One Piece is actually the one series Ive cried the most too more then any other, and I'm a big military guy in his 30s. You haven't gotten to those parts yet, but Allen is definitely right about letting Philip and Mike experience those moments organically because there are a ton of emotional moments in the series that hit different for different people and however you react to those moments will be fine. That being said, those moments mixed with a bunch of other reasons makes this series truly special for me:)
@@senfnotmayo9004 yeah, the one part I always cry at doesn't seem to impact a lot of other people, but what most people say they cry at doesn't impact me, either😌
One Piece wouldn't be my favorite series of all time if it wasn't the series that made me cry the most and the hardest. Oda is a master of emotional contrast, he makes the joyous moments so high and the painful moments so low that sometimes I get hit by the joyous moments too. Definitely the only series I can think of to make me cry tears of joy and relief.
I'm not on booktube, so I was only familiar with Merphy, and I think it's the first time that I have so much fun listening to people I don't know, I laughed all throughout. You guy's personalities are fantastic, and I hope this series will continue on!
The dog Allen was thinking of when talking about inspiration for Chu Chu is known as Loyal Hachiko. Hachiko was a dog that belonged to a professor at Tokyo University. The professor would depart for work each day, leaving Shibuya on the morning train and returning on the afternoon train. Hachiko would go with his owner to the train station then return home until the afternoon, when he would go back to the station and meet his owner and escort him home. One day the professor died of a heart attack while on campus. His body was taken and cremated along with the clothes he was wearing at the time. The professor's family took in Hachiko and told the dog the professor was dead but the dog did not understand, of course. They could not show him the body or allow the dog to smell his clothes - signs of death dogs typically do understand. So Hachiko would escape from his new residence every afternoon and go to the train station. Eventually the family stopped trying to keep him and Hachiko wandered the neighborhood around the station with the local shops and residents feeding him out of pity. He still met the afternoon train until he, himself died nearly a decade later. One of the professor's students discovered Hachiko and included his story in a publication that made him famous, eventually turning Hachiko into a national symbol of loyalty. After his death, a statue was built in Shibuya Station to commemorate him. These days, if you're Japanese and meeting someone in Shibuya, just tell them you'll meet them by Hachiko. They'll know what you mean.
Thanks again for the stream Philip! This has quickly become one of my favorite formats on booktube, can't wait for you to delve further into the world of One Piece! And of course discuss it with these other madlads.
I always die laughing at the one piece livestreams. So much fun! 😂 Also Ussop is one one of my favourite characters in One Piece. I found his weakness and his desire to be a brave person really appealing right from the start. Especially with the reveal that the reason he was lying about pirates was because he was comforting his mom and hoping his dad would return one day. In syrup village I particularly love the ending where Usopp disbands his little crew with those 3 kids who look upto him because of his stories aka his lies and promises to tell a great story once he returns. That page alone really encapsulates a spirit of the story that is One Piece- going on a great adventure that will make a great story.

