Works with most any canned food I’ve gotten the practice of cutting the top off putting it top putting it upside down on whatever surface can properly hold the contents and pinching a hole in the bottom with my can opener just big enough to blow through
As a norwegian, I can not make myself comment in swedish... but I do believe you're supposed to cleave the thing completely (like with an axe) several times, then kind of put it back together with kindling inbetween the pieces. Wrap a round or two of wire around, and you basically have a self-sustaining stovetop.

That is another way to do it if you have something to tie it all together with. If not, this way works quite well if you cut deeper slots. About half way down works quite well.

@@wingracer1614 Yeah, I realised after the fact that it was actually mentioned in the video. Still, I feel like a proper swedish candle is done more effectively without a chainsaw.
the chainsaw method works too, if you have the right tools, you need to go like 3/4 through the log though. The chainsaw method has the advantage of not needing any wire/sacrificial rope because it all stays together as one piece and the sawdust can be a good fire starter.
Greetings, fellow space rock traveler. I actually checked to see if you had any content and was surprised to see you uploaded an axe and knife throwing video. I recall reading that Norse raiders were proficient in axe throwing because all Norse people got bored and practiced it. I am curious. Is this still done by some in Norway or are you just a modern rogue?

In Finland this is known as a "jätkänkynttilä" or a "the dudes candle"! :D Some say it is supposed to be made from a dead standing (snag, apparently?) pine tree.
Won't bother with swedish, but I think you should've made the cuts way deeper. Or at least that's how it is done in Finland.

@@tenkaiechi01 Texas Oak is very hard to cut with an axe. However you can use a splitting wedge and a hammer to make some even pieces.

I have only heard the swe name of firestump (eldkubbe)
I've heard different origin story. In the northern climate lumberjacks used old dried trees as "candles" to warm up and cook. It kind of makes more sense too because fresh tree doesn't burn that well. Especially at winter when all the juice is in the trunk and it's frozen. Takes a lot energy to get it going. And trying to find that dead tree where you need it in military conditions, just isn't going to happen. But lumberjacks would have access to those quite easily.
I think a lumberjack candle is a hole down the center with a joining air intake hole from the side
@@georgegrinter209 Lumberjacks have axes and saws, not drills. So they would do 2 cuts, maybe 3 and start the fire in the middle. Tho with older dead tree, you don't even need to cut anything because it has natural hole in the center.
@@georgegrinter209 You can also make a chimney in the center if you quarter the wood, split the middle section off and then tie the pieces back together with wire. As an alternative to the side hole, you can put the log on rocks, tent pegs etc. or cut slits in the top and bottom to allow for ventilation.
I didn't pay attention to what decade of swedish military they were talking about but if you're already issuing gear like uniforms and guns why not include some solid fuel and fire starters

@@georgegrinter209 actually, it tastes much better when properly cooked over a fire. When you cut it into slices and cook it, it tastes like salami. I've done this a couple of times when I went mountain hiking.
I always appreciate the way you show people terrible ways to do something as a way to point them in the right direction, it's rather entertaining, and educational in a 99 failures is a learning experience kinda way.

I have a friend that works for a company that makes these among other things and their biggest export customer for the "swedish candles" is, surprise surprise, Sweden.
Then again, we also export our used condoms to them so they can be recycled as gum.

You would make the cuts longer to make fuel and oxygen really get the fire going, there are also alot of other ways of making it, drill a 1 1/2 inch hole in to the log from the top and the middle and take the time to make the fire going with tinder and put rocks on the log so you get the airflow going.

Drilling a center hole especially makes a difference with harder/denser woods, too.

I've done this with stacking two logs up as well, and it works really well. i didn't make any cuts on teh second log either, the coals from the top log just work their way down and enough air got in there. i tried 3 logs once and that was a massive mistake because it fell over and threw red hot coals all over the place
In Finland, these are called "dude's candles".
Also, I wouldn't have to comment in Swedish, it's also a traditional Finnish thing to do.

the way campers n bushcrafters make it is usually by splitting a log into 4s with an axe. for accuracy n safety, you can place the axe head on it then hammer it through with another piece of wood. once it's in 4s, use some metal wire, usually brass, to hold it together. You can also rearrange the quarters so they dont fit together perfectly, and the gaps allow for air to flow through.

