ANSWER: Near the end of the drill is an electronic device that emits radio signals, informing the operator and other people on the surface about the location of the end of the drill. The end of the drill is cut at a sharp angle, like a chisel. The electronic device near the end of the drill tells the operator in which direction this sloped face of the drill is pointing. If the drill is rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the drill moves in a straight line. However, if the drill is NOT rotated as it is pushed through the soil, then the soil pushes against the sloped face of the drill and causes the end of the drill to move in the direction which is OPPOSITE to the direction in which the sloped face is pointing. So if the sloped face of the drill is pointing downwards, then the drill moves upwards. If the sloped face is pointing to the right, then the drill moves left. Etc.
HOW IT WORKS, it uses water to spin and drill through the ground, then when ready to go up the operator sets the drill tip (bit) to a certain angle which makes it resurface, next the cable lines or pipes that will be placed in the hole are locked to the tip and the machines pulls the drill back out through where it came from and bring the now attached pipes with it, once the drill is out, the the pipes are detached and the drill’s job is done.

I wish that MY town would use this technology. Our roads are a mess. They excavate trenches to remove old water and sewer pipes, lay replacement pipes, then fill the trenches. The disturbed soil settles, creating ruts, bumps, potholes, ... so the roads are almost impassable -- not only while the pipes are being replaced, but even after the road has been paved again.
Makes it way harder for the next guy if you're burying stuff at 5'. Keep it at 36" and thread the needle between everything. Especially if it's just a small duct for a secondary or single phase primary. I've went deep before when putting in 6", 8" 12" PE pipe when needed but always try to install like I'll need to locate it in the future.

5' to 6' thats deep as hell what are you guys putting in? Water sewer?
It all depends on existing utilities. If there is a lot at 4', it's easier to go deeper if you can.
