Courtney, this show was the brainchild of Myron Rosander, a legendary designer who worked mostly for the Santa Clara Vanguard, but had retired due to health issues. The director of the Phantom Regiment had once been the director of the Santa Clara Vanguard and knew Myron well. Myron decided to come out of retirement for one year to put this show together. It is an intensely emotional portrayal of the journey of life, and a somewhat autobiographical creation by a man who knew he was probably going to die within a matter of years from his disease. The soloist is a spirit guide for the newborn child (hence the tunnel entrance). The white uniforms of the corps represent the soul that becomes the new person. The guard can be understood to represent angels, excited by the call into life of this soul, accompanying the person during the journey of life. The drill moves from the bottom left to the upper right, a lifelong ascendancy toward Heaven. The corps' laying down is the sleep of old age, and the final fanfare is the realization and reflection of a life lived well and full, with the symbol of the Phantom Regiment representing that arrowhead pointed to Heaven (this ties together all the archery motifs seen in the body motion throughout the show). The final exit into the tunnel (a reference to the tunnel of light experience so often cited in near death experiences) leaves the spirit guide on the field calling the audience to join in the journey of life, and the final chords emanating from the tunnel is a call from the soul affirming that the journey is worth the reward of the next step in the journey, the afterlife.

Whoa this contextualizes the show so well! This is so cool, thanks for sharing :)
I knew Myron had some health issues but I had no idea about the rest of it. No wonder I get so many goosebumps from this show!
This has been my favorite show for a while and this just made me love it even more
Ok, damn, why did you have to tell me this. I'm not cryin'--YOU'RE cryin'!
wow
Sheesh. I love art
This show has such meaning. I drive for Phantom since 2012... this show? Was the brain child of a designer who has sadly passed on...and EVERYONE who was involved in this show still chokes up talking about this year... This show is so under appreciated. Passion. Power. Beauty. I love this show so much. Thanks for doing this. I am so lucky to be a part of not only Phantom since 2012...but drum corps since 1982...
It’s truly my favorite Phantom show❤️
Phantom’s drumline this year was god-like. They won best percussion in 6th place.
“Thanks Guys!!!!”
Those Rennick lines are almost always beasts.
I love when that happens.
The Corp ended up in 5th overall
Sorry, by front ensemble won that award. Listen to the tapes.
I never clicked on a video so quickly. This show is an emotional rollercoaster.
Fr 2010-2014 and 2016 too
Sandi Rennick’s arrangement is other worldly
Best front ensemble designer of all time honestly. No one has mastered all of the textures the keyboards provide quite like her.
Saw this show at finals in person, and I have to say, this one really gets captured pretty thoroughly in the video. This, to me, is one of the few shows that 'wears well' - I can watch it time and time again, and it never gets old. And if you listen carefully (like, with good headphones), you can just feel the intricacy of the music - horns, battery, and that pit! Whoa. It's like I seem to understand what they're trying to convey a little better with each viewing. Truly an amazing show and story, from beginning to end. They literally tell a life story in 11 minutes! THIS - This is where I want Phantom to be, don't care where they place (except that I want them to be in finals!). Bravo!
This show had to be one of the most magical experiences to ever happen on the field. 11 years later and it still packs an emotional punch
God I miss this Phantom Regiment, absolutely gorgeous
They should be coming back a little bit because JD Shaw has returned after several excellent years at Santa Clara. It's a shame the Rennicks didn't join him, though.
@@samrovito3694 can’t win ‘em all 🤷🏾♂️
I was at finals this year as I was teaching an open class corps. I saw this performance live and I cried... balled my eyes out.
drum break by Phantom Regiment on that year really2 crisp and beast..
2 DCI reacts in ONE DAY!? Yaaay! 🙂☺️
That final chord from the tunnel (or heaven depending on your view) sends me over the edge. Such a nicer ending for the angel in gold than in 2008 ! Phantoms most beautiful show😇
I found this show brought out some strange emotions I didnt know existed in me personally. I found it wonderful, and for some reason, sad, at the same time. Never experienced those emotions in conflict before. That folks is the mark of a show well worth the time to watch.
