The Super Bowl is often used by networks to debut their new scorebug, the box at the bottom of broadcasts displaying the score and other information, for the next year.
Fox Sports did so for Super Bowl LIX and the result was ... probably not what the network wanted. While many scorebugs take some getting used to, many found the new one on Fox to be large, distracting and overly minimalist.
Simply put, it looked like the kind of graphics you see on local broadcasts for high school games.

very clean. love the minimalist take. been wanting for years.
I found that I didn’t look or see the stats in the bottom right very often. It wasn’t information overload but I’m not sure I like it!
I like it
I like it
No. Fox as usual messes everything up. Fox sucks.
This looks like a video game developer made a football game, and at the last second, they were told they weren't able to get the NFL licensing before the game released
Score disappears in snow games lol
good point!
I could barely see the score.
😂😂😂
That's the Buffalo advantage! Never let the opponent know the score! 😅
There's a small outline on the scores if that ever happens.
10 years at ABC/ESPN and to me, this looks like a high school production class developed it!
MS Paint 3.0
I think they were going for the retro 70's/80's graphics
High school productuon from someone who forgot to finish the assignment
@@reverend_wintondupreeYeah. Definitely not a “trend.” Wokeness has infected Fox lol. They are the wokest.
Simple, elegant, and useful for showing as much of the game as possible while also showing the score and additional stats. To be charitable to you, I’d assume your high school is a specialty school for graphic design, I guess?
As a 30 year veteran of graphic design, my in-depth review of this new design is, "It sucks!"
From someone who is legally blind and usually can't read a scorebug most of the time, this was the most improved one I have experienced.
I still can't read the downs or the stats or the clock but for once I could actually read the score. Might be the most accessible scorebug ever. Still room for improvement though
I am particularly sighted
& I 100% disagree.
The old score bug was way better.
Fr like what the heck is that
I remember everyone getting so excited about that during Super Bowl LIV. Fox shouldn't have changed it.
I like it and the fact that it does not interfere with the actual game footage as much as in the past.
I am sorry but this graphics package sucks.
This scorebug was a giant downgrade from the previous one, and the previous one wasn’t the best either. Right now I’d say CBS has the best scorebug for football games.
I would say NBC has the best & ESPN the worst until this from Fox.
I am particularly sighted
& found Fox's graphics hard work during the Super Bowl.
Fox, no brains at all.
I loved the clean and LARGER graphics. I didn't have to bust out my glasses once! And it gave me old skool vibes
I like your idea of more gradient. Use logos instead of 'KC' and 'PHI' and it's not nearly as bad.
Notice the font used for the letters/numbers on the scorebug is the exact font of FOX itself.
Good observation. I noticed the placement of the KC letters, with the C wedging itself in the angle of the K, much in the same way the O pushes itself into Fox’s X.
I like it. Less graphics more field. Makes my screen feel bigger.
Its alright. I personally like seeing the team logo and abbreviation. That being said I really disliked the previous fox scorebug. Overall an upgrade, I just like seeing the logo of the teams in the scorebug
These almost are a throwback to the big Chryron graphics you would see on 1980s sports/news broadcasts. Back then, a larger black dropshadow was used behind every single letter. Maybe if they just used a bit more of that sort of dropshadow for the letters it would make them pop more.
This new design looks like a Windows PC that started by the graphics engine didn’t load correctly.
100%.
I would change the abbreviation with the teams logo
It’s way too generic
SNES football game without NFL license looking scorebug
Every year I’m always hyped to see the new scoreboard graphic and damn this year has the worst one ever 😒😂. Can’t wait for NBC’s new scoreboard during Super Bowl LX 🌁
I’m probably in the minority, but I absolutely loved it, the whole simplistic package. On my 65” TV, I noticed the new graphics immediately & can’t wait till next season. Pretty sure they will fine tune it even more, after they receive their national audience feedback.
I’m with you … except my TV isn’t as large.
It was simple and easy to read. It did what it's supposed to
but it didn't do it well and it didn't look good, especially in this day and age where graphically speaking, anything is possible.
I'm all for minimalism, but It looks like the graphics didn't load..
The problem I forsee is what about snow/fog games. It will be very hard to see the numbers. Also the game clock and quarter box is a little small. A background to make the graphics pop will help visibility
If they did the team logo instead of KC or PHI it would be so much better
I like them; easier to read and understand from afar
I thought it was a little off putting at first, but grew to not mind and actually appreciate them later on. They blocked less of the field and were easier to read since they were bigger.
