    Thank you for your candid review. Rebellion is my favorite board game (along with Twilight Struggle and Axis & Allies), and it's encouraging to hear that this expansion is WORTH IT.
    I must say, as someone who grew up loving Axis & Allies style combat, I never had a big problem with Rebellion's combat engine. But if this is an upgrade on that, then sign me up.
    Although, my friends and I -never- follow the "limit 5 dice" rule. Always gotta have MORE explosions.

    Thanks for the review Cody, knowing its out in the wild is getting me more excited.
    I can see 3 reasons why you would use the new ships/vehicles, the green dice allow you to increase your dice pool beyond the 5 black, 5 red dice limit. They trigger the new abilities on your combat cards (2 for alliance, 3 for imperials) and their more flexible when assigning damage, since they can hit black and red targets.

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I can see that. I just don't know if it's enough overall to justify them over other ships. I'll need to play it some more.

      Matt Crawford I think that's the key with the new units. If your fleet/army is maxed out on possible red and black dice, adding a few green units increases the chances of hits even more. Plus, the tactics cards for the new units appear to be heavily focused on support or unique effects (like the U-Wing's ability to rescue captured leaders).

    Great review! One of my favorite games of all time so this expansion will be an auto-buy once I can get my hands on it.
    I don't live in Dallas but my work brings me there a few times a year. Next visit will be in late-Nov. I'll reach out a few weeks before to coordinate. Would be totally fun!

    I'm glad they've designed this to use the new combat rules with the base game content. I'd like to be able to jump around to different eras. Maybe a Clones Wars expansion down the road?

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I recall, FFG said a while back they weren't going to do any Star Wars games set in the prequel series. Rebellion does have some worlds/artwork from the prequels, but it is generally set in the original trilogy. Still, who knows what they've got planned or what they'll come up with.

    I appreciate the review Cody!
    I think the Green Dice add an interesting decision as far as re-rolls in combat go. There's now an interesting heirarchy for re-rolling dice. If you're trying to do damage Let's say you're trying to do more damage to a black HP unit. If all of your black dice are hits, and Red and Green dice are misses, you'll always choose to re-roll your green dice. Re Rolled Red to Red will always do damage 75% of the time. Re Rolled Green to any will always do damage 55% of the time. And Re-Rolled Red to Black or Black to red, will always do damage 30% of the time. So really I think they are there as sort of a damage buffer, and help combat not end up so lop-sided.
    My biggest frustration with combat in Rebellion, is that it so heavily favors the attacker in smaller skirmishes. Which means the Rebellion starts out, somehow, obscenely powerful, and capable of capitalizing on the Empire deployment mistakes in comical fashion. I think that the green dice even this out significantly in later stages. It makes combat more reliable and bloodier, which de-incentivizes the Early game, and late game "Rebellion Combat Campaign".

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. Thanks for the viewpoint!

    • @vttsu
      @vttsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The advantage has swung to the defender in the expansion. As far as Im aware the new blocked damaged mechanic means that the attacker doesn't have chance to block damage from the round they are rolled (only remove damage from a previous round), and blocks rolled in the first round won't help the attacker and they can't save units that were completely destroyed.
      Some of the new tactic cards change the order you roll so its something you can plan around.

  • @vttsu
    @vttsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You might choose the tie striker over the fighter when your one of your fleets is already rolling 5 black dice or if the rebels have a lot of red hp ships (green being slightly better then black for this). The other reason of course is to take advantage of its special power in the tactic cards.

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed. Thanks!

    • @weprintplastic
      @weprintplastic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just picked up this expansion for Christmas... was watching the video, and figured someone had already chimed in to answer this... and here it is ;) It does seem logical... the green dice units augment the red/black dice to add just a little more punch... then the Tie Striker is nice specifically because it has a card for BOTH the Space Tactics and Ground Tactics set... makes it flexible and very useful in both theaters of combat!

      You couldn't retreat if your base was under attack anyway. If you leave it, you lose. You'd need to start the evacuation beforehand.

    We use to say in my country "Seuls les cons ne changent jamais d'avis!" (only the ass#@&%$ never change their mind)! So OK: I have to admit I recently changed my mind about the ROTE expansion of SWR! After being disappointed twice and having sold it back twice, a friend of me made me play SWR again with the expansion ... And it was great! He used to play (and we still play) with some very few & light adjustments that seems to have a success on the forums:
    1) We mix the BASE + ROTE mission decks while removing all the duplicate cards (so we don't choose deck)!
    2) We randomly prepare the objectives decks (5+5+5) shuffling ALL the cards (so the DS plans may be in or not)!
    3) We give the 5 starting systems probe cards to the Empire player instead of removing them from the game!
    4) We always start with the BASE setup and never with the ROTE setup (who favors the Empire too much)!
    Best regards - May the force be with you - GG
