Karl Marx's theory of alienation describes the social alienation (Entfremdung, estrangement) of people from aspects of their human nature (Gattungswesen, 'species-essence') as a consequence of living in a society of stratified social classes.
The four dimensions of alienation identified by Marx are alienation from:
(1) the product of labor,
(2) the process of labor,
(3) Alienation from other Workers
(4) Alienation from self
