  • Impressed with the solark 15k! Been using it for a half year or so now.
    Subscribe for more updates coming on the whole house and what its like to actually live off grid!
    Many more modifications to come as I get more used to living off grid and with our needs and adding more solar to maximize production and use it where ever possible.
    see my other video here for a small modification I did as i didn't like how the sol ark was charging from generator: • Sol Ark 15K updates an...

    Looks great! Keep an eye on the Chargry BMS, mine flaked out after 6 months. Also a heat pump HW tank, rheem makes a good one will cut your elec. consumption. I have the 50g for the past 3 years supporting a house of 4., no issues.

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      which one did you go with after? what was the fail symptom? I am powering mine from battery bank. they all work well however I am noticing after time that some of the charge currents drift out of calibration. they are too balanced cells so the chargery isn't doing much work it's just a fail safe.

      @@mylesoffgrid I ended up getting a Batrium WatchMon 4, Decent but pricey. If I was to do it again I would explore something else like a REC, Seplos or JKBms. The YT channel Andy’s garage has a number of good videos on BMSs. My chargery issues were lack of accuracy in voltage measurement. Could not rely on them. My cells / battery are similar rock steady the past 2 yrs..

      @@zekeboz5533 also for your heat pump hot water. Does it take heat from the house to make the hot water or is it an outside air source style?

    • @zekeboz5533
      @zekeboz5533 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heat from the house. It sits in a basement so we don’t notice the impact of it running.

      Zekeboz, I just asked the question you kind of answered. Are you having a good experience w/ the Rheem heat pump tank
      ? And are you also storing in a propane tank for your radiant in floor heating? Thanks Mike

    Ever think about a hybrid water heater? If you have any surplus heat in that room it can suck up, most only draw 400-800 watts in heat pump mode

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but we live in a cold climate so it doesn't work for us. Great for southern climates!

    nice setup. I just installed a propane WH after the electric WH that came with the house. Could you do a more in depth video explaining your recirc pump? I'm assuming it is set up to recirculate on smart load as well to continue to burn excess power when the sun is out and not just shut down the element when the electric tank reaches the set temp.

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct! I'll try to make another video. Basically when the tank reaches almost set temperature the circ pump comes on and stays on until the sun goes down and smart load shuts off

    Hi. That's a very impressive setup. Only question I've is don't those lipo4 need to be compressed to prevent bulging that usually develops over time due to charge/discharge cycles.

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a lot of heated debate with the compression. The verdict is for mobile applications compression is mandatory. For stationary applications like mine where the batteries will cAlendar age out before they become depleted from use. It's not needed.

    I’m starting a new construction. Will be all solar w/propane generator and some appliances. Heat will be radiant in floor heat similar to yours. I’m wanting to stay all electric as much as possible. My idea heat pump hot water heater and dump into propane hot water heater to take advantage of extra solar during the day to store hot water. I’m curious what your thoughts are and why you didn’t pursue a heat pump hot water heater. What am I missing? Thanks Mike

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      I will certainly make more indepth videos shortly. What climate are you in? I am in an area where I need all my heat so using indoor heat to make hot water is not efficient. If you live in Arizona or something then it totally makes sense. But where I am heat is needed 6+ months of the year. Ac is really only needed for 2 months.

      @@mylesoffgrid Makes sense, I’m at 8900 ft in colorado, never need AC we also have lots of sunny days. I was going to put the heat pump water heater in my electronics closet in hope they would compliment each other on temperature balance. Thank you for the reply.

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a good idea! Heat pumps strive at turning excess heat into usable heat very efficiently!

    Very nice setup. Which Champion generator do you use? I have a manual start 5KW generator but I'd like to set something up with 2 wire start in an outhouse. Thanks.
    I have a 12K and running on generator if the sun is shinning the charging current is limited to what the generator is set to no matter how much solar you have. If the solar exceeds the generator power then the generator carries on running but not putting any power into charging the batteries which seems kinda stupid and wasteful of fuel. I was hoping that both gen and solar would contribute to charging the batteries faster but that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried upping the battery charging current beyond what the generator is capable of, however, if the sun goes behind the clouds then the Solark proceeds to overload the generator as it tries to maintain the charge current. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

      I have the champion 8.5kw I needed a document to figure out the two wire start, and i moved the batteries inside to keep them warm, haven't ran that generator since christmas though !
      Also please see my other video on the sol ark and generator power to help you with your issue! Solark cannot charge and discharge at the same time.

      I bought it at Canadian tire and used a sprayable rubber liner to cost the entire inside of the cabinet.

    Crappy setup, the leads from battery to the inverter have to be very short. The issue is related to their inductance, which will result in capacitor failure from the inverter, as you stress them by decoupling the battery low impedance with those long wires inductance. Always check the manual related to wire length (you cannot just mitigate it's effect by just using thicker wires...)

    • @mylesoffgrid
      @mylesoffgrid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure how you could make the wires much shorter. The batteries are on the opposite side of the wall. All feedback is good we are still learning!