I like it because it looks more retro , simple as that 😅
If Fox was going for retro, why not bring back the 94-95 seasons transparent Fox box bug
@@reverend_wintondupreeIt’s cute you think mid 90’s is retro
@@paulo123- Well considering that is the era when the permanent onscreen scorebug began and Fox was the first one to implement it then yes its retro.
I didn't notice it until someone mentioned it via a text chat. I like how well it blends in with the field.
Brodie Brazil you remind me of Bill King ...Holy Toledo..TOUCH DOWN RAIDERS....in other words you are a Oakland legend in the making. Yeah I said it.
It's a throwback in a lot of ways to the original chyrons before fox invented the scorebug graphical arms race with the fox box
I liked the graphics. If you could gradient out Tom Brady and his voice the broadcast would have been perfect!
As a watcher from overseas, I was worried we were gonna get stuck with the crappy international feed graphics we've been stuck with all season so I was so happy we were going to get the Fox graphics here right up until the point I actually saw how they were even worse...
There's a different graphics package for the international feed? What do they look like?
The scorebug appears to be almost the same as the one on NFL Network but with a much more basic font and it uses a basic NFL logo for transitions. Occasionally you get some lower thirds or fullscreen info in some plain boxes but 'basic' is a good word to describe it overall. The feed takes the audio and game camera from whatever network is broadcasting it but doesn't include anything network specific like graphics, logos, advertisements or even the camera angles of the announcers/sideline reporters. You hear them but don't see them.
Hi Brodie Brazil. it looked great to me on the screen it pops great i could read the score and see the time and the quarter great they don't need any sqaure box to make it pop at all it pops already. thank you. andy.
I honestly like it. It’s cleaner and it may seem inconsequential but it’s nice to see a bit more of the field
I noticed it right away... and liked it. Clean, minimalist, easy to read and created more "visible space" on the field of play. I especially liked the large, abbreviated team identifiers with their uniform/team color -- as opposed to their logos. Maybe not as needed for NFL, but if this is exported to their college sports coverage it will really help to quickly know who is playing. I don't know all the college logos, and some are very detailed for a small space.
I will add: I didn't like the two on-field Super Bowl logos. They were too large, not very legible and "misplaced." A couple of times when I was getting snacks/drink I thought they offense was at mid-field, and I had missed a play.
it was pretty hard not to notice
this "minimalist" trend by designers, in my opinion, is just an excuse for all these uncreative and lazy "designers" of today and is actively killing all creativity in the world where we think its ok using a times new roman font and a number thrown on a 55-90in tv screen. no team logo or anything. pathetic. this isnt some mom n pop broadcast, this is Fox
You just described most of the Rams’ rebrand.
Wordmark is Times New Roman. And the rest is mostly lazy.
@ you can thank Nike for that too
There's a difference between being minimalist and just being lazy. And this is the latter.
@ it feels so minimalist it has become lazy
@@maddrone7814 btw, nice avatar!!!
Rams + LA Kings old purple-gold + Lakers all in one?
It caught my attention right away. I was watching on Tubi, and my immediate reaction was that Tubi was using their own graphics package.
It initially looked like something that they would use if they were having technical difficulties with the 'normal' bug. But as the game went on, my eyes adjusted.
I like it better than most of the other broadcast graphics packages for NFL games; real throwback style.
I actually kinda like them! It’s sleek and minimalist. (Kind of like the Apple TV+ info graphics for MLB baseball games.)
2025 MLB W/S = Phillies Athletics aka Philly series.
it grew on me
The only thing I'd change is making the clock a little larger. Overall, I like it.
If you look at the graphics closely , it resembles the fox logo ( the logo they've been using since 1994 , when they first had football " I was 16 yrs. Old back then... " )
Noticed it and really liked it. So much easier to read without squinting at the screen all the time.
I love the information presented in this video as I feel it offers a balanced perspective on how the new graphics are being used. While I don't personally appreciate the minimalism of the whole package, I do like them using the extra room for other stats. Although in past years, they were already doing that while using the same space for the same information in a few different scorebugs with more info.
I know that less is more a lot of the time, but there's too much (if this makes any sense), that's what I believe is the main issue here.
