I love his personal twitch streams from his office where they are preparing the latest warframe build to go live. I learn what it feels like to be working there just from watching.
See, I KNEW there was something up! I used to be a Quake 3 player so the speed and movement abilities of this game truly spoke to me, as like little to no other games. It is like a next step. Looking back, Quake 3 seems to be a very basic level of complexity, compared to WF. But has that same skill/movement enjoyment aspect of it. Yeah I agree I could listen to him talk about DE, game design, warframe, etc. if i taught a class on game design I would be trying to get him in as a guest speaker.
Yes thank you, I didn't know they had to get money through backers like kickstarter sort of, I'd of totally done so if I knew that at the time. Thanks again~
I imagine Steve said that from his perspective as a guy who knows the game inside and out lol. For someone just stepping into it, 100 hours at least feels like what it would take.
Man watching this in 2023 is so amazing You can tell Steve is still that amazing developer. Super excited for Soulframe and continuously excited for Warframe
Total Warframe addict. The amount of Warframes alone is crazy. And then the Primes who are worth the upgrade. Last week i finally got Nidus, every time you think you found your main Warframe you discover one that's more fun to play. Oh and how about all the weapons, all with their own unique look and feel to them. I was a die-hard Destiny player, but the lack of depth and variety made me put down D2 pretty fast and made me hop right back into Warframe, just in time for the POE. Just started playing this game this week, I'm pleasantly surprised how good it is for F2P. I like the gameplay, design etc. As for the fashion aspects that's not really my thing, but good on them its bringing in the cash to keep this going
Regarding publishers: Thank god, that is a thing of the past. Nowadays publishers wouldn't say stupid shit like "linear singleplayer games are not as popular as in the past, gamers now want games as service". Wait...
Here are a few other things publishers have said in the past that proved to be wrong: th-cam.com/video/18MqtJ7UD0M/w-d-xo.html I've been PC Master Race for over 25 years, but popular, linear, single-player games got me to buy a piece of hardware that my PC utterly outclasses. The only I games I have on my PS4 (besides Warframe) are: Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, The Last of us Remastered, and Horizon Zero Dawn (I'd have a bought the PS4 just for that). 'Not popular' my ass. Just because publishers like EA have taken popular and profitable franchises, thought to themselves 'we can sell millions of the next installment too, and if we give it to a less experienced team, we can pay them less and save a fortune on the development, to make even more profit', and in the words of Steve 'bilked their customers', doesn't mean that linear single player games aren't wanted, only what that publisher does to them.
There are so many great people and aspects to Warframe. But, imho, THE reason Warframe is a successful game is because the items that exsist in the platinum market are also 90% obtainable in game and most of all tradeable between players, point blank. This is why the game continues to grow and is the smartest decision any developer has ever made. Love you DE, continue to take my money :)
One can cleary see thanks to the Documental and the interviews how different are Digital Extremes developers when compared to other Devs in the gaming industry. This is the main reason why Warframe after 5 years is still alive and getting better and better while other companies with millions and millions in budget can't achieve the same results (you know what I mean).
Sadly for other companies too far up their own ass, DE know what it's like to nearly go bankrupt and lose all rights of making games and they know that if they want to make their money then talking with the community is one of the best ways to go and know how to proceed forward.
Watch their live-streams and you'll learn this pretty quickly. But most devs are actually just as passionate, the problem lies with the publishers that control how much time is given for the devs to show all their creativity. It sucks that devs always get the blame for literally everything when they can only control so much when they don't have the freedom they could have if they were independent like with Warframe. Very rarely do Publishers actually give the time and creativity for devs to make something they truly want. It's sad.
I'm still blow away that both Warframe and the original Dark Sector kept getting turned down entirely because they were sci-fi. Especially considering some of the biggest game franchises around the time were sci-fi.
IKR. It was time when series like Mass Effect and motherfucking Halo were in their prime, selling millions of copies. I mean, what the actual fuck is wrong with those people?
