Thanks for sharing I just got our smoking going for the first time today. We are doing cheese but Meatloaf is my favorite I will look for a small tray like yours for the meat loaf to rest on.
Thanks for this!!!!! I bought a pit boss vertical and was very disappointed vs my old propane masterbuilt smoker. I call the pit boss the smoker that doesn’t smoke. But I have been using a tube with pellets in it helped big time. I never thought of putting in wood chips! Thanks a ton!
Hey Bro Thanks! Yep the Sawdust Burners suck when it comes to a True Wood Smoke flavor and smell. Wood chips are still Real Wood and will make a difference in your Que. Let me know how it worked for you. Hope You check out more of my stuff. Metal On! \🔥/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue I got some applewood chips in my pit boss right now in the smoke tube with two small bricks of cheese in there. Pit boss is powered off of course! I am excited to see how they turn out!
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue how long is your tube of chips burning for? I pack mine pretty tight and I'm getting an hour and a half with chips versus four to five with pellets. Smells great though.
Yep......that's about what I got.....maybe hour and 45. And yes there is no comparison to the smell. 😁👍 I plan to do a combo sometime.........lots of chips and a few pellets mixed in. What ya' think? 👍 \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue you're going to be disappointed in me brother. I'm putting a rotisserie in the pellet burner and I have a Char Griller Akorn kamado on the way for ribs and pork butts. I have been thinking about mixing some pellets into the chips in the tube though.
Masterpiece Theater there. I’m with you on the pellet smell. My issue with the smoke tube is when you place in a hot pit there is little to no oxygen to keep it from petering out. I have gave up on the tubes. I must be one of the 2 percenters that have issues. Metal on my friend…
Guy doesn't like the smell of pellets burning, but likes the flavor of Natural ice beer 🤢🤮 After a 6 pack of that stuff anything would taste good 🤣. I've seen it all now!
Bought my pellet grill and was immediately disappointed in the smoke flavor it imparted on the food. Using better pellets helps, Lumberjack seems best so far, but the grill still does not live up to the hype. Anxious to try the smoke tube and wood chips. I have used one to cold smoke cheese and it works great.
Hey Bill! I'm with You about the pellet grills. I even did a video one time saying "Don't Believe the Hype"!!! Trust me this works. And if You are looking for a longer smoke time......do a combo of chips and pellets. Let Me know. 👍 Metal On! \🔥/
I like the aroma and flavor of pellets. There is nothing wrong with pellets or even sawdust. It is still real wood. That said, I agree that chips, chunks and sticks give better flavor.
That is exactly what I was going to do on my brisket cook but I couldn’t find my big smoke tube, so I settled for the small one with pellets. Good to see you made it work with the small one, that’s good stuff. Metal On 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I feel like doing this after seeing it, I have only been smoking in a MasterBuilt vertical smoker…. Never was perfect with the process of adding wood chips, but just now grabbed a big PitBoss 1100 or some big model pellet grill, and while I love how it works, I also noticed the smell and flavor just wasn’t the same as woodchips. So looking to do this exact same thing, use the woodchips for 2-3 hours and then just continue cooking with the pellets till the end.
Yep! Used Chips and Chunks for years with several types of Grills/Smokers......and when I got My Traeger I was so disappointed. Experimented with all kinds of crazy ideas for that True Wood smell and flavor........because I don't care what anyone says......It's Sawdust!!! And it Sucks!!! I call them Sawdust Burners in all my Vids! LOL. This Works and You will be much happier with a Smell and Taste that You can't get from Sawdust! Thanks for checking out My Vid! Metal On! \🔥/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue I will say though, I completely forgot that one time I did tryout using pellets in my MasterBuilt smoker instead of chips and it did offer a ton of smoke and flavor, since they weren’t on fire and just smoldering like the woodchips do. Still had clouds of smoke everytime I opened up that thing to check food. So maybe they do offer good flavor but just can’t be set on fire and only be smoldering like woodchips. I only tried it once with a hickory pellet and I do remember it being far better taste in the meat… versus setting the pellets a blaze like in a Pitboss or Treager
Hey Erik! Well.......then I would recommend You doing a combination of Wood Chips and mixed in Pellets. I do this combo because what it does is get you a Longer Smolder time out of the Tube. 👍 I've been using the Charcoal pellets for this,.....just because I have them. 😁 Let Me know how it goes. Metal On! \🔥/
Well I'm certainly inspired. I converted my MES40 to a PID and got the extendable GMG Thin Blue Smoker, but wasn't really thrilled with the pellet smoke. Doing a test run with mesquite chips right now. So far so good! Thanks for the video.
