  • Just a quick unscripted video about the new Eureka Seven movie Hi-Evolution 1 which is in theaters in Japan right now and how despite the marketing it really isn't a conventional compilation film in the vein of the Gundam or Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex recap movies. Also I don't know why I keep saying Home Video on here I couldn't think of the right term at the time.

    I saw this movie in theaters and the first 30 minutes was mind blowing! The rest was good because I haven’t seen Eureka Seven since adult swim so this was a great refresh. That being said, I doubt I would’ve enjoyed it as much if I hadn’t seen Eureka Seven before. They could’ve done a better job making the movie flow better. As a character piece though, this was great! Can’t wait to see what they do with Anemone! 👍

    Love the review. It gave me some insight on the film(s) that i was curious about. Such as the summer of love sequence, and how long it was going to be. I've been a huge fan since 2012, right before Ao aired. I had seen ep. 1 on toonami when it was resurrected that same year. After seeing that, i searched online and seen: the first season, the film, read the manga, and finally watched Ao. To be honest, i thought Ao wasn't all that consistent so i was pretty upset when it came out to be canon. only due to the fact that it seems to follow Pocket full of Rainbows more then the original series. also the fact that the series could't stay consistent in its own time/universe.

    4:45 - E7 did kind've hide a timeline in some background details, namely in the Ray=Out magazines and in a few documents that appeared throughout the series. But you'd have to be a really sad person with no life to notice that stuff. *cries in corner*

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that is a good point actually! I more meant they never use on screen text that says "MONDAY, 3PM NEO QUEBEC" like most media uses. It's a cool detail that the original show trusted its audience enough to let them keep track of the timeline themselves!

    • @AlexanderHarris
      @AlexanderHarris 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OHMACS - It's cool, I understood.
      There was one instance where I think they hoped no one was paying attention to the timeline... Episode 43 starts with Dominic and Anemone in chronologically the correct place, but then they leap back in time approximately 3 weeks (to somewhere before Episode 38) for the New Years Ball. In between cuts of the ball, everything involving Gekko State takes place in the future.
      It doesn't create any plot holes so it's not a problem, but it does make me wonder about which episode the ball was originally supposed to take place in. The beginning of Episode 43 mirrors the ending of Episode 44 so it looks like there was some shuffling around there as well.

    I wouldn’t worry about the text they moved by so fast almost at lightspeed that I hardly had time to read them anyway so it may not of been as much of the spoiler as you may have thought

    I am so nervous about seeing this. Psalm of Planets was and remains one of my favorite series ever. It is so many things. A convincing and earned love story between Renton and Eureka. A compelling coming-of-age for Renton. A redemption tale for Holland. An existential crisis for Anemone. It had a heart-breaking score. It had a denouement that effectively reduced me to my component parts.
    Pocketful of Rainbows was serviceable but not all that exciting to me. I didn't like the way that it treated the ancillary cast or the way in which it reused old footage. It felt like it cut a lot of corners. It did have some good things going on, like Naoki Sato's fantastic score as well as some excellent new footage.
    AO was hot garbage. Psalm of Planets could get a little confusing, but it was at least decipherable. AO was completely inscrutable to me and seemed to rewrite the rules by which the world ran. The only good thing I can say about it is that it wrote itself out of its own continuity, so I can basically pretend that it doesn't exist, because, in terms of the canon, it really doesn't.
    Most of what I've seen for Hi-Evo has me excited. Much of the original team is back. Naoki Sato is doing the score. The new footage manages to keep the same look and feel of original while looking simultaneously modern and cinematic (although, the CG elements are a bit out-of-place, such as the weird plant-looking structure that comes up out of the ground).
    I really hope BONES got this right. It means a lot to me.

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I totally understand. I can't speak to 2 or 3 seeing as so little of them are known properties at this point but what I'll give 1 is that it doesn't really serve to recontextualize anything in a negative way or really dilute the original. The narration over the recap stuff doesn't contradict what happened in the original and the Summer of Love stuff handles the old cast as young people really well Dewey and Holland and Talho and Eureka all seem like different people because you're seeing them before the most important event in their lives (until the events of the original show) is going down right in front of you.
      The nice thing about a movie like this is that even if you're a continuity hound or someone who doesn't like to ignore additional materials this doesn't really hurt the original show in any way even though it doesn't work as a standalone story either.
      Also I just love Charles and Ray and it's nice to see them show up in a piece of expanded media given how important they are to thematic development of Renton as a character.