Modern Warframe was probably the reason for that narrow-mindedness going around. COD was such a massive hit, everybody wanted to copy that all of a sudden.
I’m glad big publishers turned them down, even tho it was hard times for them for a while the game surely wouldn’t be what it is today under a huge publisher. It would be just another gross, pay to win game
Absolutely right! People who don't appreciate Sci-Fi (and science in general) are way too common, and often assume everyone else thinks the same. Notice how SciFi, Horror and Fantasy genres are often lumped into the same category for movies and books, etc (a pet peeve of mine). So that mindset prevails. Fortunately, the true enthusiasts are generally very supportive. Good science fiction takes a lot of careful thought and understanding of the real world around us. Zombie with shotguns book number 874 and Rune Magic with Dragons book #10,007 require no predictive imagination or understanding of anything much (like science) other than story telling. They can be great stories but have nothing to say about our future possibilities. I love scifi because of the imaginative ideas brought forth that have some kind of predictive connection with reality (physics, astronomy, etc). Warframe sits somewhere between scifi and fantasy IMO.
I was quite peeved at the time, because I had a want for Sci-Fi gaming of a Diablo-style nature and publishers hardly ever touched it, though a few MMOs got out there but died quickly. Phantasy Star Online was one mainstay, but definitely had issues keeping up with timely updates (particularly in the West). Once SEGA pretty much gave up on the West, it seemed that the genre was up for us. Now we have a couple with Warframe being the leader. In some ways, as much as Warframe is a success story from the brink; Warframe also simultaneously could signify a success story for the Sci-Fi cooperative looter genre from the brink of its own. Obviously, publishers (including ones who had their own IPs in the genre) simply thought people (with similar interests to us) didn’t exist, so they just left those players out in the dark.
I guess that answers it - they simply had no imagination. Also, joke's on them - if anything, Warframe is sci-fantasy So yeah, congratulations, "big publishers"... you played yourself
Think of a blank page. It's literally just a sheet of paper. Someone with no imagination will call it a paper, but someone with an imagination will see the blank slate opportunity. You can literally do anything you want in space, you could even make space something more abstract and completely throw out logic as we know it. But naw, space is lame, dudes.
Miranda G it has nothing to do with that. Some of those business man actually said that the game was pretty good looking. There were a few problems; cod 4 mw-like games, fps about modern warfare, were the trend in those years, space was not, another problem is that, even if the game looks awesome and it can actually be good, if it launched at the wrong time, it will fail. Those business man couldn't predict the new sci-fi trend that was coming, or that a game as good looking warframe was could be actually actualized frequently.
It's always about trends, unfortunately. Space is fuckin awesome, but 'no one wanted space' said all the dumbass producers that could have had a slice of that sweet Warframe pie. That's alright though because Warframe is a hundred times better of without a slippery producer breathing down their neck... maybe that's where they got some ideas for the Corpus c:
Man... I love Warframe. I love the lore. I love the design. I love the combat. I love the music. The characters. The events. I love DE. Love Steve and all the crew. It's just literally the BEST f2p game and for SURE the greatest labor of love. It's friggin amazing.
what a wonderful tribute, noclip, your documentaries illustrate the passion & determination behind the DE success story, thanks for sharing these honest & revealing interviews, a great insight into the struggling origins & bright future of our warframe adventure ! vive le tenno ! - jetpack_jack (proud to be a founder of this crazy game)
I've only been playing for about 7months and still can't believe the interaction between the dev's and there player Base. So I'll keep playing and buy when I can to show my support for there dedication, thank you D E,
How can you not respect this guy? You can just feel his passion for video games, and especially his labor of love, Warframe. Just started the game a few weeks ago, and I'm completely engrossed. That being said, even if I never played another minute of it, I will respect DE for the rest of my life. What a dream it would be to work for such a great company. Thanks for the excellent video(s).