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue so I had a successful rest run and 4.5 hour burn out of an 18" tube with chips the other day. Went to go ahead and fire if up this morning for a brisket but could not get them to stay lit to save my life. Ended up switching back to pellets for this round but I'm nothing if not determined.
Nice. I will try this with some mesquite chips I got a while back but never used. Love the ease of the pellet grill but wish it added more smoke to my briskets.
You may get 6 hrs with the pellets but with wood chips 2 hrs if getting buy 2 if u gonna use wood it works awesome by the way changed my smoking game big time! Ooohhh yea!
Great video, thought about buying a tube smoker, want to use on charcoal and gas grill, will the chips stay lit without air movement, sounds like that grill is roaring, with air movement, want to smoke some cheese, just didn’t know if they stay lit vs pellets burn easier. Thanks
Well ....You Don't want the chips to be burning the whole time.......You want them to Smolder. That's where you will get the best smoke. Light the chips in the tube and after about a minute blow it out so it Smolders. It should Smolder the whole time.....perfect for doing cheese. Try it....You will see........Let Me Know! \🔥/
Just got a pellet smoker and I have a vertical propane smoker the reason being is i dont have to worry bout running outta propane and around here its $25 a pop to exchange. I didnt know pellets gave less smoke which kinda sucks so I am looking for a booster.. other than that I am loving my pellet smoker soo far.
Hey Mix! Pellets don't make much smoke because they burn so clean and efficient because they are compressed sawdust. If you feel the need for more smoke.....try this method of using real wood chips in a tube. I mix wood chips and a little charcoal flavored pellets which gives a longer smoldering time in the tube. Give that a try and let me know how it works for you. 👍 Metal On! \🔥/
Nice and very informative video. Looks like that smoke tube really did the trick. I’ve even put wood chips and pellets mixed together in the same tube before. But yes you’re correct I believe in that you can’t really Get the same flavor out of pellets that you can would. Great video!
Pecan chips (Pecan anything is my favorite) in the smoke tube...brilliant idea. Ken! I thought those tubes were for pellets....but I don't have one. Worked really well and Mrs. HMB approved! Best part...smoked meatloaf sandwiches tomorrow!
Hey... give that a try Brother! You may be onto something? I now do a mix of the wood chips and some charcoal flavored pellets in the tube. The pellets seem to make the smolder longer. 👍 Metal On My Friend! \🔥/
This seems like the best method outside of buying a diffuser that you can put chunks in. And those are spendy. I’m thinking Pecan and fruit woods are probably best to use too, since it’s more of a dirty smolder than a clean burn. Hickory and mesquite would probably be too overpowering at a smoldering burn. I’m going to do some ribs on the old pellet pit this weekend. Gonna mix charcoal and hickory pellets and put apple chips in the tubulator.
Hey Christian Thanks for checking out My Vid! 👍 You are exactly Right! Do it and You will see how much better it is. 👍 Because this is now smoldering Real Wood.....Not Sawdust. I also use this method in my Gasser Pit when smoking low n slow. 👍 Let Me know how it turned out for You. Metal On! \🔥/
HAHAHA, so true about the sawdust (pellets). I do have a pellet smoker, it's my option C for a lot of things, but for some things, it is pretty good. I knew it was made of sawdust, but the way you said it made me laugh, and create a Homer Simpson moment Duh!
I believe I See Paradise by the Dashboard Lights with this meatloaf! I’ve been wanting to try wood chips in my smoking tube, now you showed us that it is a must try! Awesome job Mr HMB !
I'de be really careful......those tubes are Super Hot!!! For longer cooks I use a combo of the chips and a some charcoal flavored pellets......that combo will last longer for you. 👍 Metal On! \🔥/
PeKaan PeKan. lol You put on a smoke show. I liked and appreciated Francesco's question. I think using the wood chips must be a better application. Funny, everyone already does it in some form or fashion using chips and chunks. The meat loaf turned out nice. Had a subtle smoke ring. That's all you need if you want it. The Mrs HMB said it just right. Not smokey, but flavorful. Nice cook Ken. Smoke On.
Yep.......I've been resisting buying one of these Tubes. Thought I would make one or something that resembled it......but I gave In and bought it. I knew I wasn't going to be using pellets in the pellet grill......kind of redundant.....don't you think?!?! :-) When You get a Pellet Grill You will know what I'm talking about with that smell of the burning pellets.......it's not the same as burning wood. Thanks for checking it out.....and I'll be looking for that New Pellet Grill of Yours! ;-)
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue Going to give the wood chips tube a try on the next cook. If I like it and end up using it in a video do you mind if I give you a shout out for the inspiration?
