    Just discovered this guy's channel, though I purchased his ''Chess principles reloaded'' a year or two ago. I only just started working through this book which could just as easily have been titled ''Operation mindshift!''. I heartily recommend it to anyone having hit a wall rote-memorizing openings and coming up short for ideas in the middlegame: you will always find an answer pondering the center and your place relative to it, after having worked through his course.
    As for this series, I love the premise and can't believe our luck to have such a strong player comment a weaker player's thought process as it unfolds during a game. It is plain to see he is authentically invested in that player's thinking, hoping she will awaken to obvious tactical implications, encouraging her to break the boundaries of facile and non commital evaluations, celebrating when she sees a useful line and follows through on it. Very good stuff here all around. So kudos to all concerned for having participated in this noble and enlightening experiment. I look forward to discovering the rest of this creator's content.
    Edit: just realized I'm already subscribed to the channel! lol

    This series is awesome. As a beginner I can rly identify with this sort of content. It's a big difference from you playing a game commenting on it. Even if it is instructive too, here you rly cover gaps you wouldn't if you'd play your own game. These gaps are exactly what I'm looking for when I want to improve by watching a video. Keep up this great work Andras, thanks.

      In my games, often times, I don't care if I double my pawns (unless the position is not dynamic and the doubled pawns are on an open file or near my king); I care about my piece activity and material advantage and not making tactical mistakes. The computer doesn't seem to care too much about a bad pawn structure (unless it's a pure king and pawn ending or the opponent can immediately attack them in a good way, i.e., pawns are on open files or give the opponent good outposts for his knights); the computer cares more about material, attacking possibilities (sometimes the evaluation is +4 even though material is equal because of a kingside attack), and piece activity/outposts.

    One thing re. reducing the number of candidate moves is obviously a good point (i'm not saying you aren't right!) But, as someone in that range from 900-1500, i think the discussion amy had at 18:20 (and on a bit) re. play c5,c4 and trapping the bishop I think isn't being overwhelmed by candidate moves but rather that Amy has enough tactical nous to recognize that there should be a tactic (because white is so pasive and their pieces are so oddly placed) but failing to see Re8 means that Amy is grasping for other moves that would immediately punish the white position. The point, generally, that I'm trying to make, is that lower rated players often find their opponents not playing theory (i.e., bad moves) which they know instinctively should be punishable but failing to find immediate refutation (or, perhaps, there not being an immediate tactical refutation in the position) start searching for things and thats when calcualtion and principles fall by the way-side. However, a really good video throughout!

    27:30 Good to understand WHY the LSB is bad in French lines??? You block the poor thing in on move 1 with your e-Pawn… but it’s only bad so long as it remains blocked in. Soon as you trade or push pawns and open the Bishop, its potential energy increases!
    This is another reason to NOT bother memorizing general statements or rules of thumb Unless you understand what it means fundamentally and when your best move is to ignore or break the rule!
    They say to avoid moving a piece more then once in the opening… but what if you move your Knight, then your opponent offers you a fork? So you fork then take. Then they attack your Knight… but you can save it. So you move it again. Then they push a pawn and a juicy outpost for the Knight opens up… So you move it twice more to jam that Knight smack in the heart of your opponent’s position. There’s 6 moves of the same piece in the opening… all 6 possibly the best moves in the position.

    Awesome idea for a series, I see great potential for "Inside Your Head."
    To me the most telling comment was when she was talking about her bad "French" bishop, while earlier saying she was more comfortable against the Advance. This suggests a preference for the static stereotypical French plan of piling up on d4. Leaning heavily on static catchphrases and plans is detrimental to adapting to the fluid state of the chessboard (which was no longer a French by move 4), I'd say she should start playing some 1. e5. Just my two cents.

      You raise a good point, but I don't think her playing the French is the problem, more that lower-rated players are very dogmatic to theoretical moves like you said, and do not adapt to the actual position.

      @@ChessCoachAndras Thanks for replying. I first learned chess as a kid, back when Bobby Fischer was heading to the world championship. Then I gave it up for a few decades, so ... I've forgotten where I read it. But maybe you can ask your current students? For instance, amy_space clearly doesn't like them. She must have read that or heard that somewhere.
      It could be a really interesting question! Where are players around 1000 ELO getting overly general advice?
      Thanks for all the great content!

    • @michaels4255
      @michaels4255 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, doubled pawns are a weakness, but mainly in the endgame IF the game gets that far. Even then, they are usually not a fatal weakness depending on the position. They also offer a small weakness in the middle game, but usually you get some offsetting compensation such as an open or half open file, or an extra pawn to push toward the center or adjacent center square.

    • @juleslondon3088
      @juleslondon3088 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second the point about deeper explanation of why Re8 “wins the game on the spot.” Materially it just appears to win a pawn and I’d guess that as you say the large dynamic advantage which accompanies that wouldn’t be apparent to most players below master level. I like that @ChessCoach Andras videos are generally high level and I’ve found in quite a few others that similar “obvious game-winning advantages” are not sufficiently explained to be obvious to me. Naroditsky by contrast typically offers suitable explanations, though he’s fairly unique in that in my experience.

Andras says this around 19:11, and I have seen numerous other coaches talk about this notion of "winning instantly". Do they mean winning material? winning the game? I feel like when I hear this, IMs and GMs are really saying "winning the game". But, I would love some more elaboration on this. Thoughts anyone?

    11:52 I often have doubled pawns when playing white lol, cause Bg3 Bxg3 hxg3. That's not bad because it opens up the h-file for the rook and if the game progresses that far they generally tend to get undoubled anyway. In a pawn endgame on the other and I love for my opponents pawns to doubled and blocked by a single pawn of mine lol.

    Sir are you aware of Chess King Learn application, if yes, then can I use it to train myself in openings, strategies, tactics, endgames ?

    my issue with evaluating the position isnt my ego, its that i genuinely dont know if im better - the opponent could make 1 move next and Im in big trouble which I did not forsee, even if i thought my position is solid.

    If you could talk more about doubled pawns and isolated pawns and when they are good and bad... then that would be awesome!

    * light bishop can pin white's queen and win it *
    Amy: This is a bad bishop in the French so I'm gonna sacrifice it for a pawn.
    🤣 I'm just making some light-hearted fun guys.

      We all have trash thoughts during a game that are easily refuted in retrospect. The difference is that I put them out there for the world to see and criticize.

      @@amyshaw2340 Well.. I hope one day you'll gain the skill and humour to laugh at yourself and French bishop comment. It's not criticism it's humour. No one's good at chess compared to engine.

    I'm grateful for videos rather than this than videos where GothamChess does videos of 400 ELO players to insult their play. There is a place for his videos of course, but prefer these as very respectfully done