This is absolute fun chaos professor. Speaking about academics who review one piece. There is a channel called a The Drawk Shows and he got a playlist called Mom Piece. Where drawk's mom whose an English literature teacher. What makes these videos outstanding because her exceptional knowledge to reference eastern culture/folklore and western culture/folklore that Oda subtlety put in his craft. And her theory are absolutely mind blowing and chaotic even for veteran readers. So please, check her out and send them some love. And maybe you can invite her to this table and flex both of your knowledge and made Allen and Merph blown. Haha Peace
THANK YOU. I didn't think I'd see someone who watches her analysis. Her insights for each arc have been AMAZING and gives me greater appreciation for each arc that I've read
Like the Q&A sessions confirm, the marine soldier they hypnotized to think he'd captured Kuro was good old Morgan. The man whose entire identity and sense of self-worth was built on his success in the military never knew his greatest accomplishment was fake and he was just a patsy for someone else. That right there is the introduction to the wily ways of Oda's storytelling: it's a detail you barely notice, but it's there and informs a lot. This type of trickery is all around you. Be ever vigilant, you never know when Oda might bring back a character you only saw for a couple panels. Plot seeds sprinkled into the fertile soil of the series, growing for years, decades, sprouting into mighty trees on which grow the fruits of occasional careful planning and more frequent, extremely skilled ad libbing. Yeah, something like that. Onto Baratie, and magnificent moustaches! (if it isn't a spoiler to say that)
I didn’t catch that, and I have a feeling it’s one of many references and little nods that I’m missing, so thank you for mentioning it, Kalle! I enjoy that sort of intricacy in storytelling, so I’m buckling up for more!
Thank you for the fun stream guys. I love how each one of you has some difference and similarities in your opinions; and also each one of you wants to discuss different points and characters in the story. Also I love teasing Allen with "OMG stop spoiling Allen" Keep up the greatwork guys. I'm looking forward to your next discussions.
At 21:18, the localization discussion reminds me of R.F. Kuang's Babel. There is a section exploring how translation is an art, and how there is a balance between preserving denotation of words but also conveying the same tone and poeticism of the original text by modifying the words in the translation to better suit the new language.
It’s a real balancing act, and the further the translator leans to one side, the more that is lost on the other side. I find it fun to try to find a balance while translating.
I started one piece after watching the love action because merphy kept yelling at me in her channel. Best decision ever! I have never cried as much with anything. The amount of times ive loudly sobbed while reading is absurd. I took it slow until january but then i got to water seven which is the place everyone talks about and now in 2 monrhs ive read 300 chapters. It is so much fun too. I laughed at loud so many times specially in the first few sagas. So well written. Wonderful character development and world building. I love the crew so much. None of them are perfect, some of them id probably not go along with well irl but i love them. They are human. Imperfect. And I love their relationship. Ive also learned to enjoy Luffy more and more. In my opinion his spotlight disappeares for some time since we have a crew of people to focus on but lately ive been focusing on luffy and loving him so deeply. I wish merphy and allen are careful with what and how they say it because its so easy to spoil people. For me, even this whole IS BUGGY GOOD OR NOT is kinda of a spoiler because it gets obvious you will see him again while you dont know that just reading at your own pace. Just have fun. Actively try to forget things that sound like even mild spoilers and have fun because this is a hell of a fun and emocional ride. Also, dont want for tears. Places were i heard i would cry more i didnt because i was already expecting it. Let yourself live it! Not expect it before hand
These discussions are going to progressively more unhinged the further y’all get and I’m here for it. As an Usopp fan I gotta admit Allen be cracking me up with his consistently wrong opinions
I'm scared of Allen hurting himself badly by accident with those knifes, but then I remember: "Well, they wouldn't upload the video if something serious happened", and I'm back to track.
While I’m not a big One Piece fan, it’s still in my top 25 comics/manga that I have read. I’m happy to see that you are enjoying the manga and having a lively discussion. From my experience (friends and myself) it seems that people who enjoy fantasy series like Cosmere, Wheel of Time, and Malazan, or books by John Gwyn, Robin Hobb and recently Fonda Lee, enjoy the plot and writing of one piece. If you are in it for the long haul, I look forward to yours and later to Mike's reaction to some of the later arcs in the series.
Reasons Usopp is my favorite Strawhat: - Because he's the weakest, he's also in many ways the most human. Along with Nami, his reactions are understandable, and because he's more vulnerable than the others, it's more of a triumph when he manages to pull off a win - Relatedly, his way of fighting is more interesting than most - he doesn't just have more super strength or determination or overwhelming power; a good Usopp fight has lots of interesting stuff happen - I like characters to have something to contribute outside of fights, and Ussop is good at all kinds of stuff - he's an artist, inventor, storyteller - Between his strengths and weaknesses, he's the Strawhat I identify with most
I'm not sure if Phillip and Merphy noticed, but part of the inspiration for Zoro is Miyamoto Musashi (the same historical figure that inspired Vagabond).
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy If you love One Piece by this point its a good sign you will love it much more later on ! :) One Piece gets better no doubt ! :D
I'm with Allen on being fed up with the perpetualization of memes - for me, that kills the joke over time, or at least, in most cases it does anyways, if you really want to deep dive into themes and philosophy of the series, on the Drawk Shows review series, Mama Drawk (1 half of the channel) reads One Piece for the first time as well (she is much further ahead though, upper 600s~) and she dissects the series to a tremendous degree. And going by the comments under the arc review, I am not the only who is scared of just how observant she is with a lot of it - making observations from early on that many if not most make only on a reread. While the series is invinting through it's surface level joy, fun and adventure, and continues to stay very enjoyable up there, it's underlying themes and more subtle character characterwork are amazing.
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy another analysis channel that concerns themselves more with the artistic aspect of it, but really dangerous since it's primarily recent chapters, would be Werb! on a different note since I forgot in the initial comment, I also really love Asterix - as a kid back in the 90's I watched all the movies basically every time they were on TV, and reread the few comics I have even more often

