- Destiny 1 introduced the Black Heart in its vanilla campaign. Much wasn't said other than it needs to be taken out, its a heart of Darkness and the Vex worship it. In Lightfall we search for the Veil and after finding the new exotic LMG in the Black Garden, learn the truth. What the Black Heart was and why it was created.

Today we discuss what the Black Heart is and who created it! Also the emotional journey Nimbus has after their mentor sacrifices themselves. This video was created days after Lightfalls release, but today we discuss this exotic quest!
Funny how this video came out right as i was on the last mission, i almost forgot to watch cuz i wanted to see for myself but i have 3 thoughts
1. there were no giant minotaur demigods
2. “Oh yea the GoS raid takes place in the black garden” back on that *later*
3. You can safely-ish walk around the see of radiolaria in the final boss room for some reason it doesn’t instakill nor cause DoT until you head back into the arena part of the radiolaria
why is this mission replayable?

"Us" when Nimbus says it, would mean Neomuni and possibly other Cloud Striders, and not necessarily inclusive of guardians.

This is definitely a very minor thing but I do miss Mather Mercer as our Guardians VA or at least for human males then. I’ve always liked his performances and especially found his voice very fitting for a hunter in particular. The male VA we have now feels more in place on a titan than anything else. Kinda wish voices were class specific similar to the Old Republic game and not just the singular VAs we have now.
On another note regardless of the VAs themselves I still want more banter between our guardian and ghost. They’ve effectively made ghost his own little character but have kinda done so at the expense of our own. Also still want more of us actually being the main character and not just witnessing the events around other characters but that’s admittedly more of an issue in the seasonal stories. Anyways sorry for the off topic tirade but would love to hear people’s thoughts.

As a name specifically mentioned in dialogue and relevant to some story info, yes- and very cool to get more insight and linking things in the past to aspects of the current story so many years later.
But as for the location, it has been there since Shadowkeep's Garden of Salvation raid.

@@SirCamWAUnfortunately by linking it they broke their own story. It was clearly stated back in D1 that the Vex didn't understand the Balck Heart and were only worshipping it. It was also said that if the Vex understood paracuasality then the Vex would just flat out win. They would be able to properly predict the future and defeat us. Now they understand the Black Heart and actually created it? They clearly understand paracuasality and I don't understand how we haven't been wiped out by them yet according to previous writing in the story. The entire raid I was just waiting for The Witness to come back through the portal just to move his fingers and destroy us. Nothing seems to make since anymore and nothing holds weight. The major enemy has the powers of a 5yr old using their imagination. The only way we beat The Witness is it fumbling the bag and taking us lightly. Allowing us to gain some power or weaken it while it under estimates us.
It was cheap and lazy. Just reuse the Garden of Salvation again…..

When I was little and first played Destiny I remember that I hated being alone the entire campaign when fighting enemies. The Hive scared me and made me stop playing. But when I got back into it I pushed through and eventually found it fun. In the end I remember jumping for joy when I killed the Black Heart.
The Hive are very terrifying. And the Vex are kind of creepy as well.....
i wasn't little when i started playing D2 and i too found the Hive to be scary haha, i remember running the other way when i saw a Wizard or Ogre
Based on this comment I can tell you're young. Imagine thinking the hive are scary and being as young as you were at the time but playing dead space when it first came out.

when I was little there was only one game that scared me and it was twisted metal 2. When I was fighting black tooth I don't know why that fear started I've always loved clowns I like sweet tooth and such but something with black tooth terrified me to where I had to get my sister to play complete the game lol. I got over it pretty fast because when your sister or brother figures out your fear they're gonna overdo it until your Numb.

It seems a case of doing what had to be done in the moment. Sometimes you just gotta work with what you are given. We knew the black heart was poisoning the traveler so it needed to be destroyed. With new context and new evidence we can go back and investigate how and why this thing did what it did.

