Mate I am so sad to find out you've stopped uploading. Your videos are so amazing, wish you did more PS1/PS2 content. Tons of great JRPGS back then like Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon (which I'm happy to see you covered), Vagrant Story, Wild Arms, Star Ocean etc
I've read through many analysis of these games before, but this series of videos was the most clear and clean cut I've seen. Thank you for all the work you put into them!
Dude, I'm brazilian and I loved your Chrono series videos. I wanted to show them to my lil sis but she doesn't speak english yet, so I had the idea of translating your Chrono videos to portuguese. What do you say? I don't know if it's too toilsome for you to add them (never done it, donno how it works), but I''d be glad to do the translation per se. Let me know :)
Man I really liked the vid. I was born in 88 and I loved these games back then. And honestly hearing the game music now it tugs at my heart terribly reminding me of being young and my mom being around playing it with me.
Also born in 88. I remember I ran outside where my brother was mowing the lawn and was jumping up and down bragging I'd just beat the game I'd spent hours and hours on. Wayyyy before you could look up how to do shit in games lol
The funny thing is that most of this is only subtly mentioned in the games pretty easy to follow story. However, if you choose to connect the dots, may God have mercy on your soul.
I am returning to the game after a ten year break (seriously) and trying o piece this all together has been a nightmare so much. I would've been better off just starting again.
I have seen a lot of Square soft game analysis videos in my day and this is by far the best. Also they should have hired you, as the explanation you gave is gold in itself.
I come back and watch these videos every few months just because they’re so damn good. After watching the first one a few years ago it inspired me to write a module for D&D based around time travel, so thanks for the inspiration! I hope you’re doing alright and if you ever want to come back and make some more videos you’ve got plenty of folks waiting to watch them.
An excellent video. A perfect refresher for me I haven't played CT in a long time. It's amazing that the game has such a huge story even before the game starts.
Coming in 2022 to say that you became a legendary TH-camr. Your videos serves as inspiration to many others that created Works from your Vision, congratulations friend, I'm from Brazil and even here you are know and respected. I Lost The count of How many times I listened to this timeline series, thank you!
There was no mention of the Entity. Supposedly, the Entity is the planet itself or nature of the planet itself wanting to save it from it's fate. So it saves the Gurus from Lavos in the original Zeal timeline and then it selects Crono as it's hero. Then the entity takes you on a tour, as if it was it's life flashing before it's eyes before it dies. It sends you to 600 AD first, so you come to understand time travel and banishes Nadia despite Leene still being alive. Then it sends you to the future to see what happens. Then you head back to Magus summoning Lavos in 600 AD, then the entity intervenes and sends you back to the prehistoric era and Magus to Zeal. Then, after witnessing the coming of Lavos, the entity creates the gate to Zeal and the tragedy that befell it. Once it comes full circle, Crono dies as the tour the entity planned for us is over. Inevitability was the theme. Almost nothing you did in your journey changed anything. Frog probably would have saved Leene, The future would have stayed hopeless, the Reptites still would have died to Lavos, Zeal still would have fallen, and after your journey, the Black Omen now exists. But, because you saw what happened and because the Gurus were saved, you have the ability to change the future and via all the mini quests you fix a lot of problems in the world, bring back Crono, and gain the power to smash the Black Omen and defeat Lavos. In the ending, it is mentioned that the entity is at rest, now that Lavos is defeated. I never played Chrono Cross.
The Frozen Flame is the Entity. At 3:45 or so, the speaker mentions that the Frozen Flame is almost like a "Note Taker" of sorts for Lavos. And since Lavos's purpose isn't to destroy life force but to absorb it and then breed, it is also absorbing the energy and memories of the humans on earth. It needs to do this to create its progeny. When they say that the entity is at rest after Lavos is defeated, that is really just a figure of speech. In 1999, irrespective of whether Lavos is dead or not, the Frozen Flame doesn't have to take anymore notes from the life on earth. You are right in saying that the things you do don't really change anything. This is even true when Lavos is killed, as it already bred and its progeny is still on death peak. In fact, when you go back to all the points in time to change things, it messes up EVERYTHING, and that is explained in Chrono Cross.
That is a good theory. But I agree with Scott a little bit more. And also it is hinted that the "entity" might actually be the player, not just the planet. It's a great concept.
