That is likely a South Island trapdoor spider, one of NZ's rarer native spider species. I saw a huge one in the Paparoa Range and assumed it had gotten up there in a hunter's bunch of bananas, off a banana boat! Years later I saw it in a text book of NZ insects, described as NZ's biggest native spider. OMG!
