That was when I knew this song was on a completely different level than other Disney songs. There is just so much authenticity when it comes to the singing, with the right amount pop, and a splash of musical theatre…it’s the best song in the film and it’s not even really close. Surface Pressure is probs one of the most emotionally driven one and also the message and the themes there are beautiful. BUT it doesn’t come close to Bruno. Honestly, Bruno could have released w/out a movie and it would have been a hit. Ijs💁🏾‍♂️

Something that a lot of people don't knows, Is that in Colombia, when somebody says that "It lookes like it's going to rain" on a wedding, it's a sign that the marriage won't last.
That's why Pepa was angry with Bruno and not really by the weather

Woaaaah that's so cool! I mean what it adds to the situation. There was already the implication that she thought that was a prophecy and not a joke, and her day was supposed to be perfect ("no clouds *allowed* on the sky"), which made sense with the pressure she was raised with, but now there's also the cultural part, and how much of an actual Bad Omen she thought the joke was

Did you notice how when Dolores’ part pops up from her initial ‘Hey’ all of the background noises (footsteps, skin contact of her grabbing Mirabel’s arm, the swish of her skirts when she turns) they’re all EXTREMELY amplified. When they’re doing their moving footsteps you can see they’re only using the tips of their toes but the sound is BIG. Showcasing Dolores’ powers of super hearing, such a small but glorious effect 😭

That's the thing about this movie is that there isn't an actual villain, instead it's more of a community/family/cultural pressure. From the first song, Lisa was pressured by the burdens her family (herself included) expected her to carry. Bruno was misunderstood by everyone and they pressured him into running away because they always blamed him. Mirabel was very similar where they (mostly her grandma) blamed her, and she felt responsible for the family falling apart, even though it fell apart because of their broken relationships. Isabella was pressured into marrying someone she didn't like, so on and so forth.
they all had all of these unaddressed issues and their family fell apart.

  • @legendswarble2845
    @legendswarble2845 3 ปีที่แล้ว +143

The green tablet was one of Bruno's prophesies. Basically, it depicted that the fate of the family rests on her and would crumble if she failed/allowed/caused it.

    • @unvoicedapollo3318
      @unvoicedapollo3318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I actually don't think it was a prophecy of possible failure. Spoilers:
I believe the vision was a representation of a fate that had to happen. It showed Mirabel at the center to represent she needed to initiate change but that doing so would create cracks and cause the old foundation to crumble. But her getting the family's issues out in the open helped to resolve them and thus rebuild the house and family unit.

Because of her not having a gift it created a rift between all of her family members. She was only close to her parents and Antonio, and only because he didn’t have a gift for 5 years. So the prophecy was to show that she could either start the crumbles, or fix them.

Everyone assumes that the perfect princess type somehow got this prophecy that says her life will continue being perfect. And that’s what they think she’s getting with her flowers and her engagement. But it’s all a show she puts on for her family and her Abuela.
But the life she actually wants (The one Bruno promised in his prophecy), is one where her Abuela accepts her as she is. Without expectations. One where she can just be.

Pepa, the lady who's singing, has the ability to control weather with her emotions : when she's happy, it's sunny, sad --> cloudy, worried, angry --> rain/thunder/hurricane. Bruno is her brother, he's also part of the family Madrigal - his ability is that he can predict events. So when Bruno predicted her marriage, Pepa got upset and lost control on her emotions, that's why the hurricane occured . ( sorry for my bad english, I tried as hard as I could xd )

You really have to listen to "The family Madrigal", so many things will become clear.
What i find most interesting about this song is the order and way in which the storys are told:
Pepa (The Bride) is Brunos Sister. SHe actually _knew_ him and her Stories are firsthand.
Dolores, the girl is Pepas Eldest Daughter. Her Verse starts with "grew to live in fear of Bruno stuttering and stumbeling" - she still knew Bruno, but only as a child. Her perception of him is warped by the fear the grownups around her had of Bruno.
and then last, Camillo, Pepas younger Son, dolores brother. He is miscevious in general, but he also barely knows Bruno. Bruno vanished shortly after Mirabels (The main characters) 5th birthday, at which time I am guessing Camillo was only one or two years older, 7 at the most. His perception is even less fact based, mostly build on rumors and stories.

This is the part of the song that creeps me out most. And ironically, the next line's visuals creep me out more than Bruno, himself! It looks for a second or two like the kid singing has no eyes! Thank heaven it's just the shadows and shading.

I love how you pause and really look at every verse!! I didn’t notice the first time I watched this in the movie how many times Dolores literally tells everyone she can HEAR him. It’s revealed later he’s in the walls and at the end of the movie she says she could hear him the whole time. (Her gift is super hearing.)

I haven't seen the film, but I love that you picked up on the ostracizing of this character just for speaking truth. From the opening line I got the feeling that the Madrigal family was hiding something, not necessarily sinister but a conflict. I love the storytelling in this song and the layering of vocals is pretty amazing.

What I love about this song is how it has two different meanings in so many areas. How you understand it the first time and the second time is so different. For example, When Dolores sings that she associates him with the sound of falling sand, the first time, you think of "psst", but the second time, you know she's literal.
For Isabela, it's even more layered, and it takes a couple of times until you realise how she thinks about that prophecy.

Brief Summary: Abuela Madrigal, her triplets and her husband, were trying to escape trouble that was brewing in their home town in Columbia. They fled and at a river Abuelo (the husband) stopped to offer a distraction to these ensuing horsemen. They killed him and his sacrifice caused the candle Abuela was holding for light to emit a magical glow and it created the place of their refuge known as Encanto, hidden away deep in the Colombian wild where the threatening horsemen couldn’t get to Abuela, her triplets and the rest of the refugees with her. The candle’s glow also made the Madrigal family home, a sentient house named Casita, and on the 5th birthday of a Madrigal family member it gives them a magical power and a room to match said power complete with glowing door. The candle has stayed miraculously lit for several years.
The Family Madrigal and their powers are as follows:
Alma “Abuela”: keeper of the magic ever burning candle that created Encanto and Casita, and matriarch of the family.
Bruno: Has the power to see into the sands of time and foresee the possible future.
Pepa: Controls the weather depending on her mood.
Julietta: Can heal any ailment through her cooking.
    Louisa: Super strong.
Isabella: Can grow and manipulate plants.
Camilo: Can shape shift to look like any person.
Delores: Super hearing. Can hear so much as a pin drop from miles away.
    Pedro: Can communicate with animals.
Mirabelle is the only Madrigal who hasn’t received a gift and is desperately trying to fix her family’s issue of the magic fading and cracks appearing all over the house and throughout Encanto itself. The key to which is through Bruno, who nobody talks about or has seen for years as his gift has seemingly brought nothing but misery to the family and townsfolk of Encanto and he has all but disappeared. Mirabelle has gone into his room, his tower and collected those green glowing shards to literally piece together the final prophecy that Bruno made before he vanished.

That's mostly right. Except for most of her life Isabela could only grow perfect Rose's. Not until later is she able to grow other vegetation, which I think is why she has a part in this song. It took me a while and a lot of listening to figure out since all the proficiency ate bad then why was she part of the song? Both her proficiencies where good, she would get the man of her dreams and her powers would grow, but truth is by that point her powers hadn't grown she was just little miss perfect rose girl and was sick of it. On top of that she was promised the man of her dream but was stuck with apparently the man of her cousins dreams.

Bruno's talent is prophecy. They get mad if he gives a prophecy they don't like. (He tells the future. He doesn't control it; he just tells them what he sees.)
And like avoiding a bad luck charm, they don't talk about Bruno.