You're feeling the heart and soul of the Phantom Regiment.
Oh Courtney, we could be besties after this video! My two favorite corps are Phantom Regiment and Carolina Crown for many of the same reasons that you like them.
Phantom caught my heart when I saw my first DCI show, which just so happened to be the DCI finals in 1996 (where they tied for first). Each corps has their own identity as you've learned, but what I appreciate about Phantom is their respect for a certain amount of decorum and their repertoire choices. They often pick a lot more classical, orchestral pieces and composers. They also pick a lot of Russian composers which complements what used to be their all-black uniforms. A lot of classical Russian composers had darker, more somber themes than the typical American style at the time which included a lot of fanfare.
If Carolina Crown is the bombastic entrance then Phantom Regiment is the funeral dirge. Perhaps less optimism, but more reflection. The story of the end is just as the story of a beginning. I have great respect for both corps and they still remain my two favorite.
Fun fact: At 12:04 their formation is a chevron, which is the emblem for Phantom Regiment. They don't often make this formation, so it's exciting to see when they do.
This was the first dci show to make me cry. It's been my favorite for years now. I was introduced to The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms through this show and its still my favorite piece of music to this day.
Courtney really needs an over-the-ear headphone sponsor. There is no way a pair of chorded apple earbuds are doing any of these DCI videos any justice. How do we make this happen?!
Absolutely right. The full impact is much better with a full headphone.
This was an absolutely beautiful show. So classy from start to finish. (Phantom Regiment class of 1973 .... I'm getting old).
First time watching this show and I’m in tears. Such a beautiful and emotional show🥲
I saw this show in person at the old Georgia Dome and remember crying a good bit and was an emotional wreck afterward lol! It’s still one of the few shows that have that much of an emotional response from me. The only other ones that come to mind at the moment is 2014 Blue Knights, 2016 SCV, 2003 Phantom, and 2007 Phantom.
At 12:04 they made their logo which is a chevron. To me that was one of the most powerful hits in the show.
I've been waiting for months for your reaction. This show inspired me to audition for the activity and one of a handful of DCI shows to make me cry.
A visual, applying show to watch that I highly recommend. The Cavaliers 2006 - Machine.
2022 you should attend Thursday-Saturday prelims, semi finals and finals world championships in Indianapolis.
I'd drop dead after a minute of drumming like that
SAME LOL
@@CourtneyCoulston Provided I didn’t fall over from the weight of the gear
Ooh I’ve been looking forward to this one
This has always been my favorite show, I got to see it live in the Georgia Dome for the dci super regionals. They didn't win that day, but that show won my heart.
Idc how out of tune the mellos were in the opener, that shit packed some emotion 💀😖
The show made me cry. I saw it as the journey through life. From start to finish!
I've watched this show for YEARS and get emotional every. time.
For a good number of years, the Regiment had their Summer practice at the university I then worked at. My apartment was about five miles away.
One random evening I was just hanging out on my balcony. It was one of those quiet nights you get in the summer... I couldn't even hear the highway nearby.
And then as I stood there, quietly but perfectly audible came the music of this show.
From five miles away. I can't tell you how it happened, or what freak of atmospheric conditions played a part, I can only say it hasn't happened before or since. My next door neighbor came out onto her balcony and said hi... to which I said "sssssssh... listen!"
After it ended she asked me what the heck that was... she was new to the area and had never heard of the Regiment.
In a movie, we'd go see them perform, fall in love and get married, all to the music of "Into the Light." Nah, life isnt a movie... but she became a fan of Phantom Regiment, so that's good too.
This is one of my top most underrated shows in DCI. The beauty of this show is unmatched.
The only DCI show to this day that has made me cry like a baby. The first time I saw them running out of the tunnel at the end I just completely lost it and I can't even explain why. It seems like I'm not the only one who has been rendered speechless after watching it. It's just absolutely transcendent.
