Olivia Coleman as Miss Haversham is perfect casting. I can see her totally rocking the part, and I look forward to watching her play it. I love Dickens, and I love this book, so it should be delicious entertainment. :)
Does anyone else realize Miss Havishsam’s headpiece is like Turandot in the opera? If you read the text of In Questa Reggia you will see a strong parallel in the characters!
I stayed watching because of Olivia Coleman. She is remarkable. A vicious edgy take on Havisham that works for me. I do not think dropping f bombs makes this interpretation new and modern. It is utterly unnecessary.
So far this is shaping up to be a good old period drama and I can’t understand the purists who moan that some of the dialogue is ‘too modern’ , ‘oh it’s not truly Dickensian’ It’s atmospheric, and edgy, and that’ll do for me
Why bother trying to compete with the masterly (and timeless) David Lean film? There seems to be a penchant for remaking hugely successful products in the entertainment media world these days.
The Brits have a weird taste in entertainment. Mind you, I am Indian, so I don't think I have a right to pass a judgement given how weird most of our films are. 😂😂😂😂
@@paddymeboy the David Lean film is certainly the best, but because of the time limits of a film some crucial characters of the book had to be be dropped.
Am I the only one who isn't a fan of Olivia Coleman? She never changes character. Always the same in every role. I find her tone of voice and never changing accent boring. Overrated methinks.
I liked her in Tyrannosaur. She played a role with a lot of heavy emotion in that movie. I Haven't really seen her in much else though to give a proper opinion.
Bloody hell. They have done it again with another history .Why on earth is their a Black actress in the part.!? Again will not be watching as rewriting history to suit. Change and not tell history as was.
NGL, I'm kinda bored of Olivia Colman. I just think that no matter how good someone is at acting or singing etc. there is such a thing as "god they're in everything" and it starts to work against them. Not to mention its kinda stealing jobs at some point.
@@tracys169 Well, she's cast because its a classic role for 'older' female actors because roles dry-up pretty fast over 30. Havisham is just one of those roles all 'older women' play as standard, like how every male actor has his Hamlet or something.
Here goes the woke BS. She's stesaling sobody else's job? What absolute crap. So she's just supposed to not act anymore? Stay mad. Just say you're jealous and go. It's pathetic. If you dont want to watch it, why are you here? You wokers want every damn thing all the time. Entitled much? cry more.
“I want to watch you play” sent a shiver through my whole body!
Perfect note to end the first episode on!
Olivia Coleman nails every role she's given, it's amazing.
YES. She does. Every line delivered with power and intent.
Olivia Colman in this clip is mesmerising. Her every nuance is delivered - and captured, in a magical way.

The Sounddesign in this scene is sooo good!

The BBC Great Expectations has violated Dickens
Why do you think that?

Ooooo I'm looking forwards to this. Seems like they're doing the vibe justice.
What happened to the BBC ? They used to be able to make these costume dramas effortlessly. Now they don't even look period at all.
By the Dickens. He wrote characters that many actors have relished to play.
Anne Bancroft in an updated movie in this role will always be my favorite. She was just so authentic.
Gillian Anderson's interpretation will remain unbeatable!
Coleman's got her own take on it. There's room for both
Not a competition. We don't always have to compete people against each other
How did she get mixed up in this utter tripe...?
So far this is shaping up to be a good old period drama and I can’t understand the purists who moan that some of the dialogue is ‘too modern’ , ‘oh it’s not truly Dickensian’

Look at paintings of the time.Their are black women being used as objects of desire. Which made this in my mind more devious.
I'd like to see Helen Mirren take on this role she did a better version of the Queen than Olivia Coleman.

I saw this show advertised on hulu.
❤❤❤ can’t wait!

With all respect to all involved but this isn't a patch on Gillian Anderson's much more captivating take.
Marticia Hunt and Joan Hickson were even better.
Not to mention the umpteen other versions - the classic David Lean film is the best.

Just the thing to watch if you like race swapping dumpster fires
Why did they use a poundland magwich, Tom hardy, Ray Winston were made for this role. Hard to stay with this totally botched series..
This Pip is way too old for the part

Yeah... I don't remember seeing anything like this in The Crown or The Favourite. Maybe I wasn't watching closely enough.
I liked her in Tyrannosaur. She played a role with a lot of heavy emotion in that movie. I Haven't really seen her in much else though to give a proper opinion.
It's you. You talentless jealous swine.
Ehh that’s just ur opinion and ur entitled to it.
I’ve seen most things she has been in and this, at least in my view and memory, is new.
Bad casting for estella, also why are they doing another adaptation of this? This must be the 50th by the BBC what a waste
Bloody hell. They have done it again with another history .Why on earth is their a Black actress in the part.!? Again will not be watching as rewriting history to suit. Change and not tell history as was.
History? Great Expectations is a work of fiction.....
Gosh.
This isn't really how her character is described, its a good performance and all but diesnt feel like Miss Havisham. Why mess with the classics?
Don't bother 😢

However, I "get" why she's cast. Not only that she's a great actor, she also draws some viewers in. I actually was interested b/c she's in it LOL

This is after Mark jilted her
Not pretty
👁️
Pips accent... London inner city scooter boy!
Right?!😂