No problem my friend! 👍 When you get a chance, check out my latest video where I burn charcoal in my pellet grill! Not recommended....but I did it! 😁 \m/
Just got a new pit boss austin xl, never used a pellet grill before, have owned a mes eletric and propane verticals and made good smokes on them. I do alot of smoked fish for dip. I was caught of gaurd with the pellet grill not being able to produce that smoke flavor i desire. Going to try this, thanks for putting out the great content!
Not sure if your smoke tube has the same dimensions as mine but I found that one of those cheap mason jar funnels is perfect for funneling stuff into them, the ID of the funnel is about the same as the OD of my tube so I can attach it snugly to it.
There you go! I have a tube like that but havn't tried it with woodchips.. That meatloaf looks great indeed! Love that retro-slicer you use.. Cheers Ken!
Very nice cookup! The wood chips in the smoke tube is a great innovation, I haven't seen that. And you used the Rocky Horror "Would you like another slice?" knife of great danger. Good job.
Shoot, I'm convinced. My tube just came and I was going to buy some pellets. But with a half a dozen bags of chips already in the garage for the offset, I'm going to try this instead. Those pellets are spendy! Maybe I'll scrunch the chips some inside a piece of pipe with a metal rod a little first instead of pounding on the new tube. Heeheehee, love the humor.
Ken my good friend, good idea, i do something like this sometimes, i use a flex clothes dryer vent as it will handle indirect heat, hey, it works, lol.
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue your welcome my good friend, plus instead of pellets, i can put my hickory/applewood logs in a fire box along side 1 of my smokers, run the dryer flex hose( is appx. 3 1/2 to 4 " in diameter) from the the fire box to the side of 1 vent of my upright king kooker ( almost fits perfect) & smoke indirect that way. Hey, like i said, it works, i will lose a little smoke but not heat out of the fire box, but for me, hickory & applewood are free with so much here, just have to cut/split it. btw, i have a good friend who bought a smoker, don't remember the manufacturer name, but it uses compressed wood discs, any experience with one of those? , he says it is great & is digital to control desired temp on the smoker, have a great day my good friend
My chips didn't want to blow out. I finally got them to blow out and then they would relight with a light gust sometimes when I'd open the grill to turn the meat.
Sorry haven't had that issue. I've also done a combo of wood chips and charcoal flavored pellets to get a longer smoldering time. Try that and let me know how it worked for You. Metal On! \🔥/
I'll give that a try. I did try pellet with wood chips and was able to blow it out easier however. I think with only wood chips there is too much space for air.
Now I see. You need to get a stick or something and really pack them down in tight. In my video I'm using a sharpening steel to compact the chips. Jam 'em in there bro!
I use wood chips in my smoke tube too. I even have a couple videos smoking salt with chips in the smoke tube. So.. “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth”. Good video Ken. And yes nice MEATLOAF.
Also glad you pronounce “pecan” correctly. I see so many others say it another way, and I think you better keep your “pee-can” away from my barbecue pit. That’s just unsanitary , go dump that “pee-can” in the out house.
My favorite Pyrotechnichian, since your self proclaimed pellet grill master with 5 years under your belt. Im curios with similar timed cooks what is more economical pellets or charcoal bullseye 🎯 vs weber kettle. Interesting use of fire tube. I see in several videos people with pellet smokers have them in there pit. I wanted to experiment with tube on kettle and weber genesis. I wanted to see what kind of cue you can make with pellet tube. So far I dont believe I have had a piece of over smoked meat. I got the 12” tube was debating over 6” tube or 5x8 tray. I believe the pellets are traeger hickory, maple, cherry. Meatloaf looked great. Looking forward to more content. \M/ on
Wow.......what an honor,....your favorite? Thanks my Brother in Que! :-) If You have a Pellet Grill.......You know what I'm talking about with that smell......it's not the same as real wood chips. But I am thinking about using a combo of chips and pellets in the Tube, just to mess with people. :-) \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue no pellet grill I just had cheap gassers till 2016 bought weber Genesis. I retired in 2015, I happened to see offset smoker down in Ark were I had bought some property, that led to weber kettle and putting together a wsm 22 that is a miiror image to PIFs . That I bought more assecories for its on my to do list this year. To many options with these two. It seems like many youtubers have the pellet grills, after checking around I like the Gorilla Silverback. The couple Tom Horsman has look acceptable and rec tec 700 for more space. I know you check in at the Bbq Freaks I really like his 24x50 he had. Im a realist I like the Idea but in al actuality I wouldnt use it much, me and my parrot can survive on the kettle alone. My problem I like a few cookers but I dont have channel so when you think about it that kettle with the right accessories is pretty amazing. I want to experiment with the genesis and the smoke tube, I thought you were reading my mind, I ordered it and some traeger pellets I think they are mixture of cherry hickory and maple. Along with some pink butcher paper have to equipt yourself early. One reason I like the pellet grills is with right rack system you could make alot of jerky. I think I would have to experiment more with wsm smoke tube small snake. Looking forward to what you will be testing next.\m/ 🤘

First video I have watched since the visit I believe. Like I said, everything is viewed differently now like I am standing there with you and Mrs HMB. I made a mistake when I visited. I didn't play with the electric knife lol.
