Preston, really appreciate your calm voice and the recognition that you don't have to keep up a constant patter. The silence between your instructions is perfect...the actions in the video speak for themselves. Well done!
SOOOOOO YOUR SECRET IS OUT!!!!!! A MAGIC SHOE BRUSH AND CREAMS LEFT BEHIND BY A TRAVELING VAGABOND! Your Grandfather was good to him, so he left him the magic brush and creams. They were left to a good man of good deeds. Now passed down to you. Congratulations on inheriting such a treasure.
Seiko -> grand seiko #1 show of people that really appreciate quality and craftsmanship over anything else. Perfect match for someone spending hours cleaning and restoring high quality shoes!
I bought a vintage Seiko from my local thrift store for $5. Looks like new and works perfectly. The deals are out there if you look for them. Now I can look like a million bucks on a 7-11 budget
It's just a little technique. See how few products are needed overall, a cloth and brush to apply. Saphir brand renovateur and cream polish are not that expensive. A few layers rubbed in will get that shine.

I have a shoe box and brush that belong to my grandpa from 1960’s that is exactly like this one. My mom and dad gave it to him for Christmas one year. I remembered I had it in storage. Going this week to get it and start using it. Ordering Saphir from Amazon this week. Me and a friend sell used shoes on eBay that we get at thrift stores and clean up. Got a pair of shoe tress for $6 and a pair of Allen Edmond’s for $3.99 at American Thrift store today. Going to be a fun project to restore them. These videos have opened doors for us. Thanks for what you do.
Like the idea of cutting up cotton shirts. One other method I might suggest is old bed sheets. I had a set of 100% cotton flannel bed sheets that had gotten enough use as bed sheets. So I then just cut it into strips and found a new purpose for them. Has worked out well so far.
I am so glad you mention your brush...I love to shine my shoes, my brush is a family heirloom and best guess, it's about 120 years old...I got it from my Father, who got it from his...Tradition and connection...Love your video
HI, PRESTON!!! This video came just in time, as I'm about to try to get back into shining shoes! Had my surgery, got no legs now, but just because I don't wear shoes doesn't mean I can't learn all I can from you, Steve @ Bedo's, and Kirby! You 3 are my faves, you know? I'll take what I already knew, and what I've learned, and really try to get out there and shine some shoes! 😍
Preston, your quick tutorial on how to wrap that rag around your fingers and where you got the rag is a mystery that has now been solved. I know simple things like this may seem inconsequential to other people, but for people like myself who want to learn how to do these things, it is just another piece of the big puzzle. Thank you.
Finally someone who is not afraid to use some good saddle soap on his precious shoes. In Mexico we call this one jabón de calabaza. "Pumpkin soap" great stuff, overly underrated.
👍Yay!! I finally found the video where you demonstrate how to tie the cloth around your two fingers!!! Thank you!!! I’m so excited to do my classic everyday Christian Louboutin pumps and ankle boots this weekend!! 🤗
It's great that you also showed how you wrap the cotton around your fingers, I just couldn't figure it out before. Just recently I've begun shining my shoes and really taking the time to take care of them inspired by your videos, so thank you!
Thanks for demonstrating how to wrap fingers with the polishing cloth (and the fact I don't need some special towel!), I've seen other videos with people with similarly wrapped fingers but never knew how to do it (trick is that 'twist'). Got a new sub.
Thanks for detailed video and I now want to transition to saphir. I use my dads old shoe box and brushes that he used to use when he was in Mexico shining shoes and I am glad he had passed down his knowledge to me. I also enjoy watching your videos because it has improved my skills dramatically! Once again thanks for this awesome video
I'm so happy I found your video. I bought the exact same products yesterday and even though the seller gave me a lot of info I still needed some clarifications.
Your videography and presentation are perfect! Thank you for the tutorial. One thing I'd be curious about is how often do you go through these steps for a pair of shoes, let's say, for a pair of oxfords that you wear 5 days a week to the office. I didn't know about the importance of the conditioning step until just recently. I'd like to treat my shoes right going forward.
Alright, I have to gush for a second, and that takes a lot from me... Preston, whether here or on AE Enthusiasts your guidance is awesome and your patience and skill are unsurpassed. I can't wait to say I knew him when. Thanks for the great content and look forward to all your videos