I never played Chrono Cross, so the frozen flame means nothing to me, as that was likely retconned into the story later and I look at Chrono Trigger as a stand alone game. The Chrono Compendium is where I got this idea regarding the entity, where they looked at the Japanese translation where Gasper mentions, during the Fated Hour, that this a battle of the planet versus Lavos. The entity could be the player, but the player wasn't involved in banishing the gurus or creating the time gates in the exact order they appear. The planet or nature itself was having flash backs to the rough times in it's life to show Crono and friends what was going on, after first getting him used to time travel in 600 AD early on. And when Crono dies, the tour is over, Lavos wins, but luckily, the entity moved the Gurus around so they could get you the Chrono Trigger, the Epoch, The Rainbow Sword, Prism Helms, and Magus as a teammate and after being able to change a few things in history during the fated hour, you can get geared up and kill Lavos.
I like the theory that Schala's spirit (or whatever) was the entity, working through her pendant, opening the gate that sparked everything. It was her last ditch effort to avert the destruction of the world, and, miraculously, it worked.
The frozen flame is supposedly a part of lavos, the magical power of which spurred on human sapience and emotion, which really doesnt make sense considering the prehistory humans were already quite emotional and well developed before Lavos touched the planet. There was mention of a 'red rock' that did the same thing but it wasn't elaborated on. Kinda ruins the whole 'triumph over a world-ending parasite' thing Trigger was going for when the whole reason they existed was because of Lavos to begin with.
Pretty late comment but I always come back to these Chrono Trigger explanations and walkthroughs. This was THE game I always played and enjoyed. The story, the characters and the MUSIC. The music is great for each part of time you're in or what ever zone you're. The music was top notch and very memorable. Nice video dude 👍
Man, I'm extremely excited that finally someone on TH-cam has decided to make videos on the subject of te chrono series' story and lore. Chrono Cross is my favorite game of all time (a shame that it's so underrated), Chrono Trigger follows. Chrono Cross' story is very complex and profound, which is why I love it so much. I'll be watching your videos for sure. You got yourself a happy new subscriber!!!
You got it wrong Melchior wasnt banished in the original time line. He was banished for reasons when Magus/Janus came back and accused him of being a traitor as the wizard. In the original time line Melchior was there when they summoned Lavos where all 3 wise men plus Janus were sent in different time periods. I’m surprised no one have said anything about it this whole time.
One of the best chrono videos out there doing things in this order is perfect and essential for fully understanding not just the ramifications of the the player actions but the overall story arc kudos thank you Have played this game many times yet still find new ways to see it
Randomly came across your channel, first video I saw was the Chrono Cross one, and wow. One of the greatest explanations I've ever seen. I used to dismiss Chrono Cross' story until I saw it, I'm surprised that your videos don't have more views, keep it up dude!
I just finished my first playthrough of Chrono Trigger and someone linked this video to me in the comments. I really enjoyed watching this! It helped clear up some of the timeline questions that I had, and it got me pretty curious about Chrono Cross as well.
Great Video! I like how you start telling the story from the beginning, not just from Crono's perspective. However, i'd like to point out a small oversight at 5:27, where you explain that Melchior creates the Ruby knife and is banished to Mt. Woe. This does NOT happen in the Lavos timeline, since Melchior is seen with the other Gurus during Lavos' awakening in Magus' recollection of Events. The reason why Melchior is banned during Crono timeline is because of the Prophet meddling with time before Crono and company arrives, otherwise there would be no reason for Melchior to actually be sent to 1000 A.D where he meets the group trying to reforge the Masamune.
+Caio Rodrigues Wouldn't that mean that Magus doesn't die when he summons Lavos in 600, but is sent back to 12,000? If the Prophet was always present, then it would be a causality problem and Crono had no effect on that event(Magus just gets his butt kicked into a time tunnel). Also, did the Ocean Palace rise only because of the Sword in the Machine? And if Melchior is banished to Mt. Woe, how was he in the Ocean Palace to be sent to the future? (Maybe the Queen was gloating)
+Levot Hyroxin Actually, Crono DID have effect on that event. In the original 600 AD, Magus dies trying to summon Lavos and is never sent to the past. It's because Crono interfered with the summoning that a portal was created sending Magus to the dark ages. The Prophet is not present in the original timeline and you can confirm that with Magus' flashback, where only Magus, the three Gurus, Schala and the Queen were present during Lavos' awakening. In dialogue during Zeal, you can see that the Prophet appeared recently and said the Gurus were not to be trusted. Which also means that Melchior was never banished to Mt. Woe in a timeline without his presence. The Ocean Palace didn't rise in the original timeline because, for some unknown reason, Queen Zeal was incapacitated before that (Schala probably used her powers to escape with her, instead of saving the party) .