Swedish candles are something that almost nobody agrees on and this is a new version I’ve seen
The way I've seen these made before is to make a wider cut than just the width of the saw blade, to allow more air to flow in. A simple X where the cuts are about 10-15mm wide usually. An important part of the Swedish Candle is that it doesn't burn from the top down so much as it burns from the inside out, and the log itself acts as a heat sink/reflector. Filling the center of the X with a lot of light kindling helps to get the fire burning all the way down into the cut as well, which means a hotter fire. Different densities of wood may require wider or narrower cuts, for more or less airflow.

If you want to really boost up your swedish candle’s power (and are prepping pre-travel) try taking the channels that you cut, pack some fiber (cotton balls work great) into the slots most of the way down, and pour tree sap or if you have it a mix of sap and wax into them, the wood will wick the fuel and burn at a higher but also more even temperature for far longer, after pouring is finished use a small stick or rod to clear the bottom of the slot and the core of the intersection so that the airflow works, alternatively place sticks into those locations first and twist them out post-pour, however the leafblower technique will be a tad bit less safe/effective to say the least

These are what we call rocket stoves. The easiest way to make these is to dig a hole slightly wider than the diameter of the log, about a quarter the height, split the log and then carve out the middle of the log so when you put the pieces in the hole you have a large (2-3 inch) gap in the center with small air gaps between the sections. You can then use the excess wood to make tender and start your fire in the center of the split log. The “stove” part lasts a while (depending on the wood used) and then when you are done cooking you can collapse the stove into a nice fire to keep warm by. The next morning you just build another stove. It only takes a few minutes and you only use one solid log per fire.

I watched a couple of great videos on the lashing-together technique. You basically split the log into wedges, cut the point off one of the wedges from the end to around 3/4 of the way along (to make the 'chimney' for the fire) and then tie the wedges back together again.
You also make a hole at the fire point for airflow, rather than rely on the gaps between the wedges... makes for more of a rocket stove design, I guess. Stuff some tinder and a few sticks down the chimney, light them, and Bobs your uncle.
It's not quite a no-tools survival technique I guess, but a decent axe and knowledge of how to split wood (and a way to start the fire) and you're good to go. No chainsaw needed.

Spam is wonderful. I live about an hour from the spam plant and toured the spam museum there. They gave out samples, too.
I learned today that if I'm ever stuck in the woods I'll be fine as long as I have a leaf blower some fire starters a blow torch, a can of spam and an electric saw 😂

I've seen tests and apparently a Wood Rocket Stove is more efficient, it burns much longer and at higher temperatures and you only need an auger and make two holes in a tree trunk, one straight down the center and one on the side into the base of the vertical one. put some kindling in the bottom and it will burn itself from the center outwards with a "jet" like flame.
I’ve seen this done before and the cuts were about halfway down the log. That would give more heat for cooking. It creates more of a draft and a stronger flame in the center. (Sorry I don’t know Swedish language)

Only thing that went wrong here was using the weak chainsaw on a hard wood. Deeper cuts would've made for better air flow, and birch would've provided pre installed tinder.
Side note I know of a similar method using a drill/hole saw to cut two cylindrical holes that intersect perpendicular to each other will achieve the same effect, with less effort. And yes hand crank drills do exist so it would've been reasonable for the given time period

The best way my gaming group has found to enjoy spam is to cube it and deep fry it. We have a bunch of folks that don't like spam at all (odd I know) but when I deep fry it they actually enjoy it. Thought I would pass this along for jason. Plus, now you have a reason to have a deep fry episode. P.s. I use Alton Brown's technique for deep frying a turkey. Loads of fun and a significant chance of third degree burns as well.
I imagine that the deeper the holes the most area of wood that would catch on fire creating more heat and air flow.

It needs a hole in the side to open an close like a carb on a weed pipe it would allow you to fine tune the heat better
Those cuts should be about 12 inches deeper. Fun fact, in some parts of Sweden this is known as a "Finnish stove"

Om jag hade gjort det hade jag delat stubben hela vägen ner för att sedan binda ihop den igen. Detta för att kunna starta elden på insidan av stocken och inte ovanpå. Som ni gör kommer elden antingen slockna eller bli väldigt svag när den kommer ner till slutet av snittet.

Not enough surface area and air flow for a fire to get big and hot enough to sustain itself. But other than that you got the right idea.
A bigger hole in the middel of the log so the fire gets deeper in there might help.
