This might be my favorite video you’ve ever made. Ben giving reviews of tomatoes, eating food straight out of the garden and making me look at my wild August garden in a completely different way. Today’s video was a salve for my soul 💛
While it is unlikely that the Mayflower brought any Devon to Plymouth, they arrived soon thereafter in 1623 aboard the ship Charity: one bull and three heifers, the first American Devons.11 Not much has been recorded about this period in American Devon history between 1623 and 1800. I was thinking name her Charity. That's the name of the ship that the first Devons came to America, the new world in 1623.
I like Olive as a name for the calf, because when you said “first fruits” it reminded me of how long olive trees have been around and how we still enjoy their benefits today!
When we’d go back to the farm in Eastern NC where my father grew up and walk the fields, he would pick up a melon and throw it down to crack it open. These were huge melons, Charleston Greys, or something like that. We would eat the heart out of them. Decades ago. Lost in the mists of time. You reminded me of that. Thank you.
That tour was so much fun with you and Will and Ben eating in the garden with juice running down your necks...and especially the laughter while eating the hot peppers. I laughed out loud with y'all. What a blessing. I remember going to the watermelon patch with my grandpa when I was a little girl...busting a yellow meated watermelon on the ground and eating the warm flesh. Nothing better. Great nostalgic memories from about 60 years ago. 🤤😉
Anyone know where I can get the trombonzino squash seed? Did I even spell it right? Edit: tromboncino or rapicante I found it at Baker Creek along with some other incredibly different heirloom seed varieties.
Jess you have been such an inspiration to me. You brought me to the garden, turned my garden into my church... i brought my brother into my garden shenanigans this year. We planted so much and had such amazing plans. My brother was murdered in a mass shooting beginning of june. I have neglected my garden. Ive been out but its such a reminder of him but also peaceful cause I feel his presence in my garden. I went out yesterday finally and pulled a wagon full of tomatoes and now have 30 zucchinis. With out your influence i doubt i would have had the connection to my garden to be able to return to it. Ive come to embrace the wild of my garden. Sincerely, Forever greatful gardener
I am an old lady and I throw busted, bitten, broken tomatoes down on the ground and always have tomato surprise. I love it. Technically I should not be planting any cherry tomatoes as the come up all over. We always have pumpkins also because the usually get left long past Halloween and then just pushed off the porch or steps into the bushes. The vines will pop up and trail along the flower beds.
August garden “she’s wild and she does what she wants”- yup. My garden looks a mess, but she’s producing food for me, my family, and my critters, so she’s all right by me. P. s. I adore hearing your ducks in the background. I just love ducks. I have twelve that run in my orchard, and I could watch them for hours.
Dawn name for the calf means new beginnings, wise one in youth. My aunt who was more like a sister, had a little mini boxer dog who Loved watermelon. Actually that dog loved food. The only thing he turned up was Limburger cheese..but then even the birds stayed away. She bought it but neither of us tried it either. LOL This was N. GA. Flies stayed away, too.
CALF NAME. Chloe Origin: Greek Meaning: "young green shoot" Description: Chloe appeared in Greek mythology as an alternative name for the GODDESS OF AGRICULTURE AND FERTILITY 😎, “Demeter”. She was referred to as Chloe in the spring months, due to the name’s relation to sprouts and growth.
I rejoice with you eating in the garden. When we were growing up on our farm in Virginia, lunch during garden season was a salt shaker, radishes, onions, bell peppers, tiny cucumbers 🥒, 🍅 eaten right where we stood while picking. Thank you for keeping the olden days alive. Bless you Will.
This vlog made my heart sing! I’m an August child and I feel no matter how hard I try I can never keep a pretty garden. It’s always unruly and so am I lol. Also I really like the name Eva. That was my great grandmother’s name and I have always loved it. I wish I could’ve known her. My mom says that she came to visit when I was born and she fell so in love with me that she tried to take me from my mom. My great grandfather had to get her a baby doll to keep and my mom was hesitant to take me back. I know now what was probably going on but it still flatters me to this day.
Loved this video. Had a rough day and have prayed several times today to have something to brighten me up. Well, you certainly did. I love your wisdom. Tell Ben I don't like tomatoes with tight skin either. Love that kid!
