Jerry Goodman was THE perfect violinist for this first original Mahavishnu band. I enjoy him every single time....and even had the pleasure of having Mr. Cobham for a teacher for a season. Billy Cobham is the finest drummer I have ever seen AND THATS COMING FROM A GUY WHO HAS BEEN PLAYING FOR OVER 50 SOME ODD YEARS

for a moment i thought it was Jean-Luc Ponty, but maybe he was with was it Frank Zappa back then or too young. ah "(Ponty) continued to work on a variety of projects - including two of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra albums Apocalypse (1974) and Visions of the Emerald Beyond (1975) and tours until 1975,[1] when he signed with Atlantic. So Zappa was Jazz kind of Fusion with some Contemporary influences. and UZEB was kind of from that school

Sorry, Hendrix was doing something very-very different from what we are hearing here. I saw the Mahvishnu Orchestra live three times 72-74 and the evolution of Jan Hammer during this period was great moving more with ever-evolving keyboards. Hendrix had no keyboards in his band (Electric Lady Land production being an exception) though Noel Redding was a very adventurous bass player, Mitch Mitchell's drumming style was very good but worlds away from what Billy is doing here. Billy, of course, was just amazing and so was John but there were very different aims for guitar playing between John and Jimi. Listen closer and hear that no one was better, just very different.

This is definitely just an opinion. Musicians are better today thanks to technology. You pick out pop music and of course they aren’t the best, but there are great jazz musicians today, metal, hell even EDM.

the dirty sound came from a Moog ring modulator pedal. He brings it for that grit. I saw this band a lot in their prime, Billy Cobham is just a force of nature on the drums, he's like Mt. Everest. The first time you hear him, you ask yourself "why do I think I'm a great drummer when..."

  • @mejsjalv

Favourite band... EVER, and I love tons of different music. But these MF's were something else. Aerosmith used to open for them and the audience pretty much booed them. Still wonder what the Aerosmith guys thought back then in 73' about the insane skills of headlining Mahavishnu. Mahavishnu is a really humbling listen for musicians.
Seems like the dude here got a permanent stank face after listening to this. hehe "GET IT DRUMMER!"... Billy did blow my mind right away more than 20 years ago when I dropped the needle on "Vital Information" from their debut album. In a couple seconds he became my favourite drummer forever.

Kind of like surfing huge waves, going for it and hanging on for dear life - lots of fun at the limits of what you can do, and the limits of these guys is so high and they push it even from there... I always appreciated that they did it this way, no one else would or could have. Thanks for the reaction! Oh, I think Jan may use a ring modulator on the Rhodes to help with the dirty sound.

Actually, that Rhodes is a Suitcase model, not a Stage. In The Noonward Race, each member solos in a key that corresponds with their astrological sign. 12 signs of the Zodiac, 12 notes in the Western Tonal System. Noon is also 12 o'clock.

Laird & Goodman got into a fight during the studio recording of 'Noonward Race"? I believe Mclaughlin signaled to keep rolling, and they left the disturbance on. You can hear it if You listen for it, especially with headphones. They knocked Hammer and his keyboards over during the fist fight. A Jew and an Irishman walk into a studio...hahaha. Somehow, i always thought that the whole song related to a brawl atmosphere anyway~~hahaha. *R.i.P. Rick Laird
'Inner Mounting Flame' was definitely a game changer in 1971. One of my all time favorites, and Jeff Beck's also. When Jeff heard these guys while cruising around in one of his rods, that was the turning point for Beck, and 'Blow By Blow' was his answer to the up~and coming Fusion era, and Beck's 360 degree career change. *R.i.P. Jeff Beck. *God speed Jeff, in a souped~up '32 Coupe.

in this band "the producer" just finds the right venues because actual Musicians are in charge, and the message is advanced, abstract, uplifting, non commercial. In Miles' band, Henderson (who knew he could sing?) Lucas and Mtume went on to become "producers" and I hope they used the money well. I first heard that word "producer" in a music making context the 90s around the same time I heard "marketing". seems related...

What is insane is that these cats played like this live! The guitarist played with Miles Davis band and the drummer was an "Army brat." This is Jazz Fusion at it's very beginning. For more of Billy Cobham's excellent drumming, check out his work with the late great George Duke. "Stratus," "Rush Hour," "Red Baron," to name a few songs. Kudos.

I watched that BBC concert broadcast in late ‘72. I never thought I’d ever see it again, but eventually YT was invented!
Looking at it now, it strikes me that John, even as leader of the band, seemed a bit ill at ease and didn’t play all that much, compared to the others. Jerry, Jan and Billy were on spectacular form. He also seemed to be struggling with both his sound and that double neck thing. Strangely, his technique developed in leaps and bounds for the next 20 years.