Technically it is if you start the New Light quest, get it like in vanilla Destiny 1 but not it’s exotic version, which would be cool to bring back

So there was an issue? I mean I main Ace so I can see why aiming a hand cannon that far up in the air probably wouldn’t have had the desired effect Caiatl yelled out for us to do. Still.. would have been an emotional sucker punch to the heart to have aimed Ace at my Ghost.
Always appreciate Evaze using the original Ghost voice for the callbacks to D1! Keep the memory alive.
Hearing DinkleBot again sure did hit different in the Year of our Witness 2023
So much is beginning to make sense. The Black Heart disabled the Traveler to a lesser extent than the Veil. The Veil also definitely has egregore fungus growing on the bottom of it, egregore transferred Calus's consciousness to the pyramid on Luna, so it makes perfect sense that the Veil has allowed the citizens of Neomuna to upload their own consciousnesses to the Cloud Ark. Drifter has a ton of egregore in his ship, perhaps he found it in the previous location of The Veil after the Witness had acquired it? Drifter is going to be key in the story again soon, I'm sure. So my question now is, what might consciousness transfer have to do with the Traveler? Will it allow us to enter a 'mindscape' at some point to meet the entity controlling the Traveler? And that's provided there is one.
Ive been thinking the same thing about The Drifter. Hes gotta come back soon for something big, cause one of the first cutscenes he was in the nine presented a coin with a pyramid on it and told him "Keep playing the game". Makes me wonder what drifter actually knows or why he is important. Also the nine have been really silent for a while, and yea they aren't obligated at all to talk to mortals but they do seem like they have a big part to play. Or they are already playing it.
no no no no no no and again NO. The Vex do not know what the Black Heart is, its why they worshipped it. The Vex do not understand Paracasuality, its the one thing keeping them in check. The Sol Divisive's entire thing is that they worship it because they dont get it

i remember eris stating that the egregore on the leviathan was an impure form of something, can't remember what. perhaps it is an impure form of the veil, a similar purpose of linking minds, but more parasitic in nature as we see with the dead legionary at the start of season of the haunted or the cabal on the glykon.
It might have something to do with how guardians always lose their memories due to the traveler. It seems to have some control/effect on the minds/consciousness of guardians.
I almost cried when Nimbus made space for Sagira in the Hall of Heroes. It was such a sweet final goodbye to her. 😢
Sagira isn't gone just yet. Osiris will figure out a way to bring her back.

I think Bungie’s bring back a legend from each class. Starting with Saint of course, now Cayde (I’m hoping he returns fully alive with Sundance) and Osiris. Idk that part with Sagira didn’t give me the “that’s a ghost that’s gonna stay dead” vibes.
1:16 God this scene gives me goosebumps. So many memories flooding back from a time when things were simpler
this reminded me how good D1 was cinematically and musically.
That's all it was though. It was otherwise absolutely shallow.

The soundtrack for Lightfall is so good, and it actually holds so much emotion; each time I hear certain tracks. I can kind of feel the emotions of what the characters are feeling. The DLC wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, but the soundtrack made me more interesting than it should have been.

Well given the Black Heart was poisoning the traveller, and the Witness needed it to open the portal to wherever it went - I'm guessing the Veil is linked to the pale heart.
"Your pale heart holds the key"
The key opened the door, and the heart provides the body with life, whilst a poisoned one would kill it. Easy to tie the Veil and the Pale Heart following that logic.
@@Yangy_Young Thats what I am thinking too. Whats interesting is that I bet the veil has never been known by Elisabeth in her previous timelines. The witness was always able to use the black heart to reach the final shape in all other timelines Im guessing
The Black Garden looks so much better in Destiny 1 in my opinion. The colors and aesthetic we have in Destiny 2 doesn’t give the same menacing or intimidating feeling given off in Destiny 1.
I think the destruction of the Black Heart is the reason for that. It's destruction allowed for the Traveler's influence to resurface in the garden which has led to the increased plant growth, and an overall softer appearance.
That's because we're going back to the Garden after the Black Heart is gone, with it being gone; allowed the area to "heal" in a way and have life flourish, seeing as the flowers grow and it's more vibrant that back then. It's sort of a simple concept of you know... Time passing.
The lighting and saturation and contrast of the visuals for the whole of D1 looks better than D2.

@@lazyvoid7107 The black heart? If so, then yea. But the garden itself I think is actually flourishing because the black heart, and conceptual mind are gone. Without the black heart, the light isn't being taken/poisoned by it.
This is how every exotic quest should be. Not kill 10 vex, taken, etc and ploop, you get the exotic

Man the first time me and my friend walked in to the Black Guarden, getting a view over it all, that was amazing.
Anyone else curious how the Vex (who have previously not been able to simulate or understand light or dark forces) created an object that is light or dark by nature? Or maybe that is why it was incomplete and a failure.

the thing I liked about this quest it takes you to the garden of salvation raid encounters then the final boss is the starting area of that raid.

