  • This is the fifth video in our series of mango tasting videos. Subscribe to our channel to see more of our mango tasting and fruit tree grafting videos.
Today, Valerie and Craig taste a Po Pyu Kalay mango we purchased on Pine Island. This is also known as PPK and Lemon Meringue. We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm and from other local Florida farms.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

Lemon meringue is my favorite mango, this year was my first time trying it, I almost lost it, every since tasting it, I have been on the hunt to see if I can find someone to sell me 10 or 20 pounds of PPK, I thought I found someone on facebook Mango Tree group, I cashapp someone $75.00 for 10 pounds and never received the mangos in the mail, but I am happy I got chance to eat 4 lemon meringue mangoes! they were life changing!

Craig do you like PPK better then Orange Sherbert?

This year may be the first year we can taste ours side by side. Craig probably prefers PPK, but our orange sherbet tree was hit hard by the freeze in 2022.

Mmmmm PPK!! I absolutely love them & think they might be my favorite or tied for 1st with another lol. But I watched your video & tore up the one that was sitting a few feet away that was calling me 😂. Lemon Meringues make me want to top work almost all my other mango trees over to Lemon Meringue Trees 😁

Sergio Perez I agree! Even when not perfectly ripe, they are great. Perfectly ripe - just amazing!

Sulcata Grove I think that's one of the main reasons why I love it so much. Great point! I've even caught my wife who's allergic like your daughter to the smell, sap, skins of mangos eating some. So the flavor definitely appeals to many.. Great tasting video! Your side kick's smile at the 2 second mark says it all 😁

Sergio Perez I'm allergic to the sap too. Thankfully Craig peels the mangos for us all. I am hoping eating mangos will eventually desensitize those of us while are allergic to the urushiol. My reaction has definitely improved after I had a huge exposure to the sap 4 years ago after picking Mallika mangos.

Sulcata Grove Wow! Well I hope it does get better!! At least you aren't overly sensitive to the smell to the point where it's hard to breathe and gives you headaches & eventually start with itchy-ness/hives... this unfortunately happens to my wife. So she knows when there's mangos in the house & even after I've cut them she has a hard time if she can smell them. (Even the seeds that have still have the slight smell of mango)

Sergio Perez That is so sad. Not being able to smell mangos.

Jerry heath - I have a guanabana tree planted on the south side of our house. It never loses is leaves. It set fruit last year, but with the drought, they didn't develop. Our tree is blooming again now. It's a fantastic fruit and worth trying to grow with some cold protection. We will be putting in grafted 'Miami' guanabana this year. It is a very productive cultivar.

Are you interested in a tree or the fruit? If you are in Palm Beach county Florida, Excalibur nursery is close to you and I imagine they would have grafted trees available year round. For fruit, some options near you might be Excalibur, Walter Zill's, or Truly Tropical around June. We often have grafted trees available here in Sarasota and the fruit is common on this coast as well.

Recently tasted few Po You Kalay.Tries to extract the true flavor out of it.What I tasted so far is a very sweet and sour candy. There is no genuine mango attributes in it.It could be better options for those who don't like the real mango flavor.

I've heard from several people that PPK is a poor producer. Great tasting fruit though.

Nicholas Stroganoff Hmmm, the large trees I’ve seen have been loaded and our newly planted tree has been producing great too.

Do you have a list of your favorite varieties of mangoes? I'm looking for 2 varieties that are sweet. One having a citrus/pineapple flavor and one non citrus flavor. Ideally they would be disease resistant and produce well. Thanks

A Woods Glenn is a great classic flavor mango. Maybe Orange Sherbet or Lemon Meringue for a citrus flavored mango. Coconut cream and sugar loaf and excellent too.