Just look at Star Citizen. How can publishers still be so damned blind to the huge love for sci-fi games. There's obviously a massive market for it. The fact that publishers don't fund space games is the only reason people don't play as many of them. They're like "look how small the sci-fi market, that we don't fund, is". Well no shit Sherlock, how can a genre make money until someone actually makes those games.... So frustratingly short sighted, and it's what causes every publisher to pump out nothing but copies of the current trend and why we get so few truly unique games.
I only did that once when I was studying. I'm not saying I saved the database with every version I save just in case, but my ex-company used to have 2 mirror HDD just in case.. and it wasn't because of me.
I remember the early days of Warframe and peeps in media were harping ont it, I didn't get the appeal but thought I'd give it a go and see what they hype was about. Many years and 1200 hours ingame later I would have to say it's my go to game for a quick fix or to binge play. Love the game and devs so much, have had so much joy over the years where few things in life get the endorphins going. Wis DE all the best in the future. Granted the game may not be perfect for all, but it really hits the spot for me, especially onslaught despite it's initial teeting problems. The thought of gaming life without Warframe is grim, really looking forward to all they will accomplish in the future.
Meh, compare it with Bungie or EA. This is business, sure they do need to earn money. With the exception of founders pack (which is still honorable, people would pay riddicilous money for Excalibur Prime) everything can be get ingame.
A company favor the players and the company. They have made it possible too play for free. Even placing that market is a fair market that doesnt fact Pay too win at all. It values players choose cosmetics and saving time. A free game with good developers make you comfortable too help them out aswell having fun
I remember playing VERY EARLY Warframe, when Grineer Lancers had Burstons. And I remember there was basically one tileset, the Asteroid Base Tileset, and I loved running through a seemingly endless and random Stage full of Enemies, it was something I had never seen before, and every Mission was similar but different. Also it had this amazing feature where Mission Objectives would change Mid-Mission, that was amazing.
Probably dropped a good 300-600 bucks on this game since 2013. I started playing during the Banshee update. Don't regret a single penny. These devs, even when I disagree with their decisions, are just a great bunch of people.
Warframe is awesome. I hope more people get through those 40 hours like me. Running through the cold Venus in a robot suit gets to a whole other level once you understand what that suit is, and what really controls it.
I've been playing since the end of Tethra's doom... Man... The community, sometimes i just sit in chat and help random people with whatever problems they have XD
Without a doubt one of companies in the gaming industry which listens to players a lot, if not the most, when it comes to the state of the game. I started playing WF years ago and was awed on how much the game already changed over time. Do they always nail it? No - but they surely do take care of feedback. I recall one of my first experiences with WF was that updates were applied so often. I was/am in awe on how many times i see redtext for patch updates. In contrast to many other games - this game gets updated by the hour if required. The ethics, judging from this documentary, are beyond anything any other cash-grabbing company is able to uphold. I supported them with plenty of money - because i always felt it was value for money - the usual "go for a movie with popcorn" comparison is not even a thing over years. Having said that - the open world expension did not really grab me - too much grind - and i fear they are heading the wrong direction - then again - thats just me. But however the game develops i am confident Steve and Co will manage to turn it around Thanks Steve - admire your ethics! You are one of a kind and i wish gaming industry would follow in your footsteps!
I remember trying Warframe in its earliest days. I was between jobs at the time so I could really devote time to it, but I gave up rather quickly because the progression felt extremely slow. It gave me that "pay to not be frustrated" feel you get from most mobile phone games. Five years later, Jim Sterling discovered Warframe and made me rediscover it. I've played almost daily since. A year later (today) I'm MR24 and have spent close to $100 on Warframe, none of which I regret. There's nothing I don't love about Warframe. I don't even have to spend money on it, I just do because it feels worth it, to a similar extent to a Netflix subscription or my VPN : those are things where I feel I'm really getting my money's worth. The collaborative aspect probably explains why the community is so helpful. I've never been on nicer chats with total strangers in any MMO. That too is incredibly lovely in this day and age. Stay true, DE, and I'll always have your back. We all lift together ;-)
I started playing 5 years ago, so right around the time this was made. In a few days, the 2023 TennoCon will celebrate 10 years of Warframe. Ten years, and going strong, because DE is dedicated to the Warframe community like no other game developer has really ever been. Congratulations to Steve and everyone at DE!