Yes sir I agree 100%. The pellets usually burn to quick for me. SAWDUST!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Sorry I am behind watching. My health has got me down and haven't been able to video either.
Hey Scott! All Good....everyone is hit with some illness lately. YT aint going anywhere......we'll be watching when your back! 👍 Yeah.....Sawdust! LLLLLL.
Hey TJ! Yes...... this Is The Method to use with a pellet grill. Use real wood chips and if You are looking for a longer smoldering smoke time mix in some charcoal flavored pellets. But TBH......You will get that True Wood Smoke Smell and Flavor from using Wood Chips.........not sawdust. Listen..... I will tell You that Pellets/Sawdust burn so hot and fast which is a "Clean" burn that everyone wants in a True Stick Burner. But these pellet grills burn too clean...IMO. But who am I and what do I know. You experiment and let Me know Your findings. Que and Metal On!!! \🔥/
Great video that addresses and answers a VERY common question. How long would you say you can get out of a tube with wood chips (understanding that some wood chips will burn faster than others)?
Hey Thanks! With just chips almost two hours. I've gone to a combo of mostly chips with a few pellets mixed in, that will get you almost four hours of smoldering smoke. Of course there are many variables.....experiment and see what works for you. 👍 Stay in touch and I hope you find time to check out more of my stuff. Metal On! \🔥/
It is sawdust plain and simple. Im going to send this to my bro in law. It may help him with his decision on a purchase. He doesnt like the lack of flavor with his pellet smoker either.
Hey D! I finally tried the smoked cheese I had made two weeks ago. I only smoked it with chips for 1hour and 40 minutes. It was plenty smokey let me tell you! They recommend 4 hours with pellets, I mean sawdust! LLLL. Sawdust Sucks! \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue see that is as good of an endorsement as anything else. That technology was promising but it has some flaws. Im super excites about this gravity charcoal smoker from masterbuilt. At least the bigger version that should be debuting soon.
Hey D! That thing Rocks! 🤘 I could have sooo much fun with that! LLLLL Cool...they have a bigger version already? I didn't know that...........I'll be keeping an eye out on this one! 👍 It's funny ...I had my hands on one at WM a month ago.........but I didn't like the size of the cook chamber. Metal On! \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue i heard about the new version from a fellow YTer that you know. I saw your comment on his page about 3 months ago. I just stumbled onto his page due to the mb 560. In the vid he said they would be dropping a bigger one so I left a comment asking when. He said he heard it was supposed to be around April. Only a couple hundred more. It may delay with all that is happening. I believe it will be just over 1k of cooking space. So in your opinion the cooking chamber on the 560 is probably as small as I am guessing it is? Are there ways to smoke on that bottom grate normally used for searing? I havent gotten to see one in person yet. I was literally 1 min away from ordering on Amazon until i heard about the bigger size. I may still look into the insulated vertical that you have tho
Hey D! Thanks for all that info. Well...... I don't recommend trying to "smoke" on this pit or any Pit... grill/smoker on that bottom grate. It's too close to that heat shield which is radiating heat and will burn the meat. I always try to smoke on the Top or elevated rack and with a pellet grill I recommend always using a water pan. The Vertical cabinet is nice because it's very fuel efficient and it's Tall. No bending down for a tall guy like me. :-) But...it's the same tasting Que as your Kamado and all the other oxygen deprived style of Pits. You Know as well as I.......nothing beats that Clean Burn Wood Fired Pit! 🔥👍🤘
What's Your point Norman? People aren't stupid......they know what wood is and what sawdust is. The taste and smell of a Wood Split and the taste and smell of Sawdust pellets is Not the same! Sorry My Friend if You have an interest in the Sawdust industry, but it doesn't make for great BBQ. It's ok.......but not Great. Don't believe the Hype! Metal On My Brother! \🔥/
Thanks! No pan necessary, it's up to you. You should get over an hour with just chips, but try a combo of chips along with charcoal flavored pellets, you will get three hours of good smoke. Check out my Vid Beef Ribs in the Weber 3200 gas grill, I use this method. 👍
While I don't have your issue with the aroma of pellets (and if you hate it so much, why have you been using pellet grills for 5 years?), but I think this is a great idea. I have used the smoke time with pellets for years to get some extra smoke, but using chips will give an additional flavor profile. Thanks for the idea!