A super good tip that really works for me is that you can get the heat from a pepper out of your mouth by sipping hot tea or coffee. The way it was explained to me is that the oil from the peppers is what holds it in your mouth and that oil doesn't melt at body temperature. It _does_ melt at coffee or tea temperature (but not the temperature of Jess's coffee left out in the garden which is cold but she drinks it anyway). The first time I tried it I was surprised at how well it worked. There's a quick burst of heat and then your mouth doesn't burn any more. Sometimes it takes two or three sips.
I vote you should name the caw Heidi, because whenever I think of learning to homestead I think of that scene in the movie Heidi, when Charlie temple learns to milk the goats.
That was about as close to a normal RR tour as we've had in a while. Ben and Mom hanging out in the garden eating tomatoes 😋. Sweet !! I'm really enjoying the new stuff too but for those of us who watched Benjamin helping mom in the garden, and Jess asking if he remembers things he liked when it was half his life time ago ahhhhh!!
Such a lovely tour! Ben is so adorable. Sorry but I got a good laugh out of the hot pepper. One year I picked a pepper thinking it was a sweet pepper and took a big bite - boy was I surprised.
"To Boldly Go Where No Soward Has Gone Before" to raise seed cattle stock - my name suggestion is "Uhura." A woman who went beyond herself. And if the name is to be in Jess' wheelhouse my choice is Abigail.
Hi Jess, I vote for the Devon calf to be called Ruth or Ruthie! Also iridescent green beetles up north are Japanese beetles, which have been heavy duty this year! They have to be knocked off into soapy water or lured away! They have caused damage to our grapes, zinnias and even our maple and birch trees! I hope you don’t those! 😊
I love this video. Super fun watching people eat out of the garden. I love having people over to my garden for the first time and watching the reactions when I tell them "go ahead and eat it!" Lol
Sometimes I fall in love with a seed's story like you. Like my Jimmy Nardello Sweets peppers or my Good Mother Stollard beans. When they're delicious too it's a wonderful bonus!
You know something fun to try? Take a handful of mixed vegetable and fruit seeds and spread them in a circular area and see what comes up! My cousin tried this and said it was fun because you are surprised with what grows and can call it your mystery circle 😃
Our daughter walked in right as you were talking about your little Devon heifer. She said "Name her Legacy." Thanks for all your lessons and blessings. God bless you!
Also, thank you for sharing the wayward and weeds. It's encouraging to know that I am not failing for not having a meticulous garden. This is my 4th year gardening, but 1st on our new land, and we went fro 2, 12x4 raised beds, to about an acre or growing space and about 1/2 acre of it planted. It has been overwhelming and sometimes discouraging, but seeing this makes me feel encouraged.
I thought of you today. I have a perfect little sunflower that is the first of the season here. It's shape and color are just perfect. It is a Sunspot dwarf and when it fully opened it was like it was saying "Look at me! I am so beautiful! " It's the first of the year because deer usually eat them all off before they bloom. I protected these with cages and fake flamingos! 😆
Hahahaha I thought I was the last person on earth that had a mom that tied thread to a junebug and flew it around! Thank you Will, for bringing back such a good memory!
I think I started following you just before Miahs mum died. After years of feeling inadequate gardening in UK allotment style gardens where there were no weeds in sight and the old boys had their veg lined up to the millimeter, you were a breath of fresh air and seeing you garden allowed me to give myself permission to garden imperfectly .
In keeping with the “H” themed names I think Harriet would be a good name because of the legacy of Harriet Tubman leading people to freedom and motivating others to do the same. Food freedom would be the theme in this case. The legacy of Harriet was that she realized that her natural lot in life was her freedom and no one could take that away from her. She led the way to that freedom.
I like Evangeline which means new beginnings. Call her Eva for short. And I love your son's reviews!! This will be my first year doing a fall garden. Praying it does better than our spring! Excited to see the results! My phone is my photo journal for my garden as well lol!