I love that warframe has coop. Its so fun playing with friends, having fun without that competition-focus. The dojo is such a smart thing in the game! But also the personal spaceship, makes you have the options of designing stuff yourself and with others. Like the feeling of making stuff possible with others in the dojo. The movement in the gameplay is awesome. The mod-system is awesome. The option for storyline, openworld and classic map action is awesome. I started to play the game when two friends told me about it. I played it for free first, but when I understood the awesomeness I payed. I didnt pay because I needed to get further in the game, I payed because I wanted to help the developers. I think you should keep things in the game like they are and add things without change old stuff. People spend alot of time try to get a weapon they want. If an update comes and their gear get nerfed they will be sad. One sad person writing a story on a forum of how he lost his things after hours of work could be the death of the game. The new stuff seems so fun! Fight as a team against that big spaceship.
Watching these videos and seeing these developers as people and how transparent they are, really makes me want to log back in and play out of sheer appreciation for what they stand for. The devs from these interviews and I know its a shared sentiment across the company is that they care about the players and they do not want to take advantage of them or screw them over
Just did a 3 dollar Patreon and if you Watched this when you have access to multi million dollar shows on Netflix, HBO, ETC Then I think its at the least worthy of considering. the quality is through the roof and this channel deserves every penny. thanks Bro
Wait.. Steve programmed the UT Bots? Are you serious? The bots hold up to this day, and its ridiculous how so many games that include bots get them so wrong.
I've been badgering DE since Dark Sector was released. Besides 1 skin requirement, I'm satisfied with warframe, I think I filled my monetary promise. Looking forward to more.
i believe warframe will become greatest game if they working hard, still dreaming here for open world warframe, imagine we can control our ship on universe and can flying with arcwing for browsing the place on planet (arcwing like a horse in warframe)...sorry my english so bad xD
People like Steve are the type of people that really ake me want to get into game development. The experience in the workplace when working around this dev team must be great.
Warframe truly does have a community made wiki which contains some almost essential information that you can't find written in the game itself. Stuff like how the different damage types work, the different types of armour that enemies have, their resistance to certain damage types, the differences between physical and elemental damage (additive vs multiplicative). So much more..
When he described the story telling that it’s like dark souls I damn nearly shouted in amazement cuz I hope he would say that and he did I remember in dark souls 2 I never heard of this game but it looked cool first 30 minutes in I HATED it and almost took it back but then I kept coming back and did research and after FINALLY beating the first area and then the first boss everything just clicked and I became a part of this amazing universe of cool lore and awesome boss fights it’s now slated for me my most FAVORITE game of all time and that’s exactly what’s happening with warframe for me the more I play and uncover the secrets and lore of it the more I’m loving it I will support this company to the ends of the earth
Awesome video! Congrats to DE!!!!!!! Loving your game. 1000 hours in and still absolutely hooked! The Sacrifice rocked!! Cannot wait for Fortuna and super hyped for Project Railjack. Long live DE and WarFrame. Much love!
Despite the toxic areas the game gets discredited for, the respect for Steve is incredible. This man has a vision and the will to see that through. God protect this man.
Dark Sector was cool. I just started playing Switch Warframe and DAMN! I am speechless. I'd "kill" to buy a $60 Switch version of the game and get an offline mode. DREAM COME TRUE! 13:50 - Instantly respected.
I respect and admire the hell out of this man and the rest of DE. Think about this though, DE had a bunch of problems to officially launch Warframe, it almost never saw the light of day, but it did and it's growing faster every day. Now think about every developer with a brilliant concept for a game that never gets to actually launch. Publishers make me mad sometimes.
30:10 "the mess of things" is something that could be fixed just by looking at other games that did/do it right (Monster Hunter World, a very lore heavy game, is a good example). Small Tutorial videos would be a great help. 37:45 one such example is "Raiders of the Broken Planet". It looked like a Warframe contender, but the reward and progression system failed to retain players... So bad they were/are. Also, thank you NoClip for such great videos!