    • @OhHeyK3vin
      @OhHeyK3vin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will fully admit to being happy that Charles and Ray are more of a focus here. They were interesting characters that I don't feel really got enough backstory in the original, Ray especially RE: her feelings towards Eureka beyond the Cliff's notes that we got in Helter Skelter/Memento Mori. That is something I'm curious to see how it is explored.
      Talho as well. She's a character who undergoes a really entertaining arc throughout Psalm of Planets, but so much of how she behaves early on is based on events that we only get a small glimpse of. Who she was before all that is largely a mystery to me. Her past before Blue Monday is something that I'd like to see. I mean, Holland is a great character with a fantastic arc, but we've pretty much seen all we'll ever need to see; there's closure there. Give me more Talho Yuki.
      That said, I've gone more than a decade without ever hearing Adroc's voice. They had plenty of opportunity, particularity in Acperience 4, to give him dialogue in the original, but decided not to. It was a conscious decision. It made him more ephemeral and reinforced the concept of Adroc as an idea and not so much a person.

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like having him be voiced Toru Furuya, the legendary voice actor who played Amuro Ray in the original Gundam back in 1979 was an excellent choice he really lends the roll a lot of gravitas and like acperience 4 makes Adroc feel like a real person moreso than just an ideal as he's help up by people throughout the series...which really makes sense given that one of the themes early on in Psalm of the Planets is the whole never meet your heroes thing hahaha!

    • @OhHeyK3vin
      @OhHeyK3vin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok, that's interesting.
      I'm sure I'll be yelled at for heresy, but I'm actually a fan of the dub. It's pretty much an all-star team of all the good English anime voice actors. I'm curious who they'll cast when it finally gets dubbed in, what, 3 years?

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey I'm a big dub fan myself, if they went with the same voice actor/equivalents it'd be Brad Swaile as Adroc which I somehow doubt hahaha. They actually re-dubbed the Japanese version so it's possible it'll be a whole new dub which would be a shame for me I'd miss a lot of the old English cast especially Crispin Freeman as Holland.

    I'd like to make a correction, kind of, of your assessment of what this movie is. Yes it's clearly a character study of Renton, his relation to father figures, his coming of age story as it were into becoming a father himself on multiple fronts. However, this isn't JUST a character study. Renton admits early on there are a multitude of side characters onboard of the gekko that he admits will take too long to introduce and explain their role on the gekko. However, he omits the existence of one major character that plays a massive role in his up bringing. From start to end they bring up Adroc Thurston, however, they never once, not even hint, at the existence of his grandpa. And from the moment they bring Charles into the picture as his adopted father and Ray as his adopted mother, they make strong implications that Renton had no family back at bellforest. Renton himself admits he was an orphan after Adroc died. He recalls the events that intruduced Eureka into his life, even says that the Nirvash fell into his backyard. But no mention of it being his grandpas workshop. Earlier in the film he's able to recognize multiple things about Charles LFO that stood out to him as interesting and could even help tweak it to fly smoother and stuff. How the hell did he get those skills without his grandpa? There are plenty of plot points that are omitted that are never explained, but instead are replaced with the story line of Charles and Ray adopting him and strongly implying they spent several years together under the same roof. In fact if you pay attention to the timeline they basically say that their mission to help bring the dying girl to the holy lands happened long before he ever stepped foot on the Gekko. There's the scene where Renton is in the park dancing after being woken up by loud music, it's the first time that Renton and Charles meet in the show, and Charles even shakes his hand as if meeting him for the first time, but, then seconds later says that Ray and him were searching for him for a while after he ran away, even saying that Ray was worried about him. (i could be misunderstanding that detail because they jump around the timeline a crap ton) There is actually so much changed from the original anime about Rentons history. So I'd argue that this isn't JUST a character study of Renton during the story of the original anime. I'd argue that this is a character study and a retelling of Rentons journey and a partial reimagining on top of that.

      That's a really solid analysis and takeaway from the movie. I didn't know this video was still viewable anywhere (I can't actually watch it in my home country unfortunately) what was your impression of the following Eureka Seven films? I've been meaning to rewatch them in particular High Evolution which--if it wasn't clear from my video which it absolutely may not be--I very much adored.

