I studied Spanish for a looooooong time and learned from different teachers who were from different spanish-speaking countries (Mexico, Cuba, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Colombia), and I loved learning all the different dialects (and different vocab, too!). I went on to study a bit of Italian, French, and German and holy moly I fucking love language, language diction is fascinating

Yes, you're right about the r's turning into l's in Puerto Rican Spanish. It's only when the r is in the middle or end of the word though, never at the beginning. We also tend to skip saying the s's at the end of a word. It almost sounds like we ran out of breath before finishing saying the word lol

More info on the Puerto Rican accent: Puerto Ricans, especially rural ones, don’t roll their r’s. I’ve met many who drop the -s on words, and many shorten words (para->pa) too!
brittany makes me want to dive back into spanish. when i was in HS i could jump into convo with no problem speaking spanish. i remember breaking that language barrier with some customers when i was 17 @ my first job and them being relieved and impressed. it feels good to be able to do that and communicate with people that others around you may not be able to.