@@GrapplingHookJones Ha ha! My feeling is that we readers need Usopp because, more than the powerful Straw Hats, he represents us in his vulnerability and fear.
Oda includes many puns and jokes in the manga, and some go unnoticed, and I think this is the most important, the name itself of ONE PIECE (ワンピース - Wanpīsu) which can be translated in several ways: It could be read as "一つなぎ", a more or less literal translation from Japanese that would mean "(in) one piece." It could be read as “人繋ぎ”, a phrase that would translate as “thread that unites all people.” It could be read as "hitotsu-nagi" or "一つ凪", a phrase that would mean something like "a peaceful sea" And i also see some fans translating as "the treasure that connects people", (My personal favorite, as it describes what the series does). Just so that you have "the title of the series" in your head later when you try to predict what the one piece is. And if you want to wet you eyes Philip, i am with Allen, the manga does not do it for me the majority of times but the anime does everytime, the first "one piece moment" for me its episode 30, its all chapter 68 of the manga animated (Baratie ending), so after you read chapter 68, I suggest you watch it at least to compare and find out why Allen talks so much about the anime, japanese version if you can, i think its on netflix.
Thanks so much for the information about the title, Seth! That's so cool to know about the multiple connotations, and I'll bear them in mind. I'm not much of a screen watcher, but let's see how I feel after finishing chapter 68 of the manga. All the best!
Man Im loving these streams so much seriously! I have seen a few One Piece Podcast but their dynamics are so... one dimensional? That I end closing the stream right away because there is no much to add to the discussion you know? Im not sure which words to use to describe them better. But here we got a mix of different opinions that makes things way more interesting to me than any other Podcast Ive seen in OP before, keep them going please!
Philip what a great stream. I had fun watching glad you liked Buggy. It’ll still take me a bit to get used to Allen but I don’t hate him. I do agree with Allen I think it’s his tone.
The longer I’ve known Allen, the more I’ve loved him. He’s a unique presence in our community and a joy for me to be around - especially when he pretends to be cranky! 😊
Luffy got his idea of what a pirate should be from Shanks. Who's a good guy who saves people. Luffy isn't complicated in his ambitions. He doesn’t care about what a pirate should be. He only cares about being free.
These discussions are always laugh riots, such a great ensemble. Also kaizolu fansubs for W. Deep dives makes these series more worthwhile to revisit, as it's deep themes often gets overlooked by its goofy exterior. Syrup Village arc is actually the prototype of many central themes of the series: 1.) How oppressive systems smothers you in false sense of security and kindness , but are actually driven by the ideas of total control . 2.) What piracy and freedom truly menas : kuro is a pirate who wants to be free from the burdens of piracy while luffy sees freedom and joy in it. 3.) Dreams and stories are the windows through which we make sense of our reality, here ussop lies and tell fantastical stories which gives light of hope and respite for kaya under kuro's oppressive system, and what eventually makes usopp brave enough to fight against fantastical odds(for him), it is through these stories and act of "lying" and dreaming that we keep hope burning(joy boy/one piece/ pirate king are in reality just stories and dreams) even through darkest times, because they may not be true but I can dream for it. Usopp story is a meta commentary on the importance of stories and dreams in our lives , our face lights up while reading one piece like how Kaya face lights up when usopp tells her his tall tales 4) the direct representation of the themes of inherited will : how the childrens come to fulfill the void usopp left in the daily lives of the villagers, as that is what usopp wanted that pirates are coming remain a fiction and lives of villagers remain unchanged, so his apprentices fill the vlid in the village usopp leaving have created. For more discussion I highly recommend watching the video: One piece's most forgotten villan, and why he matters : by T B Skyen (Actual. Analysis starts at 10 min 25 sec) This video contains minor spoilers for future arcs and hence I would recommend philiph or Mike to proceed with caution
Actually I wanted to include much more but then it would be a 10 page arc analysis, so I referred you to the video in the comment section that does that job spectacularly, I only briefly expanded upon those points in my comment that are not included in that particular analysis. I just hesitate becoz that video is much more suitable for veterans of one piece like merphy because of minor spoilers, as it causally explain the larger world of one piece(i.e, political power structure of one piece) to explain how syrup village arc relates to larger themes of one piece as a series. Even then I highly recommend you at least watch the "character design" and "glasses" subsection of that video, it is w/o any spoilers (nothing you will get w/o the correct context) and will aptly explain to you why this video is so highly recommend by me. @@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy

