The character names are not Japanese, they're German, and in fact the Japanese audio mostly sticks close to the proper German pronunciations for the names. So for Sense, "Zen-zeh" is the correct pronunciation, just as they say it in the show. You wouldn't want to say it like the English word "sense", because the German word Sense actually means "scythe" in English.
To be honest the word "Sense" seems to be written something like this in "lautschrift/phonetic transcription "ˈzɛnzə (never liked that way of written the way you speak words...). So if you ask me saying "Zen-zeh" is a lot closer to "Sense/Scythe" than the english word "to sense". But still 'I have to agree to go with the way the charackters are pronounce the names as most often they are really close or even spot on.
To be fair he didn't say that Sense's character name WAS Japanese, he commented that "Zen-seh" was the Japanese "pronunciation," which is correct as the show is originally voiced in Japanese. It just happens to be a coincidence that both the Japanese and German pronunciations sound so similar that there is really no difference. There has been much discussion about the "Japanese-ified" (not my word) pronunciations of Frieren character names going around on Reddit for some time now. I have no idea why it seems to be a topic of interest to so many people nor is it unusual for me to be generally confused by human behavior. Just a tiny point of clarification but since it appears to be something you missed I felt it needed to be said in the event others did as well. Particularly since some of this shows more rabid fans have been unwilling to give this man a break over the tiniest things for some bizarre reason. He has previously thanked commenters for informing him that all of the shows character names have German meanings. Anyway, this post got long quick. Fini
@@genesishep For what it's worth, I only commented on this because he specifically asked about the pronunciation for Sense's name. I would not generally offer unsolicited critique of someone's pronunciation. And yes, I know he's probably already aware the names are German, but it's still useful to restate that fact because it provides context to anyone reading it for the rest of my comment talking about German pronunciation.
@@genesishep First: I never intend/intended to attack someone (I know you probably didn't mean me but as you said "the rabid fans") as I love civil discussions and hate people that attack you over dumb things so if you/someone perceved it like that then I am sorry. Second: I never thought that he said that her name was japanese but the part "You wouldn't want to say it like the English word "sense", because the German word Sense actually means "scythe" in English." was the part that somwhat started my comment as the only thing the english "sense" and the german word "sense" have in common is the writing in my opinion (except if there's another eng. "sense" I am not aware of or if I missread that part) Also I can't really think of many names that weren't actually spoken rather well from a german perspective (maybe except for the "ü" in Lügner but even that was okay) I think that might just be a case of having a limited number of sounds and a lot of similar ones as german. Third: I think people are interessted about the names as they atleast somewhat actually have a meaning (whether it's a charackter trait or similar) instead of just being "cool names". Sometimes it's just interesting to think what the mangaka's intentions were, but that could also just be me...
Frieren asks questions out of this weird thousand year old childlike profound curiosity. "What should I do to be remembered?" What a question. Not something she learned from anyone else. in all her time. Himmel made her think about that, Himmel made her consider that for even a moment, that importance. And it stuck with her without her knowing it. And decades afer his passing, roughly 110 years since she adventured with him, she recalls it clear as day, she remembers the lesson. Flamme may have taught her magic, taught her how to fight, but this journey where she piece by piece realizes that Himmel in just 10 years time through a perirod of time she disregarded, he taught her how to live. It crushes and warms me.
Only reacter I watch. He’s 100% genuine with his reactions and personality which I found a lot of the others aren’t. He also really pays attention to what is going on even when plots get confusing. It even helps me understand episodes of anime’s when i get confused 😂 He’s great!
Methode (the badass lady mage with the long brown hair) is one of my favorite side characters that were introduced this arc, despite her being mostly in the background. Her vibe reminds me of Nico Robin a lot.
Btw here are some translations for the german names I think its quite interesting because they give away something about the character, like the personality in my opinion Frieren = freezing: she is cold, like emotionless (donr unsterstand human feelings) Fern = far: she seems distanced in the way she acts (emotionaly) Denken = thinking: he is strategic Stark = strong: he is strong Kraft = power: he has power Himmel = heaven: he is heavenly/smooth Eisen = Iron, he is like iron Heiter = cheerful: he is cheerful Flamme = flame Übel= bad: she acts bad Laufen = Running: she is fast Richter = judge Etc.
I wanted to add some things to the things you said here, Heiter is also used to describe someone that is drunk/tipsy Übel would be Imo more fitting to translate as nasty, but is usually still an descriptor for bad. Richter is probably more in reference to the Richter-scale used to determine the intensity of an earthquake, which is why he has earth magic. What I also love about Himmel's name is that it translates to heaven, which is Frieren's endgoal to meet with Himmel again.
