This was our summer holiday destination each july when the days felt long and sunny and carefree...I love looking back but it seems like a million years away now! 😢 We stayed in a guest house in Tynwald Street and the landlady was called Mrs Wright...she was originally from liverpool...happy days and part of my childhood memory book ❤
Lovely video. Nice to see it in its heyday too. Interesting to see the building of Summerland and its futuristic vision bearing in mind the tragedy that befell it :-( Like so many seaside places, it is now a shell of its former self.
Christine it was a magical place wasn’t it and somehow it’s charm seemed to fade particularly as it became an offshore tax haven for all of the wrong people it would seem.😢
@@buffplums one of my fondest memories is of going to Summer hill Glen. And Laxey and Rushen Abbey. And I loved walking in the sunken gardens in Douglas, at night when the lights were on. Remember the coloured fountain? And the sound of the clip clop of the horses on the trams and the interesting shops on Strand street. And that lovely old electric train with the open sides! And remember that water powered merry go round in, was it Groudle glen? Such lovely days.
Yes. I was born there and it was a wonderful place. What a horrible world we have now. So sad to see Britain now. I have stayed put in the land of my birth. I am not as happy as i was. But i pray that the English Scots welsh and lovely Irish people will one day recover their countries.
Have been 4 times in the last 25 years. Love it. You will not be spoon fed amusements but if you have imagination and put in some effort then it can still be a very pleasant place to go with a slower pace of life and feeling very safe still.
I know the Isle of Man since I went there first in 1979. I must say I find it quite magical still, although it doesn't burst from tourist anymore - apart from the TT weeks.
@@kathybarry2765 That evening me my parents and a mate plus myself were waiting for a taxi to take us there just before it came my dad was called into the old Nobles hospital as two workers did't turn up if my dad weren't called into work we would have been there too.
I am enjoying this Film as I went to the Isle of Man in the 50's we stayed at a Douglas Holiday Camp. We did see a Flower Garden. We never saw the Fairy Garden. Don't suppose that is there now. We love seeing photos which makes me want to visit again though. Thank you for this Video.
we went as a family for 10 years and always stayed in Port Erin. I went back a couple of times with friends when I was in my teens. We loved Silverdale and Rushen Abbey.
I remember seeing summerland under construction around 1969-70 whilst on holiday and watching the film the battle of Britain when it was first released at the Douglas cinema.
Ahh that’s the Isle of Man that I vaguely as an infant, remember and sadly a much more run down one in 1980 when I made my first unaccompanied trip as a boy of 15 … with wistful thoughts that I would meet a girl of my own age and fall in love… a bit ambitious for a day trip… hahah … such were my lonely expectations.
Many happy family holidays 1965-1977. Then it became cheaper to go abroad and almost guaranteed weather. I’d love to visit again. Sadly they seem to insist on the experimental jab to be allowed in. Ah well.

I remember that Isle of Man from my childhood. I weep when I see films of how it has become. It's beautiful days are over.

I remember those horse trams whilst on holiday in 1969 . Didn't life seem to be more enjoyable then .everyone seemed happier then.

Was a magical place back in the 70s. I'm sure it could be again if officials were replaced with people who had heart and soul.
I’m only 16 and seeing videos of the island 50 years ago makes me so jealous because i would do anything to see my little island like this again

Superb! Love it! Thank you very much!
Summerland was a great place for all ages I remember going loads of times with or without my parents until that terrible day on 2 August 1973
Yes..Was brilliant..My second home...👍
If you don't mind me saying. I was going that night.

@@michael-pw9cz Don't these things make you think...So we were very fortunate I guess...Take care my friend...
Love this wish I could go back in time and live here back then it’s so beautiful and unspoilt.

Summerhill glen?
if the isle of man was only still like this film. in 2023

It was an amazing place in those care free days. So sad too see it's decline as a holiday destination now.
Happy memories
Of great family holidays
Wheres the abundant flowers on douglas promenade now?

loved Silverdale - Great film
The IOM before incompetence mixed with extreme greed took over under the ironic title of "progress"
there was no stopping the decline in tourism because people would rather go to foreign counties where the sun was guaranteed
Hi there, we're hoping to use this footage for a news feature on ITV Granada Reports.
Do you know who we'd have to credit to use it?
🇮🇲Wunderschöne Insel. 😍
Mid 60's I should say.
Thanks for your input, looking at some of the details now I think you are right.
Plans for the tragic Summer land complex make this film late 1960s . RIP all 50 who died there 2 August 1973.
I remember our holiday in Douglas and summerland looking near completion in 1969 😊
1968 I would say.
how did it go wrong from 1969 to 2020
Cheap air travel it soon became far cheaper than a holiday in the Isle of Man
People.
Hi - do you know who owns the copyright on this?
In comparison, coming to the island now must be like turning up to the Glastonbury festival site a week after the event.
music name
I would say its 60s libary music

So there was nothing to do then on the Isle of Man then as well just like present day 😂
