It's pretty simple in my eyes why he did not get selected first overall ... A GM in the NBA will get fired if they select him first and he underperforms. Plain and simple.
But if they select Deandre Ayton and he turns out to be a bust it's not a problem because he was the consensus pick and everybody saw him play college ball so that kind of mistake does not cost anybody their job.
It didn't matter that we had more tape on this guy than Darko Milicic, he was still being talked about as some sort of mystery player who we didn't see against top flight competition even though the dude was playing against real men in Europe.

The Suns though, that just straight up isn’t fair. Did you even bother to watch Ayton when he was in college? The kid looked like the next coming of AD, and literally looked like a grown 28 year old man when he was 18.
Should they have taken Doncic? Of course!! Were they wrong though to pick Ayton? Absolutely not

    • @steveo.111
      @steveo.111 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@randy2949 I'm not suggesting Ayton is a bust though. But look at my core argument...just imagine the Suns GM looking at Ayton and Luka and thinking "damnit I think Luka is the better pick, he's the MVP of the Euroleague at 18" or whatever.
What kind of space does he have to make that choice? My argument is for European players in general, because if Luka played NCAA ball you can imagine this might be different. They have a higher threshold to clear and I believe it's due to the consequences of drafting a bust from Europe vs NCAA bust.
And Luka didn't even really go 3rd, he went 5th because Atlanta just used him to grab an extra asset out of Dallas because they knew they wanted Luka. They never intended to keep him.

I don't care what suns fans say. Sarver shat the bed on this one. They had kokoshkov, the plan was to aquire capela that offseason. They would be title favorites vor the next 10 years with luka, book, bridges and probably jarred allen when the nets decided to get rid of him back then.

@@babezabe9197 i don't see how jarret allen and capela couldn't fill aytons role on the suns imo. Duncan was an all nba player as a rookie, led the spurs to a chip in his second year, comparing him and ayton is much crazier than ayton to allen and capela. Also saying luka and harden are a zero on defense is not true. Harden played great defense recently for the sixers and also luka is neutral on that end as well. To say luka is a player you like if you watch stats is an absurd thing to say. He has elite vision and collapses the defense regularly. My point is it is much more difficult to replace luka than ayton imo. Luka is a top 10 player and ayton is simply not. Even though they have chris paul now, they won't have him for long given his age, or at least not as long as they'd have luka. Kokoshkov may not be an accomplished nba trainer but he proved he can work with luka. But that doesn't matter anyway if they had their eyes on monty williams.

      @@emirmujabasic8477
Takođe, Maveriksi nisu nijednom pobedili Sanse otkakako su Luka i Ejton draftovani.
"To say luka is a player you like if you watch stats is an absurd thing to say. He has elite vision and collapses the defense regularly." Isto radi i Harden, i obojica useru krevet kad zagusti, jer takva vrsta košarke nije pobednička.

@@ren2871 You’re right perimeter play is more significant in modern NBA, but the ability to rotate around a reliable big man is still seen as essential, it’s the reason why small ball Houston failed, and why other teams are reluctant to play small ball for long spells (the Mavs are doing well, but a big man is top of their shopping list for the off season). The big man is not the most important element of a team, but it is important. You’ll be hard pressed to find many Suns fans who would choose different could they go back in time to 2018 (there’s countless threads of Suns fans discussing it online). On the bright side it’s one of those rare instances where every team involved came away happy: Suns, Hawks & Mavs (everyone except the Kings, that is lol).

The scouting report said that if he'd turn on his motor consistently he'd be the next great big. I personally never saw it at Arizona. He does fit well with what the Suns are doing but Chris Paul turned that team around but yeah, you can't say it was a disaster for the Suns. It will be like Bowie and Jordan. DeAndre Ayton is a top 5 big in the league already (and in my opinion, the big that plays the best defense next to a healthy AD), and the Suns made the Finals with him being their best performer up to the final two games against the Bucks. Also, they couldn't have afforded to pay Bridges (a future superstar) if they were to pay Luka the money he's earning with the Mavs, and don't even get me started on how poor of a fit Luka would be alongside Book. The Suns made a right decision, and they will only profit more in the future. By the time CP3 hangs it up, and it doesn't look like it's going to be anytime soon, they are going to have (at least) a Big 4 of Book, DA, Bridges and Cam J. Also, Luka got Harden like trajectory (if Harden had blossomed earlier in his career), and Ayton got Duncan like trajectory to his career. I think you can pretty well guess who I would have rather as my franchise cornerstone.

A dude who's been playing PROFESSIONAL basketball in the 2nd best league in the world since he was 16, won MVP in that league, was clearly the greatest European prospect EVER...he was already elite at running pick and roll, had proven himself to be a high IQ guy, etc.

I think in one season Ayton would be solid defensively because we're missing size in the paint. Powell, kleber, Chris's are basically power forwards. • @TheRealBlueSwan

Yeah, Ayton going #1 made sense at the time. Also, there were aspects to Lukas game which made it reasonable to doubt how well he would adapt to the NBA. He proved all of the doubters very very wrong, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't some sense to the doubts that some people had, mainly with lack of athleticism and general slowness on the court. Luka is so good that he can force everybody to play at his pace, but that wasn't a surefire thing at the time of the draft.

here after Dallas' game 7 win. Luka doesn't care about individual honors like MVP. he loves pressure, and hunts for matchups that people think are counterproductive for him. he relishes being in the playoffs. it's perfect for him. he's never had a bad playoff game, even when Dallas has lost. he's not gone down the path of being a Harden 2.0, he just wants rings like Giannis. the question of Luka being an all time great is not one of if, it's one of when. and I think that time is coming MUCH faster than any of us think.