    Is Hi-evolution 1 out on dvd or can I watch it online anywhere?? Just heard about this 3 part theatrical release about an hour ago and I'm one movie behind. I'm so excited to watch it theatrically but i'm from FL and this 2nd movie is released everywhere else but here.

    Saw the movie last night in theaters and from that second trailer you described, it felt like they are changing some major parts of the movie. I went in suspecting this movie was going for the Rebuild of Evangelion treatment and it wasn't until we got the trailer that I felt confident in my assumption. Specifically, the Anemone being like, a celebrity of some sort lol? If I recall she was confined to a room and kept secret in the original. But in the trailer, she isn't? It was interesting to say the least lol.
    I liked the movie. I was a bit let down in that it was like 80% revisiting older content with some new stuff sprinkled in. But if this movie was all setup for something different in 2 & 3 then I'm okay with that.

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That trailer for the second movie definitely felt very rebuild of Evangelion, I would be very interested in seeing exactly how much of the film is new footage and how much isn't because I didn't have any ability to time the first sequence in particular and I've heard a lot of really wild estimations on how long that section is.

      What I interested to know are the family members of Renton nonexistent (sister and grandparent)??

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Diane and the grandfather are written out. In the new story, Renton was adopted by Charles and Ray after the summer of love. Most of the film is a recap of episodes 22-24 (Charles and Ray episodes). They rewrote the story to make the idea that they were his adopted parents work (even though it doesn't).

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The celebrity treatment of Anemone seems to be a re-imagining of the episode later in the series where Dewey introduces her and her team at the stadium. Based on the preview, I'm guessing that they are re-doing the fight between Charles and Holland. There was also footage from the soccer game episode.
      The puzzling bit is the bit in the preview where two people are looking at a crashed Gekko nose-down in the ground. My guess is that they are going to do a "flash forward" to the end of the story in the second film or else its a dream.

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funimation is apparently going to release it in theaters in North America in the vein of their Dragonball, Shin Godzilla and Your Name releases. Those were released at varying times after the Japanese releases some much sooner than others. I do know a subtitled version exists as it was aired at a Con in the US in August. I guess right now your best bet would be keeping an eye out for that (I'm also from Canada and we got a decent number of those in my home town.) I also don't know when the blu-ray release is which would at least mean files were out there for fansubs; typically anime films like this see a DVD/bluray release around 2 months after the film's release (that was the case with the Gundam ones and Yamato 2199 ones at least.) Lastly if you wanted to support the release and have cash to spare it's likely the Japanese release will have English subs (again in the vein of the Gundam releases which are also done by Bandai.)
      Thanks for watching by the way and feel free to share this if you've got friends who are curious about Hi-Evolution!

      OHMACS thank you for such a detailed response. I don't know over here in Montreal I can't find anything which is a shame.
      I'd love to support the franchise, if the film is great (but based on your vid it seems to be) so I will be more than happy to.
      For now however I'll need to find a way to watch it anywhere lol.

    • @kaygeo
      @kaygeo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! I think if it does screen in Canada Montreal's a fair bet the problem is they never advertise these things so unless you constantly look for info on local screenings (I found out about our Your Name screening from a tiny little poster in one of our theaters in Calgary) It's always possible that it'll be up sooner than that in some capacity as I know a couple anime movies screening here now are already on Japanese Amazon Prime Video (including Gundam Origin 5 which came out like 2 weeks ago) so it's possible it'll be available subbed sooner than later.

    The first summer of love was depicted in the original series in Episode 38. The representation of the "summer of love" in the film is a total rewrite of the history presented in the original series. I found it rather boring in that it amounted to a bunch of fan service mecha violence.
    What I wish they had done with those 20 minutes is deal with the things never shown in the original series. In particular the complicated intersecting backstory of Holland, Charles, Rey, Talho, Diane and Dewey immediately after the summer of love up to the point where Holland steals the Gekko and Dewey is sent to prison.
    The rest of the film amounted to "best of" character/animation clips of the original series (ep 1-24) put together randomly. They hit every major scene with one exception (the seven swell effect in the second episode). It was fun going through those scenes again and I kind of just ignored the dialogue/story changes because the animation played out the same.
    The two things I find it difficult to forgive them are:
    1) Not covering episode 26. Episode 26 contains some of the very best animation in the entire series and would have been a natural close to the film.
    2) Not including the Seven Swell animation from Episode 2. They tried to do something similar placed later in the series but they didn't capture the colors and light effects that made the original scene so great.