I cried so hard watching it live at DCI Atlanta. It's one of my 5 all-time favorite shows.
I am a die-hard Phantom Regiment fan, and when I first saw this show in 2010 I was crying like a baby too! The emotions it brought out of me was so unexpected. To this day it still makes me tear up.❤
I really had a chance to listen to the battery, I was blown away on how much the bass line was doubling the snare line, so well executed and the snare line and tenors almost sounded like a single section. High drums was well deserved. The Corps members put their hearts and souls into this performance and it radiates out to the audience so intensely that 11 years later we are all still having an emotional reaction watching Phantom relay this story we all experience, Life
Phantom, yes! Just an hour west of me in Rockford, Illinois!
This an absolutely beautiful show.
Drums kick ass!
OMG FINALLY INTO THE LIGHT 😭❤️
Still waiting for 1989 Phantom Regiment. 😄
This is one of my top favorites of all time. Even though I'm 💚S❤C💚V❤ drumline at heart, I don't think there's been a time where I didn't tear up from watching this show. It was performed so well and thank you for everyone who marched that year, it really touch my heart. Thanks again 🥰
Yay more phantom! I'm auditioning for them this season :)
That's awesome!!, what caption are you auditioning for?.
@@ramosjaime11 Brass - Euphonium :)
@@iandoepp6323 I'm so jealous lol! I can't wait to see Harmonic Journey on the field again!
@@randallsego2940 yeah I saw the show announcement and I decided I at least had to try haha
@@iandoepp6323 I also play euphonium. 👌😎
She should definitely watch Crown 2017. Personally I'm wondering if she'll recognize the hammer drop she already heard, but in general 2017 is such a good show that doesn't get the love it deserves I feel
I’ve been waiting for this video FOREVER! Finally!!!
I would also like to add. This show was born and died in 12 min. They come in from the one tunnel and leave through the other. So in so to speak. They were born into the light and left into the light. Which is to me an analogy of life. Even though this was a totally original piece of music. My favorite show of the that year. Thousands of hours of practice. That is why it's good.
The music is The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms by Michael Kaman. It is his masterpiece based on the ancient Pueblo culture who observed the movements of the sun, moon, and stars. It is a very emotional piece.
your reaction always warms. welcome to the marching arts love. not speaking on everone. but i think for me your welcome with open arms. its nice to have people outside the activity that can still see the hard work and beauty that goes behind a DCI or WGI.... please please do more reactions of WGI. i live for youuuuuuu
I think the most underrated PR show. By far the most sophisticated 6th place finish in the history of DCI.
Please please please pleeeease do Phantom Regiment 2013. It's my favorite show as it was the first one I saw live and they actually rehearsed at my school.
Such a beautiful show. Really love it.
Was this the last show for the lead female guard member? I believe I first saw her when she was part of PR's 08 Spartacus.
I love this show so much.
I've been waiting for you to react to this!
I have to say that one of the coolest displays of athleticism comes at around 3:30. Just watch that part on a loop and see how far and fast these guys are running without missing a single note.
The quad feature... duuuuuddddeeee she talked over the scrapes. I’m FUMING
the tunnel opener, 9:12 to 9:36 ,and of the course the phantom kickstand at 12:12. Chills.
Cadets 2005 "The Zone." I feel that you would enjoy that one too.
Would love to see you do a reaction to 2011 Blue Devils “Cabaret Voltaire.” That was truly a unique show!
Gordon literally the realest MVP
It was far past due and yes.
I saw this in person it was amazing
hey courtney another good reaction vid of this Phantom Regiment 2010 - Into The Light :) I like how they throw those things into the air & catch it without haveing it fall down that takes alot of practice & skill to do that I can juggle like 3 tennis balls with my hands & not drop it :) I like seeing u smile on ur reaction vids courtney :) keep up these good vids I love u courtney
yessss!! So great right?? must be soooo much practice!! Thanks for tuning in Joel!!! Lots of love!!! ❤️😊❤️
@@CourtneyCoulston Yesss it's very great!! :D & ur welcome courtney anytime!!
