    How do they expect places like London to function if normal people just physically can't afford to exist there?

      Just a few families of bankers and crooks in the world are buying all the land all over the world. These families want to transform every single human being into a slave. People in Canada, Germany, England, the USA, etc., are being victims of this housing lucrative business. Privatization made rich people richer than governments because neoliberal governments are committees that manage the businesses of the rich.

    The housing crisis in the UK is probably the most serious domestic issue facing the nation. The right to buy policy was, I think, the primer for this crisis as the revenue from those sales was not reinvested in housing related projects. Unchecked immigration is also another factor (that was the working class catalyst for Brexit) and the economic system that pushes hosue prices beyond the reach of most people. As for ruthless private renters, I'm sure they sleep very well at night

      🇫🇷 Welcome ! 🇫🇷 I am so shocked and confused... I cannot understand how a country that used to be at the forefront of innovation, that invented the steam machine (James Watt), aviation (Wright Brothers) and built the first computer (Turing), and is one of the most advanced and wealthiest economy on earth cannot today even offer proper housing to its own people. What a shame ! Housing should be non-speculative ; to home owners : who cares if the value of your property increases or decreases, it is your home, you live inside, you are not going to leave anywhere soon anyway, right ? Anyway, I'm happy to live in France where working class people can still house themselves at decent prices, with reasonable tenant rights (you can only be evicted every 3 years except if you don't pay your rent ; and even in that case eviction is not that easy). I don't understand why British people don't rebel against that situation, it makes me really angry to see the testimonies of these poor people who cannot pay their rents despite having full time jobs.

    A lot of people complaining about immigration, although it is a contributing factor I don't believe it is the main factor to this crisis, the main problem is with government policy for the last 15 years of uncapped rent in the London area, the gentrification of the working class in the inner city of London, Landlords who are unregulated, New Labour or the conservatives, two sides of the same coin, don't give a toss about the working class.

    BBC housing isn't just a problem in London, its everywhere across the UK. its even harder than this if you have a specific need (wheelchair access, ground floor for limited mobility ect) houses flats act are not just more expensive but also getting smaller so they can cram more in. its really important to have a home you can live in and yet so many are without that, reliant on generosity of friends or family.

      I’m disabled and was homeless due to a life limiting illness I couldn’t work and left my dream job in nursing and spent over two years in emergency accommodation up flights of stairs because the council messed up and lost paperwork proving my disability they said I was not a priority and I then got legal help and got my priority changed and was moved into another temporary housing on ground floor but to get into the property there were a lot of steps and the property was not wheelchair accessible so I fell a lot and injured myself. I now have a home but it is riddled with damp and unsafe but it’s a roof over my head and I’m so so grateful. The emergency housing offered here in the uk is awful, budgets are wrongly spent and prioritised incorrectly leading to neglect of the homeless, some are in emergency accommodation for up to 10 years, including family, elderly, disabled, young teens... heartbreaking

    @Amy-zb6ph 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We're having that same problem in the US and I suspect it is befalling or will befall every country that tries to resurrect its budget using austerity practices. It's quite simple. If you assist the poor, they will spend that money on goods at the local store, which will help that business owner. Perhaps then, they will be able to expand the business and hire more employees or pay their own employees more money. Then, perhaps more people will be able to afford the rent. It would also help to either put controls on how high the rent can be or give people subsidies to pay their rent, the latter of which would again contribute to the economy. In any case, I suggest that everyone buy a tent when you can because you never know what life with throw you and a tent is at least a roof over your head.

    Rent control and/or maximum rent paid out. Because if u have kids and work 16 hrs a week or more and earn under £16K the council will pay the rest of your rent, free school meals etc, (if u don't work u can 'only' get £26k total benefits ie inclusive of rent+job seekers allowance + Council tax but that =£35K after tax) which is how cleaners, mini cab drivers etc can b around 2 service the rich and work for crappy wages.... ie it is a subsidy 2 the rich + business who can keep wages low, plus rents and house prices extortionately high esp in London.

