    I had a. Soapstone stove that weighed about 800 pounds. Bringing it south from VT to NJ in a VW bus was fun.
    It had so much mass that the chimney would still be 400 degrees when the wood was gone :)
    The only place creosote formed was on the chimney cap :)

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree
      @LiveSimpleLiveFree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, creosote did not build up at the bend. It built up at the ceiling line and above. But the bend made it not draw as well, so it wouldn’t burn as hot, and created more creosote.

    When I installed my grizzly, I used their double wall also. But then I added there insulated class a to go through the roof. Basically it's a 5" pipe with kaowool on the inside that slips over their double wall pipe. I liked the look so much I order enough to do my entire flute from stove to cap. Looks great and I yet to have a problem with creosote. I also burn half of one of those chimney sweep logs every other week.

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree

      The first section of the pipe closest to the wood stove should be single wall to help radiate more heat inside the building, the rest may be double wall and insulated

    If it would have been me, I would have put a 3 inch to 6 inch converter on the stove and went up through the roof with 6 inch double or triple wall pipe. You would have to clean out the flue about once every 2-3 years, if that. Still what you did was so smart Bill! That was a great choice of a stove for your RV home. You and the Mrs. have a wonderful channel! Thanxz

      Would you have changed it to 6” right where it joins the stove you mean? My flue has been fitted with a SMALLER size than recommended and I’ve been thinking whether it’s worth changing it to the larger size. It also has a couple of 45° bends in it that I can’t see the point so I want to run it straight the whole way. Thanks

    Awesome. Glad to see updates on the little wood stove. Some of my favorite videos for some reason. Some of the big box stores started selling the 3" double wall pipes now too. I made my own when they where harder to get which is still working good, but keeping an eye out for them to buy a new pipe. Sometimes its nice to just replace it seems like new pipe stays cleaner longer guessing that cleaning it creates scratches and stuff sticks to it easier over time.

    I had a conventional wood stove in the house for my main heat source and I used the duravent chimney pipes that are double walled with high temp insulation in it all the way down to the stove and had to clean it out twice a month. But then I bought a advance wood stove with the secondary burn tubes in it . It not only eliminated the creosote issue but reduced my wood usage. I only clean the flue chimney now once a year now and it's only a light black soot in the pipe. So if you can find a a advance wood stove that would work in the size you need I think you would like it even more than what you have.

    Bill- Ever since I saw your original video on the cubic stove, I have wanted one for my tiny cabin. Two days ago I finally was able to order one. Now I discover the creosote problem and so on through this video. I believe God wants me to have the stove. If I had watched this video first, I probably would not have bought the stove.
    My original plan was to put a 90 degree turn in the flue and go out the wall. My cabin has a slanted, corrugated metal roof. After years of living in an RV, I have learned not to punch any holes in my roof, no matter what!
    However, the Cubic Stove company does not approve 90 turns in the flue. My son suggested a 45 degree turn.
    After watching this video, I am now perplexed. For one thing, I am 71 years old and there is no way I am going up on a slanted roof to clean out the flue. If I go out the wall at 45 degrees, will I be able to get double walled fittings as necessary? I ordered the Cub. Will it get as hot as the Grizzly?
    Any word of advice you can offer regarding my stove would be appreciated. I have not yet ordered any accessories, just the stove. I don't expect to get it installed til next summer, and I will have help, but cleaning the flue will probably fall on me, esp if it needs to be done often. Any ideas?
    Thanks and God bless!
    -Deb

    • @LiveSimpleLiveFree
      @LiveSimpleLiveFree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had several other videos in my Cubic Mini playlist documenting the creosote issues. I'm so sorry you didn't see them! The rubber gasket that I installed in the video is made to go unto a roof with a pitch up to 45%, and it has a pliable base that can go onto a corrugated metal roof. I think this fix, with adding the double wall pipe all the way through the roof is going to fix it so that I can clean out the flue only once or twice a year instead of every month. The 3" pipe is very hard to find, especially fittings. Cubic has the pipe, but not elbow fittings. There is another thing you could do. Cubic does have an adapter that will allow you to convert from the 3" pipe to a larger pipe, like 4" or 5". That way you could find 90 or 45 degree elbows locally. It is still not recommended to use 90 degree turns because it slows down the draw to much. But you can use two 45 degree turns, separated by some straight pipe in between. That will keep it drawing better. That way you could take it out the wall, which would be easier to clean out. ANY woodstove should be cleaned out at least once a year, if it is used on a regular basis. We use our all day, every day. If it is used less often, it wouldn't have to be cleaned out as often.