Funny thing is that everyone is complaining that the Story of Lightfall didn't tell us anything and left so much open questions... i thought that too at first. But on the other hand doesn't exactly that make us come back, explore.. seeking for every bit of Lore we can find to figure out what actually is going on and is the Traveler really dead? Where did the Witness go and can we follow the Witness inside the Traveler? Will we call Elsie for help to discover different Timelines and figure out how we can stop it? And where the hell is Eris this whole time? I came to the conclusion that the lack of information is actually a blessing that keeps us curious. Sure the lack of emotions and empathy from the Story Characters is a shame and a big fail of Bungie, but not the Story overall.. that is my personal opinion about it

What if the black heart is the Vex’s attempt at merging timelines into one, that can still be deemed a creation of the vex but also still have the paracausality of the veil. Vex were trying to push something from all timelines into one place which then became the black heart, like everything all at once manifesting in one area?
The Sol Divisive were basically kicked out of the Vex collective due to worshipping the dark, or because of what was created in the black garden raid.
The closest thing the vex have to merge timelines was Atheon and all the lore surrounding that.
I mean, we have every iteration of the vex in that raid; past, present and future

Doubtful. The Black Heart was created by the Sol Divisive who were distinctly separate from the rest of the Vex network due to their connection to darkness.
Atheon was the Vex's attempt at merging all timelines. That's why his title was 'Time's Conflux'.
i feel like the veil is going to be another traveler type entity where it’s just a giant mass of darkness, just like the traveler is a giant mass of light. the traveler also have the big dark spot on its bottom, showing it’s entanglement with darkness. i’m guessing the veil’s lightshow is it’s entanglement with the light. my guess is that the veil and the traveler were once whole and now they split.
Hard to believe the cloudstriders have held off the vex at all, but then even on Europa I guess Clovis fended them off.

I really hope D3 looks like D1 but better. Everything seems so much more darker and scarier looking. If we actually lose when fighting the witness and such, it'll be another dark age. Darker than anything we've seen. Hopefully we get Dinklebot back too.

Well here's the thing, it's probably meant to look lighter, I've said this to many other people but you got to remember that the black heart is gone. The light is actually allowed to touch the garden allowing to be more colorful, with flowers that spinkle the ground like abstract art. But if you are talking more about the whole games then it probably has to do with graphics. I mean older games tend to look darker and washed out, but I'm not trying to say that can't recreate that. To me, I love how bright and colorful d2 looks, it's beautiful. But like you said, when the time is right, they should give it that darker feel.
Ah the music and the atmosphere in D1 was just superb
The way Brass gardeners read. Bruh. Even what we learned might have been a lie. It almost suggests that the black heart was planted there, the undying mind seems to be the vex in that lore page and from it's perspective the heart was disrupting life on the garden. That the witness placed it there. There's the suggestion of harmony after we removed it.
Myelin mentioned an inconsistency. The vex cant replicate paracausal power, so really the black heart should be of vex origin rather than darkness. Idk if I missed it where they explain that
The vex can replicate paracasality under the right circumstances if someone or something imbues them with it. The vex mind Quaria was taken but Oryx allowed it to have most of it's free will. This allowed Quaria to replicate the power to take and would continue the loop of the dreaming city curse.
They can't replicate it in simulations, doesn't mean they can't build a paracausal machine
I just realized something, in the new raid we connect light and dark for protection from wipe mechanics right? What if the veil allows something sorta similar? Maybe by linking it (darkness) with the Traveler (light) it allows access to a protected place, such as inside the traveler? In this case the Witness is using it to get into some place presumably for the traveler’s heart though for whatever reason it may want that

This is one of my favorite exotic missions. TO ME this mission made me like lightfall more. I like Nimbus more because of this mission and I felt that the story of destiny and this campaign, has been made “clearer” with this mission as well.
Dude thank you yes. I was kinda iffy on nimbus, I mean I liked they're personality but sometimes it would be a little too much especially for this kind of situation. But literally after this mission I liked them alot more. And I think they're joking personality really did emphasize how much losing Rohan hurt them, by using the contrast of that nimbus to the nimbus who lost Rohan.
I ran on that rooftop many times, and now i see this gun sitting there for the first time? I need to be more observant lol.
Kinda cool how we just recently find traveler uses creation abilities, and we see the black heart using some form of creation to bring the statue vex to life.
I love that they seem to truly have had a 10 year plan.
Did they? Maybe it's a short story but padded by filler for expansions? lots of the original content was just backstory on the races like House of Wolves, Warmind, and many of the raid lore.