Just adding my 2 cents on the spoiler thing, while it is true that everything Allen mentions is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, I still like to experience to know as little as possible when i experience a story for example: If you knew of the Ents (tree people) before reading it would it ruin the story for you ? No, not by a long shot but what about the magic of discovering these facts for yourself, all those little things to me are what makes One Piece so special, so many strange and incredible things that you could never imagine unveiling themselves before you. I also know that many people bash him in the comments spoiler this spoiler that youre annoying etc and it must be incredibly frustrating for him so I understand how he can react. I still like you Allen and you're hilarious ( even though i sometimes roll my eyes at your antics), and I think you guys did a great job this episode at keeping it fun and simultaneously discuss everything there si to discuss, so I'm gonna be very satisfied if you guys keep this formula going for the rest of the series. Above all I'm glad you are enjoying One piece so much this early on and I'm really looking forward to continuing on this journey with you guys.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the balance of discussion and fun in this one! yk what i figured out why i love Allen yelling sm and being so argumentative 😭it reminds me of home and my family. yelling and arguing is a love language bc at the end of the way we are listening to each other and leave more educated than we were before by seeing a different perspective
It's actually refreshing to hear some negativity in One Piece content for once, even if I don't agree with 90% of it, and my favorite Usopp keeps catching strays.
I got back into one piece because of the first episode of this! Haven’t watched it since I was 14 and I’m 28 now! Plus, it’s so good to know that I wasn’t the only one who despised Usopp as a character haha I’ve disliked him since I was 14 I guess some stuff doesn’t change with age lol
I feel like we're heading in the wrong direction with Allen's habit of spoiling things. If we don't address it properly now, it could get worse down the line. I'm going to be a bit critical here, but it's only because I want to shield you from even more negativity when Allen inevitably blows up. I'll do my best to be respectful about it. There is a simple solution that Merphy and Mike are aware of: just avoid discussing future events! Talking about them doesn't have one positive contribution to the discussion but has a lot of negative aspects: -It constantly derails the conversation. Do we really want to spend our time each week listening to Allen's complaints about legitimate concerns? Simply respecting the audience's wishes would resolve multiple issues. There would be no complaints (from the whole spectrum of spoiler intolerance), and Allen wouldn't feel triggered by criticism. Everyone wins. -AlLenating you from conversation. Why even mention Buggy and his DF powers when you would learn about it the very next week anyway from the actual story? Why not exercise a little patience and bring it up at an opportune moment when you could actually have a discussion and respond to his opinion instead of making you feel isolated? It restricts back and forth only to Merphy and him. I find it inconsiderate and rude, and it takes away from the topic at hand. We are here for your journey as a new reader you should be the focus but instead you are being cut off from the discussion by a guest -And the biggest one - potentially spoiling. Speaking of Buggy, it IS a spoiler, and just because it didn't ruin the story doesn't mean it's acceptable or doesn't negatively affect the experience. A significant part of the arc relies on the mystery of his devil fruit ability. Zoro finding out he's a devil fruit eater at the beginning sets up the mystery and excitement of discovering what abilities exist in this world besides Luffy's. Misdirection with force choke makes you believe it's some sort of telekinesis so when Zoro cuts him into pieces you actually think he is done for a moment and then his crew starts laughing creepily. You shouldn't know what's going on here otherwise the whole creepy atmosphere and surprise from stabbing flying hand lose every intended effect. You lose that retroactive realization of what was actually happening with that "force choke" because you knew the whole time, for you it was never