When old media says things like "Hockey? No one Cares", I went to new media in the form of podcasts. I remember last year hearing about a host from ESPN saying I'm here to talk about Football only when being criticized they were not talking about Baseball because "Nobody Cares" about Baseball. It's attitudes like that that pushed people like me away. New Media allows me to find my niche and interests. I got sick and tired waiting for old media to talk about what I was interested in and then they wouldn't because it didn't bring in the ratings. Right now the thing I hate the most about "New Media" is everyone seemed to jump at a partnership with Draft Kings or Fan Duel or Better Help or one of those companies. I get the need to advertise, but sports betting is now in your face all the time and I just need a breath of fresh air every now and again.
I found myself following youtubers covering my favorite teams. Fans who podcast and livestream. They include their followers to comment, discuss and even hop on the livestream in real time. Has a sense of community to celebrate team victories or use the livestreams as therapy when teams are perennial losers. It's the future of sports media.
I think a really good example of New media vs old media..Herbstreit and Fowler doing traditional booth commentary vs Pat McAfee down in the endzone calling his version of the game. It was nice to have those options during the college football playoffs.
In the media world as a whole Howard Stern was the first person to break away from traditional network radio when he signed a deal with SiriusXM. Everyone thought he was crazy for leaving CBS radio. Today CBS Radio doesn’t even exist. I would also note Conan O’Brien as someone who began podcasting as a joke. He found that he liked not having to wear a suit and being able to talk to 1 guest for an hour with no interruption vs 2 guests and a band at 5 minutes a piece. As podcasting and TH-cam become more profitable the cost to broadcast on these platforms will rise. Legacies like Sirius and Discovery have invested heavily in Conan’s Team Coco brand and he has almost 20 popular shows and his own channel on Samsung TV. Conan also has major sponsors advertising during his shows. We are in the “UHF” or “public access” era of TH-cam and podcasting. Once the “owners of this country” as George Carlin called them shift begin shifting their content to new platforms everything will change.
Mad Dog is the only best sports guy I listen to on the radio, other than that I get my sports fix and news from TH-cam, Instagram and Google and your definitely one of the best Brodie, keep doing the awesome work!
I grew up on Mike and the Mad Dog. They are very knowledgeable and has some takes, but always backed it up. New media is all about hot takes and it makes money because it is supposed to make you mad to come back. Personalities now don’t need to know anything. They just need a look or a shtick.
As a tangent, FWIW, my brother "makes magic" at ESPN. He works in the streaming department there, and the streaming wars are in full-swing. Once live sports 'decouples' from cable, so many other unrelated cable channels will go bankrupt. It's why TNT lost the NBA and likely loses the NHL when that contract is up and NBC bids for it again. It's why Amazon is buying up all the RSNs and their broadcast rights from Bally while also way overpaying for TNF. Don't be surprised when the NFL puts even more games only on ESPN+, Peacock, and Paramount; like Amazon and TNF. Fox might be the odd one out there.
I think people, including myself, have turned to new sports media because it has skyrocketed in popularity, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, I think that old sports media has become unwatchable, untrustworthy, and all about clicks, views, and likes.
I think you have an old view of new media. For instance, new media absolutely has ad breaks - how many videos/podcasts are there now that are constantly interrupted by live-read ads, platform ads, etc? Also, you can hardly post ‘whatever’ in response to new media - most comment sections are heavily censored.
Another example is sports radio now it mostly national I missed the day of listening to Hacksaw on XTRA 690 talking about local team but now sports station is mostly national. Now sports talking is slowling phasing out for sports betting case in point KGO 810 The Spread
When I think "old media", I think of a group of guys where the one that yells the loudest or has the hottest take wins the argument. I can easily avoid that with "new media".
The closest to a break you'll get in new media is something like Tom Grossi's whole P4TD thing (of course, the livestream still continues through, but he has a clip he plays when he does have to P4TD). Also, we don't have to imagine what New Heights will be like after the Super Bowl. Super Bowl LVII was the Kelce Bowl, after all.
The true sports fan uses a mixture of all three: fan created media allows for passionate analysis and open biases in favour of the team (its influence on traditional media has been that sports reporters now openly can state the teams they cheer for/support which was unheard of) but may lack analystical skills as they have never worked in or around the game professionally or played on the field; ex-athletes provide that behind the scenes insight but sometimes lack the objectivity or macro historical analysis/knowledge; and traditional media have access to the sources and have been aroudn the game but may not have the passion of the fans or experience of playing the game that the ex-athletes have.