Monster Hunter World is not lore heavy, it is story heavy... Considering that it centers itself around what is currently going and not things that have happened that still matter to this day; if you want lore heavy, try 4U.
This wraps up our extended interviews for the Warframe series. Thanks so much to everyone who watched these videos, we hope we did the story justice.
I just can't get enough of these warframe docs / extended interviews :)
"We don't wanna get you hard now." - Steve Sinclair
"Sexbox" (around 3 min mark)
And a lot more..
I love this guy
It's sad.
Steve is a great example of what having a vision looks like. And then share it.
"To bad it's space..." Space is a near endless unexplored void where anything you can imagine (and even things you can't) could exist ;-; bruh what
I guess that answers it - they simply had no imagination. Also, joke's on them - if anything, Warframe is sci-fantasy
So yeah, congratulations, "big publishers"... you played yourself
Space is Empty. That's what they usually mean. It's hard to put things into it, without it being boring or.. scary.. silent.
Man... I love Warframe. I love the lore. I love the design. I love the combat. I love the music. The characters. The events. I love DE. Love Steve and all the crew. It's just literally the BEST f2p game and for SURE the greatest labor of love. It's friggin amazing.
So much respect for this man. Thanks for the awesome series Noclip!
what a wonderful tribute, noclip, your documentaries illustrate the passion & determination behind the DE success story, thanks for sharing these honest & revealing interviews, a great insight into the struggling origins & bright future of our warframe adventure !
vive le tenno ! - jetpack_jack (proud to be a founder of this crazy game)
3:29 Sexbox. I love this man
I thought he said sex bots
I've only been playing for about 7months and still can't believe the interaction between the dev's and there player Base. So I'll keep playing and buy when I can to show my support for there dedication, thank you D E,
Yes! Steve is one of my favorite Warframe people, cause he's weird as hell, but fucking awesome.
Radioactive Penguin i still remember the first stream Ive watched and it was him in pink shorts
"we have to laugh about it now, to save yourself from crying" omg
How can you not respect this guy? You can just feel his passion for video games, and especially his labor of love, Warframe. Just started the game a few weeks ago, and I'm completely engrossed. That being said, even if I never played another minute of it, I will respect DE for the rest of my life. What a dream it would be to work for such a great company. Thanks for the excellent video(s).
Publishers: "Space sucks"
Halo:CE: *exists*
Publishers: "Have you heard of this space thing?"

It's mind blowing to know that Steve and the DE team have been responsible for some of my fondest memories in gaming , both growing up and even today.
Thank you for the amazing series. I started playing Warframe about 5 month ago and never stopped, this game is awesome.
Deleted the whole database??! I'd have died on the spot if I were him!
AirAquila its a very DE mistake tho and kind of funny.
press red button to win... or not
I only did that once when I was studying.
Steve is now the CEO. Because he deserves it.
I'd love to see another interview with him. Spacemom did an excellent GDC talk that's on YT too
Ninjas play free, those that can't "git gud" .. pay in salty tears.
Keep telling yourself that, bud. Those guys have weekly meetings brainstorming how to milk you, ninjas, samurai and all.
Milkjas
Meh, compare it with Bungie or EA. This is business, sure they do need to earn money. With the exception of founders pack (which is still honorable, people would pay riddicilous money for Excalibur Prime) everything can be get ingame.
A company favor the players and the company. They have made it possible too play for free. Even placing that market is a fair market that doesnt fact Pay too win at all. It values players choose cosmetics and saving time. A free game with good developers make you comfortable too help them out aswell having fun
Hollow it’s part of the genre
Welcome NEW CEO of Digital extremes
28:00 Best Perspective of Development, so quickly it could've gone like dust in the wind.
38:11 I was WAITING for that line and my god did it feeeeel good.
Thanks for giving us Steve as well!
Thanks for the interview this was really cool to hear!
I feel very confident about the future of Warframe with this man at the helm.
