I have been a 'Hi-Fi'-Buff in my early teens ( puberty years: to be exact); The term: 'Audiophile' wasn't coined yet. I have been following your Forever Analog channel .. since day-1 ? You are really educating audiophiles and I can attest to the verity of your ideas, suggestions and knowledgeable teachings. Learning is an unending process and one who listens to something that make sense will always gain. Thank you for sharing this hobby. BTW, I am 79 years old, woke up with Vacuum Tubes and during the advent of Transistor technology in the late 60's, I was glad I clung to my 1964 Fisher 800-C Receiver; I occasionally listen to it every now and then. As a serious Audiophile 10 years after, I made a loan and rewarded myself with a USED Audio Research SP-3 Pre-amp and I/52 Power amp built in 1973; still, my main listening gear driving a pair of VOTT Valencias (half a century old). Listening to the musicality makes me more passionate. BTW; again... my profound appreciation on your journey in educating the "Millennium Audiophiles". 🎼🎹🎻🎷🎸🎵
I think the people who designed the easy bake oven may have designed that particular disc player. Also, if Barbie owned a disc player, it would be that one... This video was 100% fun, but also very, very informative. An external DAC can turn any reasonable/compatible disc player into a component punching above its weight thus giving it a second life. I'd like to see an easy bake oven/DVD player combo. Great Video!
Thank you! I was hoping to have fun with the pink player but also provide some information to anyone interested in buying a cheap disc player and hooking it up to an external DAC!
I currently have my Toshiba SD-100 DVD player, which I bought back in 1999. Now back in the day, the SD-100 was an excellent DVD player, it has co-axial port, as well as a RCA output. So recently, I got it down from the loft, to hook it up to my Roksan K3 amplifier, which of course has it's own built in dac and of course, everything sounded great. I then decided to try it out with my Topping DX3 Pro+, which is a headphone amplifier & dac, with built in blue tooth (amazing for the price) and everything sounded great with headphones on. Of course, the one problem was the DVD player was extremely noisy. So I decided to open it up and just to give the working parts a bit of a going over with WD40, and now, you can hardly hear any noise at all coming from the Toshiba, and the sound is great. So maybe if you can access the insides of the pink DVD player and give it a lube, it might sound a lot better.
I have a Cambridge CXC transport and an Audiolab 6000CDT. Great cd transports. But I start a couple of years ago with a Megatek 30 bucks dvd player. The pink One that you have there ( maybe less boring for a lot of people that prefers colors than a black or silver box ) is like the sony cheap 45 bucks Dvd player with no screen. Sounds loud on idle, the laser sounds when reading, but let me tell you something. In this hobby when you start to spend more and more, sometimes you think that some of that buys doesn't makes you feel like you really upgrade something. and it happened to me with cd players. I upgrade speakers from klipsch 600M and Sony CS5 to wharfedales Linton and Emotiva B2+ great upgrades. You really hear the difference. Dac upgrade. From schiit Modi 3 to Denafrips ares 2 . Yes you can hear the difference here. but from 30 bucks megateck dvd player using the coax output to the Cambridge for 700 or the audiolab for 650, now i feel that the upgrade was not too necessary at this time, Because of course, it have less noise, almost zero when reading cds. Maybe more information "transport"? i don't know. With the Denafrips Ares II, The Megatek DVD player and the B2+ I can't hear any difference, really, because when i hear music , normally i do it more loud than the laser sound that goes out from the megatek, so I never hear the laser when listening music. I don't know, off course maybe I'm wrong, or maybe I am not an audiophile, but with a switcher, the difference switching 1-2 , 1-2 the more easy way to hears differences , I don't hear any difference. Low, mids and highs, Clear, perfect, same sound for my ears. So I really think that maybe the CD Player can be the last thing that you have to upgrade on a 2Ch system. first. Good Speakers, Good Amp, Good DAC, If you like turntables. A Good turntable with a good Cartdrige ( you hear differences swaping cartdridges ). a good phono preamp, A good streaming service, good decent cables, and finally when you checked and feel very pleased with all that equipment, Now you can upgrade the cheap cd player, or maybe not,. I think there is a lot of people that loves that pink player, and don't feel comfortable when somebody laugh and ridicules even a cheap product color. You can say that you don't like it , but I think It was too much. by the way , good channel, take care!