a mystery as the author clearly intended. Will this spoiler ruin the experience to the extent that you don't want to read anymore? Ofc not, but does that mean it's not a spoiler? According to Allen, it seems anything that's not a character death is not a spoiler and everything in between is fine. So we are all at the mercy of his definition of what a spoiler is and we are told we should just shut up and accept that going forward. It's ironic considering he said what he enjoys about the series is different devil fruit powers and yet he denied you of discovering them yourself by listing the next 5 in the first stream. Knowing some of them have a greater negative impact than knowing the chop-chop fruit, we can only hope you forgot about them. I hope this example illustrates how even a seemingly inconsequential Devil Fruit name drop can influence your perception, considering certain story elements are drawing upon your lack of knowledge. We'd much rather you form your own thoughts and opinions based on the authentic experience the author intended, rather than Allen's spoiler-influenced version of it. It's not something that should just be shrugged off by saying you're not sensitive to spoilers. When he said he is going to list all character deaths to spoil you out of spite, even though he said it jokingly, it's not beneath him and I wouldn't be surprised if he actually does it because he's already done something similar to Jimmy. On a stream right before Jimmy was entering the most anticipated arc in the series Allen spoiled him on who will join the crew next. There are two crewmembers whose joining is basically considered a plot twist and he was spoiled on one of them just because he considered it obvious (it's not). When the chat pointed out he was spoiling and right after Jimmy said he was lucky he didn't hear it, out of pure pettiness Allen repeated it knowing full well that Jimmy didn't want to hear it. I'm mentioning this just to highlight the kind of person we're dealing with here. Even if you explicitly tell him you consider something a spoiler, that won't stop him from spoiling you if it doesn't align with his simple rule of what a spoiler is. He will argue with you and try to make you look stupid for not thinking the same as him, instead of simply respecting other people's wishes. I'm afraid that downplaying and being disingenuous by claiming that people are only harping on Allen because of character names can backfire in the future. Overly accommodating will only enable his behavior even more. Merphy's been in the community long enough to know that even minor spoilers are a big no-no. She knows how much she was protected on her journey and I understand some fans go too far about it and it can be annoying but at the same time I think there is something wholesome about people wanting you to have an untainted first experience with the story they are passionate about, keep in mind it comes from a good place. It goes to show what a great friend Merphy is, deliberately doing something she knows doesn't bode well with the fandom, putting her back to protect a friend from criticism. While very noble, is it realistic to expect you can change the fandom's feelings regarding spoilers by making the fandom adapt to Allen's disregard for spoilers? We simply ask him to make that little compromise of not spoiling. He comes with a lot of extra baggage to adapt to and yet he can't grant us that one little concession. Let's remember that there are also people who are just starting their journey along with you. It's important to show consideration for them too. I've heard from two other TH-camrs who were waiting to start the read along with you guys, but knowing they'll be spoiled as well has made some of us less excited for their content. Maybe this will also help Allen understand that our concerns aren't about him personally or his tone. There's that one thing that none of us appreciate, but he has the power to change it. I do enjoy the fun Allen brings, he often cracks me up. However, it's hard to fully enjoy when he stats spoiling and argues with the negative feedback. Ok, I just set a new personal record for the longest comment ever, sorry about that 😅
It’s a long comment, for sure, but I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and feelings. I hope that our little crew will find its footing as we venture forward, and part of that is definitely a respectful relationship with the fans who are following along. Cheers!

