This is legitimately one of the coolest games I've ever played. Idea wise, at least. A Hybrid Heaven tribute game would be goty

....You really didn't know how to make use of timing your attacks to the power gauge at the top.... Unfortunately, this isn't the kinda game you can button mash attacks....

I loved this game! Combat was so cool. Loved doing neck throw, then keep doing back suplex on enemies until they are dead. So sad there was never a successor or sequel to Hybrid Heaven.

I wanted to reach out and say the first time I watched this game was while you playing on twitch, and that same date I finally proposed to my now fiancé. I truly believe that the only reason that she said yes was due to how we had both watched this incredible content and were in such high spirits over your incredible gameplay. Then, today, I watched this again, I had been holding down a flu for the last couple of days, and woke up horribly, but I rather smartly thought to have this play in the background. After it completed, I felt rejuvenated. Suddenly I realized. I have to keep this video saved and if anything comes up, I will immediately watch this again for all the glory it gives me. Thank you for your amazing work.

Arguably a top 5 game for N64. A modern remake would be insane

So, I played an absurd amount of this game as a kid. There's a few things that can really help with playing this game. But, since not everyone wants to be spoiled or anything similar, I'll put them further down.
Alright, so, the most important thing is keeping in mind this game works on a rhythm. Every enemy has it's own pattern. Like the lizard guy who kept trying to grab DP. Every enemy type has a different fighting style. So, different evasive moves work better on different enemies. I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of what enemy does what, but this game doesn't lend itself to speed running.
This game is all about watching your opponent's movements and deciding how best to counter or attack as the need arises. Also, yes, this game has the Quest 64 system. The more you use a move, the better it and the limb it uses gets. The more a limb is hit, the more defense it gets.
Kicks work legs, punches work arms. There are moves like the Piledriver that can put your enemy on the ground for a while, and that's where you use moves like Backbreaker or Boston Crab, which appear to improve torso strength. If you use a limb too much, it gets damaged for a time. It seems to be a measure to prevent the spamming of a single move. Though it did seem to happen most after hitting a guarding enemy too many times, so that could be it as well.
There are undoubtedly people out there who could give much better advice, but this really is a trial and error type of game. They even put respawning enemies near some save points to encourage that style of play. Personally, I'd suggest using low kicks to damage enemy legs and slow them, so you can pull off grapples and such easier.
For the Agent enemies, you want to stay close, because they have ranged attacks that are hard, possibly impossible, to evade with any defensive move.

All of this, plus 1 other thing
Up until around mid game and even at points after that, especially with new enemy types, it is almost infinitely better to take a hit on you’re guard as opposed to stepping out of its range because it’s by taking the hit, on guard or otherwise, that you are then able to learn the move being used on you. Once you’ve learned the moves of a particular enemy or you feel you have a comfortable mix of them, that is when you’d best make use of step and reversal/counter.

You know you're playing N64 when you can't control the game because the camera won't act right. Fun to see this game again, I was a huge fan back in the day.

Well, they did manage to cram Resident Evil 2's A & B scenarios on a single cartridge. Sound quality is really all you lose. Actually amazed Konami never ported this to PSX.