You write, "...the CD Player ... last thing...first. Good Speakers..." Meh, of course I'm going to Reply (because you want me to), with a different approach. 😁 The Volume Knob. It is THE foundation of any system. Obtain the finest volume control one can when starting out. This single control is in the unique place of the signal chain and it regulates the performance of ALL other components including speakers. No matter which source one chooses, its signal passes through the volume control. Meaning all your sources are limited to it's performance. No matter which amplifier or speakers one chooses, its signal quality has been limited to the performance of volume control. So get a good one, it's worth it. "Open" or uncontained resistor rotary attenuators are the worst. They are rudimentary mechanical pieces that get contaminated, can't channel match, add crosstalk, noise...etc. The type that is, at least, shaft connected from the face to the rear of the chassis shortens up the jumper cable lengths. Better includes such things as carbon film resistors made in Japan 24 steps, stereo, dual union Material of Shield/cover: Aluminum alloy, CNC machined Shield/cover surface finish: Titanium gold plated Material of insulator: Teflon Material of Contact Pins: 24K Gold Plated copper. Best though is the ALL RELAY. It's audibly superior for many reasons, will never degrade or need service (all things can fail) and is the foundation to build on. Any thoughts? 🔈🔉🔊

I just limited to buy and listen, don't know exactly what is good or wrong in the devices but if I buy something that doesn't like, I get another one to hear if it's better or not for me. In my journey, I think I'm exactly where I wanted to be right now, and what is the materials or specs of my volume control?, don't know, but my mix of devices sounds as heaven, and I really enjoy my big collection of vinyl, cassettes, cd's, sony hi fi walkman, macbook pro, you name the source, sounds good, and I think that is the whole point of listening music. Off course could sounds better, Always can sounds better, that's the game too, maybe you can upgrade your devices adding your knowledge and tuning perfectly. I am not on that level ( And I don't think I want to be there ), I just wanted to share part of my listening experience with CD players, and my opinion about what to get first. for me speakers that can sound good with a cheap fosi amp or with a macintosh monster is a good start. I don't undestand when somebody tells me start with a good volume control. Where I can buy a volume control. Amazon?, ebay? Vinshine?, and where i plug my speakers and insert a cd on that volume control. I just wanted to keep it simple. But again , and as I start. Think you're rigth. Thanks
@@TriAmpHiFi You are absolutely right with your opinions to the volume knob and the potentiomenter used. I'm just building a preamp, and after some tests i'd stuck with the relay solution. It's reliable, can be positioned as close as possible to the amplifier parts and can be easylie controlled with an Arduino (or any other Microcontroller). The knob wil be of course full aluminium 😅
Controlling jitter with a clock is all important when it comes to the transport. A decent buffer will also be essential. No budget gear will give you this option.
The why (make that DVD design). I don't think they were marketing it to middle-aged men. My daughter and probably millions of little girls and other people would probably love to have something that was pink (with some decoration) instead of boring black like like everything else. I wouldn't be surprised if that would later be coveted because if it's kitsch appeal. I'm thinking of the gaudy 70s decor that now appreciate. A reason to make it lightweight is to reduce the cost of shipping but also makes it practical to travel with it. For example, I go to my parents' lake cabin that has basically no TV reception and limited Internet. I bring a DVD player and a lightweight flat screen TV so that we can have movie nights. Usually, when I go to a hotel, they want to charge an arm and a leg for crappy movies. If I pack a small DVD player can plug in a DVD player and play whenever we brought along (or could pick up from Redbox if they are still around). I guess I could also plug it into the auxiliary port of any old boombox or other stereo at the lake cabin or places with vintage audio stuff in them and be able to play CDs.
DVD is one of the cheapest options to play CDs on the budget. Change my mind. It's also cool, I like that most DVDs have display on them and are very easy to navigate with a remote.