    • @debleetwo
      @debleetwo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LiveSimpleLiveFree Thanks, Bill! As I said, I think God wants me to have this stove. I somehow missed the other videos. The adapter to larger pipe sounds like a good idea. I have plenty of time to research this and collect parts, also several possible advisors, tho none of them are familiar with the cubic stove.
      Thanks so much for the feedback, and good luck with the COPPA mess!

    I concur. Straight up chimney is best. I have the same setup in my truck camper and I have identical results. I think I've posted in the past, but I can hit 500 on my stove (thermo on the side) stuffing it with compressed fire bricks.
    (Wood fuel blocks) For me, in my small space, they stack easy and are always dry. Menards here in the midwest sells 6 packs for just under 3 bux. (22 lbs of fuel).
    Nice thing about these blocks is they are 9 inches long and can fit diagonally in the stove. Cut them up and you can stack more inside. I've stretched out the heat for a few hours this way. It will never be an "over- nighter" type stove, but it sure helps when temps dip into the negatives. My propane certainly is thankful as well!❄❄

    Nothing is as good as a wood burner for heat but the creosote is a problem that needs management even with a good flue setup. Nothing that a regular inspection and sweep cant keep the lid on but thanks for sharing your experience and solutions.

    Thanks Bill -- I did purchase the stove several years back on your recommendation and have yet to install it because I couldn't locate the flange or the piece with orange you just installed on the roof. Recently I did purchase the flange from Cubic Stove. They are finally able to sell all the parts to install the stove properly. Only issue is that its Canadian and there is a fee on the credit card to convert the purchase price to Canadian and shipping is not cheap. I had purchased all the double-walled pipe from a local home improvement store so I would encourage anyone to shop some of those items should they want to get this stove. The Cubic store staff are very helpful, and the installation manual is so much better now then when the stove was first offered.

    Its summertime..whaaa?? Lol..awesome! I love my grizzly..I plan on testing it in the up coming single digits next week. I'm going to put it up to a real good test. It did rather exceptionally well in 20 degree weather maintaining a 70-75 degree temp inside my 27 foot vintage camper. I plan on making this camper my retreat in the woods! Solar and woodstove. So let's see how that stove does. Looking forward to it. I love your mini cubic vlogs. Aww too bad about you deleting the older videos.

    Greetings from Canada, I'm assuming your one of our neighbours to the south. Just a suggestion for what's above the cieling flange that surrounds your double walled stainless steel flue pipe. I noticed a gap all around the pipe for fire protection and could see how careful you were in centering the pipe within the opening using the flange as a guide. My concern is the gap is exposed to the cold temperatures and with the holes in the ceiling flange underneath that exposed ceiling cavity, cold air can sink and enter the conditioned room below. My suggestion is use roxsol insulation which is a mineral wool that gives fire protection as well as insulates. That removes that gap (code up here is a 2 inch gap all around whereas you have 1 inch gap). I would also use it above the roof line under the rubber shroud fitting it up against the pipe. If insulation is the issue then this method will tighten up your connection and provide a fire safe blanket around your pipe.

    I have the grizzly in my 32’ coachman, our furnace does not work so I thought this would heat us up real good well it doesn’t put out crap for heat and quits burning if draft is not left wide open. I am using 3” hot water heater pipe going out a side window not gonna put holes in my roof!! Even with single wall pipe the heat is not enough unless you sit there and keep it fired hot, good part about my pipe is there has not been the sweating or build up of creosote that everyone else complains about. I like the stove but to me it’s just a oh how cute piece of furniture

      Yours is not putting out enough heat because you have a bend in the pipe to go out the window. With a bend, it doesn't draw right, so it doesn't burn hot enough. Ours burns so hot, you cant get near it. It heats our entire RV when it's -10F outside! We love it!

    Just was going to ask if you knew about taking out the plates as you said it. It took me a season of cleaning to figure out the plates came out also. So it wasn’t just you! I have double wall outside, and am considering wrapping with exhaust insulation wrap.

    Thanks for redoing this installation! I bought a mini with one 2' section pipe and remembered your previous problems and the offset pipe with clean out. Straight up then! Any trouble with the screws in that removable baffle plate rusting out? Im preemptively worried about stripping one of them out someday and not being able to fix that.

      No problems with screws rusting out. But then, we used the stove for 3 seasons, then sold the property it was on.