Good question?!?!........LLLLL. Just trying to find what works for me, even if it's using a Pellet Grill. I believe Pellet Pits have their place in everyones backyard arsenal. It's not the "be all..... end all"......but it has it's place. Yes.....give the chips a try and let me know your findings. 👍 Metal On My Friend! \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue So I tried it tonight. Really good results. The ribs were smokier and the smoke flavor was more complex and, for lack of a better word, smoother. I think I can safely say. that my smoke tube will be filled with various real wood chips on all future pellet grill cooks. It is, as you say, just one tool in my arsenal, but I know how to use it just a little better now when I decide that's the one I want to fire up.
Dave.......you put a smile on my face! This comment makes all of my work worth while. To hear I may have helped someone make better Que today than the day before. That's all we're trying to do....is make better Que! 👍 Thanks for watching My Friend! And......Smoke On!!! 👍
Good question! I got my first pellet grill over five years ago because I believed the Hype on them. Soon found it was all a lie. Bought the Rec Tec Bullseye because it's more of a grill than a smoker. Hope You find time to check out more of stuff. You may see stuff never done before. 😁👍
Hey Ken. Nicely done. Question though. Isn’t the smoldering smoke not a “clean” burn? Why does this work but you shoot for the clear smoke on a stick burner?
:-) You are paying attention My Friend! 👍 Yes......but we are talking about a very small amount of smoldering chips/wood. When using a "Stick Burner"... it's burning large splits at complete combustion for that "Clean Burn"! :-) 🔥👍 Metal On! \m/
I went through the same thing and I don't think people are being honest. (just old sawdust smell). I got so mad I put a smoker box in my pellet grilla grill with charcoal and wet wood chips. I had to turn up the thermostat to cleanup so much smoke and it messed with pellet grill internal thermometer a little but I thought I got my hamburger off an offset smoker. It was good finally , I have not tried tube with wood yet, so I order one. OTHERWISE ONE SHOULD JUST COOK IN AN OVEN. SO THANKS
Just the video I was looking for with my pellet smoker. Agree with the differences with smoke of wood vs sawdust. Question: Does you smoker heat with pellets, so you did have some pellet smoke? Question: My pellet grill heats with pellets. I could try the charcoal pellets, whatever they are. Then use the wood chips/chunks. Question: Did you have to soak the wood chips? I'm using this method this week. Thank
Great Question my friend! First....I've never tried those charcoal pellets yet.......I hope to someday to see for myself if they have that charcoal taste and smell. No!........Do Not soak the chips! I've gotten over an hour and a half of Smoldering Chips in this tube. You can reload if you find it necessary. Let me know your results......Stay in touch! 👍
I know Pit Boss makes a charcoal pellet, to use for open flame grilling, when you prefer not to have a wood smoke flavor. Considering the claim to make their wood pellets from nothing but hardwood, don't know if these pellets are made from charcoal? Then again im wondering how wood pellets made from nothing but hardwood ( sawdust ) hold together in a pellet shape with a shiny exterior? Some type of binder as a glue has to be in there.
I own a factory with a maintenance shop, with some talented fab guys. We already built a trailer size offset smoker years ago for company cooks. My idea is to build a product very similar to a pellet grill, but have it replace pellets for wood chips. May need to make the chips a different size, and will modify the burn pot and auger. However I don't see why this can't be accomplished. Will still have the semi automatic feeding of fuel and smoke, but without pellets, which we all seem to agree are not natural, and make the process a little fake. Another issue is the pellets do not provide as much smoke at higher temps. It can be done. What do you think?