I'm so glad I found your video. This hit all the best nostalgia without any of the frustrations of actually running the game from scratch... and now to run the game from scratch :)
I've played this game over 10 times easily. And chrono cross a good 5 times. Really appreciate your vids man. Unfortunately I don't think my heart will ever accept cross as a sequel but really great videos lol.
Is it wrong that I've been watching this... ever since I've played and beaten Chrono Trigger on Nintendo DS. I don't know why but I just do. This is well done.
@@criznittle968 Depend which timeline he his. He's born as Janus. Renamed as Magus in 600 A.D then as The Prophet back in -12,000 B.C. Thereafter; Magil or Gil in Radical Dreamers and with the ending on CT-DS + the letter from Lucca; Luccia gave to Kid about his brother who could be around watching over her sister. Which is Guile. At 1st the devs was planing to give him Magus background but they let it be and forgot the project. But, 2 hints point toward him. Edit : Janus is like Mithrandir or Gandalf. He have different names. Well done, Terracorrupt0, beat this series decades ago and you've explained it very well, the art direction in Cross confused me a bit, glad that Chrono & co. had a cameo in it. The second installment was all over the place with such a huge roster! Enjoyed the hell out of Your retrospectives!
+Terracorrupt0 13:58-14:14 What part of the game is that? I don't remember ever seeing this scene in the game anywhere. Is it a scene in one of the endings? It's been a while since I did some of these endings and I don't remember a couple of theme very well.
Hey, I would like to thank you for making these videos and putting together these explanations. The Chrono series is probably my favorite, and brings back a lot of childhood memories. I have played through Chrono Trigger on every platform it has been re-released with, and played Chrono Cross many times, but never really 'got' the story until this explained it to me. It is so complicated, I think it's difficult for anyone to get what's really going on just by playing the games.
Im already half way through this video and I gotta say, this is awesome. Chrono Trigger has a huge nostalgia value for me. Never got to play Chrono Cross but I think I will before giving the next video a view. Thank your for your time and effort in this video.
You should link the Chrono Compendium articles you referenced for further reading :P Great video though, I know most people never had the patience to read all of those articles (though I personally read them multiple times back in the day!)
This video was so Awesome! Can you please make a Terranigma Explained!!! It's one of my favorite childhood games of all time and want to know and understand more about the story. It has very deep meanings and wish there was more about it on TH-cam.
This is one of the best videos I have watched. I have played both games many times and there was so much I never known. I think it might be time to replay the Legends😊🤯
Thank you for this video! It's good to recap the events of CT. I'm currently replaying CC and just reached disc 2. After completing it I will watch the rest of this series.
I love you for this. Chrono Trigger is my favorite rpg since childhood! Excellent perspective and emphasis on reviving Chrono even though it was technically a sidequest lol
Yo, these videos are AWESOME. absolutely fantastic and I can't praise you enough. Keep making these! I watched the xenogears one today and my mind was blown how little I actually understood when I played through that game. Thanks for enlightening me and keep it up, this is one of my favorite types of TH-cam videos so thanks for making them!
isn't it kind of bad if you need a video to explain to you what the hell happened in a video game? shouldnt the video game do a good job of that itself
Omfg man... this is such a great video!!!! I wish it was longer! lol. I wanna hear all the stuff about the side-quests and such. That was really enjoyable.
I have a whole host of Chrono Trigger headcanons that take place in an alternate universe from Chrono Cross's timeline. It's all about how Magus found Schala, and who actually created the gates and how Queen Zeal changed personality.
I was wondering why this doesnt have a ton of view. Give a couple months and it will! great analysis and explanation. I havent played chrono cross, but this makes me want to!
I really enjoy these videos and I hope that you come back and post more. One thing I had always wondered about the original Lavos timeline (before Crono and them time travel) why no one apparently tried to stop Lavos except Magus. Surely people would have discovered him over the years.
Only the mystics knew that he was summoning lavos, and they hated humans and wanted him to do it, so the humans never found out from them. Magus only knew about lavos because he saw it as a child. Lavos is also probably miles and miles underground until he emerges. There's no way of even telling he's there
awesome video. the music alone was worth it. Best music of any game ever (although there are some close ones in other square games). Best JRPG ever! Best video game of all time?