    My landlord is selling the house next year and me and my boyfriend have nowhere to go I'm beyond terrified and all the council have said is to rent privately which we can't do as I'm on benefits and my boyfriend is self employed our credit is also shit, the council have said its a 7 year wait no matter what even if we get on the list they keep saying rent privately you'll be waiting forever to be housed but that's just a temporary stop gap at best they need to build more social housing its ridiculous to tell people to carry on privately renting if they can't afford it and they don't have guarantors also at some point landlords want their properties back so people up homeless again regardless 🤷‍♀️

    How did UK get to this level of poverty

    • @preparetoholdyourcolour7080

      House prices rise every single year, gentrification is getting bigger and bigger thanks to social media and all these idiots hipsters with trust funds jumping on the bandwagon, things like air bnb where people are renting out properties like hotels there's literally 3 properties in my area on air bnb one of them is a 2 bedroom flat the fkn landlord lives in the flat next door for Christ's sake, people who struggle mentally and physically are let down by the NHS who are underpaid and understaffed and so many resigned uncaring doctors for help and support so they struggle in themselves as people and to be functional to find well paid work where they have no experience, no qualifications etc they like me years ago take the jobs that were given to them but it's barely enough to get by, there are other issues as well like the benefits and system and stuff but basically things like rent and house prices will never stop going up unfortunately so poverty becomes more and more of a problem

    Sad...starting to look like the US. :( At least you all have some semblance of a healthcare system. Conservatives here in the US are about to take 20 million off healthcare here; and have plans to give all the money we've entrusted to them during our working lives, that was earmarked towards healthcare in our elder years-to Wall Street banks. Because soon to be unregulated brokers can obviously handle the trillions the Govt was supposed to be protecting-better??

    • @elaineg60
      @elaineg60 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PS I'm SURE it has NOTHING to do with the hundreds of millions the bank's donated to Republican candidates this past cycle...after all, they campaigned AGAINST all the "pay to play" they accused Democrats of. Luckily, Trump is "draining the swamp"-he may be scraping the bottom for his advisors and lobbyists, but he skimmed the surface...ok, well, except for a FEW...OK, so maybe just HALF are lobbyists and politicians, but I'm SURE he'll fine "the best, the greatest people you've ever seen, you have no idea how great these people will be...believe me!!"

    Yes of course less immigration would help, as many commenters are saying. But I think more important is getting government involvement out of the housing industry. Reduce or remove laws on planning permission which prevent developers from building new dwellings. With such restrictions on who can build what and where, it only makes sense for developers to build expensive properties to cater to the higher end of the market. If developers were able to build new flats and houses more easily they could cater to all people looking for homes. Also since government routinely subsidises poor people by helping them to pay for properties they can't afford, this removes the incentives for developers to build cheap housing - it means it makes much more sense business-wise to build expensive new properties because it doesn't matter if people can't afford them, government will just pay for it. Which of course puts a tax strain on everyone. As usual, government involvement fucks things up for everyone, especially the very people who are ostensibly being "helped". Free the markets, free the people.

    everybody work and produced for years, yet the prices keep skyrocketing. there was a time when people worked and produced so their lives become easier, not harder each day.
    soon we will be all eradicated and only the elite will occupy the megalopolis around the world. one person will have several houses to rent to those who can barely afford one. actually this already happens but will become more and more evident.

    The housing crisis isn't new just exaserbated. I was in a hostel in 94 to 95 but tourism was the cause then. Now it is investment buyers. One home each should be the rule to truly level the playing field...if there are any spare after that let the rich rip each others throats out in a bidding war to own the leftovers for a change

    The three political parties have deliberately suppressed the construction of housing in uk's cities if houses were allowed to expand upwards by two or three floors they still wouldn't be as high as the adjacent trees that are so sacred and the amount of homes in a city could potentially double. With increased supply making homes cheaper and the land they are built on more valuable.A win win result for homeowners and land owners.