I like it and I agree......it can be done. 👍 I'de use an auger and fire pot set up similar to the idea Grilla Grillz uses on their Grilla Pit. The pellets are fed through the auger then the pellets drop down a slide and into the fire pot. This prevents any type of burn back that can happen when the auger feeds directly into the fire pot. I do think Chips burning at complete combustion, just like a true stick burner Pit, operated with proper fire management and having that "Clean Burn" will have better tasting BBQ! 🔥👍 I had a viewer who was asking me about making a Pit that had an automated feeder of wood chunks or splits........You know..... I never gave the thought about using Chips? Sir......You got a Great Idea here! 😁 I'll tell You.... I get my splits from a tree service that cuts and Kiln dries their wood for restaurants and BBQ guys. I'm guessing if they can chip it and then some way Kiln dry the drips it would be ready to use. A question I have is the price for enough wood chips to run this Hybrid stick burner? But then again, this might not be an issue. Stay in touch! My name is Ken
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue I'll look at the Grilla Grillz design for further research. This auto wood chip smoker should be doable. The pellet system with auger is no doubt easier to control the heat, although I read some large fluctuations from time to time. 1. I don't think wood chunks made to size would be a cost issue. We have some processing euipment that could be modified for this and operate at high volumes . 2. Disbursing the chips with a type of elevator or conveyor, also not an issue 3. Heat control will be the main issue I believe. One idea is from a guy who make a more traditional wood fired offset smoker.. He manually loaded the wood, however he had a portable controller that monitored the pit temp. That's nothing new. However he did much less work by building a controller that automatically modulated a fan on and off as the controller needed to stay in the temp range he set it at. If a controller was built that would call for more wood chips, and or more air by an electric fan, this could be it. These PLC's are cheap, and I have program writers for the code, and language. Summary; Many of us backyard smokers like to smoke for 10 hours plus, and need to keep the heat where it should be. I''ve stayed up all night with a propane smoker, as we all have. Now after a few hours of smoke we take it inside into the oven, which is ok but it's not real pit cooked ,and the house smells quite a while. The best option are pellets, and it just isn't the same as real wood. Thats how I look at it and perhaps you and others do also. Where are you located? Let me know your thoughts.
Are you convinced and satisfied with the smokiness attained by this method? I am yet to try but asking as you don't seem to have used it in your subsequent videos.
Yes I am! It's so much better than just using pellets. Not sure what videos you have watched, but yes I have used it several times. And as a matter of fact.......the Last Video I posted was me using this SmokeTube with a combo of Wood Chips and Charcoal flavored pellets mixed together. Everything I do and say is documented.......You just have to look! I don't push or Promote or Ask for anything here. I only document my experiences. Look and You will find it! Metal On My Friend! \m/
Hey man can I make a foil packet with the chips instead of the tube? I just used my grill yesterday and coming from an offset stick burner and even a vertical smoker using chips there is a big difference.
Well.... Hell Yeah Man! That and anything that will hold Smoldering Chips will work! We all know Sawdust Burners Suck.....so why not add some smoldering real wood to the set up! Metal On My Friend! 👍 Hope You can check out more of my stuff! 👍 \m/
I wouldn't say "dirtier". I would say a better more natural wood smoke smell and taste. Way better than smoldering Sawdust. Thanks for checking out my Vid! \🔥/
\m/ Nice use of the smoke tube! I would not have thought of loading it with wood chips, but it totally makes sense. Why use pellets if you can use real wood? Metal on!
Great video, I own a Traeger Pellet smoker and looking for more smoke flavor. The smoking tube in a pellet smoker if you use wood chips do they continue to burn or smolder out?
I had a Traeger Lil Tex. Did a lot of great cooks and Videos with that pit. You want smoldering with this small amount of wood chips. A small amount of burning chips won't impart a smoke flavor. When using a True Wood burning Pit You want a clean burning fire because you are burning a lot of wood. When using a Pellet grill that is already burning Clean, you want a small amount of Smoldering chips. Using a Charcoal pit you want a small amount of smoldering chips or chunks. So there you have it! Good Luck and Smoke On!
Good point! At first I believed the Hype! Had that Traeger with the craziest temp swings and got rid of it. The Bullseye is cool because of it's possibilities, and I've shown all the different set ups imaginable. But when I use it as a "Smoker" I'm using a smoke tube loaded with Wood Chips for that true wood smoke smell and taste. Metal On! \m/
Well....I would ask if You have ever tried using smoldering Real Wood Chips in your pellet grill environment? No matter how much you spend......smoldering Sawdust will Never have the Taste and Smell of True Wood Chips. Just Try It!!! Thanks for checking out My Vid! Metal On! \🔥/
I fully agree that there is no point in creating smoke from something that has already no flavour. Pellet grills create tons of smoke, far more than stick burner, but there is still no flavour coz pellets are inherently weak.
Thanks for sharing I just got our smoking going for the first time today. We are doing cheese but Meatloaf is my favorite I will look for a small tray like yours for the meat loaf to rest on.

You know it! It works! 👍 \m/
I plan to do a combo sometime.........lots of chips and a few pellets mixed in.