Does anyone else got the dialogue from the Lost sector on nemuna Gilded Precept from ghosts saying he can still bring us back but he doesn't feel the comfort of the traveler on his back anymore but the comfort is coming deeper
maybe the black garden is a simulation of a garden inside the traveler, a simulation of the original "garden" like the black heart is a copy of the original veil aka the pale heart that is linked to the traveler

Veil - is not the pale heart. Portal on Traveler - the pale heart. Veil - is the key from him.
i have yet to do the lmg quest line and i always wondered why Nimbus didnt seem sad. its because his grieving is in the quest line

The lore explained that the Black heart was found by the Vex and they couldn’t figure out what it was nor could they simulate it due to it being paracasual so they worshipped it.

I don’t mind retcons as long as they make sense or are explained in a logical way. These are not. It’s Curse of Osiris all over again. Like before, you’re a bigot if you don’t like it.
@MrRandomCan The problem is that 343 didn’t put much thought into their retcons. For example: I remember Bungie explaining why Halo: Reach had characters and tech never seen before. S-IIIs were still budget Spartans. Noble Team had optimal genetics to take advantage of the chemical augmentations. Noble Team still lacked the physical bioaugmentations. Mark V[b] was a handicapped version of MJOLNIR so it wouldn’t kill Noble Team. The Covenant they fight were a relic hunting faction separate from the regular Covenant Navy. All of that is lost. Now everybody and their grandmother can become a Spartan. Take the chemical cocktail and the gen 2 suit makes up the difference, rather than being limited to meet the weaknesses of the user.
NuBungie has been retconning for years. First one I remembered was when they decided to change Osiris and Saint's relationship from brothers-in-arms, sibling-rivalry brotherhood into a gay romance because they can't fathom people of the same gender just being close without being gay. Then they retconned Guardians being able to use the Light after losing their Ghost - Eris Morn's case being horrific because she had her Light devoured too - because the new writers forgot about all that and just saw Eris ghostless and Lightless and figured the same could happen to Osiris so Savathun could sneak into his place and infiltrate the tower, and also to raise tension in Season of the Chosen(?) with Zavala becoming temporarily mortal through his ghost Targe being shut down. There's more, but those are the ones that stick out most to my recollection.

Hey just out of curiosity does the cloud striders life span go by Earth years or Neptune years cause I thought about if they only live for ten years after there upgrades a single year on Neptune would be 165 earth years so times ten that 1650 years
They probably out living every guardian and earthling if that's the case

the black heart looks like strand but strand is string theory so it looks like the graphical representation of quantum particles in 9 dimensions or something.
so if it's something that simulates the veil, then the veil is a quantum machine or motor I think
When that picture pops up around 16:40, I still think about what the Drifter is hauling around. I feel like I've read/listened to some of the lore but can't quite remember at this moment.

So the black heart's creator was at the garden all this time ? We have been there twice and never encountered it.. we then find the veil and suddenly the witness decides to destroy it ?? Dam... The story is written by a sith grade student...
Why is there one specific sort of gravestone of a cloud strider that's broken? Suspicious & strange, maybe another random rabbit hole but may hold some cool parts about the story or even some answers.

It's becoming more and more clear that the ending of this all is gonna be us reuniting with all of our past enemies, YEs Oryx included, somehow, and we will all be fighting against the witness. Literally in a life vs death showdown. And I'm pretty sure We will actually reach out to imaru to bring back savathun. We will need savathun and Oryx together to take out Xivu Arath, who ends being more powerful then the other two sisters because she is literally thew embodiment of the sword logic. I also think there will be a reveal about Oryx knowing the truth about the worm familiar lying about the god wave, and this will play in to him actually joining our side. but thats just my theory, a game theory.