And Disney is going to be broken up and lose ESPN and all its other acquisitions, putting it back in its place as nothing but an animation studio with a few theme parks that makes every decision by asking "What would Walt do?" again as it did for decades after his passing.
I laugh at Old Media still wearing sportcoat and tie…this is sports, not a work dinner. Your current look is more appropriate than the buttoned up look ever was.
I feel the way we watch sports is changing and I believe the Professional Womens Hockey League is leading the way as they are the only league I can think of that streams every teams entire regular season games and the playoffs for free
There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I believe both can be blended and have their place. I love the work ethic of traditional local paper team beat writers and pick their brain every chance I get. Yet also some of their takes can feel as outdated as their old platform is. A few friends and I started a group with multiple channels and niches and teams, blending old school and new school. YT channels and a website for writing. Old media (which I trained in via college radio) wouldn’t hire me for a job no matter how knowledgeable I was because I stuttered and I couldn’t move to Podunk, Arkansas to work at a religious radio station for $8 an hour. New media means we can make everything described above and more. There’s more freedom of expression and more opportunities in new media which is a double edged sword. I believe this platform has space for everyone
Old Media is very ivory tower and untouchable. New Media is for the people and relatable. Old Media will tell me what happens in a cold "these are the facts". New Media feels more so made FOR ME and gives me insight into how someone FEELS about what happened and shows their passion. New Media can adapt to and build their audience based on feedback vs being entrenched "you have to buy from us so we don't have to change."
I will accept Brodi in the new media landscape. However, through advertising dollars, new media will gradually resemble old media, except that people can be easily canceled. This phenomenon is known as the cancellation culture. The primary reason for this transformation is the influence of advertising dollars.
TH-cam is a double edge sword. You can find gems on here but more often than not, there’s a ton of garbage. I’m old school, I gotta have a nice background, I’m a musician, my studio matters. I can’t stand bedroom bed in the shot with bag of chips on the nightstand….NAH
Interesting topic and attempt to bridge the two. I’m on that bridge as a viewer. Then there’s A.I. *sigh. New media (as defined) might be the CFL light bulb on its way to LED. How many gen z does it take to screw in a light bulb?
I gave up on old media about 2 years ago. I like having more control over my topics, where old media has their own set formats, and you have to watch stuff you don't care about, many times. Both contain folks who love to hear themselves talk, but I find it less in new media. I like the community involvement in chats and comments. I think new media is better for those with less time to dedicate to coverage when you also watch the actual games. And can we call it "numedia" like "numetal"?
Yeah audience segmentation definitely affected traditional media because in the past I as a Mets fan had to sit in ESPN to wait for them to talk about the Mets for 10 minutes. Well, there is now that time coding in TH-cam, networks such as SNY have TH-cam channel with exclusive content such as the Mets podcast, there are big personalities like giraffleneckmark etc. I don’t think we are going back to traditional media being the big thing. We are the last generation that know of commercial breaks we can’t control, run to the kitchen for snacks etc. These 27yo and below grew up knowing how long the show is and likely looked at the time of this video three times. They don’t know how to watch without a timer.
Can't stand Wusso. Ignorant, effeminate, and obnoxious. He's just mimicking Howard Stern, they all do. Insufferable. I stopped watching MLB Network when he got hired. Thank god for "Foul Territory" on U tube.
I have a personal hatred towards Mad Dog Russo mainly due to his garbage opinion as a human being. He’s so annoying with his LOUD voice and wrong opinion on everything.

Old media is predictable and most shows turn into a hot take debate. ESPN feels like Fox News/CNN with a sports skin.

I followed Chris Russo from his early days on the Imus Show, even before WFAN radio.

Amazon will be broken up under anti monoply law and streaming is going to be banned as a medium.
yes Brodie 100% you absolutely nailed it with the topic of this video!!! super interesting!!! thank you !!!

I listen to Mad Dog regularly on SiriusXM. I realize he’s not for everyone but to me he has a genuine quality that you can’t fake.
I will accept "New Media" but I will watch "PTI" until the day it's cancelled.
Colin for me
What if you die before PTI is canceled?
This was a helpful education for us old guys. Thanks Brodie!
new media is the next big thing!! and you are setting the standard!!☺

Podcast P(aul George) really put a black eye on “new media”
This change from old to new media is one reason why Disney, with ESPN, is losing eyeballs.
And Disney is going to be broken up and lose ESPN and all its other acquisitions, putting it back in its place as nothing but an animation studio with a few theme parks that makes every decision by asking "What would Walt do?" again as it did for decades after his passing.