I always admire how you guys are able to plan so far ahead, with such careful thought and in such detail, and just map it out step by step over many years. It is quite a skill you have
This vlog is freakin cute and adorable! I have laughed so much watching y’all sample those peppers. We just harvested a bunch of jalapeños and habaneros commenting on the heat we could still feel on our skin after several washings with soap! Love and hugs, Nana Kelli in Florida
Washing hands with a ripe tomato helps to dissolve the capsaicin off the skin without adding more damage. Also cleans green tomato plant stains. Blessings on your day Kiddo 🥰🌻🐛🌼
Thank You!!!!! Sometimes we just need the little nudge to know what we need, when we need it, even when we don’t know it ourselves, as yet. I’ve learned so much over the years watching your journey. As I walk through my garden, I often think of you, and the inspirations that graces my little piece of heaven. Bless you and your family Jess. Mellen
Sure enjoyed the visit. Will is mighty brave. I’m a big sissy when it comes to hot peppers. I love to grow and cook with bell peppers and sweet peppers. Of course, I’m an old Mimaw. I think my taste buds have been burned too many times. Thank you Jess.❤️✝️🌻
This was probably one of my most favorite videos. I LOVED watching you two go through the garden, talk about what was growing, and try a couple of things. Will getting choked up on that pepper was HYSTERICAL. Sorry Will!
Thank You Jess for admiring me !! my garden is always exceptionally tidy, but it is small & I work in accounting (my own business) so tidiness is my way of methodically working. Great Video- Cheers Denise- Australia😀😀 I have just put in a 27ft new bed so will be busy.
Omg, I taught my 30 something kids the “no thank you” to stuff they don’t like when they were young as well. I think it’s the most important, most overlooked manner. Definitely part of the problem today.
I'd call her Flora. She's the flower containing the first seeds y'all will save for the future. Stay safe and God bless you my friends 🌱 🐄 🐖 🐇 🐓 🐐 🌱 Lisa

Jess, It's nice to see Ben take an active interest in what you do. Follow in your Momma's footsteps Ben. She's a wonderful roll model Ben...your a luck boy.
Eating a very ripe fresh tomato helps to cut the hot pepper heat some. Definitely a very ripe tomato helps take the capsaicin off of your hands and even cleans the green tomato plant stains off as well. Always saved a few of the split or gone over tomatoes for the end of a long day in the tomato fields to pre clean our hands. Love the August garden comment! Sounds like a good Tshirt! Blessings on your day Kiddo!🥰🌻🐛🌼
I love the way you love a wild garden 💚 Something about a wild and unruly garden makes me so happy, and I get such joy seeing your wayward August garden and your love of it
This was a lovely vlog, hearing Ben’s tomato reviews and watching you and Will enjoy messy watermelon straight from and in the garden! I love the name Genesis for your heifer, and you could call her Genny. I am heading out to my garden now and in your honor I will eat the first thing I pick. Okra, cucumber, tomato, or pepper? Any or all will be delicious!
So busy harvesting and canning, that weeding is just not the top of the list! Though every time I'm in my garden I do pick a bucket full of weeds for the chickens!!!
You need to name the heifer calf “Eve” or “Evie”. The mother of all.
Lisa I love that name, too.
Amen
Was just going to type that to. Was the first name that came to mind.
Exactly what came to mind when she asked!!
Love this!!!
Name her "Heirloom". It starts with an H and it's the beginning of many!! 🥰💕
Perfect👍
I love that! I suggested Hannah. Hannah prayed for a son, and promised God that her child would serve Him. Yours is the only other "H" name I've seen.
This the one! Heirloom for sure. Its just to perfect.
I think a good name for your calf would be "Genesis"....the beginning, right? You could call her Genny if you wanted, but officially Genesis. 🙂
Genesis
I like Genesis! I was thinking Eve also.
@@terris6322 I was thinking Eve as well, or Eden.
love that
I was coming to say this too! Genesis!
"She's wild and doesn't listen to nobody" "August garden does what she wants" would make GREAT MERCH!!
Yes!!!!
havilah
Jess, you already said it,
Name that calf Legacy.
I was thinking the same
I was thinking the same too!
This might be my favorite video you’ve ever made. Ben giving reviews of tomatoes, eating food straight out of the garden and making me look at my wild August garden in a completely different way. Today’s video was a salve for my soul 💛

I was thinking name her Charity. That's the name of the ship that the first Devons came to America, the new world in 1623.
And I love your comment, "the August garden has my heart like no other garden because like she's wild and doesn't listen to nobody!"