The circumstances which we began this year with plus the blessedly rigorous attention and effort for the video and previous one makes me ‘LOL xD’ on the inside when I try to imagine ,hypothetically someone like ‘TerminalMontage’ trying to do ‘Something about..’ videos on ‘Trigger’ and ‘Cross’ by the time this year ends
man these are interesting, love these old games and thought I had figured out a lot of stuff but seems there's always something new to learn about them.
There's a few arguable things in this video concerning the time lines, the red stone/frozen flame debate, time gates etc etc but this video is well put together from 6 years ago. Definitely a good video to catch the gist of the story. I'd like to point out that Lavos never had temporal powers to create time gates in Trigger (though Cross retcons this with the Chronopolis event but that could have been the combined power of Schala aka Dream/Time Devourer), so Lavos couldn't have sent the gurus through time. 17:18 of this video, the really brief cut of the forest scene, is the only event in Trigger where this theory is explored however. Otherwise, you never see Lavos utilize or create gates.
I've never played any part of the Chrono series, but the lore behind it (and the time travel) makes me wish I have. The game's special effects and the way it is rendered in Chrono Trigger reminds me of Zoids Legacy/Saga II.
If Guardia was founded 1000 years ago, with the Millenial Fair in 1000 AD. The Kingdom was actually founded in 1 BC. (As there is no Year 0; 1 AD came after 1 BC)
Thanks for the explanation. I am gamers from Indonesia and i remember played that game at my precious psone, and honestly this is the best game i've ever played. How very lucky i am... 😢😢😭
technically dream devourer route is the true ending that follows up in chrono cross, damn i love these two games and it was genius to combine both games stories.
Schala was sent to the darkness beyond time by Lavos during Zeals destruction but Lavos was actually sent to the darkness beyond time after he was defeated by Crono and the gang. So essentially you trap Schala in a realm with lavos until she is driven insane by defeating it, which feeds into more of the themes that the entire journey in Chrono Trigger ended up ruining things further in Chrono Cross.
Seriously dude, DO NOT worry about your videos running long, we could watch this for hours.
yes. yes we could.
I could talk videogames for ages.
I agree man even im at work im like this should be 2 hours LOl very noicely explain.
I'm at home and its almost 4am and I think it can go longer
Im pretty sure thats editor for 'I dont wanna work on this longer than I have to.'

+Terracorrupt0 13:58-14:14 What part of the game is that? I don't remember ever seeing this scene in the game anywhere. Is it a scene in one of the endings? It's been a while since I did some of these endings and I don't remember a couple of theme very well.
Thank you for these videos. The Chrono series is my favourite of all time. Bless you!
I knew most of the timeline already but this helps people who don't, this series might be my favorite video game series of all time.
You should link the Chrono Compendium articles you referenced for further reading :P
Great video though, I know most people never had the patience to read all of those articles (though I personally read them multiple times back in the day!)
This was a lovely analysis of the timeline! Love it, keep up the good work! ^^
Impressive. I can't wait for part 2 and 3. Found the vid on r/gaming keep posting updates
This video was so Awesome! Can you please make a Terranigma Explained!!! It's one of my favorite childhood games of all time and want to know and understand more about the story. It has very deep meanings and wish there was more about it on TH-cam.
+thishadowithin I've got it on the list 😊
goddamit I cant see crono vs lavos without getting teary eyed
Dude great job. Very well put and your voice is easy to follow. My favorite game of all time and now I understand it more because of you.
This is one of the best videos I have watched. I have played both games many times and there was so much I never known. I think it might be time to replay the Legends😊🤯
Your explanation is masterful in both of your chrono videos. You would make a great teacher.
Thank you for this video! It's good to recap the events of CT. I'm currently replaying CC and just reached disc 2. After completing it I will watch the rest of this series.
Same here!
Now I'm dying to complete it as fast as possible so I can watch the video lol!
Marco Batta
Oh wow, I completed Chrono Cross several months ago and forgot to follow up on the rest of this series. Thanks for the reminder mate!
lol No problem :P
Great video, I finally watched it, haha couldnt resist.
I played the game 19210239 million times anyway!
Queen Zeal survives (and is freed of Lavos's control). Gaspar at least says so if you ask him after defeating her.
Glad that this type of content is desired, I appreciate your kind words
isn't it kind of bad if you need a video to explain to you what the hell happened in a video game? shouldnt the video game do a good job of that itself
Omfg man... this is such a great video!!!! I wish it was longer! lol. I wanna hear all the stuff about the side-quests and such. That was really enjoyable.