@@jwamerica84 Not at all........sounds like a great idea! Wish You had a channel to show it! 👍
Masterpiece Theater there. I’m with you on the pellet smell. My issue with the smoke tube is when you place in a hot pit there is little to no oxygen to keep it from petering out. I have gave up on the tubes. I must be one of the 2 percenters that have issues. Metal on my friend…
You are right.....it may snuff out sometimes. I just hit it with the torch again. 🔥👍 My new Vid is for You and True Metal Fans! 🤘
You need too get a quarter of the tube in ash. Let the hot coals build up. I know this helped me as most say 10minutes and did not work. Shoot for 20
Guy doesn't like the smell of pellets burning, but likes the flavor of Natural ice beer 🤢🤮 After a 6 pack of that stuff anything would taste good 🤣. I've seen it all now!
😂😂
Heck ya brother! I agree wood all day! Looks good! I have the same pecan, but big chunks! Have a good week!
Yep......way better than sawdust! :-) I got the chunks too.......my favorite! 👍 🍺 \m/
Thanks so much for checking out my Vid! And I guess that's what I'm saying too......Chips,chunks,splits are better. 👍 Metal On! \🔥/
That is exactly what I was going to do on my brisket cook but I couldn’t find my big smoke tube, so I settled for the small one with pellets. Good to see you made it work with the small one, that’s good stuff. Metal On 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Definitely better with chips! 👍 \m/
Experimented with
all kinds of crazy ideas for that True Wood smell and flavor........because I don't care what anyone says......It's Sawdust!!!
Metal On! \🔥/
I use a combination of pellets and chips. Works great.
Simple, but a GREAT idea!!!
Thank you!
This is the way to go! Everyone is doing this method now.
Tried it out today with wood chips worked great smoked for 4 hours I am going to add another tube though
Sounds great! Glad I could help! 👍😁
I just use a fine wood chips in a tube on a gas grill and works good just have to fill a bit more
Awesome! 👍 That's way better that sawdust pellets. Thanks for checking out my Vid! Metal On! \🔥/
Nice experiment, I bought a smoke tube last summer and haven't used it yet. I need to use it in my charcoal grill and see how good it works.
You'll like it! \m/
Well I'm certainly inspired. I converted my MES40 to a PID and got the extendable GMG Thin Blue Smoker, but wasn't really thrilled with the pellet smoke. Doing a test run with mesquite chips right now. So far so good! Thanks for the video.
I believe You will like this better that smoldering sawdust. Chips is the way to go! 👍 \m/
This Works! 👍
👍 Metal On! \🔥/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue will definately do that since i use and have woodchips for my vertical smoker 👍

Dude thank you! Great idea
Nice and very informative video. Looks like that smoke tube really did the trick. I’ve even put wood chips and pellets mixed together in the same tube before. But yes you’re correct I believe in that you can’t really Get the same flavor out of pellets that you can would. Great video!
Hey Hobie! Thanks.....I'll try a combo next time. 👍
I use both also....mostly wood chips though. I use the pellets as more as a filler so I don't have to jam the wood chips in.
For charcoal and propane grills you don't need to pre-burn the wood chips. The heat from the flames will do the job for you.
I was wondering was that necessary thanks
Pecan chips (Pecan anything is my favorite) in the smoke tube...brilliant idea. Ken! I thought those tubes were for pellets....but I don't have one. Worked really well and Mrs. HMB approved! Best part...smoked meatloaf sandwiches tomorrow!
Pee-CAN...not Pee-CON. Sorry I had to. 🙉
Thanks Rob! Pecan is my definite favorite! And Yes..... that's whats for my lunches! 👍 \m/
I was thinking of doing this too but using a small incense charcoal puck to keep it smoldering
Hey... give that a try Brother! You may be onto something? I now do a mix of the wood chips and some charcoal
flavored pellets in the tube.
Because this is now smoldering Real Wood.....Not Sawdust. I also use this method in my Gasser Pit when smoking low n slow. 👍
Let Me know how it turned out for You. Metal On! \🔥/
HAHAHA, so true about the sawdust (pellets). I do have a pellet smoker, it's my option C for a lot of things, but for some things, it is pretty good. I knew it was made of sawdust, but the way you said it made me laugh, and create a Homer Simpson moment Duh!

Could you add more wood chips in the tube if you needed more time if smoke. I have a smaller tube but this idea you gave is genius. 🤘🏻

The Mrs HMB said it just right. Not smokey, but flavorful. Nice cook Ken. Smoke On.
Yep.......I've been resisting buying one of these Tubes. Thought I would make one or something that resembled it......but I gave In and bought it.