I marched DCI ... trust me... it is crazy... basically it's massive repetition. You do it until you can do it with your eyes closed. NOT KIDDING.
Tell me why I just saw this show for the first time today and was gonna recommend it to her 😌
Super video! I applauded for $10.00 👏👏👏
Here’s a high school that played from the same selection of music! th-cam.com/video/1DgUcoznTYY/w-d-xo.html this is a texas band that pulled it off
Very solid show.
(Love the lack of prop-litter marring the field.)
Just a quick correction, phantom regiment placed 6th that year.
Hands down, this was the most beautiful thing on the field in 2010. I've long tried to figure out why this show didn't place higher. The only thing I can point to is that the latter half of the show is a bit clunky in terms of design, particularly relative to the opener, which is on the short list of the best openers Phantom has ever put on the field.
This ended up being the Rennicks' swan song with Phantom, as they would leave after 2010 for Vanguard. One year later, Vanguard then poached JD Shaw, Phantom's longtime brass arranger.
I just watched this video for the first time 2 weeks ago. Yet again you've hacked into my history lol
This is amazing
Why would anyone dislike this ? Ayayay biter people.
Eeee I heard a trumpet crack, stills awesome tho
Love the tuba intro❤️
It's euphs and tubas for the first few bars
Best drumline since 93 Star of Indiana, and I'm not sure there has been a better one since.
I think the 2015 - 2018 lines for SCV are all contenders as well.
@@sireislas3903 hard to argue. Rennick is just pumping out great line after great line
I've heard several drumline guys say scv 2019 might be the cleanest of all time, maybe the most musical too, though not necessarily playing the best book of all time
@@bobthecob8501 As a drumline guy, I would have to respectful disagree with that statement.
@@bobthecob8501 they were excellent that's for sure
Courtney, Phantom actually only placed sixth this year, if you can believe it. Definitely one of my favorite shows from that year. Also, the audio and video are out of sync in this video you viewed, unfortunately. Kind of ruins it for me. :(
9:36...cool
This show was incredible. Too bad the intonation wasn’t there in the brass. Still an extremely emotional show!
So when you gonna react to Cadets 2000 and 2005? lol
YES great choices
Boston Crusaders 2018???
Look up the Ohio State Buckeyes "The Best Damn Band in the Land" Awesome as well
Lol cmon folks! We gonna sit back and let all the phantom and cavies people take this channel over? Let’s see some champions! Bring on the blue devils!!!!
They are champions too. Love BD. They are my favorite but this haven't been hitting even though they've won. Now if she do some 90s BD.. im all in.
@@burdrchitect1680 just sayin there’s better shows out there than the “scraps” we’re getting from leftover phantom and cavies shows lol. I love me some phantom too but bd peeps gotta step up her
@@cbenson196 Gotcha. She does have BD shows on her Channel. I believe they were one of the first corps she reviewed when she started.
@@burdrchitect1680 lol I know 😃 been following since the first one. Just making a joke that we devils fans gotta stop being cheap and request some videos here lol
@@cbenson196 True. True. Shsssh..I kinda been on the Crown Bandwagon. I remember when they had a local DCI come into my town and I didn't see BD in the lineup.. didnt care to go...lol. but I eventually went to others wo them there. CROWN first blew me away in 07.. my heart literally jumped during a big impact while watching them practice.
Hey courteney you should react to Blue devil 2018 dream and nighthawks you are gonna love it 👍👍👍👍
Please react to Blue devil 2011 show 👍👍👍👍

I don't even care about this specific reaction. Not my type of thing. Didn't even watch. I commented for the algorithm, and because Courtney smiled. I'm a complete sucker for her smile. Go ahead. Call me a simp. 🤷🏾
Drum line was better