I’d love to see a full timeline merger of both. You have quite a good grasp of how the game works
Dude your explanation is superb , i never understood this series this much ! thank you!! your videos are so amazing don't stop!
Good stuff, man! Very extensive and informative.
***** Thanks dude, hoping to see some more Chrono stuff from you in the future :D
Seriously, these videos of yours are mythic: you always have to come back and watch them from time to time.
Hey do you understand who was at the ending? I mean baby with the pendant is that a marle or Shcala?
@@МатвейГоловин-л2п That was a clone of Schala named Kid👍
I have a whole host of Chrono Trigger headcanons that take place in an alternate universe from Chrono Cross's timeline. It's all about how Magus found Schala, and who actually created the gates and how Queen Zeal changed personality.
Amazing job on this
Loved it! Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.
Jim Barnes Thank you sir, Part 2 should be even more confusing :D
thanks so much dude! I was really confused with the story in my first playthrough
Yeah, Chrono Trigger is really a "hold all questions until the end" type of game. You just kinda roll with it.
The Dream Stone is, in fact, the Frozen Flame
Holy fuk yo, just watching this vid gave me goosebumps. Chrono Trigger and Cross had such an amazing ost
I was wondering why this doesnt have a ton of view. Give a couple months and it will! great analysis and explanation. I havent played chrono cross, but this makes me want to!
That's the dream anyway, thanks for your support
i love this game, but i did not expect that it has a very complex story line, thanks for this video!
This was amazing! Cannot wait to watch part two. So many things I did not know at all.
Honestly, would love a longer analysis from you, this was perfect!
Best youtube video of the last 15 years.
You just got a new subscriber by doing this, thanks a lot for taking your time on this!
Amazingly done, I really liked the content's details and editing. Very well featured. :)
Thank you 😊
you made a lot of things brighter to me in this video (and i ended chrono trigger for the first time 10 y ago)
Excellent summary. I needed a refresher, and this was perfect.
This explains so much. I absolutely loved this game.
thanks for this. you explain it very well. could watch this for hours. I've played only a bit of Chrono Trigger and a bit of Cross.
I love this series (both the Chrono series and this TH-cam series), it's wonderful!
Everyone needs to play (emulate) Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes
I've never played such a brilliantly beautiful and elegant sequel
a very satisfying sequel...
Why doesn't this have more views?? This is great!!
I have done a playthrough of this game on my channel and this right here, was amazing! I love it!
Great work!
+Juggalo972 Plays Good stuff, keep it up!
Terracorrupt Thank you good sir! :)
Game on!!!!!
Awesome video, bro, good job! Gonna watch Part 2 now.
nice video! after YEARS of playing the game. i understand it a lot more!
man these are interesting, love these old games and thought I had figured out a lot of stuff but seems there's always something new to learn about them.
Lucca really just pick up a baby from the forest
BOOM! You did it again man, right outta the park! GREAT JOB! Sheesh, how long does it take you to create these videos on average?
Nice video. I don't think I've ever seen one that lists the events chronologically.
I've never played any part of the Chrono series, but the lore behind it (and the time travel) makes me wish I have. The game's special effects and the way it is rendered in Chrono Trigger reminds me of Zoids Legacy/Saga II.
This was mind blowing. Thank you for this!
This is just great! You really did a good job!
So nice, i'm watching them now, so probably i'll ask about certain events in the 3rd video, nice work
If Guardia was founded 1000 years ago, with the Millenial Fair in 1000 AD. The Kingdom was actually founded in 1 BC. (As there is no Year 0; 1 AD came after 1 BC)
Dude I want that poster in the very beginning of this video showing all the chars. Of chrono trigger...
I played both games but too busy leveling up and never really understood the story that deep :|
Big thanks to you mate.
Excellent video!!! Great presentation of a straightforward summary
Fantastic job, gonna subscribe when I get home!
Thanks for the explanation. I am gamers from Indonesia and i remember played that game at my precious psone, and honestly this is the best game i've ever played. How very lucky i am... 😢😢😭
Great video and could've made it much longer. I played Chrono trigger dozens of times but never got to play Chrono Cross
technically dream devourer route is the true ending that follows up in chrono cross, damn i love these two games and it was genius to combine both games stories.
What an amazing video. Thank you for making it.
Out of all the games I've played in the past 10 years chrono trigger is still the king