Eve. As soon as you said you wanted the calf to be the first; the matriarch, I immediately thought of the name Eve.
So did I lol I just commented that 💚
Yup me too!
I like Eve.
Eve was the first mother but her legacy is less than stellar. 🥴
@@motherbear5219 she couldn't resist the lure of fresh fruit - sounds quite Jess-like to me!
Honor, heritage, homage, heiress, heirloom. Huldah means lifetime.
Name her Eden! Similar to the Eve suggestion, takes you back to the OG homestead.
This video of a bunch of farmers just snackin’ away.
Fills my heart.
I like Olive as a name for the calf, because when you said “first fruits” it reminded me of how long olive trees have been around and how we still enjoy their benefits today!
I like this 💟
Oh Florence...that's so perfect! 🕊This little dove has an olive branch in her mouth.
Florence, your thought process on this is quite fabulous! Thank you, May our Father in Heaven bless you and yours Florence. :)
Yes Olive
I went to school with a girl named Genesis Sunflower. It’s actually a perfect name for your little starter heifer, now I think about it. 🌻😁
Genesis could be a great name for your heifer calf 💛
Love it ! 🙏
Genesis is such a good one. Genny for a nickname.
Love Ginny. Sounds like a strong, beautiful lady 👍
Thank you.
Heirloom or Heritage would be a good name! And they both start with H
Name the Devon calf August, she seems like she's wild and does what she wants too! ❤
22:09 "I admire you if your garden is meticulous in August. I don't understand you, but I do admire you." 😂
My name suggestion is Blossom...the beginning of something beautiful. 🌻
That tour was so much fun with you and Will and Ben eating in the garden with juice running down your necks...and especially the laughter while eating the hot peppers. I laughed out loud with y'all. I agree 💯

Oh, Michelle, I'm so very sorry for your loss.
I'm so sorry for you too
I am sorry for your loss.
Benjamin is going to become a tomato connoisseur. No one will be able to top his brilliance comes to how good a tomato is
I think the name Evangeline would be great for a heifer! Homage to Eve and means "good news" which a newborn heifer is!!
Well it sounds like you could use a little help it seems like it's blessfully working out for you💖
I love this approach to planting. Its very "trust the process",haha. I wonder if this method is producing more resilient plants for you.
I like Esther, she was born for such a time as this
August garden “she’s wild and she does what she wants”- yup. My garden looks a mess, but she’s producing food for me, my family, and my critters, so she’s all right by me.
P. s. I adore hearing your ducks in the background. I just love ducks. I have twelve that run in my orchard, and I could watch them for hours.

CALF NAME. Chloe
Origin: Greek
Meaning: "young green shoot"
Description:
Chloe appeared in Greek mythology as an alternative name for the GODDESS OF AGRICULTURE AND FERTILITY 😎, “Demeter”. She was referred to as Chloe in the spring months, due to the name’s relation to sprouts and growth.
This one’s good too
The name Harmony means “a beautiful blending.” Plus, it continues your H theme. 🤎
I initially thought of Esther for the calf but I agree Eve would be perfect!
I initially thought Ruth. I'm enjoying all the other suggestions here in the comments.
I was thinking Eve!
Your calf is beautiful. The name Kiah means"person of earth","start of the season" and " God is strength" . Nice video.
A "EVE" came to me when you said about 'a beginning, a legacy, 1st fruits'.
There is no better add for the tomatoes than the honesty in a child’s smile when they eat them fresh from the plant.

A super good tip that really works for me is that you can get the heat from a pepper out of your mouth by sipping hot tea or coffee. I never go to the garden without a salt shaker for just such an opportunity.
It was so much fun being in the garden with you and Will.
I felt as if I was with friends, talking about everyday, honest life
I vote you should name the caw Heidi, because whenever I think of learning to homestead I think of that scene in the movie Heidi, when Charlie temple learns to milk the goats.
Now we need to start a Shorts trend of #jessmademedoit videos of us taking a big ol' bite of our gardens
The Hebrew name for 1st fruits literally translates to promise to come.
‘Promise’ would be nice❤️
Ohm GP...that's a wonderful idea. I have agreed with at least 5 or 6 names already. Promise...I like it.
Oh my gosh, Will is adorable! 🥰 I love eating right out of the garden.