I have so much respect for DE. They are truly special.
this series displays greatly how a game grows. an which role persistence has in development.
I could listen to game devs telling stories about game development for hours probably. Really interesting.
But however the game develops i am confident Steve and Co will manage to turn it around
Thanks Steve - admire your ethics!
Wow, a game designer to the bone. Thank you Steve!
Thank you so much for showing us this delicious slice of a game so many of us love. Astounding work.
Great video and thank you to you and the people who donated to make this video possible!
The mystery of warframe is great and I do love the fact that there is so much to discover still even after I've played it for many hours.
Fight as a team against that big spaceship.
all of his words represents a reminder of what the game developers were about and how they reacted towards their fans with honesty.
It's good to see & hear a developer openly talking about business models in what feels or seems like something that's taboo.
Steve you and the entire DE staff are so good to your fan base. Thank you
Watching these videos and seeing these developers as people and how transparent they are, really makes me want to log back in and play out of sheer appreciation for what they stand for. The devs from these interviews and I know its a shared sentiment across the company is that they care about the players and they do not want to take advantage of them or screw them over
This interview makes me so glad i was a founder. i never knew how close to the cliff's edge DE was.
This interview just reconfirms why I am happy to have found Warframe. Wish I would've been here since the beginning!! My only regret.
Great interview that's had the benefit of giving me some reading material as well.
They've been working on this game for a long time... Wow. Amazing.
Love you Steve! Keep on keeping on!
steve is such a lovable guy, makes u wanna give him a hug
and that is how the legend was born
mad respect for this guy
Such a cool story. I'm really loving what I'm learning about this team.
26:11 You're welcome. Also, Steve is one of favorite developers.
I've been badgering DE since Dark Sector was released. Besides 1 skin requirement, I'm satisfied with warframe, I think I filled my monetary promise. Looking forward to more.
This game's development cycle will go down as one of the greatest rags to riches stories ever in gaming.
i believe warframe will become greatest game if they working hard, still dreaming here for open world warframe, imagine we can control our ship on universe and can flying with arcwing for browsing the place on planet (arcwing like a horse in warframe)...sorry my english so bad xD
muhammad iqbal look! Fortuna is here, nice prediction!
The future called, tighten your butthole its coming
Just wait, evantually i think it will reach there
RAILJACK IS CALLING
DE wants to know your location
Thank you for this!
And now he is CEO, kicking back dr.pepper and destroying coding in his office at 4 in the morning
People like Steve are the type of people that really ake me want to get into game development. The experience in the workplace when working around this dev team must be great.
Dark Sector was a great game.
Eh, it was mediocre. Playable, probably even fun. But it was just Resident Evil (the action-y kind) with throwable blade.
I think it was a really good looking game
Warframe truly does have a community made wiki which contains some almost essential information that you can't find written in the game itself. Stuff like how the different damage types work, the different types of armour that enemies have, their resistance to certain damage types, the differences between physical and elemental damage (additive vs multiplicative). So much more..
I’m one of those 1000hrs players who is still working it out and I love that.
Just wow. Great. It,ll only continue to improve.
Steves crouch keeps the hydroid prime trailer from coming out.
This Guy is my everyday's motivation to not give up on my passion :D !
Thoroughly enjoyed the series, nice work!
Dark Sector was cool. I just started playing Switch Warframe and DAMN! I am speechless. I'd "kill" to buy a $60 Switch version of the game and get an offline mode.
DREAM COME TRUE!
13:50 - Instantly respected.
theres something that i love about this guy. like no homo but his chrisma and passion he shows is just awe inspiring
If Rebb is Spacemom, Steve is Spacedad.
More like a cool space uncle who gives you awesome stuff.
@@NikoD239 yes
Steve Sinclair has much wisdom. Good interview.
27:49 bet someone got a long talking to... poor steve!
It'd be cool to see that gameplay demo Steve was talking about when they were first showing it off to different companies
I am so happy that I decided to give Warframe a second chance, once you get into it, it's worth every single hour.
