Looks like i made the right decision. I bought a n100 Mini-PC with 12GB DDR5, the other option was a model with 16GB DDR4. The seller also claimed DDR5 would use less power.
Please, do not only look at the memory if it is DDR4 or DDR5, also look at the speed in Mhz and also the latencies, that defines everything, there are faster ddr4 and therefore, better performance than ddr5
There are probably two things going on here. Intel was probably trying to keep costs down. There doesn't seem to be too much difference in price between DDR4 & DDR5 now. A couple of weeks ago, a stick of 16 Gb DDR5 was quite a bit more expensive than DDR4. And, Intel seems to be trying to cripple the low end chips. There is no reason why an N100 can't do dual channel memory. It's on the specs. Dual channel in either an N100 or N150 would rival some of the more expensive chips. I'd imagine a dual channel N150 with DDR5 would perform very well. I doubt that we will ever see that combination in one of these pre-built mini pc's.
I also thought at first that it was a good thing, but on the other hand, if at some point the power supply fails, an external power supply is easier to replace than an internal one.

DDR4 and DDR5 RAM are not compatible with each other. I'm not certain what you mean by "I'll pop the DDR5 into this this". Maybe I should watch the whole video before commenting but I couldn't resist. Okay, now I watched the whole video. I have 3 n100 units with DDR5 and one n100 unit with DDR4. Comparing the DDR4 unit with the n150 Beelink purely for number crunching, the n150 is certainly faster. Comparing with the DDR5 n100, the Beelink is slower but not by too much. I bet if I brought graphics into the picture, the DDR5 n100 models will handily beat the Beelink, but I use these units in a kubernetes cluster so I don't really care about the graphics performance 😅
A catastrophic blunder by Beelink who either have no quality control in operation or don't care because sales are the only motivation.