I got "that" going on in my garden right now 😅😂 .big weeds but beautiful food ❤🥰 bless you & everyone who sees this!
Your videos make my heart so happy, thank you for all you do for the community
Sometimes I fall in love with a seed's story like you. Like my Jimmy Nardello Sweets peppers or my Good Mother Stollard beans. When they're delicious too it's a wonderful bonus!
The name Eve comes to mind 😊
You know something fun to try? Take a handful of mixed vegetable and fruit seeds and spread them in a circular area and see what comes up! My cousin tried this and said it was fun because you are surprised with what grows and can call it your mystery circle 😃
Oh my gosh! My mom told me about tying a string to a june bug and flying it around! So fun to hear Will share that!
I did that as a child growing up in Indiana. I used cotton string though.
I think a great name for the calf would be Sarah - her spiritual legacy was Mother of a Nation.
I second this one! She is also the little princess, which is what Sarah means.
I like Primis. It’s how you say first in Latin. Thank you for inspiring me to get a garden going again. Prayers to you and your family. 🇺🇸🙏❤️Julie.
If your little Devin calf will be the first and a legacy breed, what about the name Eve?
I appreciate you being honest about weeds in the garden. It’s a real battle, but it’s a part of life
The calf’s name could be Carolina
In keeping with the “H” themed names I think Harriet would be a good name because of the legacy of Harriet Tubman leading people to freedom and motivating others to do the same. Food freedom would be the theme in this case. The legacy of Harriet was that she realized that her natural lot in life was her freedom and no one could take that away from her. Her name should be Eden. The garden that created all things. You could call her Edy❤
I love that name, Andrea.
I always admire how you guys are able to plan so far ahead, with such careful thought and in such detail, and just map it out step by step over many years. It is quite a skill you have
Basanti: means “spring” (this is a female cow name), and Maya: means “dream” (a name for a female cow)
Nothing better than standing in your overgrown garden munching on a melon or tomato...yum!!
This vlog is freakin cute and adorable! I have laughed so much watching y’all sample those peppers. We just harvested a bunch of jalapeños and habaneros commenting on the heat we could still feel on our skin after several washings with soap! Love and hugs, Nana Kelli in Florida

“Bona fide” is a great name! It’s grandiosity is perfect!
Signed up for the course today! I'm looking forward to it. It will be a great refresher. Thanks!
Mellen
Im in Illinois and I grow the sweetheart tomatoes. They are just starting to ripen but they are loaded with tomatoes.
Eve would be a beautiful name for her
This was probably one of my most favorite videos. I LOVED watching you two go through the garden, talk about what was growing, and try a couple of things. Will getting choked up on that pepper was HYSTERICAL. Sorry Will!
Ben is growing up too fast! Loosing his baby face 😭 I haven't been around that long but he's grown so much in the past few years.
ABIGAIL!! (my 8 year old son suggested this). It means "my father's joy". Her legacy will be the joy her line will spread.
My daughter's name is Eve. I think that would make a beautiful name for your calf. :)
Thank You Jess for admiring me !! my garden is always exceptionally tidy, but it is small & I work in accounting (my own business) so tidiness is my way of methodically working. Great Video- Cheers Denise- Australia😀😀 I have just put in a 27ft new bed so will be busy.
Eve was of course the first name I thought given your perimeters.
Omg, I taught my 30 something kids the “no thank you” to stuff they don’t like when they were young as well. I think it’s the most important, most overlooked manner. Definitely part of the problem today.

I think you should name your calf Eve!
Ajvarski peppers are definitely a sweet pepper. I've grown them for several years and they are my favorite sweet pepper.
H e a r t l e y is what I would call the calf. For the heart on her head, and in keeping with the H names. Cathy H.
I love the way you love a wild garden 💚 Something about a wild and unruly garden makes me so happy, and I get such joy seeing your wayward August garden and your love of it

I think Sarah. Like Abraham’s Sarah. What a legacy name. Multiply like the sands of the seas 😍😍🙌🏻
So busy harvesting and canning, that weeding is just not the top of the list! Though every time I'm in my garden I do pick a bucket full of weeds for the chickens!!!
This is such a fun comment section. I just love how many of these name suggestions are biblical.
