    I know this channel gets the rights to different BBC and I think French public broadcasting documentaries, but I'm seriously so grateful you exist. I love history content and in the US, it's very hard to find actual educational content on television. Absolute History + PBS + CuriosityStream + History Hit has been a winning combo for me.

      Yes, our history channel has turned into a reality channel. I can't stand reality TV!! 🤮

      Seriously, wth? The history content here has somehow turned into a pawn shop show. The history being the items people bring in to pawn.

      Sadly this so called reality television is what sells ,I don't want to say the people who watch it are stupid ,nor the people who are shown are stupid, but it's shocking to me how screwed up some are . I see some things and it's like we'll that takes the cake! I can't believe how crazy or ridiculous these people are! But then days past and I see more that takes the cake. I suppose some find this appealing, because it's all over all the networks. I use to watch only the history Channel back to back with excellent shows . Now it's mundane and watered down mostly. Yet History plus still has great selection of informative series. So then it's up to us to find it. On a whole I believe all of society is shockingly screwed up especially in the USA. It's important for atleast some of us to to keep up and get education from the right sources. It's obvious that our Government is failing and the main academy of science and history is false. The ones at the top want to stay at the top. If they continue to misleading us and keeping us sick and medicated is how they win. We should question everyone and thing. Most people get information from the internet or the news and that is misleading us . How many people do you see reading books versus on their cellphone? I believe now is the age of aquarist. So open a book and read 📚

    I knew about the volcano (Somewhere in Mexico or South America?) that caused the climate change in the known world (and subsequent famines, plagues and societal upheavals) in the mid 6th century. I'm glad this was mentioned in the video - It added the "why" to the Viking story.

    Excellent series. It's so fascinating how a people burst onto the historical scene, seem to take over for a while and then fade from memory and are subsumed in other cultures and then become reduced to unidimensional stereotypes. We forget they were real people with identifiable desires and dreams. This series seems to suggest one thing that is a new idea to me and is very interesting: Vikings became Frankish (in Normandy, I mean) before the Frankish became French, and so you could say that the Normans and the West Franks together would to a large extent define what 'France' and 'French' would mean in the coming centuries.

    Nice documentary as usual. But this one falls victim to the same flaw as many, MANY others. It uses modern maps that show features that weren't there for hundreds of years.

    Lindisfarne might have been a cultural missunderstanding.
    In nordic proper behavior of a host.
    Anyone may enter your home and ask for food and drinks as long as they stay in the hallway until you invite them inside.
    Now....
    Our vikingfriends here have just been at sea for a week in a very small boat with no privacy.
    They are wet, tired, a little angry, maby light seasickness.
    But most of all hungery and thirsty...
    And now those rude monks just close the doors in their faces....
    Of cause you will go into an angry raidingmode!

      Maybe, but most likely not. There wasn't much cultural difference at the time between Anglo-Saxons and Danes except for religion. The Anglos came from Jutland and Angeln in Denmark to begin with, so culturally, they would be pretty similar (again, save for religious ones).
      They were most likely viewed as easy pickings and probably wanted to vent on unarmed perceived weaklings with no weapons to defend their treasures after a long voyage. A man who couldn't defend his property, life, or wealth was viewed only as a potential slave or soon-to-be corpse.

      They lost me at "vulcanic ash lingered above this specific area above Scandinavia for at least weeks, causing crops to fail and people to leave and plunder other lands".
      Maybe humans have always been humans and always looked at neighbours in envy, causing them to take action and move towards them in anger.

    • @Orphen42O
      @Orphen42O 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The devastation due to the volcanic eruption in the middle of the 6th century caused years of bad harvests that led to the migration of the Norse from Scandinavia. Raiding probably resulted from the necessity to obtain resources from more vulnerable people.

      first, history is written by the victors and the Vikings were defeated so their history is written by people who hated them. second, you can not make value judgements on ancient people based on modern values. The middle ages was a violent time for all Europe. There was violence and bloodshed everywhere. Why the hate

    • @bitch8205
      @bitch8205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jamespanciotti3960 I don't think ancient people enjoyed being attacked and watching their homes destroyed anymore than we enjoy it today. Violence and murder were always bad, whether there was a lot of it or a little bit of it. I agree that we shouldn't really hate the vikings nowadays, but only because it was so long ago that it just doesn't affect us