:-) I like it Steve.....I may try that method one day! 👍 Thanks My Friend! \m/
I think with only wood chips there is too much space for air.

compact the chips. Jam 'em in there bro!

I always try to smoke on the Top or elevated rack and with
a pellet grill I recommend always using a water pan. The Vertical cabinet is nice because it's very fuel efficient and it's Tall. No bending
down for a tall guy like me. :-) But...it's the same tasting Que as your Kamado and all the other oxygen deprived style of Pits.
You Know as well as I.......nothing beats that Clean Burn Wood Fired Pit! 🔥👍🤘

I'de use an auger and fire pot set up similar to the idea Grilla Grillz uses on their Grilla Pit.
I had a viewer who was asking me about making a Pit that had an automated feeder of wood chunks or splits........You know.....
I never gave the thought about using Chips?
Sir......You got a Great Idea here! 😁
I'll tell You....
2. Disbursing the chips with a type of elevator or conveyor, also not an issue
And as a matter of fact.......the Last Video I posted was me using this SmokeTube with a combo of Wood Chips and Charcoal flavored
pellets mixed together.
Idk why it seems tube with chips be a dirtier smoke?
I wouldn't say "dirtier". I would say a better more natural wood smoke smell and taste. Way better than smoldering Sawdust.
Thanks for checking out my Vid! \🔥/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue for sure, I wanna try this. Just wondered. Happy smokin
Did you like this more than filling it with pellets? I want to try this!
The smoldering chips are way better.....You will see and like it too! 👍
Two words..... meatloaf sammies! 😬yummy
Yep!......for my lunches!!! 👍 \m/
You a Tuber now! lol
LLLL. Yep......finally a Tuber! :-)
You should try Standup.
Are You really Rod Sterling's Grandson?
No, just a stupid screen name lol
Like a chainsaw through butter.
You know it! 💪 \🔥/
Get a piece of cardboard and make a “v” funnel by folding it up like a taco. Make it a lot easier.
Hey Thanks for that suggestion! Great idea! 👍 \m/
\m/ Nice use of the smoke tube! I would not have thought of loading it with wood chips, but it totally makes sense. Why use pellets if you can use real wood? Metal on!
Yep....so much better! 👍 Real Wood! \m/
Chips will last only about an hour and a half or so. Pellets will last about five hours. Even so Ken is right, wood chips produce better smoke flavor.
If you could go back in time would you save your money and not buy the smoker and just get the smoke tube?
Interesting thought! No...I would still have all of the pits! 😁👍🔥🍺 \m/
Dont look like u wet the chips I will try this on my pellet
No.....Do Not wet the chips! This works......I guarantee it! 👍 Let me know. \m/
@@HeavyMetalBarBQue Hey thank you!
Great video!! So you do not have to soak the chips first?
Thanks! Definitely do Not soak them! Let me know how it was! \m/
Everything came out perfect. Thanks again
The electric knife is killing me…
....but everyone loves that knife?!?!
If you hate the smell of sawdust.....uh, I mean pellets, why have you been using pellet grills for 5 years?
Good point! At first I believed the Hype! Had that Traeger with the craziest temp swings and got rid of it. The Bullseye is cool because of it's possibilities, and I've shown all the different set ups
imaginable. But when I use it as a "Smoker" I'm using a smoke tube loaded with Wood Chips for that true wood smoke smell and taste. Metal On! \m/
Looks good! 😂 sawdust!
Yep.....Sawdust! LLLLL 👍
😅
Background noise is loud
You can skip the first 2:00. No info, just keeps referring to pellets as sawdust, yeah we know guy.
Well that's what you get if you're gonna buy the cheap shit 🤦🏼
Well....I would ask if You have ever tried using smoldering Real Wood Chips in your pellet grill environment? No matter how much you spend......smoldering Sawdust will Never have the Taste and Smell of True Wood Chips. Just Try It!!!
Thanks for checking out My Vid! Metal On! \🔥/
@HeavyMetalBarBQue oh pellet, nah I have real grills. That burn lump and wood.
I'm trying to absorb your knowledge but the can of Natural Ice is acting like a barrier to any logical thought.
😁 Sorry......but it's what I like. 👍🍺 Metal On! \🔥/
All that for meatloaf??? Hilarious
That's Right.......Heavy Metal Style!!!! \🔥/
No one should listen to this guy
Now Why would You say that? Have You Tried this?????..........
I fully agree that there is no point in creating smoke from something that has already no flavour. Pellet grills create tons of smoke, far more than stick burner, but there is still no flavour coz pellets are inherently weak.
