  • How to walk with a cane: nursing assistive devices demonstration and NCLEX review.
One of the things you'll want to know as a nurse is how to educate your patients on how to walk with a cane. Walking with a cane may seem like common sense, but there is a proper technique to doing it.
Before practicing or walking with a cane, it is important to use a gait belt for safety.
Make sure the patient is in the proper position so that the cane is 4 inches from the foot, and that they are holding the cane on the strong side of the body.
To ambulate with the cane, move the cane with the weak side. Then move the strong side forward.

Thank you. Just left the ER and they watched me walk, and use the cane wrong the entire time but never corrected me so I guess patients aren’t the only ones who didn’t know how to use one!
Also, who else is 30 and needs a cane 🙈

So thankful I found this video. I’m having problems with my leg and having to walk with a cane I wanted to make sure I was walking correctly. You were very precise and easy to understand and I appreciate that.

Thank you for a BRIEF yet perfect instructional video. I got my cane today, and as much as I don't want to use it, I've been falling a LOT, so I guess I have to tell my brain that crutches are no longer an option, I'm no longer in my 20's, I'll be 65 soon, I don't need anymore orthopedic surgeries.

Now this is handy. I have been on and off a cane for over a year now do to sciatica pain. It just recently shifted from the right side to the left and I decided it was time to see how use my cane properly. Well technically it's my mom's she got after her knee surgery but she wanted me to keep it in my truck since the pains come and go.

Same but for permanent damage to my hip and scoliosis. Glad to find someone else who doesn’t need a cane 24/7. Usually I feel kinda alone because most people use it 24/7 or most of the time 😅

Super duper easy to remember. Thank you nurse Sarah, such a simple instruction but sometimes confusing when written in the exam. This video really helps a lot. 💕

My kids just bought me one because I am stubborn, and I hate the way a cane looks for me. However, I do feel more stable walking with it 😊
