      A hole or not a hole is two options.
      Two possible places that may or may not have a hole is 4 options.
      3 -> 8 possible combinations

Just wanted to say this was a really fun episode to write, and Simon's reaction to the fake twist in the middle of the script was absolutely priceless. • @jonschreiners5006
    @jonschreiners5006 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +340

    Here’s the math on that locking mechanism in the beginning for you Simon:
    Each of the 32 positions can be holes or not holes (2 possibilities), all independent from each other.
    For the first one, there are 2 possible combinations (hole or not hole). With 2 positions, it rises to 4 possible combinations. With 3 positions, it rises to 8 possible combinations.
    Each added position raises the number of possible combinations by a power of 2. So the total number of possible combinations with 32 positions is 2^32.
    Or just under 4.3 billion. You’re welcome have a nice day!

      Used to work the desk at two separate places. Man, people get weird when they've been drinking (Them: "we *hic* visited all sixteen wineries!" Me: I can tell...). Had one hotel fill up at a college graduation and just before my shift ended a large family group all came to check in...except one room had been cancelled because the rest of the family said the couple in that room couldn't come. When the couple tried to check in of course the room was taken. They called their graduate, the graduate called the hotel and went on an absolutely vicious rant that left me in tears. The hotel manager called the cops to get the family to settle down and I went home and had a stiff drink. Next day I found out that the family had been hoping the couple with the cancelled room wouldn't show up due to a family feud. I quit a few weeks later!

    Ive worked at both of the hotels in this story. I always felt the mob must be involved. A handful of the hotels built during the time had mobs involved in their construction. Several have pillars that they used to inflate cement pricing. The president has those pillars. Plus KC police was taken over by the mob to the extent that the state eventually took over control of our police department. KCMO to this day does not have control of our own police department. The only city in America where this is the case.
    Another fun fact that Ive never heard come up in retellings of the story, no one knows which room this would be now. The hotel wad vacant for a long time and almost torn down before it was purchased by the current owners. They renovated the rooms and took it down to about half of the original rooms so they would be big enough to accommodate modern travelers. Id never heard he asked for a courtyard view. That does narrow down the possibilities a lot.

    12:05 The reason the combination count is that big is because each hole has 2 possibilities, and you get the total # of combinations by multiplying the number of possibilities for each hole with each other. So multiplying 2 together 32 times (i.e. 2^32) gives you that 4b figure.

    I'm sure someone's already explained the whole "twin cities" thing, but there are lots of cities in the US (and probably other countries) that are separates by a river and/or state border but are basically the same city. People be settling along rivers, then governments be using those rivers as borders. Some examples that are well-known to me, a lifelong midwesterner, are Fargo ND and Moorhead MN, Duluth MN and Superior WI, St. Paul and Minneapolis MN, Omaha NE and Council Bluffs IA, and many, many more. These cities are literally right next to each other and are sometimes referred to interchangeably.

    Around 54:00 there is a question about what a "Carriage Return" is. Programmers know it until today because the Windows line breaks are often written as
    (return)
    (new line). It is also known as ASCII CRLF (13+10, 0x0D0A, Carriage Return + Line Feed). So the first sign puts the input place back to the leftmost position and the next sign moves it a line down. I do love the little "bing" typewriters made, when you reached the rightmost sign space.

    I stayed at a really expensive hotel a few weeks ago with my husband - it was a gift from his Boss last Christmas and we’d only just got around to using it. It’s in Wales and the Welsh Rugby Team stay there as their home base when the international’s are on. Anyway we were staying in one of their downstairs suites that overlooks the golf course and had its own terrace etc. We were given our keycards and vague directions and sent on our way (we only had a small pull-along suitcase and carry-on bag) with no porter. It took us AGES to find the bloody room 😂😂😂 ! The suites are a separate section that you go downstairs and underneath reception to get too - it’s VERY weird. Don’t get me wrong it was beautiful but getting to it after a couple of bottles of wine at the evening meal proved just as complex as the first time - my husband and I were laughing loudly down the corridors trying to find ANYTHING that stood out, I kept leading us in the wrong direction, it was funny but ridiculous 😂😂 I would definitely recommend it if you’re ever in Wales, especially if the weather is nice and you can make use of the private terrace - we however stayed there in gale force winds and sleet as it was the beginning of December !! It’s called The Vale Resort and the suites are lovely, as is the food at The Grill Restaurant.

I have heard of this case, but the fantastic details you gave! The mob was BIG in KC (there’s a famous story of a shootout with police, when members tried to take their prisoner)…stayed in a hotel in which they had blown up and framed. My guess has always mob-related, somehow. I doubt we will ever know. Thanks for your stories, humor, and solid research!

    France has some of the best ‘cheap’ hotels in Europe. You can get a room AND BREAKFAST for around 100€ a night and although the rooms are small they’re always extremely clean and comfortable. They’re usually an Ibis etc and people actually look down on them, but for an overnight stay on your way to the South they’re perfect and the breakfast is always fresh with plenty of coffee, tea and fresh juice.

    Simon, $100 a night hotels in the west are super basic. But in Thailand, $100 a night can get you a 600 sqft resort suite with a Jacuzzi tub big enough for 8 people, your own private pool, and only 5 minutes walk from the beach. Just so you know 😂

      my sister was staying in a hostel for the equivalent of like $4, it was just a big, hot room with a bunch of college aged ppl... she then realized that if she doubled that, shed get her _own_ closet-sized room _and_ an AC! for abt $8!!

    Kansas City is two incorporated cities because it straddles the border between the states of Kansas and Missouri. At the border you can literally be in two states at once if you have a foot in each state. Although Four Corners has this beat with the ability to be in four states (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) at once. I did this when I visited the Four Corners Monument as a kid.

    1:07:03 I love how people can talk about how they would get away with murder, you would think it would get you put on a list somewhere, but it's just fun to contemplate how you might do better at not getting caught than other killers who did get caught. IDK why its fun, its almost like a puzzle, like it's very hard to beat the police, much like its hard to complete a rubix cube and we want to figure out how to solve it.

    Simon, your first tangent of the day is exactly on point. The idea is that right now, technology and medical science are moving so fast that life lengthening technology will reach a state where advancements are happening faster than it would take for you to age the amount of time they are extending your life by.

Anyways, I got a cheaper version of that Galaxy projector, and I am very much regretting it now that I’ve heard this ad read. Keep in mind how you worded that question to the AI. You need to set additional parameters, such as how many holes total are used on each card. They may have decided they want six holes used on each card. Or 5, or 8, or go halfway up to 16. That will limit the number of combos. Furthermore, the order of numbers doesn't matter. Meaning a card punched for 23451 and 51234 will read the same in a punch card reader. Slots 1,2,3,4, and 5 are read either way. That also severely limits the number of available combinations. Or, you could just do 1's and 0's and start numbering sequentially in binary. (I wouldn't recommend that though.)

    The hard thing to understand about this case is why the victim didn’t speak up to finger his killer or to save his own life. He was somehow complicit in his own death.

      If the mafia was involved they could’ve threatened him that if he speaks up they would target his surviving families. Or if the murderer was connected to his lover(s) he might not want to get them in trouble.
