  • Lets process NGC 5128 in Pixinsight! Come behind the scenes with me as I do a quick process of data kindly provided by Russ Jacob of Australia. I'll be working with Russ' LRGB data of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) that he took using his newtonian telescope and ASI cooled cmos camera.

These videos are amazing for new astrophotographers. Every time I capture data and go to process it, I realize myself what I could have done to capture it better for next time, but processing is a completely different beast that is not so forgiving. I learn something new from each one of your videos and I really appreciate you documenting your entire process. I have not found anybody else who is so thorough and easy to understand. All I need now is for the next two weeks of thunderstorms to pass and I'll be able to try some of this stuff out. Clear skies!

Brilliant tutorial loaded with process and script techniques I didn't know. Can't wait to try them. And the resulting image didn't look' really nice' as you said........it looked fantastic!

    Hi Shawn,
Thanks for sharing the many details :).
Just wondering if you could explain the advantage of doing a DBE on the RGB channels before combination vs. just doing it on the final RGB combo. Is there less noise or greater contrast? If ABE or DBE is done too many times, it seems like the noise or graininess increases for me. Would love to hear your take.
    Thanks,
    John

Hey John - no real reason to do the DBE on each channel vs on the combined RGB. I just prefer to do it that way. I like working on individual channels as much as I can before combining. For the noise, you could try lowering the tolerance value in DBE and see what affect it has. Might help a bit. Otherwise you'll just need to noise reduction. I usually do MLT noise reduction on the linear image and then TGVdenoise on the non-linear.

Thanks again Shawn. I usually keep links to your processing tutorials for further reference. Regarding the comparison of the two DBE'd images, IMHO I think you need to compare them with the same stretch. The image on the right does indeed look flatter, but the centre of the galaxy on the left appears to have more contrast (dark areas are darker), suggesting the image on the left is stretched more, and if so, that would suggest it was actually flatter than the image on the right. That increased stretch could then result in the corners looking less flat than those of the image on the right, when they may well be flatter. What would be your thoughts Shawn?

Hey Ross! Thanks for watching. The stretch during and after DBE was the PI auto stretch. I had not done the manual stretch yet at that point. If I understand correctly the part of the video you are referring to. You could be right. I don't have an answer other than I usually try a couple or more variations with DBE to see visually what might work best. It can boil down to artist prerogative to some degree I guess. Cear skies!

Yes, that DBE didn't mess up things, look here:
