I will defend ESPN in this sense: nobody had any idea how much an out of conference loss would affect a teams playoff chances. They were ranked 22nd and it did look like the odds of them getting to the playoff had decreased significantly at that time. Hindsight is 20-20 but at the time the idea that a loss could knock you out of the playoff hadn’t been disproven because there had never been a playoff up to that point