I miss the days of championship logos being over the top, being a massive patch on jerseys. Instead of these sleek and slim ones we see nowadays
Looks like something from the first Super Bowl broadcast which is not a good look for FOX in 2025
Thanx for doing a video on this,I liked it it's clean & simple
It's a tradition that the networks add something new during their Super Bowl broadcast.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who geeks out over this stuff. I'm not a football fan, but I appreciate a good broadcast, and hey-It's the Superbowl, I had to watch.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. The whole package reminded me of films I saw of old baseball and other sports games from when they first started introducing on-screen text. Maybe that's sort of what they were going for here? A retro-esque vibe?
It'll be interesting to see what they come up with for NASCAR next. -Luke
I actually really like the simplicity. I enjoy the simplified giant three/two letter codes for the teams and how clear it is to tell who has possession of the ball. I think the score numbers could use some outlining though.
I still think CBS has and always had for a long time had the best graphic package
I liked it. It reminded me of watching games in 1984.
Are you the new “Czar of the telestrator?” 😂😂 I have to admit, nobody noticed any of this where I was at. But, they did well I think.
I would imagine in snow/fog they would switch from white font to a darker font. Kinda similar to when they superimpose the yardage lines on rhe snowfield
I don't know why sports networks do this. If you're going to debut your score bug, do it in the preseason, not the last game of the season. That way, fans have time to get used to the change and networks can test it to see if the fans will go along with it. It gives the networks a chance to revert or pivot to something else if need be.
With regard to your small screen/device comment, it makes sense except for the fact that there's minimal letter spacing. On a small screen, the letters run the risk of blending together. Picture someone watching this on a cell phone in portrait orientation and you'll see what I mean.
They also should have used the logos to go with the team initials. The issue in this case, even with the large initials, is that the solid background colors could be confusing for people with deuteranopia or deuteranomaly. The logo with a slim font to allow for better letter spacing makes this a big improvement. Without the logos, the broadcast gives the vibe of a video game that couldn't afford to license the full team names/player names/logos and just used the location name instead.
I'm with you on the translucent background. it needs to be behind the text. It also needs to be behind the timeout counters as well.
I'm not with you on that font. That font is terrible. The letter heights are somewhat inconsistent, the spacing is even more inconsistent even by non-monospaced font standard (see around the A in "FACT"), and it's not clean. Look at the font you use for your bullet points and other notes by comparison. it's much cleaner, the spacing is much better, and you appear to have put a slight drop shadow just to make sure that there's separation from text and background.
I like the overall concept of what they were trying to do and what they were trying to achieve. It just looks to me like something that went through endless testing and was a compromise on the part of some poor guy in the FOX graphics department trying to come up with a compromise of about 50 different opinions from focus group testing.
I loved the new graphics package. I agree it needs some tinkering to get it to differentiate from background. That could be done easily without a box though.
Put a black box behind it but make it like 70% or more transparent
They then should just bring back the Blackbox graphics they used from 2017-17. Similar concept just bigger/bolder font
Stats can be on your phone, if you want them, look it up. I don't need shit to be constantly vomited up at me, I'm trying to watch the game not read stats, it's like watching something with subtitles on, it's irritating and pointless.
Cleaner and much easier to read. A marked improvement. I am sure they can change the colors to deal with snow. I am there to watch the game - not to be wowed by the graphics dept.
i don’t hate it! readability could be improved like you said in the video but overall i like the direction they’re trying to go in
Can’t wait how FOX uses tonight’s graphics package on MLB and the postseason/World Series. Especially how it’ll be now four seasons since their last graphics update for baseball (2021 WS, HOU v. ATL).
Any games in the snow should be interesting
I like bigger numbers, I don’t like the transparency. Honestly miss the corner ones
10:40 "It's a little bit hard to read that score."
Especially if you are a Chiefs fan :)
LOVE the new Fox graphics. Fox always innovates. That's why they're the best.
I like it. They should have done that years ago.
I have astigmatism, glaucoma and cataracts…I had no problem reading this package
I remember watching your video ranking the MLB score bugs. It's older but I liked the NBC bug. It had a black backdrop which made the text and logos pop, and it had a subtle rounded glass look to it that made it look far more attractive than a simple black rectangular box would otherwise be. I think what FOX has here is overly simple, and it's even inconsistent, as you showed an example of them using a border in the lower third to frame a graphic during halftime. Obviously every network wants their own spin on things, but I'd like to use the logos instead of text wherever possible, and a sem-transparent backdrop to help text pop and not compete with other screen elements.