Hey allen, some constructive criticism for you that you can ignore if you wish: By doing this as a live stream and not some private chat, presumably part of the goal is to entertain the viewers not just have a discussion among friends. And if thats true, what I'll say is that their preferences and yours over whats considered a spoiler aren't the only thing that matter. You don't know what parts of the story a random audience member is most looking forward to being revealed and reacted to. You are dampening the experience for the people that are yelling at you (perhaps to vigorously), if not for your friends who you know better.
You make an important point that one person’s interesting fact is another person’s spoiler. We all have different tolerance levels when it comes to spoilers, and different levels of sensitivity can make it hard to know what’s okay to discuss. I know I’ve mentioned things in videos before that someone has later called me out on as a spoiler. Thank you for your input!
To be fair to Allen, the anime's pacing wasn't the best but it starts getting bad after Loguetown though especially after Water 7 and then it gets worse with every new arc. @51:00 being a pirate means doing whatever you want despite rules. It can mean killing and pillaging just like it can mean simply not respecting marines
Buggy was successfully taking over a town until Luffy showed up. What was illogical about Buggy’s plan? The only thing illogical is Allen’s sense of obligation to yucking other’s yums.

I like that you all have a different views on the story but I will just say Ussop a great character because he is more relatable as he is just a weak coward with a sling shot going against people who are stronger than him constantly and Ussop has plenty of great moments. That being said one of you get to thriller bark you get introduced to the character that would become my current favorite and his name is Brook.
To defend Kuro against Merphy's terrible slander (...well, sort of), I think that his major flaw is actually that he hasn't got full control over his bloodthirst, and let it run away with him when he felt his plan was about to succeed. Which absolutelky was a mistake, but I think a mistake that rings true for the character? Also, I respect that Allen isn't into the themes and character deep dives as the rest of you, everyone enjoys things differently, but I'd really love to hear what those of you wo DO enjoy talking about those things think about them! I get Allen dislikes on Buggy and Usopp, also people exaggerating. Except powers, it feels like Allen preferes realistic traits on characters such as Nami care with money. But the siliness and humor are a major on the series which objectively makes Buggy legit in the world storytelling however that happens. Maybe no other character could fit there and it's nice how It's done. I would also say that if you hate how he's still there thats because its working which is amazing. Most hateful characters are so because of malice even if well crafted. He is hateful because he is not adequate which is very interesting.
Allen is like the average shonen fan who like edgy and cool characters but the things one piece mostly isn't that. It is less about the fights and much much more about the characters, the story, the emotions which now most of community forgets over the "agendas". That is mainly the reason so many people like Merphy's channel, beacause she cares for the theme and the character than just whether Zoro or Sanji is stronger. I don't think even Oda cares for that.

I’m excited to find out what makes this series so special for so many people - so I guess I’m on my own quest too!
Yea I just met someone who cried at the goldfish donut story but not the mushroom blue nose story. If you catch my drift ;)
@@WatanukiProductions ong I’m balling my eyes out every other epic moment or backstory in this series 😭

What a beautiful story! Thank you for taking the time to tell it!
That's a sad but beautiful story. Also not to be rude but when I saw the word "shibuya" I got flashbacks to Jjk because of the "Shibuya incident".
Thanks again for the stream Philip! This has quickly become one of my favorite formats on booktube, can't wait for you to delve further into the world of One Piece! And of course discuss it with these other madlads.

We specialize in riots! 😁 I’m excited for the next one too!
I always die laughing at the one piece livestreams. So much fun! 😂
Also Ussop is one one of my favourite characters in One Piece.
I'm looking forward to witnessing that One Piece spirit as I read through the series! Cheers!

