back memories for me miss those days so much 🤔
This song is so relaxing and soothing. I love easy listening music.
Im glad you found Barry. Weekend in New England is good too
I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a kid in the 70s on a dark and rainy night, I loved it.
Here’s an interesting fact for you. This record along with many other of Barry’s records was produced by Ron Dante. Who’s that you ask? Well he’s the one singing sugar sugar in the archies song you just listened to.
@ Rick Gibson - Ron Dante also sang on a song called "Tracy." I also think he sang on "Leader of the Laundramat."
Ill add that he wrote the jingle " plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is"
The original name of the song was “ Oh Brandy “ by Scott English. Clive Davis suggested Barry record the cover song . With permission he recorded it as “ Mandy “ . Barry Manilow is one of the GOAT’s.
Great fact. Thought it was Bazzas' original. Classic.
I like Barry manIlow and this song it's really it's been forever since I have heard this song
omg your smile lights up the room when you listen
It's so refreshing to watch someone who actually gets the lyrics and really understands and analyzes.
Weekend in New England is probably my favorite Manilow song.
This is the type of Pop i grew up on. I'm a classic rock guy but i love all the music from my gen. Music was music.
Barry Manilow was one of my first crushes. That voice still gives me chills. So many songs that not only did he write and perform, he wrote many many songs for other artists and for commercials. You should react to "I made it through the rain" "Weekend in New England" and "I write the songs"

Angela, I am glad that you reacted to Barry Manilow. There are at least two dozen hit songs, like Mandy, that you should react to and enjoy. :)
The Great Barry Manilow. There are others "Copa Cabana" & "I Write the Songs" Just to name two.
Aaahhhh sweetness. I saw Barry in concert when I was a young girl. He was so good and I am a sucker for the piano.
Barry Manilow’s career spans decades. Beginning in the 70’s through today, he is still performing.
Great reaction. You may enjoy "Weekend In New England". Also, love the new "Do".
LOVE Barry!! 💖💖
I knew this lady would fall in love with this song, like many before her,
Your taking your time young lady ! what seems to be the problem ?.
You’d love all Barry’s hits! He has a ton just like the Carpenters. Saw him in Vegas a couple years ago and he still sounds amazing!
I’m still a fan of Barry Manilow, and have been since I was a kid.
He wrote and performed such beautiful music. My favorite is Time In New England where I grew up with his music. He also wrote several well known Jingles for TV commercials.

Is Scott English related to England Dan by any any chance?
Also Brandy was recorded by Bunny Walter's as a cover of original by Scott English. Apparently Manilow heard Bunny Walter's and recorded Mandy. Check out Bunny Walter's really awesome

Nothing wrong with some Barry Manilow 😎
Such a HUGE hit
Makes anyone want to have a Brandy listening to that hit.
This song flash's me back to Germany, stationed there in the Army, dancing with a girl in a bar....
That's one high piano stool Barry's got there.
Nobody of that era could touch Linda, she was beyond 🖤
You know, he was extraordinarily talented. Our 7/8 grade Choir Instructor was his twin, voice and piano playing, it was weird. He cool…, Mr Jones.

Hi Ms. D., Mr. Barry is a prolific song writer.. ♠W.G.