For context Michael, Flamme said that her or Serie could never beat the demon king because they cant imagine living in a peaceful era without the Demon king. In Frieren, magic is a world of imagination, a visualisation. If you cant visualise magic, u cant do it. So if they cant visualise a world without a demon king, they cant achieve it.
The way this show tells you what you are going to find, the challenge to come, but then still surprises you with subversion when you actually encounter it, is magical.
While Sense's past four exams never passed anybody, it neither got anybody killed as well unlike Genau's (the first exam's proctor) which is why Sense says that unlike Genau, she's a pacifist.
The coolest thing about seeing Frieren replica is we get to witness at least some of the offensive spells she has under her belt that we never got to see
Not that anyone asked, but that dude who went in the dungeon alone and argued with Denken about working together sounded a lot like Taito Ban. Great reaction, Michael! Been watching your vids for a while.🔥
Other mages learn and use magic based on studying and learning and practicing. Ubel is a mage that uses magic based on feeling and intuition. When she empathizes with another she understands them and then understands how their magic works thus copy their spells on feeling alone. In D&D terms, she's a sorcerer in a world of wizards.
gotta love Frieren, she made it look easy when she too down the barrier, but it wasn't easy at all, she had to spend the entirety of the first day understand how the barrier was created, cause, as Genau said, you can't just brute force it, she had to deconstruct it. Which is also the reason why Frieren told the girls to not try to catch the Stille on day1, is the fight happened on day1 Frieren wasn't ready to take the barrier down and Kanne couldn't have used the water. And now we're already on phase2, which is great as well, Sense really bringing out the pacifict in her for this one, making sure the applicants have no reason to fight each other, what a kind girl :)
In the moment that Frieren casts her spell to break the barrier there is like two frames there it actually shows Series silhouette. This anime goes unreasonably hard with animation and details.
Denken was out of mana... But he wasn't out of options!!!😂 I hate that the fist fight was off screen man. There is something oddly satisfying about a fist fight in a magic/fantasy setting.
Thanks a lot for your great reaction😆....i definitely enjoyed this video. This anime charactors' names have German words...pronunciation s->[z], w->[v], or d->[t]....in JP univercities almost students learn German as 2nd foreign language. Any way this anime be better than better ! 🤩i actually hoping next.
5:16 well, yes and no. She did defend at the right time, however, her defense did absolutely nothing. His attack went right through it and hit them. 6:00 he was just in the middle of explaining why she wouldn't be able to do that in the first place. Sense is pronounced as Zenze
the arrogant one who enter on dungeon first his name is Ton voiced by Taito Ban (Jinwoo VA from solo leveling), the badass girl you saying is Methode voiced by Reina Ueda (Kanao from demon slayer, Cha from Solo Leveling, Lemon from Mashle)
Names in this anime follow the German spelling and pronunciations. Unlike English, German is fairly consistent and way closer to a phonetic alphabet than English ever could be lol. The Japanese pronunciation doesn't always match the German spelling 1 to 1, but they're usually close and in this case, it's pretty spot on. Serie is actually one of the only examples I can think of off the top of my head that the way they're pronouncing it in the Japanese accent doesn't match how those letters should be pronounced in German. It sounds to me like they're saying "Say-ree-ay" but if staying true to the German pronunciation, it would be closer to "Say-'ree." no 3rd syllable, just a long "ee" sound at the end.
Mhh I have rewatched the episode multiple times, but just now realized that you could have known that Übel wasn't the one casting Sorganeil on Ehre. If it was Übel die strings aren't as neat unlike Wirbel's. Even though I knew that for some time I always just overlocked it in this situation...
So far, Serie is still stronger than Frieren and honestly, that probably will be the case till she dies. Serie is a living library of grimoires and has so much mana that it’s fluctuating + she’s seriously old even when compared to Frieren. She would be a middle aged~senior woman and Frieren would still be a teenager or a young adult in human terms

Everybody gangsta until they see a Health bar with title "Frieren the Slayer"
"I would've shattered my bottle a long time ago."
Denken instantly entered my top three favorite characters in Frieren.
Denken apparently had another hidden form of magic known as "These hands"
I was not familiar with his game what a badass😂
Denken may be outta mana…
*BUT NOT OUTTA OPTIONS*
Loved how he went straight hands with that other group😂
Poor denken, first had to face frieren in first exam and now her clone in second one 😂
Both of them clapped him 😂