Haha

Thank you for the tip! I will check that out!
glad to see another son of mama piece here

Thanks so much for participating in the stream! I had a blast, and I’m excited to continue in One Piece!
I think people don’t understand how translation works, and they’re using “localization “ to mean “translation I think is bad.”
Merphy is very persuasive, isn’t she? I’m going to enjoy getting to know these characters very much. Cheers!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy ok thank you, I'll look forward to your thoughts and discussions then!
Reasons Usopp is my favorite Strawhat:
- Because he's the weakest, he's also in many ways the most human. Along with Nami, his reactions are understandable, and because he's more vulnerable than the others, it's more of a triumph when he manages to pull off a win
- Relatedly, his way of fighting is more interesting than most - he doesn't just have more super strength or determination or overwhelming power; a good Usopp fight has lots of interesting stuff happen
- I like characters to have something to contribute outside of fights, and Ussop is good at all kinds of stuff - he's an artist, inventor, storyteller
- Between his strengths and weaknesses, he's the Strawhat I identify with most
I'm not sure if Phillip and Merphy noticed, but part of the inspiration for Zoro is Miyamoto Musashi (the same historical figure that inspired Vagabond).
How cool! Thank you for bringing that up!

I'm with Allen on being fed up with the perpetualization of memes - for me, that kills the joke over time, or at least, in most cases it does
anyways, if you really want to deep dive into themes and philosophy of the series, on the Drawk Shows review series, Mama Drawk (1 half of the channel) reads One Piece for the first time as well (she is much further ahead though, upper 600s~) and she dissects the series to a tremendous degree.
A few commenters have mentioned Drawk, and the channel seems well worth checking out. I’m looking forward to encountering those themes!

The Usopp slander is real in this one, lol
@@GrapplingHookJones Ha ha! My feeling is that we readers need Usopp because, more than the powerful Straw Hats, he represents us in his vulnerability and fear.
Oda includes many puns and jokes in the manga, and some go unnoticed, and I think this is the most important, the name itself of ONE PIECE (ワンピース - Wanpīsu) which can be translated in several ways:
It could be read as "一つなぎ", a more or less literal translation from Japanese that would mean "(in) one piece."
It could be read as “人繋ぎ”, a phrase that would translate as “thread that unites all people.”
It could be read as "hitotsu-nagi" or "一つ凪", a phrase that would mean something like "a peaceful sea"
And i also see some fans translating as "the treasure that connects people", (My personal favorite, as it describes what the series does).

Syrup Village arc is actually the prototype of many central themes of the series:
1.) How oppressive systems smothers you in false sense of security and kindness , but are actually driven by the ideas of total control .
Usopp story is a meta commentary on the importance of stories and dreams in our lives , our face lights up while reading one piece like how Kaya face lights up when usopp tells her his tall tales
4) the direct representation of the themes of inherited will : how the childrens come to fulfill the void usopp left in the daily lives of the villagers, as that is what usopp wanted that pirates are coming remain a fiction and lives of villagers remain unchanged, so his apprentices fill the vlid in the village usopp leaving have created.

I love these comments! Especially the one about Usopp’s “lies” being a commentary on the function and importance of storytelling. Thank you!

