Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill becomes Northern Ireland’s first nationalist first minister

  • Stormont has finally been restored and for the first time in 103 years it's not a unionist at the helm. Making history Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill, who's become the first nationalist to lead Northern Ireland - a state she wants to abolish. She's pledged to be a "first minister for all" and will share power with Emma Little-Pengelly from the Democratic Unionist Party - who's been nominated deputy first minister.
But two years of political paralysis, with the government effectively on auto-pilot, have left them with a long list of problems to tackle.

As a person of mixed heritage from the north of Ireland, I want to believe that power-sharing in Stormont will work into the future well to help solve practical problems for the peoples in the six counties that need attention, gaining more and more faith that this will be so by listening both to the words of Michelle O'Neill and to the words of Emma Little-Pengelly. This area is the birthplace of, among many others, James Galway, Roma Downey, Van Morrison, and Liam Neeson. The children are the future. It is time to build through mutual respect, bringing out the best of the peoples who share a home together.

Michelle O'Neill seems to be a very capable person and she certainly leaves me with a good impression. The real test of course, starts now. Emma Little-Pengelly seems to have been a good choice to work with her as Deputy First Minister. They both got off to a good start with their speeches. However, with the likes of TUV Leader Jim Allister and other dinosaurs, the pair have their work cut out. I wish them luck and I hope they can move Northern Ireland forward and by doing so, lessen the voice of the political dinosaurs and make working together the norm. I do believe that Northern Ireland will eventually unite with the Republic, but they first need to demonstrate that Nationalists and Unionists of the younger generations can work together. I believe that Michelle and Emma have a good chance of doing that.

It's a more suitable term as these people migrate through many countries to reach Ireland. They don't immigrate to each country on the way. The open borders no longer requires that. To emigrate, which is what you are referring to, is legally moving directly out from one country to another. I can't see mass emigration being popular in Ireland yet. The UK government I have always said Tories will bring about the demise of the union they are doing a great job of that all by themselves..
The three nations the citizens all can't be wrong.
For sure huge changes are coming just a matter of time.
The Tories want to retain the same old old as it suits them very well indeed. The problem with that UK becomes static and only works for the few never for the majority.
Nothing remains the same have to embrace change. Tories and ilks do not do that have not and will not. The citizens will, probably not be citizens within England maybe will but they sadly keep voting Tories. However change just a matter of time despite what the UK government wants. So tick tock goes the clock. Time stops for no one.

The real problem with Ulster becoming part of the republic is the difference in wages and benefits between the two parts of Ireland. Either Eire would have to continue higher pay,or most people who voted for a united ireland would take a pay cut. After all,how could an Irish government justify paying higher wages and benefits to one of its provinces? What would people in Galway or Mayo think about their taxes paying for a higher standard of living for Ulster than they get?

You do realise 3 counties of ulster are already part of the republic right? People who work in and around Dublin already get paid more than other parts of the country due to the cost of living the same thing happens in London compared to other parts of the uk due to their cost of living these are all things that already happen but don’t worry once a United ireland does happen it will all get sorted out