Wow over 18 minutes to explain that cheaper DVD players tend to have a louder motor while playing the disc. You're saving like 300 bucks over the Blu-Ray player or expensive CD players but if you aren't listening to classical music you're likely not going to hear it. If you are using headphones - even better! I think using one of these DVD players is a great way to listen to music today without having to use Spotify and you can even make your own Mix-Discs with your personal selected tracklist. It's also a great way to use this kind old technology without having to dump it.
It is easy to find music that will not get flagged on TH-cam. You just need music that is past the copyright protection time. You can play classical music or things like jazz and blues from a singer who died more than 70 years ago.
FYI very important - when using a DVD player as a source even over optical - make sure all options for audio tweaks and dynamic noise adjustments are off. I just spent several hours going back-and-forth between two players hooked optically to the same DAC with the same CD wondering why the sound was so different…
@@ForeverAnalog I recently found a massive early McIntosh DVD/CD player. Unfortunately, the lens on the (likely $20) Sony DVD reader in is shot and it keeps malfunctioning.
But you seemed to miss the whole point. If someone listens to music, loudly, which is constantly noisy, e.g. heavy metal they possibly don't care too much about the transport making a noise as the disk spins especially if they are in a large room and sitting far away from it. What many were saying was if you simply want to listen to music they did not think what came out of the speakers would be different to what you would get using an expensive transport although some have said that is not true and the transport somehow affects the digital stream according to some audiophiles.
as far as HiFi is concerned the biggest waste of cash is spent on a CD transport. CD players just read data, by all means output coaxial and then use a decent DAC, but do not waste your cash on a fancy player.
I actually use a cheapo Sony blu ray player plugged in via Coax to a Schiit Modi 3 to play CDs. Can't really comment on sound though. It's mostly just a novelty since I have my pc right by. I actually find this topic really interesting. To me, the idea that different CD transports plugged into the same DAC may actually sound different is fascinating. After all, they're all just reading the same bits on the CD, right? Yet people seem to hear differences anyways. As someone who doesn't have a ton of money to spend on gear, I often wonder how the sound of these cheapo DVD/Blu-Ray players compare to CD players costing several hundred dollars when they're both used as just transports, with the same DAC.

so yeah it is exactly as you say just the transport and signal acquisition! the data stream is digital so there will never be any difference from this to a million dollar unit due the the fact that 0's and 1's are zeros and ones period the difference lies with in the actual DAC and attached components, and also a decent set of interconnects will provide the same audio quality discernible by the average human ear. i laugh when people go out and pay hundreds of dollars for a 6 foot cable when a $10/ 20 would have been sufficient
Enjoyed your video, I just picked up 2300 CDs at an estate sale and I was concerned by using my older cd players. By the way what camera are you using, its super clear...
Great vid! Cheap pink player with a coaxial output...gotta cater to that market of stereophile 7 year old girls with outboard DACs. Anyways, it's that time of year with yard sales a plenty! Always on the lookout for solid electronics! Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed!
The real question is can a decent inexpensive CD, DVD or BlueRay player give a better audio sound if you use it as a transport and cable it into a Dac? I am thinking about doing that.
I think yes, but the inexpensive player can sometimes have faults like noisy tray or spinning or not have a proper display, so it might take awhile to find the right one, but if you buying second hand, they are often less than $20 so it's not a huge risk compared to buying a brand new $400+ CD player.
I'd love to see someone out there hook up a Crosley or Victrola suitcase record player to a McIntosh amp and to hook up the amp to some super high-end speakers by Bowers & Wilkins or to a pair of Klipsch La Scala speakers, etc. JUST FOR THE IRONY. Hahaha! :)
What about the Sony DVPSR210P DVD player that's been around for about 10 years. It's been as cheap as $24 but now it goes for $34.95. In 2014 I purchased one and it still plays and works today.
Maybe a cheap cd walkman will have less rattles? Or a playstation ? What's the sound like if you bypass the DAC? Is there much difference? Can you get CD 'bass expander' on a DAC?
