    Works better on a grill, not a closed surface. Allows more airflow from underneath. Usually ready in less than 10 minutes. I'm using natural charcoal.

      Yes, when using this Chimney these days I have a different firepit for camping that has a small grill under, and this lights a lot quicker. As you say, less than 10 minutes.

    Thanks for the tutorial. With paper properly loaded and dry charcoal, the little chimney can be grey inside 15 min. About 20 for the larger. I've used these for years and love them. Hey kids, DO try this at home... and you'll never use lighter fluid again. :-)

    I put a little vegetable oil (or some other cooking oil) on the paper before balling it up and stuffing it underneath. It burns longer which ensures the coals are lit. Works everytime

    I just cut the top and bottom from a gallon ketchup can, fill with charcoal on the grill ( I use kingsford), raise can so bottom is about an inch from the grill, douse with lighter fluid, light at the bottom of the can with a long reach lighter. Works great. Use some pliers to remove can when charcoal is white.

    I learned to twist the paper in to a roll, and make a circle around inside the chimney. Leaving the center more or less open for the air to get through. And some cooking oil on it does help.

    • @equijano
      @equijano 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First, stick an empty cardboard tube (think toilet paper roll or paper towel roll) in the center of the starter chimney and fill up with coal in the chimney around the tube. The cardboard burns up quickly and leaves a perfect space in the middle for that updraft. Game changer!

    I prefer a couple weber charcoal lighter cubes under the chimney starter as the rolled up newspaper can be hard to light,its also smokey and small bits of burned newspaper go everywhere,with the Weber lighter cubes,you simply put them under it,light them and its job done.

      I’ve been cooking a long time and haven’t noticed a difference but my smoker gets hotter, quicker when I don’t use the chimney. It works well for long cooks for me. It just comes down to preference. My opinion is after many years of using one it’s less of a hassle to me not dealing with one. But, like I said it’s what you feel comfortable with but those cubes are great. I’ve seen people using 3 but 1 works fine with me even if I use the chimney.

    Actually, there's a sweet spot between using too much paper and not enough. My experience is that if you use too little it goes out before the charcoal takes over, and if you use too much it doesn't allow enough air to flow through the charcoal thereby accelerating the burn.

    Others have already mentioned about allowing airflow underneath .a trick I use if I don't have a grill grate or other open bottom source is a decent size stick usually does th trick.. fill ur starter with coal to add weight and place a stick underneath th front when placing it down.. this will allow just enough airflow and u can stuff it with as much paper u want and a flat surface won't choke ur fire out.. or if ur creative.. place a few briquettes along the edge of th bottom or even 1 in front like a stick... th world is ur oyster. Lol.. keep on keepin awwn

  • @schaeferkt
    @schaeferkt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is doing it the hard way to light, and long heat up way. 1. Take 4 tightly wadded sheets of newspaper. Place them in the bottom, spaced to leave a heat channel up the middle of the 4 wads. With the paper still side up, you then easily light the paper in the center. Once it just starts burning, put the chimney right side in your BBQ, and fill with charcoal. Your coals will be ready in 20 min.

  • @michaelzoran
    @michaelzoran 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    QUESTION: The amount of charcoal that you dumped out of the Charcoal Chimney Starter is about 30% of what the grill is capable of containing. The same thing happened to me. It ended up not being enough charcoal. Do you believe this is enough charcoal? Or should a person be using two of these Charcoal Chimney starters?
    Also, how long was your charcoal hot? ... Mine was very hot for about five minutes. It remained warm for another five minutes after that. By fifteen minutes, there was only one small section with heat. I was actually very disappointed with the Chimney Starter from Weber, because it took 45 minutes to heat up, and then the Kingsford charcoal didn't last long - presumably because it spent so much time in the Weber Chimney Starter.

    • @fuzzykeuh
      @fuzzykeuh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need 2 chimney starters. It takes about 20 or 30min to start them. If it takes longer you didnt put enough heat initially. Spread them across the area you want coals to be, and if the area is not covered (coals touching eachother) then just add more fresh ones. They will all ignite from the prepared ones. Personally i never fill the whole area with coles, i like to have a cooler zone to prevent burning your meat but still cook it more

    • @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk
      @GetoutwiththekidsCoUk  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dan Harris No not yet unfortunately. I found a lot less paper is required, and sometimes a gentle blow underneath. If there is too much of a breeze the paper does burn through a bit too quick and I've had to add some more fuel underneath. A lot of the coals in the middle will get hot, and when I see the top ones starting to turn underneath, I empty out. They could be left in the chimney to get hotter, but I found that there's enough warm coals to start. I then add fresh coals, which eventually turn white as well. So 10 minutes is not enough to have a full set of hot white coals, but enough to get them started.

      Mike Brown the only real issues I've seen is too much paper, not enough air movement around it or too much air and it burns out too quick. I've been using them for years and love it. You also need real paper not those coated ads that feel slicks and are shiny. The guy in the video had was too much. Depending on the size around 1 to two complete newspaper pages loosely crumpled

    Yeah, way to much paper. Less is actually better to get flame, more air! Plus you can drizzle a bit of cooking oil on the paper as well. I will get one of these. Thanks for the video mate!!

      Interesting. We sometimes blow into the bottom where the paper is to get the flames going, but not used a leaf blower. Mind you, we usually use this when camping, so might not always have a leaf blower with us ;-)

    You only need one piece of paper to help kick off the fire.

  • @SooperFlye
    @SooperFlye 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, since you own a Weber's Chimney Starter, then you'll get a kick out of Weber's Lighter Cubes. Dump the newspaper & all that smoke. Lighter cubes are NON-toxic, NO fumes, NO smoke and NO bad after taste in your food.

    • @FortunaFortesJuvat
      @FortunaFortesJuvat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SooperFlye With the lighter cubes, I can get a full, large chimney of lump charcoal (pure hardwood instead of charcoal dust held together with glue, cornstarch, borax, sawdust and coal dust like Kingsford briquettes) going in 10 or so minutes.

    There was way too much paper. No air could get through. What is that grill? It is poshest, most suburban grill I have ever seen. Getting advice from someone who has obviously never done this before was not a great idea.

    I see no purpose on this ... 45 minutes to set the fire is no advantage.. even 10 minutes is not a real advantage agains't regular way + blowing a bit.

      Disagree! Takes me about 15
      this method. Without it is more work and time. I know people that use a blower or fan, no thanks. I usually light it up and walk away (yes, I remain insight) to work on my salsa, meat, etc) :)
