After watching all the neat places that are not here anymore I really feel old.
Going shopping on the internet is not the same.
God I really miss the valley in the 1970s and 80s. I went back to get my degree at CSUN and ended up leaving the valley forever in 1996, when many of these places apparently went out of business. I remember shopping at Nudies with my dad . He had to have his Tony Llamas Cowboy Boots, always!! God rest his soul. I love these videos but to be honest.. Just reminds me of all the dead people I miss. No reason to go back.. You can never go home again... I live in Ecuador now. Thank you for these videos!
Ecuador?? WoW. Thats a big change. I still live in So. California but hope to move to Denver, Colorado in the near future. Denver is a time warp compared to California.. much less crowded, friendlier people, better drivers, etc.
I've read quite alot about Ecuador. I went to Uruguay 11 years ago, and in many respects it reminded me of the valley in the 1960's, and 70's. I lived in Porter Ranch, north of CSUN. Uruguay has a family intact society still, where they cherish their freedom, no road rage, great nutritious food, and people communicate with each other, and enjoy each other's company. It was like going to "another world", that different. I'm sure that you sense that about Ecuador, as well. Saludos de los EE. UU. de america, del estado de arizona!
Hard reality is that we sold out much of what we loved for some cheap savings... we were the ones who killed Main Street...

Greetings from Lima, Peru. Left California at the right time (3/2/2020) before the pandemic closed everything in California down. I love this country. Wouldn't leave it for anything. My wife and I are here next to the beach and a bird sanctuary in the Chorrillos district of Lima. Right now, the USA is a good place to be from.

I would go to Thriftys with my grandfather when he would pick up his medication from the pharmacy and we would always get a couple of icecream cones on the way out. Such fond memories.

Thanks for putting things like this up. It reminds me of a time when things weren't so screwed up. When the government wasn't so corrupt. When as a kid, you could walk down the street with very few if any worries. When you could go out and buy a house and raise a family without it costing you $5,000/month or having to take out a 60 year loan to be able to pay for it. Southern California sucks now. I hate living here and if it weren't for my job and the fact that i'm so close to retirement, I would have split 15 years ago. I can honestly say without reservation that I hate California. It's sad because there was a time not all that long ago that I loved it here.
It does suck now unless you live in a nice beach community which is way overpriced.
I used to live on the other side of the 405 freeway, just north of Roscoe Blvd. It, the freeway, actually took half of our backyard when it opened in 1963. Leo's Stereo, (formerly Muntz Stereo), and Galpin Ford pictured from 2:12-2:30, both came into being about 1965. Thanks for keeping the Valley history alive, of what I remember. I really want to see your Valley Relics Museum in it's new location, much success to you!!!
Were all those apartments near galpin houses back then? Always wondered how that area of Van Nuys and North Hills East looked like.
Not growing up out here I find the 1950's history of So. Cal. Very interesting and these old photos show a new way of living for many that moved out here during that time. Beautiful all new and perfect climate. Thank you for this post. Watch the original Highway Patrol you will see a film history of the Valley at that time. Thank you.
I got my first 4-track player out of the dumpster at Muntz. It was a great source of electronics. 😂😂😂
My mom worked at the Muntz factory further down on Roscoe. One of my friends from the ice skating rink on Calvert married Galpin's some time later.
As "Time" by The Alan Parsons Project was playing in the background it struck me that I don't think anyone in today's popular music scene could produce a sound with that feel. Words that come to mind are mellifluous, gentle, wistful, a tad ethereal. It came out of a generation that grew up when there was more time and space to distill experiences.
I would love to go back in time to just chill and enjoy the good times I had growing up, those days are gone forever, but will remain precious memories to me always
on one hand it makes me smile thinking of all those memories and on the other, I am deeply saddened that it all comes to an end. Time having only one direction stinks. but I haven't been able to change that yet :p

The Pickwick Pool! I swam there a LOT in the summer of '71 and '72.
All these wonderful memories make me sad. :( We moved out of the valley in 1982. Most stores and restaurants that were closed in the 80's now belong to Walmart and Mexican tacos. It's heartbreaking.

@@patr70 well they won’t be wrong, the SFV has become very latino (as has south central LA) and so for long time residents it’ll surely feel very different.
@@humzahj. Maybe in certain sections of certain neighborhoods.. but most of the houses and homes in the SVF are owned and lived in by 2cnd and 3rd generation of White family members. SVF is Light Years nicer then South Central Los Angeles .. One is the Inner City and one is Suburbia.. two totally different worlds
@@patr70 South central is pretty similar looking to the valley; mostly single story homes and strip malls.
Also you can google the demographics of the valley. Whilst it's still more ethnically diverse than south central, it's still more latino than white.
@@humzahj. SFV is MUCH Cleaner in a Multitude of ways compared to South Central. If you think that SVF and South Central Los Angeles are "Similiar" in any way then I won't respond anymore becuase they are two completely different worlds.