@@marshmower thanks man I can't remember any hiss but I'll keep it mind next tim I check, and I'll make sure always on 12v power so no battery to worry about
Great video. I'd like to see someone hook up a suitcase record player to an external phono pre-amp and then to a great receiver (like your Marantz 2270 perhaps? I love my 2270 too) to see if the sound quality is far better and if one can turn that lump of coal into a diamond. :)
I bought 2 Daewoo 🤘🤘snazzy looking DVD players from Target in 2005. I always covered them up. Only watched 3 box sets and maybe 3 burned discs total on both. Both failed after maybe 10-14 hours each. 😠 They were always noisey and got to skipping after a few years of sitting. I really had to screw with the remote to not skip frames. I don't think I got my $50x2 of use to be honest. PS beware of hidden damages in thrift store. I've lost hundreds on thrift store garbage
I’ve actually been testing a 6 watt tube amp this past week but the Sony is easy to toss in for something like this. I found another small vintage receiver while thrifting Friday that I plan to make a video on too so I just keep stuff coming in and out lol.
That pink DVD player would seem cooler if it had Henry Mancini's 'Pink Panther' theme playing in the background. Was that DVD player made by the My Little Pony people or by Pepto Bismol? :)
Forever "Analogue" (I'm British! 🇬🇧) ... Reviews a "Digital" device! So, "Sometimes" Analogue? 🤣 There was rather a LOT of talking, and waving around of pink DVD player! Buys a cheap pink DVD player, and complains about the "horrible red light!" ... It's just a red LED. What's "horrible" about it? It's there to indicate the device is receiving power. Is receiving power "horrible?" The "awful" noise was the disc spindle motor spinning, amplified by the plastic casing. Is spinning the optical disc "awful?" Is it "awful" when a more expensive player spins its disc? 10:10 ... I'm stopping watching.
Hello obviously it's ugly LOL but this kind of player is intended for a child or a teenager and it also allows children and teenagers 2013 foot in the world of hi-fi video it's not because it is rose which is unworthy at the level of the laser reading head after which there are also people who cannot invest more than €20.00 or $20 in this type of equipment but it allows them to access the broadcast of films at at home it can also be in troubleshooting when you have a breakdown of your large equipment like Oppo lol and yes the breakdowns are not exclusively for small brands MDR Bonjour évidemment c'est moche MDR mais ce genre de lecteur et destiner à un enfant ou un adolescent et ça permet aussi aux enfants et aux adolescents 2013 pied dans le monde de la vidéo hi-fi ce n'est pas parce qu'il est rose qui démérite au niveau de la tête de lecture laser après il y a aussi des personnes qui ne peuvent pas investir plus que 20,00€ ou 20$ dans ce genre de matériel mais ça leur permet d'accéder à la diffusion de films à domicile ça peut être aussi in dépannage quand vous avez une panne de votre gros matériel genre oppo mdr et oui les pannes ne sont pas exclusivement pour les petites marques MDR

Good idea! Next time for sure!
sounds good because they can't put a bad quality dac in a device that fully relies on it. But there probably are exceptions..
Can't you convert the HDMI output to toslink and use your own DAC?

Over 20 years ago, the term "digital quality" was used like it was still a feature. And comedy was that feature
Digital: it either works ...or doesn't. 😂
so yeah it is exactly as you say just the transport and signal acquisition! the data stream is digital so there will never be any difference from this to a million dollar unit due the the fact that 0's and 1's are zeros and ones period the difference lies with in the actual DAC and attached components, and also a decent set of interconnects will provide the same audio quality discernible by the average human ear. i laugh when people go out and pay hundreds of dollars for a 6 foot cable when a $10/ 20 would have been sufficient
Enjoyed your video, I just picked up 2300 CDs at an estate sale and I was concerned by using my older cd players. By the way what camera are you using, its super clear...
Great CD haul! This camera is just my iphone!
Great video! Very fun, but actually informative too! 😎🤘
Thank you! I had a lot of fun with that player 😂
Great vid! Cheap pink player with a coaxial output...gotta cater to that market of stereophile 7 year old girls with outboard DACs. Anyways, it's that time of year with yard sales a plenty! Always on the lookout for solid electronics! Thanks for posting. Liked and subscribed!