@Matthew Donovan He is dead, but his heart is in Touch of Malice. Theoretically, he could be revived by either the Hive ghosts or possibly another source of light could mend his body and heart back together, like the traveller's beam revived Nezarec.
interesting, the true question is, if the witness is so powerful (as showcased) then why is he relying on his disciples and allies to do everything, stop the vanguard, our guardian, etc? he himself could have done it right? or pherphaps not? he is obsessed with "the final shape" its not said what he meant by that, final shape of what? but, what if, he is referring to himself? he looks like a anatural being, a being who has been perfected somehow, and its aparently very old, at least almost as old as the traveler, whenever he uses his powers we notice he has some sort of "lagging" almost as if he has other versions of himself from other dimensions fused with himself, but, unstable pherphaps, his suit also looks like a working machine, we can see it moving constantly, almost like if he is the one mantaining the fusion, we also see inumerous faces coming out of the witness head, and his voice also has a mix with male and female voices, wich would be explained by his other versions of other dimensions/parallel realities, so here goes my theory, the witness has been involved with the darkness for a long time, gaining more and more power, until at one point he reached a limit, not a limit made by the darkness, a limit made by his own body, just like every being (non gods) have limits, biological ones, like us, so he finds himself not being able to get more powerful because in the end, his power was nothing more than darkness pilled up inside his body until he reached the maximum his body could handle (just like a cup filled with water) then while being frustrated because he wants to become a god, he then started having disciples, not only to get power (like an army) but also to have support in finding a way for him to get rid of his limits, at some point he discovers the traveler and his power of light, and what it can do, and so starts persuing it, we know that process took a while (a lot of time actually) so, in the meantime, the witness had an ideia, "what if i mix myself with my others selfs from another realities into one, my biggest limitation would perish" and so he does that (in the beyond light expansion we came to know of an exo who came from another reality, the same one who guides us in the way of obtaining the stasis subclass and buy the fragments for it) after he did that, he did became way more powerful than he once was, but now two things happened, he had this "lagging" issue wich not only means he is not completely fused, it can also mean everytime he uses his powers he suffers backlashes, wich can also explain why he avoids using his powers and makes his disciples do the things instead, the secong issue would be that even tho is one of the strongest beings in the universe (that we all know of) he isin't the all mighty yet, he realized that he needed the power of light for himself to not only became more powerful in terms of raw power but also to make a balance beetween darkness and light, and to also modify himself to "the final shape" in wich he would be able to control both darkness and light at will, while being immortal, untouchable, absolute supreme, no one would be able to make anything against him, guardians would loose their powers (most likely) but even if they didn't they would probably be killed very easily since he would be so supreme, no gods would be able to touch him, since he has both powers, they would either become his underlings or just get killed by him, it would be a matter of time until he starts killing every one who is against him, and only letting the ones who submit to him live, he would have the universe all for himself, since he fused himself with his other selfs, and the exo woman from another reality says that from where she came from darkness had conquered everything, maybe theres also the chance that the witness will also fuse all the realities into one, that would have a even greater meaning of "the final shape" since it would not be only his final shape but also the universe final shape, the whole existence, if he did that, after taking his power of light and darkness that where from all the realities, he would then be perfectly fused, evolved into a new shape, and with complete control over the whole darkness and the whole light that ever existed, he would truly become the all mighty, the strongest being, of course the story will not get to that end, we are meant to stop him alfter all, but at least a fragmented reality for us to go against him with another self of us from another reality or another character who already died (like cayde) to join us against the witness, would be super awesome.

I still miss dinklebot
I don't know if its controversial but I wish Bungie would bring Dinklage back. People complained back in D1 that Dinklebot was depressing and morose, like, that's kind of the tone Bungie was going for until they wanted to add retarded emotes that makes everyone look like some tofu farting fairy or weeaboo dancing in a world that been barely holding on. Yeah I'd feel like life was a bit bleak the rest of the world/star system was destroyed by forces that want nothing more than to kill is because some alien sphere appeared before us without us asking.

They just go along with it, read theories then talk with the actual game devs about what is possible with the current version of the game.
It's dragged out, hanging on thin ice since splitting from their publisher and they are desperately trying to make as much money as possible in the smartest most predatory ways they can. Is what it is but I'd like to see the game die now. 8/9 years of time wasting and wasting money needs to stop. I would hope for the Witness to kill people off and it be a sad ending regardless of "winning" but even then its bungie so it'll probably be some cringe uninteresting ending.