Every generation has a sadness or nostalgia at seeing the things from their past or youth that have disappeared.
Awesome. What a great video I remember most of all that was videoed. I was born and raised in the valley. Reseda Canoga park. Chatsworth from 1960 till 1987. I miss the old valley. Had some awesome times. Great Days. Hope to see more. Great video's 😎

Makes me sad too ..As I have been or seen all but one of those places from the video. I worked at broadway dept store in mid 1960's and i bought a car stero from Leo's...OH well thats life. Time marches on.

I remember all this! I miss my childhood. 😢I would go to Cafe 50s a lot and pioneer chicken. That chicken was one of the best in the world.

I'm a generation Y (aka Millennial) and I was privileged enough to have seen some of these places when I was younger. While not in this video, I do miss Fedco membership store in Van Nuys. Spent every weekend of my early childhood shopping there with my parents. Sad it's no longer there.

When 213 was all of the Valley. GM plant in full swing. Late night burgers at 50’s Cafe. Now it’s all Starbucks and homeless camps.
When the world was more innocent. Now it's a decaying world. So sad.☹🥺😥

Anybody remember Market Basket stores. There building fronts usually look like a giant hand basket. I used to shop at the one on Bellflower and Alondra blvd in the 70's.
I miss all the good place and time of 60 and 70 in Valley.
My father had a women's clothing store in Panorama City. He used to pick up Wor Wonton soup from Phil Ahn's restaurant or we'd eat there. After the store and two other women's stores were robbed my dad closed and took over his brother's store in Claremont. Panorama City went downhill fast after that when Hispanics took over the area. It became dangerous.
Phil Ahn's was a legendary place! Great food and mixed drinks there. Once they closed in 1990, PC took a nose dive.:(
Dad I grew up back in the daye when All them places were still open the s.f.v 818 is so much different now it's ducks m sad to see all the places I used to go as a kid growing up .be gone n closed down. I miss them good old days.
Thrifty Drug Stores (some if them) had a lunch counter, where you could eat. My favorite drink at the Thrifty Drug Store counter was a mix of 7Up and lime syrup...it was called "Green River".
Just a few years ago, I found out that John Fogerty of Credence Clearwater Revival liked the SAME drink, which was the inspiration for his hit record "Green River"!

We all bought our 4 track and 8 track stereos at Muntz ( Leo's )stereo shop. I put mine in my 1965 GTO. 😎👍

Not at all from this area, but my gosh it’s so emotional or progress. You do an awesome job. I’m from southeast Los Angeles (South Gate, Cudahy, Bell, Maywood and Huntington Park) and how nice if we had someone to document that areas past. It’s a changed community but always looking to make it better.
I lived in the San Fernando Valley (Burbank and North Hollywood) until 1989. I moved to Washington State, and have been here ever since. I've never had the desire to go back, as so much has changed. It's hard to see your memories destroyed. Does anyone remember Gemco or Builder's Emporium? How about Long's Drugs or the big Lankershim car wash? Thank you, I really loved the video, but it made me feel a little bit sad. I wasted so much time not enjoying my youth. How does time go by so fast? As the saying goes, if I only knew then what I know now! LOL ; )

@@vickiladu6755 I graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1978. Do you remember when Target took over all of the Gemco stores? Wow, I sure miss those days sometimes, especially around my birthday. LOL ;D
I remember them all my wife worked and managed the cosmetic department at a Gemco she was proud of her department and kept it clean and professional.
Fedco, Gemco, Kmart, Zodys. Fond memories in the 70s and early 80s as a kid.

In the "old days" as they say, lol stores like Sears or JC Penny weren't in huge malls they were stand alone stores. Dad would come home the family would get dressed up in there nice clothes, like to go out on a date, this would usually happen on a Friday evening they would then all pile into the, SUV of that time period, the family station wagon and the family would communicate we didn't have cell phones where everyone in the car has there nose buried in there phone . Then the family would go shopping! yes shopping all the whole family it was an event. The family would hit the grocery store or stores then maybe Carl's or In n Out to get a burger. The evening would continue on to maybe Sears for shoes or? then May Company for clothes. It was a family event.
Don’t forget Woolworths and Montgomery Ward.