I don't always like the minimalistic approach to graphics, but I thought it looked good here. It's not the most attractive scorebug, but the score was nice and big and a lot easier to read, which I appreciate. I agree with you that it could be improved with a gradient background, but I don't mind it.
Not a fan, I didn't watch the game but I seen Taylor Shift got booed, love it,
Took me a bit but I like the new graphics and they made it look retro by not having colors on the name.
Bro the prime video graphics look way more professional then thid, I could recreate this in 5 minutes
Thanks for doing this, Brodie. Agree with so many of the criticisms. I have experience designing graphic overlays, and while I can appreciate the minimal aesthetic…the FOX broadcast lacks a lot of craft compared to Apple TVs MLS and MLB broadcasts.
The overlay has too many disjointed elements. Too many tiny containers over the video. I’d feel better if it was contained in a solid bar at the bottom or organized better typographically.
I love Apple TV graphics and presentation of MLB! The screen is taken over by the action/field/players.. the camera angles are the best in the business.. game commentation and broadcasting can continue to improve, but I feel Apple TV's baseball telecasts are very underrated!!
It seems like another case of "the more things change, the more they stay the same". These graphics remind me of graphics from 40 years ago, only the color is much better.
I like it, now could someone talk to CBS about getting rid of the unneeded scroll at the bottom of their games like Fox has done???
As the game progressed, I grew to like this package more and more. I think the boldness of the numbers in the score gives it the contrast it needs - we don’t need a background. Remember the scorebug that Fox first introduced in NFL in 1995 or so, just white on a transparent background (albeit with a border around the clock and a different border around the score). The boxy geometric look, also pioneered by Fox, is on its way out. My only real complaint is the play clock hovering over the field, that was awkward.
Fully agree that the green-screen backdrop behind the announcers was awful. It was awkward and confusing to me - and reminded me of the Covid-era games that would be broadcast from a studio - except they were standing up, making it even more awkward.
The one thing I didn’t like was the separate count down for down timing, instead of changing the color to red. You had to look for it instead of looking at the countdown clock.
Easier to look at, screen logos and text
They have been doing green screen for a while I’m pretty sure if you look back when green screen was getting popular there were broadcasters talking as if they were in the crowd and the green screen was bleeding through the video.
As a designer I love it, but people don’t like change so that’s probably the biggest reason people are bagging it
@12:27 in the sb the NFL logo is the ONLY logo at midfield. You were right about the superbowl logo being at quarterfield
Not a fan of these new graphics 👎🏻
As somebody who doesn't watch much football, I like it better than the old Fox national package because it contains the team names, so i dont have to remember the logos. I agree that the bug needs some kind of gradient for separation. I timks Prime's score bug is probably the best (football wise).
I like it a lot. They took a page out of the social media playbook. Looks like a instagram story. People are used to text over video these days.
The Chiefs’ 3-peat bid went down the drain.
On many occasions, I thought the play clock was the game clock. Overall I like it, but it definitely needs some work.
Kind of like the cartoon Shohei Ohtani during the World Series, indicating how many batters away he is.
I really like the main scorebug. The main thing that I'd change is that I'd put the scores with the same background as the team initials. One I really hate is CBS, you can't easily tell who has the ball. In this version, that's not a problem.
I'm now in the older crowd (60) and back in the 1970s, things were even more minimalist given the technological limitations. All you might see during a play is the down and distance and maybe an inset of the actual scoreboard clock. You'd often have to wait until a score or a TV ad break to find out the score. And, on some cheaper broadcasts, the graphics looked bad even for that era. In that respect, anything today is better by comparison.
gives all the info all I need
It reminded me of the font size on your grandparent’s phone. Are they catering to old eyes?😂
I like it
I work at an airport, and from where I work the tv is probably at least 100 ft away. From where I was, I could see the score. It usually isn't that easy with other graphics packages. That being said, its not good. I don't like it.
This is a Score Bug YT Channel now
my initial reaction was that it's 70s/80s throwback graphics
It' s ok. I agree with the scores being tough to see at time. The font is OK but I think it should be just a tad thinner.
Don't like it. Feels like a video game score clock.
when watching the highlight I spent almost as much time trying to figure out what the down and distance was as I did watching the plays...absolutely hated it...if they never changed it, EVER, no one would complain and they would save money every year
