  • Part 5 of the apple tree from seed, started in 2015. It has been slowly developing and still has many years ahead of it.

    I’m sure the tree appreciated an off year to do as it pleases. Glad to see she had more vigor this year.
    I really appreciate what you are putting out for us, Ian. Thank you

    I have a self set crab apple it was suffering from the heat to begin with so put it in a pond pot to get good roots. Will be putting into bonsai soil next year. Quite tall at the moment so good to see it develops well. Keep growing.xx

    Good going mate. Instead of wire....You can use tooth picks and longer kebab sticks to train the branches in directions you want. Just cut to size and sharpen the ends of the stick. Get the branch in the direction you want and stick them into the bark👍

      intersting. ive not heard of that. is there any videos of any one doin this?

      I've seen Tony from Tony's bonsai use a thick aluminium wire in one of his videos.
      Its dead easy though. You want to re direct a branch...like this apple branch you pulled down in your video. Just stick a toothpick (for short distance), or a kebab stick (you'll have to sharpen it at the right length).
      Its only for re directing branches up, down or sideways.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see. i will have to check it out.
      Although, i dont see why you wouldnt just use a guy wire. same results, no damage.

      True, and I do, but most times a toothpick is easier...and way faster, and its much less intrusive...especially when I water. I hate it when the watering can hits the guy wire..🥺

    Do love the taper you've developed - pretty growth habit too. How ramified to apple trees generally get?

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Sue. I guess it depends on the tree. The ones in orchids can be pretty ramified. they are usually quite small and squat, with multiple trunks coming up from down low.

    Quality content buddy, a salute to you patience.
    I am starting to get into planting a bit and making bonsai is what I want to pick up, looks like art to me frankly, and I think I'll be able to apply a lot of creativity once I learn the basics. What can be a good starting plant to make bonsai of, from the seed that is? I don't want to buy it rather grow from scratch. Is this how long any bonsai would take to reach this state (as your apple)? Was thinking if there is a possibility of a shorter term plant which can basically assure me that I am doing things right without directly investing 5-6 years in it.

    • @BackGardenBonsai
      @BackGardenBonsai  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      cheers, you are right, it is an art but you need basics down first as such.
      i would say this apple is quite slow. you can speed things up by planting them in the ground / large pot, that will make it thicker. but for growing in a small pot this is probably pretty typical. although i would warn you the whole trying to rush thing mindset will break you. you just have to accept its slow. but you dont need to worry about being assured you are doing things right. they are so slow to respond that even if you do mess something up, it can be fixed with time.
      slowlness and time have to become your friend lol. but check out - www.backgardenbonsai.com/beginner-bonsai-resources/
      loads of different articles there to help you work out what is what and that shoudl steer you on the right path at least.

      @BackGardenBonsai  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its probably old enough now, the issue is i prune it , so it doesn't really get a chance to develop the flowers. If i just left it alone all season it would

      it hasnt, but it should. i do prune it a lot, so that has probably prevented it, or maybe it is still to young ...but with the right age and conditions it should flower