I worked at Leo's Stereo installing car stereos, good times. Conveniently located close to Tommy's burgers (which is still there) where I would often go for my lunch break, or The Taco Tree on Sepulveda. The downside was the smell that would emanate from Busch gardens.
The Zody’s Department Store at Reseda and Devonshire Blvd. It later became a Ralphs Super Market where I worked from 1976 to 1994.
80 to 92 in the valley was the best of times
I Miss Fedco, Kmart, Gemco, Zodys, Thrifty at Van Nuys and Vanowen 3 scoops for 15 cents.
We would play football, baseball at the Vanowen Park then walk to Thrifty on Van Nuys and Vanowen and sit at the bar with french fries and a concoction of Cherry coke green river coke, suicide coke (all the flavors thrown in). This was in the 50's. Glad I grew up there. And later ( 60's) racing at San Fernando or on the unfinished freeways being built.
@@bobadams3661 I lived right around the corner from that Thrifty in the 70s. Man those were good times back then in Van Nuys. You couldn’t pay me to live there now.

@@bobadams3661 I enlisted in the Marines 18 in 1983 and was away for 4 years. I came back and have been in Orange County ever since. I would go back to see my mom in Van Nuys and it was a shit hole every where I looked. After she passed away, I’ve never stepped foot in the valley and never will. It’s a third world country now. All of California is bad and Orange County is starting to get bad too. It’s just a matter of time. I’m moving to Eagle Idaho.

Sad they got rid of drive in movies but at least I got to experience them as a high school kid in the 80's, nothing like making out for an hour and a half straight while the movie played. My car had bucket seats so I'd always take my Mom's car to the drive in cause it had a bench front seat......I don't think I have to explain why.
👍👍👍in some ways my 61 Chrysler Newport, ( complete with pushbutton transmission) was my best car! You could literally fit 6 in the back! Of course, the gas mileage was s**tty, but it didn't matter much at $1.29 a gallon!
The reason why drive-ins went away is because of rising land values.
Great to see. Now I know the name of that theater in Van Nuys: Capri where I saw a double bill MASH and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on day before Easter Sunday in 1971 with a good friend.
I remember working at the car wash on Laurel cyn across from sears ,,they filmed the move car wash there and didn't pay us for a week ,those were great days .too bad they'll never come back with all them people there ,can't even breathe there .
Will like to know of a video of Van Nuys Blvd from the Americana Theater all the way down to Burbank Blvd ,once had a Hot Rod magazine of V.N Blvd saying it was the best cruise night in the nation for 20 years ,they had Muscle cars galore,they made a movie about the street ,but it did no justice ,now back then was AMERICANA

I remember that hot rod magazine isdue..it had the layout of all the stores and showed a pucture of people at a bobs bigboy....mini trucks were big...best ones were built or from van nuys and the valley

One of the worst malls and areas in the San Fernando Valley. So ashamed that they won't clean it up!
I remember when the Panorama mall was an outdoor mall. I worked there after it was enclosed. The brother of my assistant manager was shot in the head inside the mall.
I work at that Broadway you showed at the top of this video on Roscoe and Van Nuys lantel Robinson's stores took it out and now it's a Walmart which is really sad
The San Fernando Valley in those days mirrored “Any Town USA”, today it looks like a third world country. Thanks for the memories, now go home.

Does anybody have any pictures of "The Sherman Oaks" movie theater roughly in the spot where Starbucks is now right before Noble on Ventura? I am also not finding any good photos of the Yellow Brick Road castle play area at the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park.

Back in the 1970's...1980's Buena Park CA used to have two X- rated theatre's...Pussy Cat and on the other side of town was the Club West.....I heard via TH-cam that they are no longer there! The people living in the area are now happy those seedy places are no longer there.... I was at the pussy cat one night and there was a woman and male adult star signing autographs! A lot of people were there and a funny movie " Flesh Gordon" was playing!!!
Ontario and Thousand Oaks are not in the SFV.
That used to be a place to start to build a foundation, to be near jobs. Then save for a retirement community outside the valley. Now it’s too congested with meaningless urban sprawl of which I don’t know who gives business to. So you have to fast forward into the retirement community early. Too bad on one hand. It was central for commutes in all directions for the valley and could have been cute. I think a lot of homes were torn down for massive condensed housing for apartments. The good part is getting your retirement home when you can afford it, because the area will be too expensive if you wait too long and I’ll have commutes to at least several beautiful cities versus just one major metropolis. The state has never been normal in my adult life, the only life I’ve known here.

I know nothing stays the same and the only constant is change, but California in general has changed way too much in too short a period of time. Its almost unrecognizable compared to the 70s and 80s when I was young.

It's not california anymore it's filled with people from everywhere ,I'm so glad I moved to from that shit hole .I won't even visit my family there ,it's a struggle there for regular people in that place.never seen it that bad ,it's sickening to see miles of homeless and the city authoritys don't know where the millions of dollars went .
The BROADWAY is now Walmart ! All the businesses have changed. The drive-ins are all gone. Alot of good family restaurants gone. Loved Cafe 50's . Even Hamburger Hamlet is gone ! Now when you drive through some areas. It looks like you crossed over the border. Really depressed looking area of the valley. The past........just erased.