You do fantastic work. I would definitely pay you to shine my shoes. I also have a shinebox with horsehair brush. I don't buy leather soled shoes anymore because I spend a lot of time on my feet. I do still buy quality shoes and shine them. I have always used kiwi products, but you are for sure getting better results with what you use. Keep up the good work!
I've used Kiwi for ages until I learned they use synthetic turpentine which ins't the best for leather, switched to Red Moose (it's fine) and beginning to transition to Saphir (it's more expensive but justified given the cost of quality footwear).
Thank you for your videos. I started shoe shining with your videos and your recommended products. I have never had such success in shoe shing before. Saphire renovator is something unbelievable
I am seeing a resurgence in dress shoes. I am restoring my Johnston & Murphy as a gift to my son. The older shoes are made in USA and top quality compared to what you buy today.
Great video. I have some questions. First : how often do i need to do the process in a month ? Do i need to use a conditioner every time i shine the shoes ? Do i need to take off the shoe polish before i shine them again and how do i remove it ? Sry for my bad english :)
I found one at the Humane Society thrift store. It was old then (25 years ago), but still does an excellent job. Love it. No one around me shines shoes anymore. I just like owning it.
Great video, I were looking how to restore the colour of my 70$ shoes, the products that you showed in the video are great but if I buy them it will cost more then my shoes probably I will just buy another shoes. But I have to admit you are very talented.
Excellent video!!! QQ: Can I skip the leather conditioner and go straight to using the cream polish? Because the cream polish conditions the leather as well, right?
Thanks so much for making this video. I have been debating purchasing a pair of Bond Street from AE in this exact colour, so this was really useful to see exactly how they would look with a nice shine. Got a few questions if you have time to respond: 1. How long did it take you to bring out that mirror shine from scratch on a fresh pair of shoes? 2. How often would you recommend completely pulling off old polish and starting a shine from scratch? 3. As a follow-up to 2, how often does calf need to be conditioned and rehydrated with something like renovateur? Thanks again!
Hello! Really love your videos! Anyway, im starting to build my shoe shine kit (starting with renovateur and creme 1925, u actually inspired me to buy), now my question is, what does a weekly maintenance shine routine entail? Does it always include the saddle soap then renovateur then creme then wax? Or should it just be brush, then renovateur then creme?
It largely depends on how much use/abuse you're subjecting your footwear; work boots are going to have a lot more dirt/grime than dress shoes worn in an office. Sounds like your shoes are mainly in an office environment, so daily brushing should be part of your daily dressing routine. Polish on a weekend day and condition monthly. If you want that high gloss shine, have at it but as long as your shoes are brushed daily and not subjected to dirt/grime, brushing daily really keeps them in shape.
Preston, can you talk about the color choices for cream and wax? I know black for black but do I need all different shades of brown or can I cheat a bit with the natural or med brown?

Hi Preston! love your Vids so much! I got 3 colored shoes (black, dark brown, and burgundy) what color of polish do you suggest? I already got neutral saphir shoes creme and polish, should I buy creme and polish for each shoes?
Maybe you can help with a few things that still baffle me: 1) How do you wrap the cloth around your fingers tightly, 2) Does it not matter that the horsehair brush you use gathers all different color polishes and creams when switching between shoes? I've always thought I needed a new brush for each color
You can use a new brush per color but black and brown is sufficient. I show in this video how to wrap the cloth around your fingers. Don’t use too much pressure or your fingers will turn purple.

Great videos. Very informative but I'm really interested to know what you do with the insole on a pair of shoes you find in a second hand shop. They will presumably have a well established footprint from the previous owner.
Hey Brother, THANK YOU FOR THIS CHANNEL. A true gentleman to shoes. Anyway, I have seen that you use “Pate De Luxe” wax more then “Mirror Gloss”. Do you use both on one shoe? I am so confused, I want all my pairs to look the most elegant as I can. Blessings!