Lol thank you!
Hahaha! :)
Ha! Yeah that would be funny for sure.
9:38 Awwww! It purrs like a kitten! Adds to the appeal to the teenage girls that would buy such a thing.
Good vlog. Whether a CD player can be connected with an amplifier.
12:12 Just what I was looking for!
I've being trying random devices for audio and video looking for good a and v

Thanks for watching!
What about the Sony DVPSR210P DVD player that's been around for about 10 years. It's been as cheap as $24 but now it goes for $34.95. In 2014 I purchased one and it still plays and works today.
Awesome!
That little jem has damned good dac
Is that Sony the STRDH190?
Yep!
Great video
🙏🏾 thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you. It was a lot of fun to make!
What is the model of the Sony BlueRay player you use?
X800m2
Thank you
Definitely a conversation piece, for the aesthetics alone. U, like I need help. 😉
Haha yes!
Maybe a cheap cd walkman will have less rattles? Or a playstation ? What's the sound like if you bypass the DAC? Is there much difference? Can you get CD 'bass expander' on a DAC?
Remember that spindle motor hiss from discman? That noise can make its way into the output when the battery gets low.
Not sure if ‘Pink Thing’ was a sly reference to the XTC song or not. Either way, that’s way cool.
I wish I had been that clever!
Yeah thrift buys are always a gamble.
Yess you can.
Great video
nice little pink guy ...
Have a good Sony Blu Ray. But no Bluetooth. Can not get it😢.
Is that Sony receiver your daily driver now?
I’ve actually been testing a 6 watt tube amp this past week but the Sony is easy to toss in for something like this. I found another small vintage receiver while thrifting Friday that I plan to make a video on too so I just keep stuff coming in and out lol.
That pink DVD player would seem cooler if it had Henry Mancini's 'Pink Panther' theme playing in the background. Was that DVD player made by the My Little Pony people or by Pepto Bismol? :)
I love the Pink Panther idea!
Or you can get a Sony video game console, that works well too😊
sony receiver? do you own anything good? which one is is bad...the cf player or the sony?
nice ~
It will play CD, it's not high end. It doesn't support CD formats like CD-r or CD-RW, mp3,atrac3,etc...
Very true thanks for watching!
You are headed towards a divorce if you always seeking "wife's approval"
Lol, all good here but thanks for the unsolicited marriage advice!
I think that I found a replacement for my setup; th-cam.com/video/3kVd-1sM9Z0/w-d-xo.html
Amazing 😂
use the dac. the use of an out board is pointless.
At CD player used
You know you can store 1428 CDs in a 1TB SSD. right?
Yeah but my channel is a celebration of gear and physical media lol so lots of videos about what I own, not stream or store lol
Stick with Denon & harman kardon, rotel ,Nad ... skip the rest !
Forever "Analogue" (I'm British! 🇬🇧) ... Reviews a "Digital" device!
So, "Sometimes" Analogue? 🤣
There was rather a LOT of talking, and waving around of pink DVD player!
Buys a cheap pink DVD player, and complains about the "horrible red light!" ... It's just a red LED. What's "horrible" about it? It's there to indicate the device is receiving power. Is receiving power "horrible?"
The "awful" noise was the disc spindle motor spinning, amplified by the plastic casing. Is spinning the optical disc "awful?" Is it "awful" when a more expensive player spins its disc?
10:10 ... I'm stopping watching.
What I think he is implying is more expensive units have a larger box which dampens the sound of the disks spinning using possibly a quieter motor.
Hello obviously it's ugly LOL but this kind of player is intended for a child or a teenager and it also allows children and teenagers 2013 foot in the world of hi-fi video it's not because it is rose which is unworthy at the level of the laser reading head after which there are also people who cannot invest more than €20.00 or $20 in this type of equipment but it allows them to access the broadcast of films at at home it can also be in troubleshooting when you have a breakdown of your large equipment like Oppo lol and yes the breakdowns are not exclusively for small brands MDR
Yeah, I had fun using this player and making this video. Thanks for watching!
great video
Thanks!