Welcome back!
Talking about them doesn't have one positive contribution to the discussion but has a lot of negative aspects:
-It constantly derails the conversation.
We are here for your journey as a new reader you should be the focus but instead you are being cut off from the discussion by a guest
-And the biggest one - potentially spoiling.
Cheers!
One Piece is your religion
Kuro's problem was that he is addicted to complexity and showing off how clever he is by making really, really complicated plans that are hard to pull off.
Allen is my spirit animal
He’s an inspiration!
This was so refreshing! I can't wait for the next stream 🤣😂😆😄 xD
8 minutes in and merphy facepalms so hard haha
Ha ha! It was another lively conversation!
Woooo!! Is this Barto’s club !!
I really love this kind of videos!❤
Buggy is definitely leading this 😂
Have they scheduled part 3 of this?
@@Mark_Goddin Alas, the discussion series has been discontinued. However, I continue to read and review One Piece on my own, and I have future discussions lined up. Cheers!
Philip highly recommend watching blue eyed samurai, one of the best written series on netflix in last 10 years.
P.S: you should consider inviting famous one piece youtubers like artur or Tekking101 for important arcs.
I hear great things about Blue Eyed Samurai! It would be great to check out other One Piece videos - thank you for the tip!
was the new episode taken down? i seen it when it was live but cant find it anywhere
I think it’s been taken down.
I swear to god I’m gonna make a channel one of these days, it’s my goal to meet these people and talk to them on a somewhat regular basis.
Go for it!
You are dampening the experience for the people that are yelling at you (perhaps to vigorously), if not for your friends who you know better.
well he is fun to watch for sure. And i guess that's what matters at the end?
Usopp is the best, cant wait till I catch up to date with videos, i hope to see u all the truth about Ussop
Did they stop doing this discussions? I cant seem to find the next vid
@@javierredondo1144 Unfortunately, we did stop. I’m continuing on my own, though!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy yeah i have watch all of your one piece analisys, just hopping there would be some extra!
Buggy was successfully taking over a town until Luffy showed up. What was illogical about Buggy’s plan? The only thing illogical is Allen’s sense of obligation to yucking other’s yums.
Where is the next part?
We discontinued the discussion series after there were some disagreements in the comments. I’m continuing One Piece on my own and having separate discussions with Merphy, Allen, Mike, and others. Thank you for watching!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy thank you.
10:00 actually the Dark Tower series is based on the Robert Browning poem To the Dark Tower Childe Roland Came.
Edit: i should wait 10 seconds before commenting
Ha ha! The number of allusions in the Dark Tower series is astounding. I love the Tolkien ones. Cheers!
The actual dog was Hachiko and he was waiting at a train station.
These conversations should be rebranded “Foolishness, and Memery”
And yes, I wrote this using voice to text and yes, it added that comma, and yes, I’m going to keep it, and yes, I think you should write it exactly that way.
Ha ha! Sounds good!
@@trevortorbeck2910 I just finished Thriller Bark, and I enjoyed Brook’s backstory so much!
I’m an Allen apologist, he always makes me laugh intentionally or no
There should be a club called the Allen Apologist Alliance, or AAA. 😁
It is possible to choose usopp as someone's favorite character 😂
To defend Kuro against Merphy's terrible slander (...well, sort of), I think that his major flaw is actually that he hasn't got full control over his bloodthirst, and let it run away with him when he felt his plan was about to succeed. Which absolutelky was a mistake, but I think a mistake that rings true for the character?
Also, I respect that Allen isn't into the themes and character deep dives as the rest of you, everyone enjoys things differently, but I'd really love to hear what those of you wo DO enjoy talking about those things think about them! It's my favourite thing about One Piece, so I'm a little selfish about it, lol.
Ha ha! I agree with your point about Kuro - classic villain arrogance to start “celebrating” too early. Cheers!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasySelf indulgent like a real cat, maybe? XD (And it's not that I don't enjoy the chaos Allen brings and his terrible (hilarious) takes, I just want more of the analysis too.) By the way, I think that Zoro is absolutely partly inspired by Zorro (despite that Zorro uses a SABLE, not a rapier, take that, Allen). I would say I've read that this is true, but now I can't find the source. But I will keep looking.
@@desolateleng9943 Another commenter also mentioned the Zorro connection and seemed certain there was some inspiration there. I’ll do a little research too.
44:00 merphy is hilarious 😂😆😂😂😂😂😂
Isn't Asterisk the gaul the village based in France? I swear the shape of the country illustrated at the beginning is France
Yes, but the author Hergé is Belgian
When is the next stream
Not a stream, but I’ll be releasing a video most likely on Tuesday about my thoughts on the East Blue Saga!

Oda clearly likes Buggy as well as a lot of his characters, but his favorite character is actually Luffy. He's said so in quite a few interviews.
JUST OVER FOUR MINUTES IN YOU GUYS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Too much fun!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy ah damn okay, fair enough. my only gripe was allen not adding much and being loud but i enjoyed the different perspectives
One Piece fans and chill are 2 things that don't mesh well together lmao. Can't wait to see how this journey goes, hope yall enjoy it a ton since it's still my favorite manga and will probably never be topped for me
Thank you for the positive wishes and good vibes!
If you are reading this Allen you are a cool guy
I totally agree! 😊
I look forward to those themes!
The real spoilers are character that don't die.
RIP Seymour
